Containers are often sufficient for low-risk AI-agent jobs, but they are not automatically a complete security boundary. A native container uses the host operating system’s kernel, namespaces and security controls; an application-kernel runtime such as gVisor or a VM-backed design adds another layer between agent code and that kernel. The right choice depends on the code the agent can execute, privileges, mounted files, credentials, network access, compatibility requirements and measured workload performance. Treat the runtime as one layer in a containment system, then restrict everything around it and test the exact configuration you will operate.

What is the difference between OS-level sandboxing and a container?

OS-level sandboxing is a broad term for using operating-system facilities to restrict a process. A container is one way to package and isolate that process, normally with Linux namespaces, cgroups and security mechanisms such as seccomp, AppArmor or Landlock. The important distinction is the trust boundary: a conventional container shares the host kernel, while a virtual machine (VM), microVM or application-kernel runtime inserts another enforcement layer.

These labels describe overlapping layers rather than mutually exclusive products. An agent might run in a container, have its system calls filtered with seccomp, use a read-only filesystem, and still be placed inside a lightweight VM. Conversely, a process sandbox may be applied without container packaging. Security depends on the complete design, not on the word printed on the runtime.

Native containers share the host kernel

Namespaces separate process IDs, mounts, users, networking and other views of the system. Cgroups limit and account for resources. Seccomp can deny selected system calls, while AppArmor or Landlock can constrain file and capability access. This process-like model is efficient and familiar to deployment teams, but the host kernel remains part of the trusted computing base. A kernel vulnerability, an over-privileged container or an exposed host interface can therefore affect the strength of the boundary.

Process sandboxes constrain selected operations

An OS-level process sandbox can deny filesystem paths, network destinations or system calls without changing the packaging model. Its effective protection depends on available kernel features, privileges and the quality of the profile. NVIDIA’s AI Workbench guidance notes that agent-side process controls may lack the required privileges or kernel support inside a container and can contain gaps; it treats those controls as additive to a container boundary, not a replacement for one.

Application kernels and guest kernels add separation

gVisor supplies an application kernel in userspace that implements many system interfaces for a sandboxed container. It is neither merely a syscall filter nor a conventional hypervisor VM. Its goal is to reduce direct application exposure to the host kernel while retaining much of the container workflow.

A VM runs a separate guest kernel behind a hypervisor. A microVM is a smaller, faster-to-provision VM designed for focused workloads. Docker’s local AI Sandbox documentation describes one microVM per agent sandbox and says, for that architecture, “The primary trust boundary is the microVM.” That statement applies to Docker’s documented local design, not to every VM or microVM deployment.

Are containers secure enough for AI agents?

They can be, when the agent’s threat model is limited and the surrounding controls are tight. They are not automatically secure enough for an agent that executes untrusted code, receives hostile prompts, handles valuable credentials or can reach sensitive host services. A container should be treated as a useful boundary whose strength includes the host kernel and every resource you expose to it.

Define what the agent is allowed to affect

Start with an explicit inventory:

  • Code and privileges: Can the agent run arbitrary binaries, use sudo, load kernel modules, create nested containers or access device files?
  • Filesystem: Which directories are mounted, and are they read-only, read-write or copied into a private workspace?
  • Credentials: Which API keys, cloud roles, SSH agents, package credentials and environment variables are injected?
  • Network: Which destinations, ports, DNS resolvers and metadata services are reachable? Is egress denied by default?
  • Host integrations: Are Docker sockets, host paths, desktop services, browser bridges or local tool servers available?
  • Persistence: What survives termination, and who can retrieve logs, artifacts or caches?

Docker’s security documentation emphasizes that shared workspaces and permitted network channels remain ways an agent can affect the host or user. A container label does not neutralize a writable mount, a broadly scoped cloud token or an unrestricted host socket.

Use defense in depth instead of a single control

Combine a least-privilege container with a syscall profile, mandatory access controls, dropped capabilities, resource limits, a restricted filesystem and explicit network policy. Monitor process creation, file access, outbound connections and attempts to reach host interfaces. Keep secrets outside the workspace where possible and issue short-lived credentials with narrow scopes.

OpenAI’s description of its frontier-model training environment, published October 23, 2026, illustrates this layered approach: restricted containers run inside lightweight VMs, with monitoring and network or cloud perimeters around them. OpenAI states, “We define a strict security boundary around the resources the agent is authorized to use and design the surrounding infrastructure to enforce that boundary—even when agents make sustained, sophisticated attempts to breach it.” This is an example architecture, not proof that one universal stack is required.

When should an AI agent use gVisor or a VM-backed sandbox?

Choose an application-kernel or guest-kernel boundary when reducing direct host-kernel exposure is worth the compatibility and operational cost. This is especially relevant for arbitrary code execution, multi-tenant services, untrusted repositories, high-impact credentials or agents expected to make sustained attempts to bypass restrictions.

Use gVisor when container compatibility matters

gVisor is designed to preserve container tooling while interposing an application kernel. It can be a practical middle layer for workloads that need stronger isolation than a native container but do not require a full guest operating system. Validate the system calls, filesystem behavior, networking, device access and language runtimes your agent uses; an application-kernel boundary can expose compatibility differences that a native container would not.

Use a VM or microVM when the kernel boundary is decisive

A separate guest kernel creates a different trust boundary from a host-kernel container. It is attractive for hostile or highly variable code, tenant separation and agent environments that need broad package installation. The tradeoffs include guest-image management, memory overhead, startup behavior, device and networking configuration, and the need to operate another kernel lifecycle.

Remember that VM isolation does not solve exposure mistakes

A VM can still be undermined by a writable host share, a credential mounted into the guest, an overly broad network route or a local integration that runs outside the VM. In Docker’s local sandbox documentation, direct workspace mounts are read-write, clone mode uses a private clone with a read-only repository mount, network policy is managed separately, and local stdio MCP servers operate outside the VM. The exact deployment mode therefore matters more than a generic claim that “it uses a microVM.”

How do the main runtime choices compare?

No single option wins every category. Compare the boundary, capabilities, host exposure, compatibility, measured performance and operational burden for the workload you actually run.

Approach Primary boundary Typical strengths Important limitations to verify
Native container with OS controls Namespaces and security controls around a shared host kernel Low friction, broad ecosystem, process-like behavior and fine-grained policy options Host kernel remains trusted; mistakes in capabilities, mounts, sockets or profiles can widen exposure
Process sandbox layered on a container Selected filesystem, network or syscall restrictions enforced by the host OS Useful defense in depth and precise restrictions for known operations May lack privileges or kernel features inside containers; profiles can be incomplete or bypassed by exposed interfaces
gVisor-isolated container Userspace application kernel between the workload and host kernel Stronger host-kernel separation while retaining much container tooling Syscall, filesystem, networking and device compatibility must be tested; overhead varies by workload
Kata or other VM-backed container Guest kernel behind a hypervisor, presented through a container workflow Distinct kernel boundary with familiar orchestration interfaces Guest-image, device, startup, memory and lifecycle operations add complexity
MicroVM-based agent sandbox Lightweight VM per sandbox or agent Clear guest-kernel boundary and strong tenant separation for arbitrary code Resource footprint, image management, integration behavior and network policy require explicit design

Kubernetes Agent Sandbox documents a runtime-agnostic management layer that can use standard containers, gVisor or Kata Containers. It also documents lifecycle features such as warm pools. Those features improve orchestration and startup operations; they are not a cross-runtime benchmark or a guarantee of identical cold-start behavior.

What is the performance overhead of gVisor?

There is no defensible universal percentage or fixed ranking for gVisor, native containers and microVMs on AI-agent workloads. gVisor’s production guidance says overhead depends on workload behavior: I/O-heavy and network-heavy applications are more likely to slow down, while CPU-bound workloads may see minimal or no overhead. The same runtime can therefore look inexpensive for one agent and costly for another.

Why agent workloads are difficult to generalize

Agents often mix model calls, shell commands, package installation, filesystem scans, compilation, browser or tool traffic and long-lived background processes. A workload dominated by local CPU computation may stress a different path from one that performs thousands of small filesystem operations or makes frequent network calls. Image size, cache state, DNS, storage backend, CPU quotas and security policy also change the result.

Measure the configuration you will operate

Run representative tasks under the same host hardware, kernel, runtime version, resource limits, filesystem pattern and network policy. Test both cold and warm starts, and record:

  • End-to-end task latency and throughput
  • Sandbox startup and teardown time
  • CPU, memory and storage consumption
  • Network latency, connection failures and retry behavior
  • Compatibility failures, denied syscalls and package-install errors
  • Policy-management work, alert volume and recovery time

Repeat tests with realistic repositories, tools, concurrency and failure cases. A warm pool can reduce allocation latency, but it does not establish that every runtime has the same startup characteristics or resource cost.

How should I choose a sandbox for an AI agent?

Choose from the threat model outward: identify the worst credible action, then select the least complex architecture that keeps that action inside an acceptable boundary.

  1. Classify the workload. Separate trusted internal code, semi-trusted repositories and arbitrary or adversarial code. Note whether the agent can install software, compile native code, access devices or create nested containers.
  2. Map data and authority. List files, tokens, cloud roles, host services and network destinations. Remove anything the task does not need.
  3. Set the boundary. Use a native container with strong OS controls for lower-risk, well-understood jobs; evaluate gVisor when host-kernel exposure is a concern but container compatibility is valuable; evaluate a VM or microVM for stronger guest-kernel separation and broad untrusted execution.
  4. Design mounts deliberately. Prefer a private copy or read-only repository mount. If a writable mount is necessary, isolate it from credentials, host configuration and other tenants.
  5. Apply network policy. Deny egress by default where practical, then allow only required services. Block cloud metadata endpoints and administrative interfaces unless a documented task requires them.
  6. Constrain privileges and resources. Drop Linux capabilities, run as a non-root user where compatible, apply seccomp and mandatory-access profiles, and set CPU, memory, process, file-descriptor and storage limits.
  7. Test compatibility and abuse cases. Exercise package installation, compilers, shells, browsers, tool calls, large files, denied syscalls, malformed inputs and attempts to reach host sockets or credentials.
  8. Operate and review. Log policy decisions and relevant process or network events, rotate images and profiles, patch the host or guest kernels, and re-test after runtime or kernel upgrades.

What are the common failure modes?

Most incidents arise from the environment around an agent rather than from an abstract runtime comparison. Check these failure modes during design reviews.

Writable host data is treated as harmless

A read-write workspace lets an agent alter source, configuration, build scripts or generated files. Use a private clone or a dedicated disposable volume when changes must not reach the original tree, and verify which path is mounted read-only versus read-write.

Credentials cross the boundary unnecessarily

Environment variables, mounted credential files and forwarded SSH or cloud agents can turn a contained process into an account with host-wide authority. Prefer short-lived, task-scoped tokens, brokered operations and explicit audience restrictions.

A host socket creates an escape route

Docker or container-management sockets can provide administrative control over the host. Do not mount them merely to make a tool convenient; provide a narrow service API or a separate build environment instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network access is assumed to be safe

An agent can exfiltrate data, reach internal control planes or attack another service through allowed egress. Document DNS, proxy, IP and port behavior, and test that denied destinations really fail from inside the sandbox.

Agent-side policy is mistaken for enforcement

Prompt instructions, tool wrappers and in-process checks are useful for reducing accidental actions, but an agent that can execute arbitrary code may bypass them. Enforce the important restrictions below the agent process and treat application controls as supplementary.

Compatibility exceptions silently weaken isolation

Teams sometimes enable extra capabilities, host devices or permissive profiles to fix a failing tool. Record every exception, assess its effect on the threat model and remove it when the workload no longer needs it.

How do operations differ between runtime types?

Native containers usually have the simplest image and scheduling workflow, but operators must maintain host-kernel patches and policy profiles. gVisor adds a runtime layer and compatibility testing. VM-backed approaches add guest images, guest-kernel patching, boot and shutdown behavior, and more explicit resource planning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lifecycle design matters for agents that create files, install packages or keep state. Decide whether each run is disposable, resumable or persistent; define where artifacts are exported; and make cleanup idempotent. Kubernetes Agent Sandbox’s warm-pool concept can keep pre-warmed capacity available, reducing allocation latency at the cost of managing idle resources and reset correctness.

Monitoring should cover both the agent and the boundary: denied system calls, unexpected child processes, privilege changes, mount changes, outbound destinations, resource exhaustion and attempts to access metadata or host sockets. Alerts are useful only if an operator can revoke credentials, terminate the sandbox and preserve evidence quickly.

What does a practical layered architecture look like?

For a code-executing agent, a defensible design can combine a disposable workspace, a least-privilege container, a syscall and mandatory-access profile, deny-by-default egress, short-lived credentials, resource limits and centralized monitoring. If the threat model includes determined escape attempts or multiple mutually untrusted tenants, place that container inside gVisor or a VM/microVM and keep host integrations outside the guest unless they are mediated.

Expose tools through narrow APIs rather than raw host sockets. Return only the files or results the task needs. Separate the control plane that schedules and terminates sandboxes from the data plane in which agent code runs. Make reset and revocation reliable enough that a failed run cannot retain files, processes, tokens or network state.

Which option is right for common scenarios?

Scenario Reasonable starting point Escalate isolation when
Trusted internal automation with fixed commands Native container plus least privilege, read-only inputs and restricted egress The code or dependencies become untrusted, or credentials and data sensitivity increase
Untrusted pull requests or generated build scripts Disposable container with strict mounts, network policy and monitoring Build steps are arbitrary, multi-tenant or able to access sensitive services; evaluate gVisor or a VM-backed runtime
Interactive coding agent installing packages Isolated workspace with explicit package and network allowances The agent can run hostile binaries, access valuable tokens or share a host with other tenants; evaluate a microVM
Highly sensitive data or hostile multi-tenancy VM or microVM boundary with mediated tools and minimal mounts Any required host integration cannot be narrowly mediated; redesign the integration rather than assuming the VM solves it

What should I document before deployment?

  • The agent’s permitted commands, users, capabilities and devices
  • Every filesystem mount, mode, owner and persistence rule
  • Credential names, scopes, lifetime, injection path and revocation procedure
  • Allowed network destinations, DNS behavior, proxies and blocked metadata services
  • Runtime, host and guest-kernel versions, security profiles and exceptions
  • Cold-start and warm-start assumptions, resource limits and concurrency
  • Compatibility test results and known unsupported system calls or tools
  • Monitoring signals, alert owners, termination authority and evidence retention
  • Patch, image-refresh, profile-review and disaster-recovery schedules

Review this document whenever the agent gains a tool, a mount, a credential or a new class of code. Those changes can alter the security boundary even if the container image is unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent escape a Docker container?

A container reduces access but does not make escape impossible. The host kernel, Linux capabilities, mounted sockets, devices, credentials and kernel vulnerabilities all influence risk, so hardening and monitoring are required in addition to image isolation.

Does gVisor replace seccomp and AppArmor?

No. gVisor changes how many system interfaces reach the host kernel, while seccomp and mandatory-access controls can still restrict the workload and its runtime. Use the combination that your compatibility tests and threat model support.

Are microVMs always faster than gVisor?

The available documentation does not establish a universal ranking. Startup, I/O, networking, memory use and workload behavior can make either option preferable, so benchmark both with the same limits and policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I mount my repository read-write for an agent?

Only when the task genuinely needs in-place edits and the consequences are acceptable. A private clone or disposable volume limits damage; Docker’s local sandbox documentation distinguishes read-write workspace mounts from clone mode with a read-only repository mount.

How often should sandbox policies be retested?

Retest after changes to the host or guest kernel, runtime version, security profile, agent tools, mounts, credentials or network routes. Also schedule adversarial tests so a policy does not remain trusted solely because ordinary tasks still work.
