You can use an unmodified original wired SNES or Super Famicom controller on a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer with a matching SNES-to-USB adapter. Connect the controller to the adapter, connect the adapter to the computer, verify the button signals in an operating-system input test, and then map the buttons in your game or emulator.
That same PC adapter is not a general console converter. Raphnet lists its documented USB adapter as unsupported on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 3, 4, and 5; no complete, current original-controller-to-USB-to-bridge setup was verified here for Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series, or other modern consoles. For console play, use a separately supported wireless controller or a modification kit rather than assuming any USB plug will work.

How do I tell whether I have an original SNES controller?
Start with the controller, not the adapter listing. The documented original models are Nintendo’s North American SNS-005, Japanese SHVC-005, and PAL SNSP-005 wired pads. These have the original SNES/Super Famicom controller plug and are the type supported by an adapter expressly designed for an original SNES or SFC controller.
Original wired models
Look for a permanently attached cable ending in the classic SNES controller connector. Regional shell colors and labels differ, but the model family is what matters. Raphnet identifies SNS-005, SHVC-005, and SNSP-005 as compatible with its single-player adapter: Raphnet SNES-to-USB adapter V2.

Products that are not the same controller
The SNES Classic Edition controller and Nintendo’s later wireless Super Nintendo Entertainment System Controller are separate products. Nintendo explicitly says the wireless Switch controller and SNES Classic Edition controller are not interchangeable: Nintendo support documentation. Do not assume an adapter for an original socket accepts either of those cables.
Some conversion kits label their ports separately. 8BitDo describes the port for an original controller as long and flat, while its Classic version is short and narrow. Apply that distinction only to the kit’s own documentation; it is not proof that every third-party adapter has the same socket.

What hardware do I need for an original SNES controller on a PC?
For a computer, the essential purchase is an original-SNES-to-USB adapter with the correct controller socket. Raphnet’s documented V2 adapter presents itself as a standard USB HID joystick and requires no special adapter driver on Windows, Linux, or macOS.
| Choice | Keeps your controller unmodified? | Documented destination | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-port original-SNES-to-USB adapter | Yes | Windows, Linux, macOS PC | One controller; configure games individually. Raphnet lists the cited adapter as unsupported directly on Switch and PS3/PS4/PS5. |
| Dual-port original-SNES-to-USB adapter | Yes | Windows, Linux, macOS PC | Two independent USB HID joysticks; a second pad alone does not create a second computer input. |
| SNES/SFC USB conversion circuit | Depends on the build | Windows, Linux, macOS PC | A DIY adapter or internal modification, not a ready-made universal console bridge. |
| 8BitDo Original Kit | No; it modifies the controller | Switch and the PC platforms listed by the manufacturer | Select Original, not Classic. Wireless operation is documented; the included external cable is for charging, not wired play. |
| Nintendo wireless SNES controller | No; it replaces the old pad | Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Intended for classic-game use; Nintendo says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to purchase it, and other games are not guaranteed. |
The table separates two different goals: preserving a specific vintage controller and obtaining a controller that a modern console officially understands. An adapter is the least invasive PC route; a wireless replacement or modification is a different solution for console use.
How do I connect an original SNES controller to Windows, Linux, or macOS?
Connect the controller through the adapter, confirm that the operating system receives every button, and only then configure the game. This sequence distinguishes a cabling problem from a game-specific mapping problem.

- Choose the correct adapter. Buy an adapter whose socket explicitly accepts an original SNES/SFC controller. A USB cable by itself cannot mate with the original plug, and an adapter made for an SNES Classic or a wireless controller is not automatically compatible.
- Attach the controller. Insert the original controller plug fully into the adapter’s SNES/SFC socket. Avoid forcing a connector that does not align; the socket should be keyed for the plug.
- Connect USB to the computer. Plug the adapter into the computer’s USB port. Raphnet documents its V2 unit as a USB HID joystick, so supported desktop operating systems use their standard input support rather than a special driver package. The manufacturer lists Windows, Linux, and macOS compatibility on the product page: product specifications.
- Test the signals before opening the game. On Windows, press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpl, select the listed controller, choose Properties, and watch the D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, Start, and Select while pressing them. Raphnet documentsjstestandevtestfor Linux; its testing instructions are at Raphnet’s controller-testing page. On macOS, the cited product page confirms support but does not prescribe one universal system test utility, so use the input screen supplied by the game or emulator. - Select the controller in the game or emulator. Open its controller, input, or key-bind menu, choose the detected HID/DirectInput-style device, and assign each control. Map the D-pad to directional movement, the four face buttons to the game’s action buttons, the two shoulder buttons, Start, and Select. Save the profile if the software offers per-game mappings.
- Check the result in a live menu. Confirm that each button produces the intended action and that no direction is held constantly. If the operating-system test succeeds but the game does not respond, the issue is usually the game’s device selection or input API support, not the original controller itself.
Why HID and XInput labels matter
A standard HID joystick can appear to the operating system while a particular game accepts only XInput-style devices. The adapter’s presence in joy.cpl, jstest, or evtest proves that the computer sees button events; it does not guarantee that every XInput-only title will accept them natively. Select the device explicitly, use the game’s own remapping screen, or consult that game’s documented controller requirements rather than assuming all USB controllers are interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I connect two original SNES controllers to one PC?
Yes, but use a documented two-port adapter when you need two players. Raphnet’s dual-player V2 adapter exposes two independent HID joysticks, allowing the operating system and a game to distinguish player one from player two.
A single-port adapter has only one controller input. Plugging a second controller into a passive splitter, or simply owning a second pad, does not create another USB device. In a two-player game, verify that both joysticks appear separately in the operating system and assign one to each player in the game’s input menu.
Does an SNES-to-USB adapter work on Nintendo Switch?
For the cited Raphnet adapter, no. Raphnet’s product FAQ states, “The Switch does not support any of our USB adapters unfortunately.” The same product page lists Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 as unsupported destinations: Raphnet compatibility information.
This is a product-specific compatibility statement, not proof that every USB adapter or every bridge behaves identically. No complete, current chain consisting of an original controller, a SNES-to-USB adapter, a translation bridge, firmware, and Switch or Switch 2 was verified for this guide. The same caution applies to Xbox Series consoles: do not treat a generic USB plug, a charging cable, or an unverified bridge as a supported solution.

Why a normal USB connection is not enough
Modern consoles decide which USB and wireless devices they accept through their own device protocols and authentication rules. A desktop HID listing therefore cannot be generalized to a console. The exact adapter, bridge firmware, console model, and game all matter; without a manufacturer-supported end-to-end statement for that chain, compatibility remains unestablished.
What are the practical alternatives for console play?
If the goal is Switch or Switch 2 play rather than preserving the original wired pad, choose a product documented for that console. If preserving the original shell and buttons matters more, a wireless modification is a separate project with different limitations.
Nintendo’s wireless SNES controller
Nintendo documents a separate wireless Super Nintendo Entertainment System Controller for Switch and Switch 2. It is a replacement controller, not an adapter for the old wired pad. Nintendo positions it for classic games and states that a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to purchase it; compatibility with other Switch games is not guaranteed. Nintendo’s specifications give approximately 20 hours of play per charge, a manufacturer figure rather than an independent test. See Nintendo’s support page for the current platform and purchasing conditions.
8BitDo Original Kit
The 8BitDo Original Kit modifies an original controller for wireless use with Switch and the PC platforms listed by its manufacturer. Choose the Original kit for an original SNES/SFC pad; the Classic kit is for the different SNES Classic controller. The kit’s external cable charges the modified controller and is not a wired-play mode, according to the manufacturer’s FAQ: 8BitDo kit FAQ.
Because the kit changes the controller, check its fit instructions, regional availability, and supported host list before opening a valuable vintage pad. It should be evaluated as a wireless modification, not as a passive cable that converts the old plug to USB.

DIY USB conversion
A SNES/SFC USB conversion circuit can be built into an adapter or installed as an internal modification. The documented destination for this type of project is Windows, Linux, or macOS PC use; it is not evidence of a universal console bridge. A DIY build also makes the quality of the wiring, firmware, enclosure, and connector installation part of the project.
A common wrong-way purchase
An SNES Retro Receiver is designed to accept a wireless controller on an original SNES console. That direction is the reverse of what a PC owner needs: it does not establish a path from an original wired controller into a modern console or computer. Check whether a product’s socket is an input for the controller you own or a receiver for a different wireless signal before buying.
What latency and software details are documented?
Raphnet lists 6 ms default total latency and a 2 ms minimum setting for its named V2 adapter. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results, and they should not be presented as a measured study of every controller, computer, or game. The controller’s switches, the operating system, the emulator, and the display chain can all affect the perceived response even when the adapter specification is unchanged.
Raphnet’s Adapter Manager page lists version 2.1.34 dated March 25, 2026. That date identifies the support-tool listing; it is not evidence of a new SNES-specific firmware release or a performance test. Use the adapter’s own documentation when deciding whether a setting or update applies to your exact hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I troubleshoot a controller that is not detected?
Work from the physical connection outward. The operating-system test is the dividing line: if no button event appears there, fix the controller, socket, USB connection, or adapter selection before changing game settings.

- The device appears but buttons do nothing: Open the operating-system test and press every control. A connector that is not fully seated, a damaged cable, or an incompatible controller model can leave the device listed while producing no useful events.
- Some buttons work and others do not: Record which controls fail in the OS test. If the same controls fail outside the game, the problem is upstream of the game’s key bindings; if all controls work there, rebuild the game’s mapping.
- The game ignores the controller: Select the detected device in the game’s input menu. Check whether the title accepts HID or DirectInput-style devices rather than only XInput, and save a profile after mapping.
- Player two is missing: A one-port adapter cannot provide a second independent input. Use a documented dual-port adapter and verify that two separate joysticks appear before launching the game.
- A Switch or PlayStation console ignores it: Treat that as expected for the cited Raphnet PC adapter, whose documentation lists those consoles as unsupported. Do not infer that a different bridge works without an end-to-end compatibility statement for the exact hardware chain.
How should I choose between preserving the pad and replacing it?
Use an original-SNES-to-USB adapter when the priority is keeping the controller unmodified and playing on a computer. Choose a dual-port model for two-player PC sessions. Choose Nintendo’s wireless controller when official Switch or Switch 2 compatibility matters more than retaining the old controller, and choose the Original Kit only when you accept a hardware modification for wireless play.
- Preserve the original controller: Select a single- or dual-port USB adapter for documented desktop operating systems.
- Play on Switch with no modification: Use Nintendo’s separate wireless SNES controller, subject to its Nintendo Switch Online purchasing requirement and game-compatibility limits.
- Keep the original shell but go wireless: Investigate the Original Kit’s fit and supported hosts; remember that its external cable charges rather than providing wired input.
- Build your own solution: Treat a USB conversion circuit as a DIY PC project, with no automatic implication of Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox support.
How we selected the documented routes
The routes above are separated by four criteria: whether the original controller remains unmodified, whether the destination is explicitly documented, whether one or two independent controller ports are provided, and whether the product’s signal direction matches the task. Manufacturer compatibility pages and Nintendo’s support documentation take precedence over generic claims that any USB adapter works. Platform support and availability can change, so verify the exact model and current documentation before purchase.

Is an SNES Classic Edition controller compatible with an original-SNES-to-USB adapter?
Not automatically. Nintendo identifies the SNES Classic Edition pad as a different product from its wireless Switch SNES controller, and adapter sockets are model-specific. Confirm the connector and the adapter’s stated controller family before connecting it.
Can the 8BitDo Original Kit be used as a wired controller while it charges?
No. The manufacturer’s FAQ describes the kit’s external cable as a charging connection, not a wired-play connection. Its documented use is wireless operation after the original controller has been modified.
Does an SNES Retro Receiver let an original wired pad work on a modern console?
No direction is established for that use. A Retro Receiver is designed to receive a wireless controller for an original SNES, which is the opposite signal path from sending an original wired controller into a modern console.
What does Raphnet Adapter Manager version 2.1.34 mean?
Raphnet lists version 2.1.34 with a March 25, 2026 date on its Adapter Manager page. That entry documents the support tool; it is not, by itself, a claim that a new SNES-specific firmware release or performance improvement exists.
