The 1999 Silent Hill is officially playable today on original PlayStation hardware, PlayStation 2, and certain PlayStation 3 consoles; digital copies may also be available through the PS3 PlayStation Store in regions where it remains open. What is the original Silent Hill?
Silent Hill is the first game in Konami’s survival-horror series. Team Silent developed it for PlayStation, and Konami released it in 1999. The story follows Harry Mason as he searches the fogbound town for his adopted daughter, Cheryl. It is not the same game as Silent Hill 2, its 2024 remake, or any later entry in the series.

Original PlayStation and PlayStation 2
A PlayStation disc is the most straightforward physical way to play the licensed original. The North American disc identifier is SLUS-00707; PAL Platinum and Japanese PSOne Books editions are reprints of the PlayStation game, not ports to different hardware. A PS3 that supports PS1 discs can run the physical game, but this is not the cleanest route for someone sensitive to glitches. DoesItPlay reported completing the ESRB-standard disc to a Good+ ending on PS3. Its account notes a 30 FPS target with frequent dips below it, choppy, truncated, or silent dialogue in some cutscenes, and a missing hunting-rifle sound effect during the final boss. Subtitles remain available.
DoesItPlay did not publish the PS3 chassis model it used, so those results do not establish a model-by-model compatibility list. Sony’s original “fat” PS3 models are the generation known for PS1 disc playback; do not assume that every PS3 variant, or a PS4 or PS5, can read the disc. If you are buying hardware specifically for this game, verify the particular console’s PS1 compatibility rather than relying on “PS3” alone.

PlayStation 3 digital store
The PS3 version released on PSN in 2009 and can still be purchased through the PlayStation Store on PS3 in regions where the listing and store remain available. Polygon reported this purchase route in February 2026. Switchblade Gaming could not load a live PS3 listing on 13 October 2026, so the current price and stock are not confirmed here; check the actual store on your console before making plans around it.
Sony announced a gradual shutdown of the PS3 and Vita stores on 1 July 2026, with full closure across regions scheduled for July 2027. The process had already begun in some Latin American and Middle Eastern markets, including reported closures in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in October 2026. The schedule is regional, so a listing or purchase route available in one country may not be available in another. If you already own a PS3 and can still see the game in your local store, buying and downloading it while the listing remains accessible is the practical course.

PS3 purchases cannot be made directly with a bank card, according to Polygon’s February 2026 account; funds must first be added to the PlayStation wallet. Store availability and account region matter, and the full shutdown date is not a promise that every country will retain the store until then.
PSP and Vita
The PSN version also ran on PSP, but Sony closed the PSP store on 2 July 2021. A PSP is therefore a legal option only if you already purchased the game and can access your copy through the console’s download list; it is not a way to make a new PSP purchase. A Vita can play the game through Remote Play from a PS3 that has it, if you still have both devices. That is different from buying a new Vita-native copy in 2026. Older accounts of a Vita storefront listing do not establish that a new purchase is available now, particularly after Sony’s store changes.
Is Silent Hill 1 on PS5, PlayStation Plus, Xbox, PC, Steam, or GOG?
No official modern-console or PC release of the 1999 game is established. It does not play from a PS1 disc on PS4 or PS5, and the original is not included in the cited PlayStation Plus Premium Classics catalog. The platform gap is part of a broader catalog picture, not proof of a specific decision by Konami: Switchblade Gaming counted 13 numbered Silent Hill games and found five for sale or download on current PS5, Xbox Series, or PC stores in 2026. No official Konami explanation for why the original has not been brought to those stores was identified in the cited coverage.

Is the announced remake a way to play the original?
No. Konami announced in June 2025 that Bloober Team is developing an official remake of the 1999 game. It is the clearest licensed modern-hardware option for players willing to play a new interpretation, but it is not a port of the original build.
As of the October 2026 reporting cited here, Konami had not confirmed the remake’s platforms or release date. PS5 is widely expected by some coverage, but expectation is not confirmation. A 2027 launch window appeared in an MP1st report on 26 October 2026 and was repeated by other outlets; it is a report, not a date announced by Konami. Series producer Motoi Okamoto told Famitsu, in remarks quoted by Polygon in December 2025, that the series aimed for about one title per year, while acknowledging uncertainty about how far that goal could be achieved. That broad cadence does not establish a release window for this remake.
Are fan PC ports or emulators legal ways to play?
Fan-made PC projects are unofficial and are not Konami-licensed releases. The SlickAmogus native PC build released in June 2026 is reported to play from start to finish, with high-resolution and uncapped-frame-rate support, but it still has bugs involving the chainsaw, rock drill, some boss effects, audio loops, and ending cutscenes. Its setup calls for the user to supply game data in a gamedata folder as a .bin file. The project’s GitHub discussion says users need a legitimate copy of the game data.
A separate fan decompilation effort was reported by FRVR in October 2026 as having completed 100% of the US code, with 45 contributors and a stated no-AI-generated-code policy. Emulator software and copyrighted game data are separate things. The existence of an emulator does not grant permission to download a commercial game image, and downloading someone else’s ISO is copyright infringement. The fan projects’ request for a user-supplied dump is not permission to obtain a copy from an unauthorized source.
What is the most practical legal choice?
If you already own a PS1 disc and a PlayStation or PlayStation 2, use that route for the original build. If your only compatible hardware is a PS3, a disc can work but has documented audio and performance caveats; a PS3 digital copy may be preferable if the store in your region still lists it. Previously purchased PSP copies and Vita Remote Play are legacy options for people who already have the required devices and access.
