ORBIT is an open-source, self-hosted gateway that puts applications, private data sources, models and tools behind one OpenAI-compatible API. Its maintainers describe it as the Open Retrieval-Based Inference Toolkit: configurable adapters can connect files, SQL and NoSQL databases, vector stores, HTTP APIs and MCP tools to local or hosted inference providers. You can run the gateway on premises, in a private cloud or another isolated environment, then let client applications use a consistent API while ORBIT handles retrieval, provider selection and tool calls.

That architecture is useful when an application needs answers grounded in internal data or agents that can perform actions, but it is not automatically a private or compliant system. The actual data path depends on the adapters, inference provider, identity services and other dependencies you configure. The project documentation is the authority for current images, settings and authentication behavior; the claims below describe documented capabilities, not an independent performance test or security audit.

What is ORBIT?

ORBIT is software for assembling an AI integration layer rather than a model itself. The project repository says it is an “open-source, self-hosted AI gateway for private retrieval, natural-language data access, and tool-calling agents.” In practical terms, an application sends requests to one API, and ORBIT can retrieve context, call an enabled tool, forward inference to a selected model provider and return a response in an OpenAI-compatible format.

The project’s own repository summarizes the goal this way: “Connect your data and tools to local or hosted models through one API. Deploy on your own infrastructure.” That sentence captures two separate decisions. You choose where the gateway runs, and you separately choose where inference and supporting services run.

What ORBIT is designed to connect

  • Files and other unstructured content for retrieval.
  • Relational databases accessed through SQL.
  • Non-relational databases, including MongoDB examples in the tutorial.
  • Vector stores for semantic retrieval.
  • DuckDB and other analytical sources.
  • HTTP APIs and composite multi-source workflows.
  • Agent tools and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers.
  • Local or hosted inference providers through a common interface.

ORBIT’s maintainers also document operational features such as authentication, quotas, audit logs, provider fallbacks, monitoring and an administration UI. Treat those as project-stated capabilities. Whether they are sufficient for your organization depends on how you configure, monitor and operate the deployment.

How does ORBIT connect private data to a model?

ORBIT uses adapters and provider configuration to turn different systems into a common request path. A typical request flows through the gateway, identifies the permitted data or tool, retrieves or executes what the adapter allows, and sends the resulting context to the configured model.

  1. Client request: an application uses the OpenAI-compatible endpoint rather than a provider-specific SDK.
  2. Identity and policy: ORBIT authenticates the caller and applies the roles, quotas and other controls enabled in your deployment.
  3. Adapter selection: the request reaches a file, database, vector, HTTP, agent or MCP adapter that you have configured.
  4. Retrieval or action: the adapter reads approved records, searches a vector index or invokes a tool. The adapter’s credentials and network access determine what is actually reachable.
  5. Inference: ORBIT sends the prompt and any retrieved context to a selected local or hosted model provider.
  6. Response and records: the client receives the compatible response while configured logging, quotas and monitoring collect operational information.

This design separates application code from provider and data-source details. It also creates a larger control surface: a model request, a database credential, a vector index, an MCP server and an identity provider can all affect confidentiality and reliability.

What does “self-hosted” mean in ORBIT?

Self-hosting means you operate the ORBIT gateway on infrastructure you control, such as an on-premises server, private cloud or isolated network. It does not prove that every model call, identity check, secret lookup or object-storage operation stays on that infrastructure.

If you select a hosted inference provider, prompts and retrieved context may leave the gateway’s network according to that provider’s terms and your configuration. The same qualification applies to separately operated services such as an external OIDC identity provider, a cloud secret manager, cloud object storage or a self-hosted PII analyzer running outside the gateway host. Map the complete data path before calling a deployment private.

Which data sources and tools can you try first?

The tutorial presents a progression from a first chat to files, SQL, vector stores, DuckDB, MongoDB, HTTP APIs, composite multi-source retrieval, agent tools and MCP. Start with one narrow, low-risk adapter. That lets you verify credentials, retrieval quality, authorization and model behavior before combining multiple sources or enabling actions.

Files

File retrieval is a useful first evaluation because you can create a small, non-sensitive corpus and manually inspect the answer’s grounding. Check what indexing process is used, where extracted text is stored, how updates are detected and whether access controls follow the original file permissions. The gateway cannot restore permissions that the adapter or storage layer does not expose.

SQL and NoSQL databases

Use a read-only database account for an initial trial. Define which schemas, tables or collections the adapter can see, then test both ordinary questions and attempts to request unrelated records. A successful natural-language answer does not by itself show that row-level authorization is correctly enforced.

Vector stores and analytical sources

Vector retrieval can improve relevance for large document sets, while DuckDB-style analytical access is suited to local or structured analysis. Measure whether returned context is accurate for your corpus, not just whether the model produces fluent text. Keep source identifiers in the response or logs when your review process requires traceability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HTTP APIs, agent tools and MCP

HTTP and tool adapters can turn an answer into an action, which raises the risk level. Begin with idempotent, read-only operations, explicit timeouts and narrowly scoped credentials. MCP integration should be treated as a separate trust boundary: inspect each server’s tools, arguments, network access and update process before exposing it to an agent.

How do you perform a first ORBIT evaluation?

The safest evaluation is incremental: establish the gateway, connect one source, test the data path, then add tools only after the read path is understood.

  1. Read the current repository instructions. Start at the official ORBIT repository. Image names, tags, environment variables and default credentials can change, so use the current README and documentation rather than copying an old example.
  2. Choose an evaluation boundary. Decide whether the gateway and model will run locally, whether a hosted provider is acceptable, which network can reach the data source and which data is safe for testing.
  3. Select an installation route. The project documents Docker images for Ollama, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter and Cohere flavors, plus a local installation path. Docker quick starts include persistent data volumes; the Ollama flavor also persists downloaded models.
  4. Configure the server and provider. Apply the current server settings and inference-provider configuration. For local Ollama use, apply the documented Ollama preset. Do not assume a provider key, model name or default endpoint from an older deployment.
  5. Add one adapter. Use the documented adapter YAML format and a least-privilege credential. Keep the first dataset small and non-sensitive, and record the expected answers before testing.
  6. Exercise normal and adversarial requests. Test valid retrieval, missing records, unauthorized subjects, malformed inputs, timeouts and provider failure. For a tool, test rejected arguments and repeated execution as well as the happy path.
  7. Inspect operations. Verify authentication, quotas, audit events, error handling, monitoring signals and provider fallback behavior in your own environment. Confirm that logs do not expose secrets or unnecessary personal data.
  8. Expand only after review. Add a second source, composite retrieval or MCP tool after the first adapter’s permissions and data path are documented.

How do Docker and local installation differ?

Docker is the quickest way to reproduce the project’s documented evaluation flavors and to keep gateway state in explicit volumes. A local installation can fit an existing Python or system-service workflow, but it makes dependency versions, upgrades and rollback your responsibility.

Approach Useful when Operational trade-off
Docker image You want a repeatable evaluation or isolated service boundary You must manage image provenance, volume backups, networking and tag updates
Local install You need integration with an existing host or development environment You must pin runtime and package dependencies and design your own service supervision
Ollama flavor You want the documented local-model path Model downloads consume persistent storage and local hardware must handle the selected model
Hosted-provider flavor You need access to a hosted inference service Outbound data handling, provider availability and account controls become part of the review

Do not treat the presence of an image as a production recommendation. Before exposing a deployment, pin versions where your change process requires it, protect volumes, restrict inbound access, rotate credentials and test restore and rollback.

What authentication and access controls does ORBIT document?

The authentication documentation describes password hashing, bearer tokens, sessions and role-based access control. Those mechanisms can support a conventional identity boundary, but their effectiveness depends on secret management, transport security, account lifecycle, role design and administrative practice.

Strict-authentication behavior

ORBIT documents a strict-authentication setting with important boundaries. When enabled, API-key-only clients can be rejected, the usual API-key Bearer fallback is disabled, and the MCP mount is not covered by that flag. The documentation also states that with strict mode enabled, ORBIT refuses to mount MCP at startup. Because this behavior is version-sensitive, verify the current configuration reference before enabling it in a deployment that depends on MCP.

Questions to answer before production

  • Which users, services and agents receive tokens, and how are they revoked?
  • Are roles mapped to individual adapters, tools, datasets and administrative actions?
  • Can a tool call reach a network or credential that the requesting user should not reach?
  • Are audit records protected from alteration and retained for the period your policy requires?
  • What happens when the identity provider, secret manager or model provider is unavailable?

Is ORBIT compliant or independently secure?

No. The project publishes a security architecture that maps documented capabilities to NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 control objectives, but that mapping is not a certification and does not prove that a particular installation is compliant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project’s security material says compliance depends on validating operational controls, network security, host hardening, storage, external services and administrative procedures. Your review should therefore cover the entire system: gateway code and configuration, container or host, adapters, model provider, identity service, secrets, logs, backups, monitoring and incident response.

Area Deployment-specific checks
Network Limit ingress and egress, segment databases and tools, and document every outbound provider connection.
Secrets Use a controlled secret store, rotate credentials and prevent keys from entering adapter YAML, images or logs.
Data Classify prompts and retrieved records, set retention rules and test deletion and backup restoration.
Identity Review roles, token lifetime, session handling, administrator access and external OIDC dependencies.
Operations Patch images and dependencies, monitor failures, preserve audit integrity and rehearse provider or adapter outages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How does ORBIT compare with a model router?

ORBIT and a model-routing gateway can overlap, but they solve different primary problems. ORBIT is centered on connecting inference to private structured and unstructured data, agents and tools. A routing-focused gateway is usually evaluated first on provider abstraction, model selection, retries, spend controls and latency across model APIs.

The project’s comparison material frames ORBIT around private data access and describes alternatives such as LiteLLM around model calling and routing. That is a vendor-authored comparison, not a neutral benchmark. Choose based on the capability you need first:

  • Choose an ORBIT-style gateway when adapters, retrieval, MCP or tool execution are central requirements.
  • Choose a routing layer when the main problem is switching among model providers, applying routing policies or standardizing model calls.
  • Combine layers cautiously when you need both; define which layer owns authentication, logging, retries, quotas and provider credentials so controls do not conflict.

What are ORBIT’s main limitations and failure modes?

The central limitation is architectural responsibility: one gateway can simplify integration while concentrating security and operational complexity. A fluent answer may hide an incomplete retrieval result, an over-privileged adapter or a provider that received sensitive context.

Common failure modes

  • Model works but data is missing: inspect adapter credentials, network reachability, indexing state and source filters.
  • Retrieval is plausible but wrong: reduce the corpus, inspect returned context and test source identifiers before changing the model.
  • Tool calls fail: check MCP or API server reachability, argument schemas, timeouts and the tool’s own authentication.
  • Requests fail after an upgrade: compare current image tags, configuration names and migration notes with your pinned deployment.
  • Data leaves the expected boundary: trace inference, identity, secret, storage and telemetry connections rather than looking only at the gateway host.
  • Fallback masks an outage: ensure provider fallback does not route regulated data to an unapproved provider.

Who is ORBIT a good fit for?

ORBIT is a reasonable candidate for teams that want an OpenAI-compatible application interface while they experiment with private retrieval, multi-source access or tool-using agents. It is especially relevant when the team can operate containers or services, manage credentials and review the full data path.

It is a poor fit for a team seeking a turnkey SaaS with no infrastructure ownership, or for a regulated workload that assumes a control mapping alone supplies compliance evidence. In those cases, the required identity, network, logging, retention and provider controls must be established before the gateway becomes part of the production architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an existing OpenAI SDK call ORBIT without rewriting the application?

The project presents an OpenAI-compatible interface, so clients built around the standard request and response shape are the natural starting point. You still need to configure the endpoint, credentials, model or provider settings, and any ORBIT-specific adapter or tool parameters.

Does ORBIT keep prompts out of hosted model providers?

Not necessarily. A hosted inference provider can receive the prompt and retrieved context unless your architecture prevents that path. Confirm provider terms, region, retention and outbound network policy for the exact configuration you deploy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can ORBIT enforce the permissions in my database or file system automatically?

Only to the extent that the adapter and its credentials expose those permissions. Use least-privilege accounts and test requests for another user or dataset; do not assume natural-language filtering is an authorization control.

What should I back up in an ORBIT deployment?

Back up configuration, adapter definitions, persistent gateway state, model or index data where applicable, and the records needed to restore audit history. Keep secrets in a separate managed system and document how to rotate them during recovery.
