OCI Generative AI is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s managed platform for enterprise AI. It combines hosted and custom models with retrieval, vector stores, memory, tool calling, agent runtimes, and governance controls. You can use it for ordinary chat and embeddings, or build agents that search documents, generate validated SQL, run code, call business functions, and preserve conversation context.
The practical choice is to match the service to the job: Enterprise AI Models for inference, Enterprise AI Agents for multi-step reasoning and actions, file search and vector stores for unstructured data, SQL Search/NL2SQL for structured databases, and OCI-managed Applications and Deployments when you need a custom runtime.

What is OCI Generative AI?
Oracle describes OCI Generative AI as a fully managed Oracle Cloud Infrastructure service for building, deploying, and operating generative-AI applications at enterprise scale. In practical terms, it is a set of managed capabilities rather than a single chatbot: model inference, embeddings, reranking, retrieval, agent orchestration, custom-model hosting, memory, tools, and controls for identity and networking.
Hosted pretrained models are available from the OCI Console, APIs, and command-line tools. Teams can also import, fine-tune, and host custom models on dedicated AI clusters. Availability of particular models, regions, quotas, and pricing changes over time, so check the current OCI service documentation before committing an architecture.

- Generation and conversation: question answering, drafting, summarization, classification, and virtual-assistant responses.
- Semantic retrieval: embeddings represent text as vectors for similarity search; reranking orders retrieved passages by relevance.
- Agentic work: an agent plans a task, retrieves context, calls tools, maintains state, and returns a result rather than producing one isolated completion.

When should I use OCI Enterprise AI Models?
Choose Enterprise AI Models when your application mainly needs inference: send an input, receive a prediction or generated output, and handle workflow logic in your own code.

Chat models support question answering, drafting, summarization, and conversational assistants. They are appropriate when the application already knows which prompt and context to send and does not need the model to decide among several tools.
Embeddings and semantic search
Embedding models convert text into vectors. Store those vectors in a compatible vector index, then retrieve passages whose meaning is close to a user’s query. This is useful for knowledge bases, document discovery, clustering, and recommendation features. Retrieval quality depends on chunking, metadata, permissions, and how current the source documents are; an embedding model does not automatically make stale or incomplete content authoritative.
Reranking
A reranker scores an initial set of search results and reorders them by relevance. A common pipeline is: create an embedding for the query, retrieve a broad candidate set, rerank the candidates, and provide the best passages to a generation model. Reranking can improve ordering without requiring a larger generation model, but it cannot recover a document that was never indexed or retrieved.
Custom models
Import or fine-tune a model when domain vocabulary, formatting, behavior, or deployment constraints justify the additional operational work. Dedicated AI clusters provide a managed hosting path, but you still need to evaluate training data, model licenses, serving capacity, latency, and rollback procedures.

What is the OCI Responses API and how do agents use it?
Oracle calls the OCI Responses API the primary API for agentic workflows. It is OpenAI-compatible and provides a common interface for model interaction and orchestration, while OCI resources supply files, vector stores, containers, conversations, projects, and memory.
Tools available to a Responses API agent
- File Search: retrieve relevant material from uploaded files and vector stores.
- Code Interpreter: execute supported code for analysis or transformation in a managed environment.
- Function Calling: request that your application invoke an approved business function, such as checking an order or opening a ticket.
- MCP Calling: connect to tools exposed through the Model Context Protocol when your organization operates an MCP server.
- Conversation state: retain turn-by-turn context for an interaction.
- Memory: use short-term memory compaction for long sessions and long-term memory for information that should persist beyond one conversation.
Projects group related resources and policies. Containers provide an execution environment for supported workloads. These objects let an application separate data, runtime, and conversation concerns instead of embedding everything in one prompt.
When is a hosted agentic application a better fit?
Use a hosted agentic application when you want OCI to manage more of the agent runtime and deployment path. This suits teams that need an agent endpoint and managed infrastructure but do not want to operate every container, network, and identity detail themselves. Use Applications and Deployments instead when you need to package a custom runtime, control its container image, or integrate specialized storage and networking.
How do OCI AI agents connect to enterprise data?
Use different tools for unstructured documents and structured databases. The distinction matters because retrieval and SQL have different failure modes, permissions, and validation requirements.
Unstructured data: files, vector stores, and RAG
For policies, manuals, contracts, tickets, and other documents, ingest files, create searchable representations in a vector store, and let File Search retrieve passages at runtime. The agent then grounds its answer in those passages. Design the index around document ownership, version, effective date, and access group so that retrieval does not expose content a user cannot view.
Document freshness is an operational responsibility. Define an ingestion schedule, remove superseded versions, record source metadata, and test queries whose answers changed recently. Retrieval-augmented generation can cite or quote the supplied passages, but it cannot guarantee correctness when the source is ambiguous or absent.

Structured data: SQL Search and NL2SQL
SQL Search/NL2SQL converts a natural-language request into validated SQL using semantic enrichment and structured-data metadata. It is the appropriate path for questions such as “What were regional sales last quarter?” when the answer must come from governed tables rather than documents.
Schema descriptions, business definitions, joins, row-level permissions, and SQL validation determine the result. Restrict generated statements to approved operations, apply database identities and least privilege, and log both the user request and the executed SQL. Natural-language convenience does not remove the need for database governance.

What is the difference between OCI Generative AI and Generative AI Agents?
OCI Generative AI is the broader platform for models, agents, data tools, hosting, and governance. The standalone Generative AI Agents service is a fully managed virtual-agent product that exposes RAG, SQL, and function-calling tools through agent endpoints, an Agent Development Kit, management and client APIs, CLIs, SDKs, and Cloud Shell.

These are architectural options, not mutually exclusive products. A team might prototype with a managed agent, then move selected workloads to the Responses API or a custom deployment when control, integration, or data-boundary requirements increase.
Which adjacent Oracle AI services should I use?
OCI Enterprise AI is positioned as an end-to-end portfolio. Select a specialized service when the input or output is not primarily a generative text response.

- Digital Assistant: conversational bots and dialog experiences.
- OCI Language: sentiment, entity recognition, translation, and other text analysis.

How do I design an OCI agent from request to response?
Start with the data and action boundaries, then select the runtime. The following sequence avoids building an agent before its permissions and sources are defined.
- Define the outcome. Decide whether the application needs generation, retrieval, a database answer, an external action, or a combination.
- Classify the data. Separate unstructured files from structured tables. Record owners, retention rules, update frequency, and user entitlements.
- Select the model path. Use a hosted model for standard inference; evaluate import or fine-tuning only when a documented requirement warrants it.
- Prepare retrieval or SQL metadata. Create file chunks and vector indexes for documents, or semantic enrichment and approved schemas for NL2SQL.
- Define tools explicitly. Register only the functions and MCP servers the agent needs. Specify input schemas, timeouts, retries, and safe failure responses.
- Choose hosting. Use a hosted agentic application for managed operation, or Applications and Deployments for a custom container runtime.
- Configure identity and network controls. Apply IAM policies, private endpoints where required, API keys or OAuth, and Zero Trust Packet Routing according to your tenancy design.
- Add guardrails and observability. Constrain topics and tools, log prompts and tool calls under your data policy, and retain audit evidence.
- Test adversarially. Check prompt injection, unauthorized retrieval, malformed function arguments, unsafe SQL, stale documents, and service timeouts before production.
- Operate with change control. Version prompts, indexes, schemas, model selections, and tool contracts so that a changed answer can be traced to a specific deployment.
What governance and security controls are available?
OCI’s governance design combines identity, network boundaries, and runtime controls. IAM policies determine which principals can invoke models, read files, use vector stores, deploy agents, or call databases. Private endpoints keep supported traffic within controlled network paths. API keys and OAuth provide programmatic authentication, while Zero Trust Packet Routing adds explicit network-path policy.
Guardrails regulate model behavior and tool use at runtime. They should complement, not replace, authorization: a guardrail may block a disallowed topic, but IAM and database permissions must still prevent unauthorized data access. Define who can change prompts, tools, indexes, and policies, and send relevant events to your audit and monitoring systems.
What does OCI cost, and is there a free trial?
Prices, model availability, regional support, quotas, and free-tier eligibility are volatile and are not stated consistently across all services. Obtain a current estimate for your region and workload rather than extrapolating from a different model or service.
Oracle’s current AI Services page advertises a 30-day trial account with US$300 in credit. It also lists free tiers for OCI Speech, Language, Vision, Document Understanding, Machine Learning in Oracle AI Database, and OCI Data Labeling. Treat those figures as the terms advertised by Oracle in 2026, not a permanent entitlement; confirm limits, eligible regions, expiration, and payment requirements before deployment.
What commonly goes wrong with OCI AI projects?
- The agent answers from stale content: add source versioning, scheduled ingestion, and tests for recently changed policies.
- RAG retrieves plausible but irrelevant passages: improve chunk boundaries and metadata, increase candidate retrieval, and use reranking.
- NL2SQL returns the wrong metric: define business terms in semantic metadata, expose approved views, and require SQL validation and human review for sensitive reports.
- A tool performs an unintended action: narrow function schemas, require confirmation for destructive operations, and enforce authorization in the target system.
- Users see data they should not see: align vector-store filters, file permissions, IAM, and database row-level controls; do not rely on the prompt to enforce access.
- Latency or quota errors appear in production: measure each stage separately—retrieval, reranking, model generation, and tool calls—and configure timeouts, retries, and capacity for the selected region.
- A model or feature is unavailable: verify region and model support, maintain a fallback configuration, and avoid hard-coding preview feature names.
How should I choose among OCI AI options?
Use this decision sequence rather than starting with a product name:
- If you only need a prediction, embedding, ranking, or generated response, start with Enterprise AI Models.
- If the system must decide which data source or function to use, retain context, or complete several steps, use Enterprise AI Agents through the Responses API or a hosted agentic application.
- If answers come from documents, add files, vector stores, and File Search; if they come from tables, add SQL Search/NL2SQL.
- If you need a custom runtime or specialized libraries, package the agent with Applications and Deployments.
- If the workload is transcription, translation, image analysis, or document field extraction, evaluate the adjacent specialized AI service first.
- At every stage, compare identity integration, network boundary, guardrails, auditability, model control, and operational ownership.
Oracle promotes workshops, tutorials, and hands-on labs for learning these services. A small proof of concept should use representative documents, schemas, permissions, and failure cases; a generic demo cannot establish production accuracy or security.

Does OCI support an OpenAI-compatible API?
Yes. The OCI Responses API is documented as OpenAI-compatible and is Oracle’s primary API for agentic workflows. Compatibility does not mean every model, parameter, tool, or response behavior is identical, so test the exact features your client library uses.
Can an OCI agent remember information between conversations?
The Responses API includes short-term memory compaction for long sessions and long-term memory resources for information intended to persist. Decide what may be retained, for how long, and under which user or tenant identity before enabling persistent memory.
Can OCI agents call tools outside Oracle Cloud?
