Spinifex is the closer fit when your migration depends on AWS-shaped automation, but only for the AWS services and operations it actually implements. Its migration documentation describes AWS-compatible interfaces for services including EC2, VPC, EBS, S3, IAM, STS, ELBv2, ACM, ECR, ECS and EKS, plus use of AWS CLI, SDKs, Terraform, selected kubectl workflows and S3-compatible clients. OpenStack takes a different route: it exposes its own documented APIs for Compute, Identity, Image, Networking, Object Storage and Block Storage. That distinction changes the amount and type of work involved in moving workloads to infrastructure your organization operates.

Neither option makes every AWS workload portable without changes. The practical choice comes from mapping your workload’s exact API calls, authentication behavior, networking, storage and managed-service dependencies to the destination’s current coverage, then piloting a representative application.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
OpenStack Organizations already operating around OpenStack APIs, integrations and deployment practices Separate APIs for Compute, Identity, Image, Networking, Object Storage and Block Storage; some services use microversions Self-managed private and hosted clouds; deployment varies by distribution and architecture Oct 2026
Spinifex Teams that want to retain AWS-oriented tooling on self-managed infrastructure Vendor reports 392 AWS API actions; lists EC2, EBS, S3, VPC, IAM, load balancing, EKS, ECR, ECS and RDS as available, with Bedrock and Lambda on its roadmap Bare-metal, on-premise and edge deployments Oct 2026

The table reflects published documentation and product-page claims, not an independent compatibility benchmark. Service availability and action counts can change between releases.

Why does the API layer change an on-prem migration?

An API is the contract used by provisioning tools, applications and operators to create resources, pass credentials, handle errors and query state. When that contract resembles the one your team already uses, the migration can concentrate on endpoints, credentials, data movement and operational procedures instead of rewriting every automation module.

Compatibility is narrower than resemblance. A provider may recognize the same service and resource names yet differ in supported operations, request parameters, response fields, pagination, retry behavior, quotas, asynchronous state transitions or authorization semantics. A workload that creates an instance and attaches a volume may work while a less common networking or load-balancer operation fails. Treat “AWS-compatible” as a scope to verify, not as a guarantee of interchangeability.

OpenStack and Spinifex therefore move the migration boundary in different places:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • With OpenStack, the destination contract is OpenStack’s service APIs. Your automation usually needs an OpenStack-aware provider, SDK or integration, plus OpenStack authentication and resource semantics.
  • With Spinifex, the stated goal is to preserve AWS-facing interfaces where implemented. Existing AWS-oriented tools may need fewer structural changes, but each service and operation still has to be checked.

What APIs does OpenStack provide?

OpenStack’s official API documentation catalogs a service-specific ecosystem. It covers Compute for server instances, Identity for authentication and authorization, Image for images, Networking for networks and ports, Object Storage for containers and objects, and Block Storage for volumes. The documentation also labels API status and describes microversions for some services, allowing a client to request a defined revision of an API contract.

This model is explicit rather than AWS-shaped. A platform team chooses clients and integrations that understand OpenStack services, authentication and deployment-specific endpoints. The API index demonstrates breadth, but it does not by itself prove that a particular third-party tool, Terraform resource or application integration will connect to every OpenStack deployment. The enabled services, versions, policy configuration and chosen distribution still matter.

What that means for existing automation

Automation written for OpenStack can remain conceptually consistent when moving between compatible OpenStack environments, provided the target exposes the required services and versions. Automation written specifically for AWS generally needs a provider or adapter that targets OpenStack. Resource naming, identity projects, network constructs, images and storage classes should be treated as migration items rather than assumed equivalents.

What AWS-compatible interfaces does Spinifex document?

Spinifex’s migration guide presents the platform as an AWS-compatible destination that can run on infrastructure the customer manages. It lists EC2, VPC, EBS, S3, IAM, STS, ELBv2, ACM, ECR, ECS and EKS, and says AWS CLI, AWS SDKs, Terraform, certain Kubernetes workflows using aws eks get-token, and S3-compatible clients can be used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its product page, published by the vendor, reports 392 AWS API actions. The same page identifies EC2, EBS, S3, VPC, IAM, load balancing, EKS, ECR, ECS and RDS as available, while showing Bedrock and Lambda as roadmap items. The count is a vendor-published figure whose date and release scope can change; it is not an independent measurement of behavioral parity.

How to read the service list

A service name is only the first filter. Ask which API operations are implemented, which request and response fields are supported, and whether the behavior matches what your client expects. For example, an S3-compatible client may perform common object operations while relying on a feature, consistency expectation or error code that is outside the documented subset. Likewise, an EKS-compatible workflow may cover token generation and cluster access without reproducing every managed-control-plane feature available in AWS.

The migration guide is useful evidence that these tools are intended to work with Spinifex. It is not evidence that every AWS account configuration, SDK call, Terraform resource or application behavior transfers unchanged.

Does my AWS Terraform work on-prem?

Sometimes, but only where the provider resources and underlying API operations are implemented with the behavior your configuration requires. The safe answer is obtained by inventorying your configuration and validating a representative plan and apply against the exact Spinifex release you will operate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory resource types and data sources. Export the Terraform configuration and state inventory, then list every resource, data source, module and provider feature used in production. Include less-visible dependencies such as IAM policies, security groups, route tables, load-balancer listeners, image lookups and object-storage initialization.
  2. Map each resource to an API operation set. A high-level resource name is not enough. Record the create, read, update, delete, attach, detach, describe and tagging calls that the provider makes, along with any waiters or asynchronous status checks.
  3. Check current Spinifex coverage. Compare that operation inventory with the release-specific service and action documentation. Treat the published 392-action count as an aggregate indicator, not proof that your particular Terraform resources are complete.
  4. Separate provider changes from workload changes. Identify endpoint configuration, regions or zones, credential sources, TLS settings and provider aliases that must change. Keep those edits isolated so that application modules remain easy to review and revert.
  5. Use a disposable state and environment. Initialize a separate backend or state workspace, create only non-production resources, and inspect the plan for unexpected replacements. Do not point a migration experiment at the production state file.
  6. Exercise updates and destruction. A successful first apply tests only creation. Change tags, security rules, instance attributes and attached storage, then destroy the test environment to expose unsupported update paths, dependency ordering and cleanup gaps.
  7. Pilot a representative workload. Include the application traffic pattern, backup process, monitoring, failover and recovery procedure. Record every manual workaround; a migration that technically deploys but requires permanent exceptions may not deliver the expected operational benefit.

This process also applies to AWS SDK and CLI automation. Replace “Terraform resource” with each SDK client and command your systems call, and validate both success and failure paths.

What migration work remains even with AWS API compatibility?

API compatibility can reduce rewrites, but it does not remove the surrounding migration tasks. Plan for the following areas explicitly.

Provider endpoints and configuration

AWS clients normally discover regional endpoints, credentials and signing behavior from AWS conventions. An on-premise target may require a different endpoint, region naming scheme, certificate chain, profile or credential source. Keep these values configurable and document how operators switch between the source and destination without mixing credentials.

Identity and authorization

IAM and STS compatibility must be checked at the policy and token level. Inventory roles, trust relationships, temporary credentials, service identities and automation users. Confirm not only that a policy document is accepted, but that the resulting allow and deny decisions protect the same resources and actions. Applications that depend on account, organization or resource-identifier semantics may need redesign.

Networking

List VPCs or networks, subnets, routes, security groups, network ACLs, private endpoints, DNS dependencies, load balancers and ingress paths. Equivalent names do not guarantee equivalent packet behavior. Validate MTU, address allocation, east-west reachability, internet egress, health checks and failure handling in the target topology.

Images and instance behavior

Record image formats, operating-system versions, initialization scripts, metadata access, device naming, guest agents and boot-time assumptions. An image that launches successfully may still expose different block-device names, metadata responses or lifecycle events. Rebuild or parameterize images when those differences affect startup or configuration management.

Storage and data movement

Classify data by durability, latency, replication, snapshot, encryption and recovery requirements. Test volume attach and detach, snapshot creation and restore, object versioning, multipart transfers and backup verification where your workload uses them. Data migration time, bandwidth and cutover coordination can dominate the project even when API changes are small.

Managed services

Self-managed infrastructure changes who operates databases, queues, certificates, container registries and control planes. Spinifex’s product page lists RDS as available and shows Bedrock and Lambda as roadmap items, but those labels do not establish feature-by-feature equivalence. For every managed dependency, decide whether it will run on the destination, remain in AWS, be replaced by another service or be redesigned in the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Observability, quotas and recovery

Recreate metrics, logs, traces, alert thresholds, capacity limits, rate limits, backup schedules and incident runbooks. AWS service quotas and managed-service failure behavior are not safe assumptions on a platform you operate. Define who responds when a host, storage pool, network fabric or control-plane component fails.

How do the deployment and operating models differ?

The biggest non-API difference is responsibility. OpenStack deployments commonly involve a set of control-plane and data-plane services whose installation, upgrades, networking and storage are chosen and operated by the organization or its provider. The API documentation establishes the service surface, but it does not prescribe one universal topology or staffing model.

Spinifex is presented as software for self-managed bare-metal, on-premise and edge deployments. Its single-server installation guide names Ubuntu or Debian as supported operating systems and lists QEMU/KVM, OVN/Open vSwitch, Predastore, Viperblock and AWS CLI v2 among the installation components. Those details indicate a deployment path, not a universal bill of materials. Confirm current release prerequisites, hardware validation and high-availability options before committing production workloads.

Questions to answer before choosing self-hosting

  • Who owns initial installation and upgrades, and during what maintenance window?
  • Who patches the host operating system, virtualization layer, network components and storage services?
  • How are credentials, certificates, secrets and administrative access protected?
  • Where do backups live, and how is a full control-plane or host failure recovered?
  • What telemetry is available, and which team is on call when capacity or hardware fails?
  • Which hardware configurations are validated for the target release, and what happens when a component is replaced?

These are decision criteria rather than proof that one product requires more staff than the other. The sources establish Spinifex’s self-hosted installation model and OpenStack’s broad API catalog; they do not provide a head-to-head staffing, cost or maturity benchmark.

Which workloads favor OpenStack?

OpenStack is a natural candidate when your organization already has OpenStack operators, deployment automation and integrations, or when its internal platform contract is built around OpenStack service APIs. The separate Compute, Identity, Image, Networking, Object Storage and Block Storage references make service boundaries explicit and can fit teams that want to assemble or integrate those capabilities directly.

It is less attractive as a “drop-in AWS” destination if most of your automation is tightly coupled to AWS SDKs, AWS-specific Terraform resources or AWS identity semantics and you have no existing OpenStack expertise. In that case, the migration includes a provider and platform-model transition in addition to moving workloads.

Which workloads favor Spinifex?

Spinifex is worth evaluating when retaining AWS-oriented tooling is a primary requirement and your workload falls within its documented service and operation coverage. The migration guide’s AWS CLI, SDK, Terraform, Kubernetes-token and S3-client references can reduce the number of interfaces your team must replace.

That advantage is conditional. A workload depending on roadmap services, uncommon API operations, exact AWS managed-service behavior or broad cross-account semantics may require redesign or continued use of AWS. Confirm every critical dependency against current release documentation rather than relying on the aggregate action count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you compare the two platforms for a real migration?

Use a workload-specific scorecard instead of a generic feature checklist. The following dimensions expose the trade-offs that an API label can hide.

Decision area Questions for OpenStack Questions for Spinifex Evidence to collect
API and tooling fit Which OpenStack clients, SDKs and provider versions match the deployment? Which AWS services and exact operations are implemented? Provider logs, API references, operation matrices and a small proof of concept
Service coverage Are the required Compute, Identity, Image, Networking, Object Storage and Block Storage APIs enabled and compatible? Are required EC2, VPC, EBS, S3, IAM, STS, load-balancing, registry, container and Kubernetes operations covered? Release-specific coverage documentation and application dependency inventory
Migration scope How much provider, identity, network, image and state conversion is required? Can endpoint and credential changes be isolated while preserving application modules? Terraform plan/apply results, SDK traces and cutover runbook
Operating model Who operates the selected control-plane, network and storage architecture? Who installs, updates and supports the self-managed stack? On-call rota, upgrade policy, backup design and recovery exercise
Deployment and hardware What topology and hardware does the chosen OpenStack distribution require? Does the target release support your Ubuntu or Debian hosts, virtualization, networking and storage design? Validated configurations, prerequisites and failure-domain plan
Maturity and risk Are the API versions, integrations and operator skills established in your organization? How stable are the needed actions, and what is the support path for gaps? Release history, support terms, references and a documented rollback plan

What are the common compatibility traps?

Most failed assumptions occur at the edges of a service rather than in the first create call.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Counting services instead of operations: “S3 available” does not answer whether your encryption, multipart, versioning or lifecycle calls work.
  • Counting actions instead of behavior: An aggregate action total does not show parity in error handling, defaults, quotas or timing.
  • Assuming Terraform portability: Provider schemas, data sources, import behavior and update semantics can differ even when resource names look familiar.
  • Ignoring identity context: Policies that validate syntactically may authorize different principals, resources or cross-account paths.
  • Testing only a green-field deploy: Upgrades, restores, scale-out, failover and destroy operations reveal different gaps.
  • Leaving operations until the end: A self-hosted platform needs capacity planning, patching, monitoring, backup and incident ownership from day one.
  • Treating roadmap entries as commitments: Services shown as planned, including Bedrock and Lambda on the cited product page, should not be migration dependencies until the required release supports them.

How can you run a defensible proof of concept?

A useful proof of concept answers a migration question, not merely whether a virtual machine can boot.

  1. Select a representative slice. Include one compute workload, its network path, persistent storage, identity roles, image pipeline, observability and backup flow.
  2. Capture the source behavior. Save Terraform plans, SDK or CLI command traces, expected status transitions, latency objectives, policy decisions and recovery procedures from the AWS environment.
  3. Recreate the slice without production state. Use isolated credentials, test data and a separate state location. Record every endpoint, provider and image change.
  4. Exercise lifecycle paths. Create, update, scale, reboot, replace, snapshot, restore, fail and destroy the resources. Include negative tests for denied actions and unavailable dependencies.
  5. Run application and recovery tests. Verify user-facing behavior, data integrity, monitoring alerts, backup restoration and operator runbooks. Do not call the migration successful because provisioning alone passed.
  6. Publish a gap register. For each unsupported operation or changed behavior, classify it as configuration-only, automation rewrite, application change, service substitution or a reason to keep that dependency in AWS.
  7. Set a go/no-go threshold. Require explicit owners and mitigations for every critical gap, plus a rollback path that does not depend on an untested reverse migration.

Which should you choose: OpenStack or Spinifex?

Choose Spinifex when AWS-facing interfaces are central to your platform strategy, the required operations are documented as implemented, and your organization is prepared to run the underlying self-managed infrastructure. Its compatibility approach may reduce automation changes for workloads inside that supported subset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OpenStack when your team already operates around OpenStack APIs and integrations, needs its service-oriented ecosystem, or is willing to make the provider and platform-model changes that an AWS-to-OpenStack move entails. OpenStack’s extensive API catalog is an advantage for an OpenStack-aligned operating model, not proof of AWS API compatibility.

The evidence does not establish that either platform is universally easier, cheaper, more mature or more compatible. Map real API calls, test lifecycle behavior, account for identity and networking differences, and assess whether your team can operate the destination before selecting a migration path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an AWS-compatible API the same thing as running AWS services?

No. Compatibility describes an interface and the subset of operations a destination implements; it does not provide AWS’s global control plane, proprietary managed-service behavior, regions or support model. Applications can still encounter differences in defaults, limits, timing, errors and availability.

Can an OpenStack cloud accept AWS SDK calls without an adapter?

OpenStack exposes its own service APIs, so an AWS SDK does not automatically become an OpenStack client. You generally need an OpenStack-aware provider, SDK or integration, and must map AWS-specific identity, networking and resource assumptions to OpenStack constructs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I verify behind Spinifex’s 392-action figure?

Ask for the release-specific operation list, supported request and response fields, authentication requirements, quotas and known deviations for the exact services your workload uses. Then exercise create, update, failure, restore and delete paths; the aggregate count alone cannot establish application compatibility.

Do Kubernetes workloads need changes when moving to an AWS-compatible platform?

Spinifex documents selected workflows using kubectl with aws eks get-token, but cluster access is only one part of Kubernetes operation. Check networking, load-balancer integration, persistent volumes, container registry access, identity and upgrade procedures for the target environment.
