OpenClaw is a self-hosted assistant and gateway; LangGraph, CrewAI, the OpenAI Agents SDK, and similar projects are developer frameworks for building agent applications. That distinction matters more than a simple feature checklist. Choose OpenClaw when you want a ready-to-operate assistant connected to chat channels, tools, models, and automations. Choose a framework when you need to design, test, deploy, and maintain a product-specific agent workflow.

OpenClaw advertises no subscription, hosted tier, or token charge for the product itself. You still pay for model-provider calls, hosting, storage, networking, and possibly local-model hardware. Frameworks can likewise have free open-source cores while the models, infrastructure, monitoring, and managed services around them incur separate costs.

The short answer: assistant versus application framework

OpenClaw and an agent framework occupy different layers of the stack. OpenClaw packages an operating assistant, gateway, channel connectors, controls, plugins, skills, automations, and multi-agent routing that you run yourself. A framework supplies libraries or runtimes so a developer can create an agent application with a chosen loop, tools, memory model, user interface, and deployment architecture.

This is why “which is better?” has no universal answer. A person who wants one assistant reachable from messaging apps has a different requirement from a team building a customer-support product, a document-processing pipeline, or a regulated workflow that must resume from a checkpoint after a crash.

  • Pick OpenClaw for a self-hosted, ready-to-run personal or team assistant with channels and automation already represented in the product.
  • Pick a framework when your main work is engineering an application: defining state, orchestration, permissions, evaluation, APIs, user experience, and production operations.
  • Combine them only deliberately. An OpenClaw gateway can be the user-facing or channel layer while a separately built service performs a specialized workflow, but that adds integration and security responsibilities.

What OpenClaw provides

A self-hosted gateway

OpenClaw’s official documentation positions it as a gateway that connects messaging channels with AI agents. The product includes a control interface, onboarding, channel connections, plugins, skills, scheduled automation, mobile companion nodes, and multi-agent routing. You operate the gateway rather than signing up for a hosted OpenClaw service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project’s official product wording is: “No subscription. No hosted tier. No token.” It also says there is no paid version. That describes the OpenClaw software; it does not waive charges from a model provider, cloud host, internet service, storage vendor, or hardware supplier.

Channels, tools, and automations

The channel layer lets an assistant receive and send messages through supported chat integrations. Tools extend what an agent can do, while skills and plugins package additional behavior or integrations. Scheduled jobs and heartbeat-style automation support recurring work instead of limiting the assistant to interactive prompts. Mobile nodes can act as companion endpoints for a self-hosted deployment.

Workspace memory and routing

Community documentation describes workspace memory, tool use, heartbeat and cron automation, and routing among multiple agents. These features are useful when one installation serves several purposes—for example, a general assistant, a calendar agent, and a research agent with different instructions and permissions. The exact behavior and configuration can change between releases, so apply the current official documentation to a production deployment.

How developer frameworks differ

LangGraph and LangChain

LangGraph is described in a LangChain comparison as a fit for complex, stateful orchestration. Its appeal is explicit control over graph steps, transitions, persistence, and recovery. LangChain is the broader application-development ecosystem around models, tools, and integrations. This route suits teams that need to define an agent’s execution model rather than adopt a prebuilt assistant.

CrewAI

CrewAI is characterized as a role-based multi-agent framework aimed at rapid prototyping and workflows in which specialist roles collaborate. It is a natural fit when the design genuinely maps to roles such as planner, researcher, reviewer, and writer. If the workflow is actually a single deterministic process, adding several agents can create unnecessary coordination, latency, and debugging work.

OpenAI Agents SDK

The LangChain comparison presents the OpenAI Agents SDK as a relatively compact approach for scoped assistants and delegation between agents. It is appropriate when a small agent loop, tools, and handoffs cover the application without introducing a larger orchestration abstraction.

Microsoft Agent Framework

LangChain’s June 2026 comparison describes Microsoft Agent Framework as the unified successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel. Teams already committed to Microsoft tooling can evaluate it for Python or .NET development, especially when existing identity, hosting, and observability choices are part of the architecture.

Google ADK and LlamaIndex Workflows

The same comparison associates Google ADK with Google Cloud-oriented runtime needs and LlamaIndex Workflows with document-centric, event-driven pipelines. Choose these when the surrounding cloud ecosystem or document workflow is the primary architectural constraint, not simply because the names appear in an agent-framework list.

Cost: what “free” does and does not mean

OpenClaw’s product price

OpenClaw’s official site says there is no subscription, no hosted tier, no token charge, and no paid version. You can therefore run the product without an OpenClaw license or recurring OpenClaw subscription.

The costs that remain

Every useful deployment still has a workload cost. A hosted model provider may bill for input and output tokens, tool calls, or other usage. A self-hosted gateway may require a virtual machine, home server, storage, backups, bandwidth, monitoring, and an always-on connection. Running a local model can move spending from per-request API fees to hardware, electricity, model storage, and maintenance.

  • Model usage: provider pricing, context size, output volume, and the number of agents or tool calls.
  • Hosting: compute, memory, disk, network transfer, backups, and availability requirements.
  • Operations: updates, secrets management, access control, logs, incident response, and recovery testing.
  • Local inference: a capable CPU, GPU, or accelerator, plus power and storage, when models are not called remotely.

Why a framework price ranking would mislead

No reliable, comparable current plan-price table establishes that one of these frameworks is universally cheapest. Framework cores may be open source while associated model usage, hosting, observability, or managed services have different prices. A fair comparison must define one representative task, the provider and model, expected input and output volume, hosting arrangement, and which optional commercial services count. Verify each vendor’s own pricing on the publication date and for the region where you will operate.

A practical cost model

Estimate a month rather than comparing a software sticker price. Multiply expected requests by average input and output usage, add tool and retrieval calls, then add the fixed hosting and operational costs. For an OpenClaw installation, include the gateway host and channel infrastructure. For a framework application, include the service that runs the agent, databases or queues for state, observability, deployment, and the engineering time needed to build the missing assistant surface.

OpenClaw setup: what the installation path looks like

The official OpenClaw site documents an installer path, an npm package-manager path, and source installation, followed by onboarding. It lists desktop applications for macOS, Windows, and Linux. These are project claims that can change with a release, so use the installer and documentation labels shown by the current project rather than relying on an old command copied from a guide.

  1. Choose a host. Decide whether the gateway will run on a desktop, a server, or another machine that can remain available to the channels and automations you need. Plan where configuration, workspace memory, logs, and secrets will live.
  2. Install OpenClaw. Use the official shell installer or the npm installation route. If you need to inspect or modify the project, follow the documented source-installation path instead.
  3. Run onboarding. Start the documented onboarding command from the installed package. The wizard establishes the gateway configuration and the initial connection choices.
  4. Connect a model provider. Supply credentials for the provider you intend to use, or configure a local model if your hardware and supported runtime meet its requirements. Provider fees remain separate from OpenClaw.
  5. Connect channels. Add only the messaging channels that the assistant needs. Check callback, authentication, and delivery settings for each channel before making the gateway reachable to other users.
  6. Configure skills and plugins. Enable integrations one at a time and grant the narrowest permissions that satisfy the task. Treat third-party extensions as code that can access the data and tools exposed to them.
  7. Set automations and routing. Define scheduled jobs, heartbeat behavior, and multi-agent routes only after interactive messages work. Test the destination, schedule, and selected agent separately.
  8. Add mobile nodes if required. Pair companion devices according to the current documentation and verify what data and actions a node can receive.
  9. Test recovery. Stop and restart the gateway, confirm that configuration and workspace memory persist, and check that scheduled work does not duplicate or disappear.

Security and operational boundaries

Shell access deserves special attention

A community introduction reports that shell execution defaults to full access in the documented version it covered. That is a version-specific, security-sensitive observation rather than a permanent product guarantee. Before enabling shell tools, inspect the current official security and tool-permission documentation, identify the account under which commands run, and test the behavior in an isolated environment.

Protect the gateway like an internal service

  • Keep administrative interfaces off the public internet unless a deliberate authentication and network-control design protects them.
  • Use separate credentials for model providers, channels, plugins, and operating-system services.
  • Restrict tools by agent and task; an assistant that only drafts messages should not inherit file deletion or unrestricted command execution.
  • Log tool calls and automation runs, but remove tokens and personal data from logs where possible.
  • Back up configuration and workspace data, then practice restoring them on a clean host.
  • Review plugin and skill provenance before installation and remove integrations that are no longer needed.

Framework setup: the work you must design yourself

A framework does not generally give you a complete channel-connected assistant out of the box. Your implementation normally has to define the model client, system instructions, tools, state, routing, user interface or API, authentication, deployment, and monitoring.

Define the agent loop

Decide whether the model may call tools repeatedly, which events end a run, how failures are retried, and where a human approval is required. A simple scoped assistant may need only a model, a tool registry, and a handoff. A long-running workflow may need an explicit graph or event system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose state and recovery semantics

Ask whether state must survive a process restart, whether two runs can update the same record, and how a partially completed job resumes. LangGraph is specifically associated with explicit stateful orchestration and checkpointing concerns; other frameworks can implement persistence, but you must verify the mechanism and operate the storage yourself.

Build the integration surface

Connect chat, web, email, or internal APIs; validate input; authenticate users; stream or queue responses; and handle rate limits. This is the work OpenClaw packages as part of a gateway, whereas a framework leaves the shape of the product to your team.

Add evaluation and observability

Record prompts, tool arguments, outputs, latency, failures, and cost in a privacy-conscious way. Create test cases for refusal, incorrect tool parameters, timeouts, duplicate events, and recovery after a crash. Framework choice should follow these operational requirements, not only the convenience of its first tutorial.

Decision criteria that separate the options

How much of the loop do you control?

OpenClaw gives you an operating assistant with configurable behavior. Frameworks expose more of the execution design, from individual tool calls to graph transitions and handoffs. Choose explicit control when business rules, approvals, or deterministic recovery are central; choose the packaged route when channel access and everyday assistance matter more than custom orchestration.

Must state survive restarts?

For a personal assistant, workspace memory and ordinary configuration may be sufficient. For a production workflow, define durable state, idempotency, checkpoints, and replay behavior before selecting a runtime. A process that loses its place after a restart is not equivalent to one that resumes safely.

What coordination pattern fits?

  • Single assistant: avoid multi-agent complexity unless separate permissions or expertise justify it.
  • Role collaboration: a role-based system such as CrewAI may map naturally to the design.
  • Graph or state machine: use an orchestration-oriented approach when transitions and recovery are first-class requirements.
  • Delegation: a compact agent SDK can be enough when one assistant hands a bounded task to another.
  • Channel-centered operation: OpenClaw is designed around a gateway connecting users, channels, tools, and agents.

Which language and ecosystem does the team already use?

Framework productivity depends on the language, deployment platform, identity system, and monitoring tools your engineers already maintain. Microsoft-focused Python or .NET teams may favor Microsoft Agent Framework; Google Cloud teams may value Google ADK; document-heavy teams may prefer LlamaIndex Workflows. The ecosystem fit can outweigh small differences in model abstractions.

Common failure modes and fixes

“It is free, so the deployment costs nothing.”

Cause: confusing OpenClaw’s no-subscription statement with zero operating cost. Fix: estimate model calls, host, storage, bandwidth, backups, and operations for the actual workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The assistant installed, but messages do not arrive.”

Cause: an incomplete channel authentication or callback configuration. Fix: verify the channel credentials, gateway reachability, event permissions, and logs; test one channel before adding others.

“A plugin can do more than intended.”

Cause: broad inherited tool permissions. Fix: isolate the integration, reduce its available tools, use separate credentials, and review current security guidance before re-enabling it.

“A framework prototype loses work after a restart.”

Cause: state exists only in process memory or lacks checkpoints. Fix: design durable state and recovery semantics, then test an interrupted run and a replay before production.

“Several agents make the result slower and less reliable.”

Cause: role splitting was added without a task that benefits from collaboration. Fix: start with one bounded agent, measure tool calls and latency, and introduce delegation only where it adds a clear capability or permission boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A selection checklist

  • Do you need a usable assistant and channel gateway now, or a code-level foundation for a product?
  • Who will patch the host, rotate credentials, monitor failures, and restore backups?
  • Which model providers and local runtimes are acceptable?
  • What data may leave your network, and what must remain local?
  • Does the workflow require durable checkpoints, human approvals, or deterministic replay?
  • Is the architecture a single assistant, role collaboration, graph orchestration, or delegation?
  • Which language and cloud ecosystem can your team support for years?
  • Have you costed the complete workload rather than the framework package alone?
  • Can you test permissions, prompt injection, tool misuse, duplicate events, and recovery before exposing the system to users?

Bottom line

OpenClaw is the more direct route to a self-hosted assistant connected to channels, tools, skills, plugins, automations, and multiple agents. Its product has no subscription, hosted tier, or token charge, but your model and infrastructure bills remain. LangGraph, CrewAI, the OpenAI Agents SDK, Microsoft Agent Framework, Google ADK, and LlamaIndex Workflows are better understood as ways to engineer specific agent applications. Select between them by the operating job, state and recovery requirements, coordination pattern, language ecosystem, security model, and total workload cost—not by a generic “free versus paid” label.
