Open-source software matters to software-defined vehicles because it gives automakers and suppliers a way to build on shared software foundations rather than duplicate every component behind closed interfaces. That collaboration can improve modularity, portability and development speed—but it does not make a vehicle safe, secure or maintainable by itself. Those outcomes depend on engineering evidence, clear governance and long-term ownership.

What makes a vehicle software-defined?

A software-defined vehicle (SDV) treats software as a central, changeable part of the product, not merely as code embedded in fixed-function electronic components. Its software spans in-vehicle systems and the tools and services used to develop, integrate and support them. The important shift is that software can be updated and extended over a vehicle’s life, so the architecture must support change rather than assume that every function is frozen at manufacture.

That shift creates a coordination problem. Vehicle software has to work across hardware, operating systems, middleware, applications, cloud services and vehicle fleets. If each organization builds its own incompatible foundation, teams repeatedly solve similar problems and then spend effort making the pieces work together. A modular architecture with reusable building blocks and defined interfaces can reduce that duplication and make it easier to change one part without redesigning everything around it.

The European Commission’s European Digital Vehicle Ecosystem describes its Software-defined Vehicle of the Future (SDVoF) stream as involving major European manufacturers and suppliers and emphasizing common, largely open-source building blocks, interfaces and tools. Its stated aim is not simply to publish code: it is to support modular software that is more maintainable and portable, and that can help shorten time to market.

Why is open-source software important for SDVs?

Open source offers a shared way to develop and inspect software foundations. When organizations can collaborate on common components, specifications and interfaces, they have more opportunity to avoid redundant engineering and to integrate systems without relying on a single supplier’s private implementation.

It can reduce duplicated engineering

Automakers and suppliers often face overlapping needs: a common component or tool may be useful to multiple projects. A shared project lets participants contribute improvements to a common codebase rather than maintain separate versions of similar software. The benefit is strongest when the component is genuinely reusable, its interfaces are stable enough for integration, and the participants agree how changes will be reviewed and maintained.

The Eclipse Foundation’s SDV Working Group describes its purpose as providing a forum to build and promote open-source software, specifications and open collaboration models for a scalable, modular, extensible vehicle software platform. That combination matters: reusable code without agreed interfaces can still be hard to integrate, while a specification without a functioning implementation may not solve a development team’s practical problem.

It can improve portability and supplier choice

Common interfaces and modular components can make it easier to move software between hardware or operating-system environments, or to replace one component without replacing the whole stack. This can give vehicle makers more options when selecting suppliers and reduce dependence on a proprietary implementation. Open source does not automatically guarantee portability, however. Projects need to design for it, test on relevant platforms and maintain interfaces that participating systems can actually use.

It creates a collaboration model across company boundaries

Vehicle software is developed across a value chain, not by one engineering team. An open project can give automakers, suppliers and other contributors a place to coordinate work on shared foundations. The scale of participation is evidence of activity, not proof that every project is mature or suitable for a production vehicle. The Eclipse Foundation’s 2026 annual report reported 52 members and 35 projects in its SDV Working Group. In January 2026, the VDA announced an expanded Eclipse-VDA memorandum involving 32 global companies, signaling broader alignment around open, interoperable and certifiable software foundations.

Is open source already used in automotive development?

Yes. Eclipse Foundation surveys show both broad use and strong expectations for open collaboration, while also pointing to substantial integration concerns.

Finding Survey or source What it indicates
98% recognized substantial value in SDV technologies Eclipse Foundation, 2024 survey of 300 automotive developers and business leaders Respondents saw SDV technologies as valuable; the figure is a survey finding, not a measured return on investment.
95% expected open source to improve SDV flexibility and scalability Eclipse Foundation, 2024 survey of 300 automotive developers and business leaders Respondents expressed an expectation about benefits, not a guarantee of results in every program.
79% used open-source tools and/or in-vehicle software for automotive development Eclipse Foundation, 2025 survey Open source is already part of many respondents’ development work.
39% of open-source users actively contributed to projects Eclipse Foundation, 2025 survey Use is broader than direct contribution; participation levels differ.

The survey figures should be read as evidence of industry sentiment and reported practice, not as a controlled comparison proving that open source causes lower costs or better vehicles. The 2024 survey covered 300 automotive developers and business leaders. The cited 2025 findings establish the percentages above, but do not provide a respondent count here. Those limits matter when using the numbers to make investment decisions.

Which open-source automotive projects and initiatives should engineers know?

These names represent different layers of collaboration. Some are broad coordination efforts, some focus on vehicle software platforms, and some are projects within a larger working group. They are related, but they are not interchangeable platforms or a single unified stack.

Initiative Documented role How to read its place in the ecosystem
Eclipse SDV Working Group Vendor-neutral collaboration around in-vehicle and around-vehicle applications, software, specifications and open collaboration models A forum and umbrella for projects; it is not one software package.
S-CORE, OpenSOVD and ThreadX Projects identified within the Eclipse SDV ecosystem Examples to investigate within the working group; their presence there does not establish that they share the same function or certification status.
European SDVoF ecosystem European Commission-backed coordination emphasizing common, largely open-source building blocks, interfaces and tools A cross-industry ecosystem involving alliances including Eclipse SDV, COVESA, AUTOSAR, SOAFEE and digital.auto.
Automotive Grade Linux and Linux Foundation initiatives Automotive software and SDV work focused on deployment, containers, virtualization and ecosystem coordination A separate set of open-source initiatives that contributes to the wider automotive landscape.
Eclipse-VDA memorandum Cross-value-chain alignment around open, interoperable and certifiable foundations; expanded to 32 global companies in January 2026 A collaboration signal rather than a software platform or certification in itself.

For engineers evaluating a project, the useful question is not simply whether it is open source. Check whether its interfaces fit the intended architecture, whether it runs on the required hardware and operating systems, and whether its release and maintenance practices fit the vehicle lifecycle. Also establish how safety and cybersecurity evidence will be produced and who will own support after integration.

Does open source reduce automotive development cost and time to market?

It can reduce repeated work and make collaboration more efficient, but the result depends on adoption, integration and maintenance. Open code may lower the need to build a component from scratch; it does not remove the work of evaluating it, adapting it, testing it, managing dependencies or supporting it through a vehicle program.

In its January 2026 announcement about the expanded Eclipse-VDA memorandum, the VDA cited potential reductions of up to 40% in development and maintenance effort and up to 30% faster time to market for the collaborative approach. These are stated as potential upper bounds in the announcement, not universal savings, a guaranteed outcome for an individual project, or evidence that every open-source adoption achieves those figures. A team should not apply them as a business case without checking the underlying assumptions against its own baseline, scope and integration costs.

Cost and schedule benefits are more plausible when a project can reuse a maintained component, contribute improvements upstream instead of carrying a private fork, and integrate through well-defined interfaces. They can be offset when a project has to adapt software to unique hardware, resolve incompatible dependencies, meet requirements that the upstream project does not address, or take on support that no other participant is willing to provide. Supplier independence is therefore a possible architectural advantage, not an automatic property of choosing an open-source license.

Is open source safe and secure enough for automotive systems?

It can be used in safety- and security-conscious development, but open source is not self-proving evidence of safety or cybersecurity. The relevant question is whether the software and its development process are supported by the controls, analysis and verification needed for the intended use and applicable standards.

Eclipse reports that S-CORE development is being prepared for alignment with ASPICE, ISO 26262 and ISO/SAE 21434. “Being prepared for alignment” does not mean the project is certified to those standards. Separately, Eclipse describes a 2025 IEC 61508 SIL 3 audit of the Trustable Software Framework. That is evidence of an assessment of that framework; it should not be read as a blanket safety approval for all open-source software, all Eclipse SDV projects or any particular vehicle.

For a vehicle program, safety and security arguments need to be tied to the actual software version, configuration and use case. An open repository can make code and project activity more visible, but visibility alone does not show that all relevant risks have been identified or that a release is suitable for deployment. Teams still need a controlled engineering process and evidence that matches their system’s requirements.

What governance does an automotive open-source project need?

Governance is what turns shared code into a resource a vehicle program can responsibly depend on. It establishes who can propose and review changes, how releases are made, how issues are handled and who will maintain the software over time.

The Eclipse Foundation’s 2025 survey highlights why governance cannot be treated as an afterthought. Respondents cited security (59%), licensing (43%), interoperability (36%) and long-term support (35%) as leading challenges when integrating open source. These percentages identify reported integration challenges; they do not measure the likelihood that a given project will fail.

Build an integration review around the main risks

  • Security: assess how vulnerabilities are reported, prioritized and fixed, and how the program will track affected versions and dependencies.
  • Licensing: identify the licenses and obligations associated with the code and dependencies, and establish a review process before distribution.
  • Interoperability: verify that interfaces, versions and assumptions work with the hardware, operating systems and other components in the intended vehicle architecture.
  • Long-term support: identify a responsible maintainer or support plan for the release the vehicle uses, including what happens if upstream priorities change.
  • Safety and cybersecurity evidence: map requirements, threat analysis and verification evidence to the actual configuration and applicable standards.
  • Release control: pin the versions used, review changes before integration and retain enough traceability to understand what entered a delivered software build.
  • Contribution strategy: decide whether the team will contribute fixes upstream, maintain a fork or rely on another participant, and account for the engineering cost of that choice.

A software bill of materials (SBOM) and a defined dependency-management process help make the components in a build visible and reviewable. They are inputs to governance, not substitutes for reviewing vulnerabilities, licensing or maintenance responsibility. Likewise, an active community can be useful, but project popularity alone does not establish a support commitment for a production vehicle’s full lifecycle.

How should a team decide whether to adopt an open-source SDV component?

Start with the requirement and lifecycle need, then assess the project against the vehicle architecture and the organization’s ability to support it. A practical decision should distinguish between a reusable foundation, a project that needs substantial adaptation and a component whose risks or obligations outweigh its benefits.

  1. Define the role. State what the component must do, where it sits in the architecture, what systems it must interface with and what constraints apply to its use.
  2. Check fit and portability. Confirm support for the target hardware and operating systems, and test interfaces with the components it must work alongside. Do not infer portability merely from open licensing.
  3. Review project health and governance. Examine release practices, contribution review, issue handling and the clarity of maintenance ownership. Decide who will respond if the project no longer meets the program’s needs.
  4. Assess licensing and dependencies. Record the code and dependency versions under consideration, review applicable licenses and decide how compliance will be tracked through integration and distribution.
  5. Plan security and safety evidence. Identify required analyses, verification, traceability and standard alignment for the specific intended use. Separate a project’s stated plans or assessments from evidence that applies to the software configuration being adopted.
  6. Estimate total effort. Compare the work to integrate, adapt, verify and maintain the component with the work required to build or source an alternative. Treat published savings as a hypothesis to validate, not a budget assumption.
  7. Choose a contribution and release model. Decide whether to upstream changes, carry a controlled fork or coordinate maintenance with other participants. Set a versioning and update process that fits the vehicle program.

Use this review to make an explicit decision: adopt as-is, adopt with additional controls or modifications, or choose another option. If a component is valuable but not yet suitable for the intended use, that can still make it useful for experimentation or an earlier development stage, provided the deployment boundary is clear.

What does open source change—and what does it not change?

Open source changes how organizations can collaborate on software: participants can build on shared code and specifications, contribute improvements and reduce dependence on a single supplier’s private implementation. In an SDV architecture, those possibilities are relevant because software must evolve across complex systems and over time.

It does not eliminate integration, accountability or lifecycle work. A vehicle maker still needs to decide what software enters a product, verify that it meets requirements, manage licenses and dependencies, address security risks and ensure that maintenance has an owner. The strongest case for open source is therefore not that “open” guarantees quality or savings; it is that shared foundations can make reuse and cross-company engineering more practical when paired with disciplined governance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does open source mean a car’s software is all public?

No. A vehicle program can use open-source components alongside proprietary software. Which code is available and what obligations apply depend on the components and their licenses; an open-source project does not make every part of a vehicle’s software public by default.

Can a company sell or support software built on open source?

Open-source code can be part of a commercial product or a paid support offering. The company still needs to comply with the applicable licenses and make clear which support, maintenance and update commitments it is actually providing.

Why do standards still matter if software is open and inspectable?

Inspection can help people examine code, but standards and engineering processes address broader questions such as requirements, risk analysis, verification and evidence. A project’s openness alone does not demonstrate that a particular vehicle system meets its applicable obligations.
