If you want an open-source way to find vulnerabilities and help fix them, start with a SAST-plus-LLM hybrid: it uses a static analyzer such as Semgrep or CodeQL to ground an AI agent’s investigation, then adds a patch and revalidation workflow. That is a different proposition from simply replacing a hosted scanner. You can also add security skills to an existing coding agent, or use separate tools to vet the agent skills and MCP servers your team installs.

The strongest choice depends on which part you need to replace: vulnerability detection, patch generation and verification, or governance around the agent itself. The projects below are not independently benchmarked against Amazon’s offerings, so treat maintainer descriptions as capabilities to evaluate—not proof of equivalent accuracy.

What counts as an open-source alternative for code remediation?

There is no single open-source product in this set that can be assumed to replace every feature of a hosted AI security service. The alternatives fall into three architectural families: tools that use an LLM to find or demonstrate exploitable behavior, security skill packs that extend an existing coding agent, and hybrids that combine deterministic static analysis with AI investigation and remediation. Semgrep’s July 20, 2026 comparison describes these as “LLM-led exploitgen,” “LLM-skill-boosting,” and “SAST+LLM hybrids.”

For a team seeking a repeatable code-fix loop, the hybrid family is the closest fit. A static analyzer supplies concrete findings; the model can help investigate whether a finding is exploitable in context and propose a change; a verification step checks whether the issue remains. This does not guarantee a correct or safe fix, but it gives reviewers more structure than asking a general-purpose coding agent to inspect a repository without a defined finding set.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Replacing detection: Choose a tool that runs a SAST or CodeQL analysis and feeds findings into an investigation workflow.
  • Adding remediation: Check whether it proposes a patch, validates the patch, and reruns analysis. “AI fix” alone does not establish that the fix is tested.
  • Securing the agent supply chain: Use separate controls to inspect agent skills, MCP servers, dependencies, and permissions. These tools complement a code-remediation pipeline rather than replace it.

These categories can overlap. A system may run static analysis, fuzzing, or other checks while also relying on an agent framework. Compare the actual loop and execution permissions, not just the label “AI security agent.”

Which open-source hybrid tools are closest to a remediation agent?

Hybrids are the most direct candidates when the goal is to connect vulnerability findings to patches and verification. The projects in the comparison take different approaches to scope, language coverage, local-model support, and whether code is executed.

Project Detection and workflow described Remediation or verification Coverage and execution notes
Raptor Combines Semgrep and CodeQL with fuzzing, exploit-feasibility analysis, and software-composition analysis. Includes patching in its pipeline. Community MIT project built on Claude Code. Fuzzing is part of the described workflow; assess its execution isolation before use.
Deepsec Uses a regex prefilter followed by AI investigation, with a web and application-stack focus. Includes revalidation after investigation. Vercel Labs project under the Apache license. The available data does not establish a language-count claim.
ai-deep-sast Uses Semgrep findings for AI triage across more than 30 languages. Described as a fast SAST scanner; a patch-generation and revalidation loop is not established in the available project notes. Cisco project under the Apache license. It can use a fully local model.
VVAH Described as an 11-stage pipeline for 42 languages, including threat modeling and adversarial verification. Proposes and validates fixes. Visa project under the Apache license. The project description says it does not execute code.

Raptor: broad analysis with patching

Raptor is the broadest workflow described among these four: it brings Semgrep and CodeQL findings together with fuzzing, exploit-feasibility analysis, software-composition analysis, and patching. That breadth can be useful when a team wants more than a static finding list, but it also makes the execution model important. Fuzzing can involve running code; confirm how the project isolates that work, what files and network access the agent receives, and whether proposed changes are reviewable before they are applied.

Raptor is built on Claude Code and is described as a community MIT project. Those facts matter operationally: it is an agent-based pipeline rather than a standalone SAST binary, and its behavior may depend on the underlying agent environment and model configuration. Do not infer that every stage is fully local or that the MIT license covers any external model or service used alongside it.

Deepsec: a focused investigation and revalidation loop

Deepsec, from Vercel Labs and licensed under Apache, is described as using a regex prefilter before AI investigation, then revalidating results. This architecture can reduce the number of items sent into a more expensive or variable reasoning stage, while revalidation gives teams a way to check whether the investigated issue persists. The available description focuses on web and application stacks; it does not supply a language count or establish coverage for every repository type.

For evaluation, look at the actual output for a known vulnerable test case: does it identify the relevant source and sink, explain why the finding matters, propose a bounded patch, and demonstrate that the original issue is no longer detected? A prefilter can improve efficiency, but it can also miss issues outside its patterns; treat its role as a front-end filter, not proof of completeness.

ai-deep-sast: local-model triage over Semgrep findings

Cisco’s ai-deep-sast is described as a fast scanner that uses a local model as an option to triage Semgrep findings across more than 30 languages. Its differentiator is the option to keep model inference local, which may be useful where source-code privacy or control over model calls is a priority. Local inference does not by itself establish that data never leaves the environment: check the scanner’s configuration, telemetry, dependencies, and any other services in the pipeline.

The available notes establish triage, not a complete automatic patch-and-verify loop. If the requirement is code remediation rather than prioritization, test whether the deployment you choose can generate a patch and how you will verify it—such as rerunning the relevant rules and reviewing tests—before treating it as a fix agent.

VVAH: broad language coverage with no code execution

Visa’s VVAH is described as an 11-stage pipeline for 42 languages that threat-models, adversarially verifies findings, and proposes and validates fixes without executing code. That makes its stated execution boundary distinct from a pipeline that uses fuzzing. For teams that do not want an analysis agent to run repository code, this is a particularly relevant design claim to verify against the implementation and configuration you deploy.

“Validates fixes” should still be read narrowly: it does not necessarily mean a patch passes your full test suite, meets your security policy, or is safe to merge without review. Establish what validation means in your workflow and what evidence the tool returns for each proposed change.

How should you compare the three approaches?

Choose by the job you need done and the risk you are prepared to manage. Static-analysis hybrids anchor work in findings; skills extend an agent that your team already uses; exploit-generation approaches seek evidence of runtime behavior. A capability claim in a repository description is not the same as an independent accuracy benchmark.

Approach Best fit What to verify
SAST-plus-LLM hybrid Teams that want findings from deterministic analysis to guide AI triage and, in some tools, patching and revalidation. Rules and language coverage, false-positive handling, patch validation, local versus hosted model use, and any code execution or network access.
Security skill pack Teams already working in an agent environment that want a repeatable security-audit workflow. Skill provenance, instructions and tool permissions, phase boundaries, and how a human reviews changes.
LLM-led exploit generation Teams investigating whether a suspected issue can produce a crashing or otherwise exploitable behavior. Sandboxing, reproducibility, target scope, resource limits, and whether the outcome translates into a verified source fix.

Exploit generation and remediation are related but not interchangeable. A crashing oracle can provide evidence that a defect is reachable under a particular test, but the existence of a crash does not itself produce a safe patch. Conversely, static analysis can identify a suspicious code path without proving that an attacker can reach it. Hybrids aim to connect these forms of evidence, but their value depends on the quality of each stage.

Can security skills turn an existing coding agent into an auditor?

Yes. Skill packs add security-specific procedures to an existing agent rather than providing a separate scanner. They can be easier to adopt for a team already using a supported agent, but they inherit that agent’s access, model behavior, and execution environment. A skill is instructions and tooling—not an independent guarantee that the underlying agent will find every vulnerability or apply safe changes.

Cloudflare security-audit-skill

Cloudflare’s MIT-licensed security-audit-skill is described as a six-phase, multi-agent audit with adversarial validation. The phased structure and adversarial check are useful workflow ideas: separate discovery from review, and ask for evidence that challenges an initial finding rather than accepting the first explanation. The available notes do not provide an independent benchmark or establish a universal remediation success rate.

Trail of Bits security plugins

Trail of Bits offers approximately 40 security-consulting plugins under a CC-BY-SA license. This is a collection rather than one monolithic scanner, so selection and configuration matter. Review each plugin’s instructions and tools individually, and confirm that the license and any attribution or share-alike obligations fit your organization’s intended use.

Capital One vulnhunter

Capital One’s Apache-licensed vulnhunter composes separate find, fix, and verify skills. That division maps cleanly to a remediation process: identification, proposed change, and a distinct verification step. Treat the stages as separable checkpoints; do not let a successful “find” step imply that the “fix” or “verify” stages have run.

Google mantis

Google’s Apache-licensed mantis offers roughly 15 security-focused skills and is intended as a starting point. A starter collection can be adapted to a team’s workflow, but adaptation introduces responsibility for testing the instructions, permissions, and outputs that result. The available description does not establish that the skills are a complete security audit or a drop-in patch pipeline.

What tools help secure the agent and MCP supply chain?

Code remediation tools do not answer whether the agent’s extensions and connections are safe. Cisco AI Defense describes an open-source set of scanners and tools for AI agents, MCP servers, LLM applications, and the AI supply chain. Its catalog includes Skill Scanner for agent skills, MCP Scanner for MCP servers, AI BOM for component inventory, and IDE AI Security Scanner with CodeGuard for secure AI-generated code. It also lists A2A Scanner, SecureBERT 2, Pickle Fuzzer, Adversarial Hubness Detector, and DefenseClaw.

These are adjacent controls, not interchangeable names for a source-code remediation agent. A skill scanner addresses risks in skills; an MCP scanner addresses MCP servers; an AI bill of materials (AI BOM) supports inventory. A code scanner or CodeGuard may help assess generated code. Map each tool to a specific asset and control rather than assuming the catalog provides one end-to-end fix loop.

How can you evaluate a tool without trusting its claims blindly?

Use a small, controlled evaluation that checks both security outcomes and the permissions required to get them. Repository descriptions can help identify intended capabilities, but the Mythos Agent README’s broad claims—variant analysis, AI-guided fuzzing, software-composition analysis, infrastructure-as-code analysis, DAST, and AI auto-fix—are repository claims, not independent evidence of accuracy. The same distinction applies to other project capability descriptions unless independently validated results are available.

  1. Define the intended replacement. Write down whether you need SAST triage, patch generation, patch verification, a security audit skill, or supply-chain scanning. A tool that solves one of these needs may not solve the others.
  2. Choose representative test cases. Use code your team is authorized to test, including known findings and benign examples. Record what should be found, what should not be reported, and what a satisfactory fix would change.
  3. Run read-only first. Start with the narrowest access that still permits useful analysis. If a tool needs to edit files, allow changes in a disposable branch or isolated worktree and review the diff before accepting it.
  4. Measure the full loop. Track whether the tool identifies the right code, explains the risk, proposes a minimal patch, and provides a meaningful verification result. A generated patch that has not been rechecked is a suggestion, not a verified remediation.
  5. Test failure cases. Include an issue the analyzer should detect, a pattern that resembles a vulnerability but is safe in context, and a case where a plausible fix would break expected behavior. Inspect skipped files and incomplete runs as well as successful outputs.
  6. Repeat after configuration changes. Model choice, analyzer rules, skill versions, and permissions can change the behavior. Record versions and settings so a later run can be compared meaningfully.

Compare tools on the same repository snapshot and with the same acceptance criteria. Count validated findings and useful fixes separately from raw alerts or generated patches. If a project does not provide reproducible benchmark results, report your own evaluation as internal evidence rather than presenting it as a general performance claim.

What security controls should be in place before production use?

OWASP’s checklist treats agent skills as supply-chain components that need scrutiny before deployment. Its motivation includes the ClawHavoc campaign: the checklist states that 1,184 malicious skills were involved and that five of the seven most-downloaded ClawHub skills at the infection peak were confirmed malware. Those figures are specific to that campaign, but the lesson is broader: popularity alone does not establish safety.

  • Check provenance: establish who published the skill or scanner, where it came from, and whether the source matches the claimed project.
  • Analyze behavior: inspect what its instructions and code do, especially file operations, shell commands, data handling, and outbound connections.
  • Verify signatures and immutable hashes: pin the exact artifact so an update cannot silently change what your team approved.
  • Generate an SBOM: inventory the software components and dependencies used by the agent workflow.
  • Scope permissions: give the tool only the repository, commands, credentials, and write access it needs for the task.
  • Use network allowlists and credential isolation: restrict destinations and avoid exposing production secrets to an analysis agent.
  • Test in an isolated canary environment: OWASP specifically asks whether a skill has been tested in an isolated canary environment before production deployment.
  • Review and revalidate every patch: rerun relevant analysis and tests, inspect the diff, and require normal code-review approval before merge.

These controls apply whether you install one skill or adopt a multi-stage remediation pipeline. They reduce the blast radius of a compromised extension or mistaken agent action; they do not establish that a vulnerability fix is correct.

Which option should you choose?

For a direct open-source path from findings toward fixes, evaluate a hybrid first. Raptor is the broadest described pipeline, with Semgrep, CodeQL, fuzzing, composition analysis, exploit-feasibility work, and patching. Deepsec emphasizes a prefilter, AI investigation, and revalidation for web and application stacks. ai-deep-sast is notable when local-model triage over Semgrep findings is the priority. VVAH is notable for its stated breadth across 42 languages and its design that proposes and validates fixes without executing code.

If your team already relies on a coding agent and wants security behavior inside that workflow, compare the skill-pack options, then govern them as executable supply-chain components. If your concern is whether those skills, MCP servers, or generated code are safe, add the relevant supply-chain scanner rather than expecting the remediation tool to cover that risk.

No option should be treated as equivalent to a hosted product solely because it uses AI or advertises automated fixes. Select by the required detection basis, patch-and-revalidation loop, execution boundary, deployment and privacy needs, language coverage, and the evidence available for the exact version you intend to run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these tools scan a private repository without sending code to a hosted model?

The ai-deep-sast project is described as offering a fully local model option, but local inference alone does not prove that every component is offline. Check network behavior, telemetry, dependencies, and configuration in your deployment before putting private source code through it.

Does an AI-generated security patch need a human review?

Yes. A model can misunderstand intended behavior or fix a symptom while leaving the underlying issue. Keep patches in a reviewable diff and run the project’s normal tests and security checks before merging.

Are open-source security skills safe to install because their code is public?

No. Public source improves the possibility of inspection, but users still need to verify provenance, inspect behavior, pin the approved artifact, and limit permissions. Malicious or compromised instructions can still create risk when an agent has access to files, credentials, or network resources.

What is the difference between an MCP scanner and a code vulnerability scanner?

An MCP scanner is aimed at MCP servers and their integration risks, while a code vulnerability scanner analyzes application source or generated code. They protect different parts of an agent-enabled development environment and may be used together.
