To preserve online-harassment evidence, get safe first, capture material that may disappear, keep the original files and surrounding context, record post and profile links with times, and store copies somewhere the harasser cannot access. Do not delay an emergency call or put yourself at risk to make a perfect record. A screenshot is useful documentation, but it does not guarantee that a post will remain available or that a court will admit it.
What should I do first?
Start with immediate safety, then preserve the material most likely to vanish. You do not need a complete evidence file before asking for help.

- Consider whether your device is safe. If an abusive person may monitor your usual phone, computer, accounts, or cloud storage, use a safer device if available. A capture or recording may notify the other person in some apps; app behavior changes, so do not assume a screenshot is invisible. If an alert could increase danger, consider photographing the screen with a second, safer device only if doing so is safe and permitted.
- Identify what may disappear first. Prioritize a disappearing message, a live post, or material on an account you may soon need to block. eSafety advises preserving evidence before blocking when safe, because evidence may become unavailable afterward. Its guidance is from Australia, not a statement of U.S. law: eSafety’s evidence-collection guidance.
- Capture before reporting or deleting, when safe. A platform report may lead to content being removed, and deleting a message or account can remove your access to it. If the material is threatening, seek help promptly while preserving what you safely can.
“Think about your safety first,” advises the National Network to End Domestic Violence Safety Net Project. If documenting could expose you to more abuse, stop and seek help from a trusted person or an appropriate support organization rather than taking a risk for the sake of a record.
How do I take a useful screenshot?
Capture enough of the screen to show what happened and where it happened. A single cropped line can lose the context that helps someone understand the exchange.

Include the message, account, and surrounding context
- Capture the harmful post or message together with nearby messages or thread content, where possible.
- Separately capture the profile or account page, including the username as displayed and other identifying information visible on screen.
- Include visible dates or times. If the exchange is long, take successive screenshots with overlapping content so the order is easier to follow.
- Do not omit your own messages or other relevant context from the only copy. If you need to highlight, annotate, or redact information for sharing, make a duplicate and leave the original untouched.
Keep the original file
Save the original screenshot or photograph without cropping, markup, or other edits. Store an annotated or redacted copy separately, and label it as a working copy. Keep the original messages, media, and files too when they are safe and lawful for you to possess. A screenshot is a record of what appeared on a screen; it is not the same thing as the original message or media.
Take care with sexual images involving minors
Do not make or distribute copies of sexual images involving minors. eSafety specifically warns against saving this material. Seek guidance from an appropriate authority or qualified professional about how to report it without creating or sharing additional copies.
What else should I save besides screenshots?
Save the information that helps someone locate, identify, and understand the material. A screenshot and a direct link serve different purposes: a link can identify the post, but it cannot preserve content that is later deleted.
- Direct post or comment URL: Use the post’s share or link option if available, then copy the address. In an app, the share menu may offer a copy-link option.
- Profile URL and displayed username: Record both. Usernames can change, and a profile link alone may not identify the specific post.
- Time details: Note the time shown by the service and when you observed the material. Record your device’s time zone if known; do not silently treat a displayed service time as your local time.
- Original communications: Keep original emails, messages, images, videos, or voicemail where safe and lawful. For email, retain the original message and full headers rather than relying only on a forwarded copy or screenshot.
- Conversation export: If the platform offers an export, save it as an additional record. An export may preserve ordering and messages that do not fit on screen, but it is not a reason to wait before capturing material at risk of disappearing.
- Report reference: After making a safe capture, save the platform’s report confirmation or reference number.
When sending a record to someone else, consider whether it contains private details about you or other people. Share only what is needed, and use a safe channel and account.

How should I organize an incident log?
A short, consistent log makes separate captures easier to understand later. Use one row or entry per incident, and distinguish what the service displayed from what you observed.

Keep the log factual. Record exact wording when it matters, but distinguish a quotation from your description. Avoid repeatedly reopening distressing material just to improve the log; you can add details later if needed.

Keep evidence somewhere you control and do not rely only on the service where the abuse occurred. A separate folder and, if feasible, another secure copy can reduce the chance that one lost account or device takes the record with it.
- Choose a device, account, or storage location the harasser cannot access. A shared device, shared cloud account, or account with a known password may not be safe.
- Use clear filenames and preserve the originals. Keep annotated, cropped, or redacted versions separate.
- Consider a second secure copy if you can make one safely. An external hard drive is one option; use storage you already have if appropriate, and keep it inaccessible to the harasser. Having a drive does not authenticate a screenshot.
- Think about traces left by storage and printing. A shared printer may keep activity records, and a shared account may expose files or notifications.

Should I use a screenshot, export, printout, or web archive?
There is no single best method for every situation. Capture quickly with a screenshot when a post may disappear, and add other methods when they provide context or a safer backup.

For sensitive material, privacy and safety can matter more than creating additional copies. A public archive is not a default choice for private messages, identifying details, or other sensitive content. Optional methods are not prerequisites to reporting or seeking help.
When should I report the harassment?
Once you have made safe captures of material that may disappear, use the relevant platform’s reporting process if appropriate and keep the reference number. Do not let documentation delay help for a threat or immediate danger.
For an electronic threat, the FBI advises preserving electronic evidence and notifying law enforcement. Its guidance says, “Preserve all electronic evidence.” The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) does not accept evidence attachments, according to its FAQ; keep original material securely rather than assuming a complaint form is an evidence repository. An investigator may later ask you for retained originals.

In the United States, the legal meaning of a threat, available remedies, and evidence rules depend on the facts and jurisdiction. A screenshot is not automatically admissible, and documenting a post does not guarantee that a platform will preserve or restore it.
