If an online game will not connect, check the game publisher’s official service status before changing anything on your router. A confirmed outage or maintenance window means the remote service needs to recover; restarting your modem cannot repair it. If the game’s status is normal, compare the platform, other games and services, other devices, and Wi-Fi versus Ethernet. Those comparisons narrow the fault to the publisher, platform, game installation, device, home network, or internet provider without guessing.
This guide follows that order and explains what each result means, which fixes are safe to try first, and when to contact the publisher or your ISP.

Check the game’s official status page first. Look for an outage, scheduled maintenance, degraded performance, authentication incident, or a notice limited to your region, platform, mode, or other feature. EA’s status page, for example, lists its games and platform servers, while Steam Support tells players to check Steam’s server status before troubleshooting a local setup.
A status page is a current snapshot, not a guarantee that every player can connect. A service may be marked online while a regional data center, login system, matchmaking queue, or particular platform is failing. Recheck the page if the symptom changes, and read the incident details rather than relying only on a green “online” label.

What a confirmed outage means
A publisher-reported outage or maintenance window is strong evidence of a service-side problem. Wait for the provider’s update instead of repeatedly resetting your router, changing DNS, or forwarding ports. Those actions affect your local path and cannot restore a remote server that is offline.
EA Help describes a server issue as something that “usually affects many players at the same time.” That is a useful clue, but it is not a mathematical test: a regional or platform-specific incident can affect fewer people, and a local network fault can happen at the same time as an unrelated outage.

Could the platform or internet provider be the problem?
Online games often depend on more than the publisher’s game servers. Console network services, PC launchers, identity systems, payment or account services, and your ISP can each block a connection. Check the platform named by the game’s support page as well as the game status page.
Epic Games advises console players to check its own status page and their ISP for local outages or degradation. EA’s connection guidance likewise directs players to check the relevant platform service. If a platform incident is reported, the game may fail even when the publisher’s game status appears normal.
Check the ISP without assuming a speed problem
Look for an outage or degradation notice in your ISP’s account or support channels. If several people in the home lose unrelated online services, ask the ISP whether there is a neighborhood incident or a problem on your line. A normal web page or a single speed test does not prove that the route to a particular game is healthy.

How can I tell whether the failure is shared or local?
Use four evidence axes: scope, reach, connection path, and timing. They are practical comparisons drawn from official troubleshooting guidance, not a formal diagnostic standard.

| Evidence axis | What to compare | What the result suggests | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | One game versus several games or online services | One title failing points toward that game, its account, update, or route; several services failing raises the likelihood of a platform, router, or ISP issue | Different games can use different servers and routes, so one working title does not prove every service is reachable |
| Reach | One device versus multiple devices on the same home network | One device suggests a local setting, files, firewall, or account; multiple devices suggest the shared network or provider | A device can have a separate fault even when another device works |
| Connection path | Wi-Fi versus a direct Ethernet connection | Wi-Fi failure with Ethernet success makes wireless interference, signal strength, or the access point more plausible | Ethernet will not fix a publisher outage, platform incident, or ISP-side fault |
| Timing | Constant failure versus problems at recurring hours | Recurring periods can point to congestion or traffic-management concerns; a continuous failure needs broader checks | Time correlation alone does not prove ISP shaping or congestion |
For example, if one game fails on one console while video streaming and another online game work, investigate the game, account, update, NAT, or route before replacing network hardware. If phones, computers, and consoles all lose unrelated services, investigate the router and ISP after checking for a wider incident.
What should I do when the status pages look normal?
Work from reversible, low-risk checks toward narrower causes. Complete each step before changing another variable so you know which result was meaningful.
- Confirm the exact service. Open the publisher’s status page for the game, then check the platform service used by your console or launcher. Read regional, platform, login, matchmaking, and maintenance notes.
- Record the error message. Copy the exact wording or code, note the game mode and platform, and write down when the failure began. “Cannot connect” and an authentication error can have very different causes.
- Close and relaunch the game. Quit it fully rather than leaving it suspended in the background. Sign in again if the title requests authentication.
- Install pending updates. Check the game, launcher, console or PC operating system, and required system software. A client that is behind the server’s version may fail before matchmaking begins.
- Test another online service. Open a different game or service on the same device, then test a second device on the same network. This separates a title-specific problem from a shared connection problem.
- Restart the device and network equipment. Reboot the console or computer. If other services are also failing, restart the router according to its normal procedure and wait for it to reconnect; do not factory-reset it as a first response.
- Try a direct wired connection. If practical, connect the console or computer directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same game test. Steam Support recommends this comparison to identify Wi-Fi or powerline interference, and EA also suggests trying a wired connection.
- Test at another time if the pattern repeats. If the game works in the morning but fails during a recurring evening window, record the times and ask the ISP whether congestion or traffic management is affecting the route. Steam advises testing at other hours when shaping is suspected.
- Escalate to the right support team. Use the publisher’s support channel for a one-game or one-account failure. Contact the ISP for simultaneous failures across devices or services, especially when a wired test does not help.
How should I interpret common test results?
No single result proves the cause. Treat each pattern as a way to choose the next check.
| Observed pattern | More plausible areas to investigate | Next useful action |
|---|---|---|
| The game’s status page reports an incident or maintenance | Publisher service, regional service, or a game feature | Wait for the incident update and recheck later; avoid unrelated router changes |
| The game is online, but the platform reports an incident | Console network, launcher, identity, or platform authentication | Follow the platform status update and test again after recovery |
| Only one game fails on one device | Game files, update state, account, firewall, NAT, or the route to that service | Use that game’s support steps and compare with another game on the same device |
| One device fails while other devices work | Device software, local firewall, account, or installation | Install updates, restart, check the exact error, and test the account or game on another supported device if available |
| Several devices and unrelated services fail on Wi-Fi | Router, wireless interference, broadband line, or ISP outage | Check the ISP, restart the router normally, and compare with Ethernet |
| Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet works | Wireless signal, interference, access-point placement, or powerline equipment | Use the wired connection temporarily and improve the wireless segment rather than changing game settings first |
| Failures recur at similar hours | Congestion or possible ISP traffic management | Keep a time log, test at other hours, and give the ISP those details |
| Status pages show “online,” but the game still fails | A localized, account, device, network-path, NAT, or firewall issue | Continue through the device, alternate-service, Ethernet, and ISP checks |
Why is Ethernet a useful test, and what does it not prove?
A direct Ethernet connection removes the Wi-Fi link from the test. If the same console or computer connects reliably over Ethernet, investigate signal strength, interference, access-point placement, channel conditions, or powerline adapters. Leave the game and all other settings unchanged while making the comparison.

You do not need to buy equipment for a test if you already have a suitable cable. If you need one, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic aid for connecting a console or PC to the router. It is not a universal fix: it cannot repair a game outage, a platform incident, or an ISP fault, and it may be impractical when the router is far away.
If Ethernet produces the same error, the wireless segment is less likely to be the primary cause, but the test does not eliminate the router, ISP, platform, or game service. Keep the result with your support notes.
When do NAT, firewall, or router settings matter?
NAT behavior, firewall restrictions, and router configuration can prevent matchmaking, voice chat, or inbound peer connections even when ordinary websites load. Rockstar’s GTA Online guidance, for example, lists NAT and router or firewall restrictions as potential factors and asks players to check service status first.
Do not treat port forwarding, custom DNS, or a factory reset as universal first steps. Network requirements differ by game, platform, router, and firmware. Use the current instructions for the affected title and platform, change one setting at a time, record the original value, and undo a change that does not help. A support agent can interpret the exact error and NAT state more safely than a generic port list copied from another game.
What should I send to game or ISP support?

Resetting the router during a confirmed outage
Repeated resets create downtime in your home without changing a remote incident. Check the publisher and platform notices first, then wait for an update when an outage is acknowledged.
Using a speed test as the only evidence
Speed, latency, and throughput to a test server do not reproduce the game’s authentication, matchmaking, or data route. A good result can coexist with a blocked or failing path to one game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing several settings at once
Changing DNS, NAT, firewall rules, firmware, and Wi-Fi channels together makes the outcome impossible to attribute and can introduce new problems. Prefer one reversible change followed by the same repeatable game test.
Assuming one working device clears the whole network
Different devices can use different wireless bands, software versions, accounts, or routes. A working phone proves only that that phone reached its tested services at that moment.

Assuming an “online” badge clears the provider
Status systems can lag behind a new incident or omit a narrow regional problem. Continue with scope and reach comparisons when symptoms persist, and check the page again after a short interval.
What is the fastest decision path?
Use this compact sequence when you need an answer before a longer investigation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check the game’s official status for outage, maintenance, region, platform, and feature notices.
- Check the platform service and your ISP for incidents.
- Compare the failing game with another online service on the same device.
- Compare that device with another device on the same home network.
- Restart the game and device, install updates, and repeat the test.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if possible.
- Send the recorded pattern and error to the publisher or ISP that controls the failing layer.
This order prevents local tinkering from obscuring a service outage while still catching device, Wi-Fi, router, NAT, and provider faults when the public status pages are clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a speed test tell me whether the game servers are down?
No. A speed test measures a separate test destination and does not exercise the game’s login, matchmaking, or session route. Use it only as additional context after checking the publisher and platform status.
Should I change DNS settings when one game will not connect?
Not as a first step. DNS changes may affect name resolution but cannot restore an offline publisher or platform, and game-specific guidance differs. Record the original setting and follow the affected title’s current support instructions before experimenting.
Why does the game work on mobile data but not my home broadband?
That comparison points toward the home router, Wi-Fi segment, ISP, or route used by the broadband connection, while leaving the game and account less likely to be the sole cause. Check for an ISP incident and repeat the test over Ethernet before changing game files.
How long should I wait after a reported maintenance window?
Use the publisher’s incident updates rather than a fixed universal time. Services can return in stages, so retry when the notice changes and verify that your specific region, platform, and game mode are included.
What if support asks for my NAT type?
Provide the label exactly as shown on your console or router and identify the game and platform. NAT terminology and acceptable states vary, so do not apply port-forwarding instructions from a different title without confirming they match your equipment and service.
