Goldman Sachs is putting artificial intelligence at the center of its small-business outreach. The bank announced a Small Business AI Institute as part of a $500 million expansion of its 10,000 Small Businesses program in 2026. The institute is designed to teach entrepreneurs how to select, test and apply AI, with Google, Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta named as training and technology partners. It is an adoption and education bet rather than a promise of a particular app, discount or automated workforce. Early evidence from Goldman’s own alumni survey shows a wide gap between experimentation and deep integration: 86% of surveyed graduates used AI, but only 15% said it was fully integrated into core operations.
What is Goldman Sachs’s Small Business AI Institute?
The institute is a new AI-learning component of Goldman Sachs’s 10,000 Small Businesses initiative. Goldman says the broader program is receiving a $500 million expansion in 2026, with the institute intended to help entrepreneurs understand practical uses of AI and apply them in their companies. The announcement names Google, Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta as partners for training and tools, but does not specify a single curriculum, software bundle, subscription tier or guaranteed business outcome.

The context is unusually broad. NBC News reported that more than 90% of U.S. companies are small businesses, making owners a large potential audience for basic AI education. Goldman is using an established business-training network to reach that audience instead of presenting AI only as an enterprise technology.
Why is Goldman Sachs making this AI bet now?
The move connects a philanthropic and educational program to Goldman’s larger position in technology finance. The article reporting the announcement says Goldman’s share price had approximately tripled over the previous three years, that the bank helped lead SpaceX’s record-breaking initial public offering, and that it was reportedly working on Anthropic’s IPO. Those are contextual claims attributed to that report, not promises made by the institute.

Goldman CEO David Solomon framed adoption as a competitive necessity: “You’ve got to embrace new technology always, because if you’re not embracing it, trying to figure out how it can make your businesses better, there’s a real chance that you can fall behind.” The institute gives that argument a Main Street outlet, where owners often lack dedicated technical staff and need help identifying useful, manageable applications.
How many small-business owners are actually using AI?
Goldman’s 2026 survey of more than 2,400 graduates of its 10,000 Small Businesses program shows that use is common among that alumni population, while full operational integration is still unusual.

These percentages should not be read as a census of all U.S. small businesses. They describe people who completed Goldman’s program, a group likely to be more engaged with business education than the overall market. The 30-point increase in reported use from 2024 to 2026 nevertheless indicates faster experimentation, while the 15% integration figure shows that adoption still often stops at individual tasks or pilots.
What can a small business use AI for?
The examples associated with the institute point to support work rather than unattended decision-making. Common areas include marketing drafts, business planning, management tasks and process documentation.

Owners can use a model to outline campaigns, adapt a message for different channels, summarize customer feedback or create a first draft for human editing. The value is speed and iteration; the owner remains responsible for accuracy, tone and claims.
Planning and management
AI can organize meeting notes, turn goals into project checklists, compare scenarios and prepare questions for professional advisers. It can reduce preparation time without becoming the company’s accountant, lawyer or final decision-maker.
Process support
Businesses may use AI to document recurring procedures, classify incoming requests or draft internal instructions. Before deployment, an owner should test edge cases and decide who reviews outputs that affect customers, employees or money.
Human augmentation in practice
Rechelle Balanzat, founder of Juliette, said, “I really treat my AI as my consigliere.” She added that AI is not there to replace her accountant or lawyer, but helps her prepare more meaningful questions for those professionals. Mike DiMarino of Linda Tool similarly said, “I’m sure there’s a lot more it can do that I don’t know yet.” His observation captures the institute’s educational premise: discovering useful workflows is itself part of the work.

How can a small business use AI without replacing people?
A safe starting point is to assign AI narrow, reviewable jobs and keep accountability with a named employee or owner.
- Choose one low-risk task. Start with a draft, summary, checklist or internal brainstorm rather than an automatic customer, hiring or payment decision.
- Define the reviewer. Specify who checks facts, calculations, tone, bias and confidential details before anything leaves the business.
- Set data boundaries. Remove unnecessary personal, financial, health or proprietary information, and understand how the selected service stores and uses prompts.
- Measure a baseline. Record time spent, error rates, rework and customer impact before changing the process.
- Expand only after evidence. If the pilot improves a measurable outcome without creating unacceptable risk, document the workflow and train more staff.
DiMarino’s formulation is a useful operating principle: “Machines are expensive,” while “People are priceless.” AI can increase the leverage of a small team, but it does not remove the need for judgment, relationships or skilled review.

Is AI worth the cost and security risk for a small business?
There is no universal yes or no. The business case depends on whether a defined task improves enough to offset subscription fees, usage-based compute or token charges, integration work, training and the cost of correcting mistakes. Goldman’s announcement does not publish partner pricing or a return-on-investment guarantee.
Security is a central constraint, not a footnote. The NBC News report describing the story cited an incident involving about 700 AI agents at Hugging Face; the accessible account did not include the underlying technical report. Owners should therefore treat agentic systems, connected accounts and automated tool use as higher-risk than a standalone drafting assistant.

Regulation and public trust are also unsettled. An NBC News poll reported that 79% of respondents believed the government was not doing enough to regulate AI, while 67% disapproved of President Donald Trump’s handling of AI. Those figures are attributed to that poll report; its methodology is not supplied here, so they should be read as a snapshot of opinion rather than a technical assessment.

Compare the pilot with the old process using a fixed period and the same workload. Track completion time, correction hours, error or complaint rates and any effect on revenue or employee capacity, then keep the workflow only if the measured benefit exceeds its total operating cost.
