Verdict: The On Cloudsurfer 2 is a neutral road trainer best suited to short and medium easy runs. Its CloudTec Phase midsole and rocker create the smooth, rolling transition On is aiming for, but independent reviews disagree about the cushioning: some find it comfortable for relaxed running, while RTINGS reports a firm, relatively unresponsive ride with limited forefoot protection. It is not marketed as a race shoe, and the reported September 15, 2026 launch of the Cloudsurfer 3 makes the Cloudsurfer 2 a previous-generation purchase. The listed US$160 is the launch price, not a confirmed current price.
What is the On Cloudsurfer 2?
The Cloudsurfer 2 is On’s neutral everyday road trainer for short-to-mid-distance running. On’s SS25 technical sheet, dated February 13, 2025, lists the same date as the shoe’s launch and positions it for routine training rather than racing. The design centers on CloudTec Phase cushioning, a rocker-shaped geometry and an engineered-mesh upper.

Unlike some of On’s running shoes, the Cloudsurfer 2 has no Speedboard. The midsole’s CloudTec Phase elements are arranged to compress in sequence, while the revised outsole geometry is computer-optimized to support the transition and, according to On, improve durability. That durability statement is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent wear test.
On describes the goal in its product sheet as: “Cloudtec Phase is now paired with a new computer optimised outsole to fully support the smoothest ride, increasing durability and offer the ultimate cushioned running sensation.” The wording is promotional copy, so treat it as an explanation of the design intent, not proof that every runner will experience the shoe as maximally cushioned.

Is the Cloudsurfer 2 good for everyday running?
It can be a good choice for easy daily mileage if you prefer a guided, rolling transition over a highly springy or plush ride. The strongest agreement among reviews is that the rocker helps the shoe move smoothly from heel to toe. The main disagreement is how the foam feels once the CloudTec elements compress: The Run Testers found a comfortable easy-run ride, while RTINGS and other reviewers describe a firmer feel with limited energy return.
Where it works best
- Easy road runs at relaxed paces.
- Short-to-medium daily training where a smooth transition matters more than maximum bounce.
- Runners who want a neutral platform rather than a stability shoe.
Where it is less convincing
- Racing or fast sessions that depend on pronounced propulsion.
- High-impact running when you want substantial forefoot cushioning.
- Long runs if you prefer a notably soft, protective and energetic ride.
These are use-case conclusions from the manufacturer’s positioning and published reviews, not a promise about injury prevention or treatment. No running shoe should be presented as preventing or curing an injury.
How does the Cloudsurfer 2 ride?
The Cloudsurfer 2’s most consistent characteristic is its rolling heel-to-toe motion. The rocker and CloudTec Phase geometry encourage the foot forward without the abrupt, aggressive sensation of a dedicated speed shoe. Comfort and softness are less consistent across reviewers, so your reaction will depend on your preferred cushioning and running pace.
Firmness and cushioning
RTINGS characterizes its tested pair as firm after the Cloud elements compress, with limited energy return and reduced protection under higher forefoot impact. Believe in the Run also describes the Cloudsurfer 2 as firmer than the preceding version. In contrast, The Run Testers call it comfortable for easy running. These accounts can all be accurate because “comfortable” is a personal response, while RTINGS’ observations come from its own test bench and sample.
Responsiveness
The shoe is not built around a dramatic trampoline effect. RTINGS reports limited responsiveness, and the available reviews do not establish a measured rebound value. If you want an obvious push into faster paces, compare shoes designed specifically for tempo work or racing rather than assuming the Cloudsurfer 2’s rocker provides the same result.
Ground feel and protection
RTINGS reports less forefoot protection when impact rises. That matters most for runners who land heavily at the front of the shoe, run fast, or spend a long time on hard pavement. The Cloudsurfer 2 may feel more suitable when the pace and distance keep loading moderate.

What are the Cloudsurfer 2’s specifications?
On’s figures below are the official product-sheet specifications. Weight is tied to a specific size, and stack measurements are the brand’s listed values.
| Specification | On-listed value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Men’s weight | 260 g | Men’s EU 42 |
| Women’s weight | 230 g | Women’s EU 38.5 |
| Heel stack | 32 mm | Manufacturer figure |
| Toe stack | 23 mm | Manufacturer figure |
| Drop | 9 mm | Manufacturer figure |
| Men’s listed sizes | US 7–14 | Official range in the technical sheet |
| Women’s listed sizes | US 5–11 | Official range in the technical sheet |
| Launch price | US$160 | Launch-era figure; not a verified October 2026 price |
| Other launch prices | €170; £150; CHF220 | Currency figures listed by On |
Why do measured specifications differ from On’s numbers?
Independent measurements vary because reviewers may use a different shoe size, measurement method, sample or test-bench procedure. Do not merge the numbers into one supposedly universal specification.
| Source and date | Measured weight | Measured heel stack | Measured drop | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTINGS, review updated October 24, 2025; test bench updated September 15, 2026 | 252.9 g | 35.8 mm | 8.6 mm | RTINGS’ tested sample and methodology; the page notes possible inconsistencies after its methodology update |
| RunRepeat, June 2025 | Not stated | Not stated | 10.4 mm | Independent measurement that differs from On’s 9 mm listing |
The official 260 g men’s figure and RTINGS’ 252.9 g result are not a contradiction by themselves. A small size change, scale setup or sample difference can change the result. The same caution applies to the 8.6 mm, 9 mm and 10.4 mm drop figures; use the source and method attached to each number when comparing shoes.
How does the upper and fit feel?
On uses a lightweight engineered-mesh upper and a refined tongue. The Run Testers found the shoe comfortable in their usual size, but noted that the toe box may not feel roomy to every runner. That makes forefoot shape and personal width preference important when selecting a size.

A comfortable fit for one foot can feel restrictive for another, especially when toes spread during longer runs. RTINGS said a wide version was not listed for the model at the time of its review. Because widths and regional inventory can change, check the current listing for your market rather than treating that historical observation as a permanent limitation.
Choosing a size
- Start with the size you normally use in On running shoes, since The Run Testers found their usual size comfortable.
- Check the listed men’s or women’s size range and whether your market offers a width option.
- Allow enough toe room for your normal running socks and swelling on longer outings; do not size down simply to make the upper feel snug.
- Use the retailer’s current return and exchange terms if your toe box or midfoot fit is uncertain.
How does it perform at different paces and distances?
Easy runs
Easy running is the Cloudsurfer 2’s clearest use case. The rocker keeps the transition fluid at relaxed speeds, and the shoe’s neutral setup avoids adding a formal stability element. This is where the more comfortable reviews are most relevant.

Tempo sessions
The shoe can handle occasional pace changes, but the published evidence does not show the strong energy return associated with a dedicated tempo trainer. RTINGS’ limited-responsiveness finding is a reason to avoid buying it primarily for fast workouts.
Long runs
The Cloudsurfer 2 is not ruled out for long runs, but forefoot protection and firmness become more consequential as impact accumulates. Tom’s Guide’s June 2025 comparison reported that Cloudmonster 2 held up better for longer runs in that author’s experience, while the Cloudsurfer 2 felt smoother and lighter for easy running. That is one reviewer’s roughly 40-mile experience in each shoe, not a controlled universal ranking.
Racing
On presents the Cloudsurfer 2 as an everyday trainer, not a race shoe. RTINGS likewise considers it more suitable for shorter daily runs than marathon racing. If race-day efficiency is the priority, use the Cloudsurfer 2 only if its firm, rolling feel matches your own testing rather than assuming the rocker makes it a racer.
How does the Cloudsurfer 2 compare with the Cloudmonster 2?
The most useful distinction in the available head-to-head report is ride character, not a complete specification comparison. Tom’s Guide’s writer ran about 40 miles in each model and preferred the Cloudsurfer 2 for smooth, lighter-feeling easy miles, while finding the Cloudmonster 2 more responsive and better for longer runs.
| Use or characteristic | Cloudsurfer 2 | Cloudmonster 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Easy running | Smoother and lighter in Tom’s Guide’s experience | Less smooth than Cloudsurfer 2 in that comparison |
| Responsiveness | Cloudsurfer 2 felt less responsive in the comparison | More responsive in Tom’s Guide’s experience |
| Longer runs | Not the stronger option in that author’s report | Held up better for longer runs in that author’s report |
| Evidence scope | One reviewer’s approximately 40-mile experience in each shoe; not a controlled laboratory ranking | |
Choose between them based on the run you do most often: the Cloudsurfer 2’s smoother transition for easy work, or the Cloudmonster 2’s reported responsiveness and longer-run preference. The comparison does not establish that one model is universally better.
Is the outsole durable and grippy?
On says the revised, computer-optimized outsole geometry is intended to increase durability. That is the available manufacturer claim. The supplied independent reviews do not provide a standardized mileage test or a controlled grip benchmark, so there is no defensible universal lifespan or wet-grip score to quote.

Buyers should therefore separate design intent from proven wear: the outsole may be engineered for durability, but actual life depends on surface, weather, stride, body weight and mileage. Inspect the current pair and retailer policy if outsole wear is a deciding factor.
What changed from the previous Cloudsurfer?
Fleet Feet’s comparison characterizes the Cloudsurfer 2 as slightly heavier and somewhat firmer than the previous Cloudsurfer. Believe in the Run also reports a firmer feel. On’s product sheet identifies the revised CloudTec Phase midsole, new engineered mesh upper, refined tongue and revised outsole geometry as the defining construction details.
The change is therefore not simply “more cushioning.” It is a retuning of the midsole and outsole around a smooth transition, with a firmer response reported by some reviewers. Whether that is an upgrade depends on whether you prefer more structure and guidance or the softer feel of the earlier shoe.
How much does the Cloudsurfer 2 cost now?
On’s technical sheet lists US$160, €170, £150 and CHF220 as launch-era prices. Those figures should not be presented as current retail prices. As of October 2026, the reported Cloudsurfer 3 launch on September 15, 2026 makes the Cloudsurfer 2 a previous-generation model, so clearance pricing may exist, but price, inventory, colors and sizes require a live retailer check.

When you see a listing, confirm that it is specifically the Cloudsurfer 2 rather than the newer generation, then verify the size, width, return terms and final delivered price. A discount can make the Cloudsurfer 2 more attractive, but the older model’s firm ride and limited forefoot protection remain the same.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the Cloudsurfer 2’s main strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths
- Rolling heel-to-toe transition from the CloudTec Phase geometry and rocker.
- Neutral construction for everyday road training.
- Light official weights of 260 g in men’s EU 42 and 230 g in women’s EU 38.5.

- Wide availability was not listed for RTINGS’ tested model at the time of review; current regional stock must be checked.
- It is now a previous-generation shoe following the reported Cloudsurfer 3 launch.
Who should buy the On Cloudsurfer 2?
Buy it if you want a neutral daily trainer whose main personality is a smooth rocker-driven transition, you mostly run easily on roads, and you are comfortable with cushioning that may feel firm rather than plush. A current sale price can improve its value, provided the listing, size and generation are verified.

Look elsewhere if your priorities are a pronounced bounce, maximum forefoot protection, a very soft long-run platform, or a shoe built primarily for racing and fast training. The Cloudsurfer 2’s strengths are specific enough that choosing it for the wrong ride preference will be more noticeable than choosing it by weight or launch price alone.
How should you test the Cloudsurfer 2 after buying?
- Walk and jog briefly indoors or on a clean surface to check heel hold, midfoot pressure and toe-room before committing to outdoor mileage.
- Run an easy, short session first. Pay attention to whether the rocker feels natural and whether the forefoot feels adequately protected.
- Try a medium-length easy run at your normal pace. Note whether the firm feel remains comfortable as fatigue builds.
- Only then use it for longer outings or faster work, because those are the situations in which reviewers report the clearest limitations.
- Keep the receipt and follow the seller’s return window if the width, firmness or forefoot impact does not suit you.
This process cannot predict injury risk, but it can reveal a mismatch between your preferred ride and the Cloudsurfer 2’s firm, rolling design before the shoe becomes your main trainer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can two runners disagree so much about the Cloudsurfer 2’s softness?
Softness is a perception shaped by runner weight, pace, landing pattern and what the runner usually wears. The CloudTec Phase elements compress during use, so one person may focus on the smooth transition while another notices the firmer platform after compression. Published reviews are individual experiences, not a population-wide comfort result.
Will the Cloudsurfer 2 weigh exactly 260 grams in every men’s size?
No. On’s 260 g figure applies to men’s EU 42, while the 230 g figure applies to women’s EU 38.5. Larger or smaller sizes can weigh differently, and independent scales can produce another result, so treat the listed weights as size-specific reference points rather than a guarantee for your pair.
Why is the listed 9 mm drop different from some measured drops?
Brand specifications and independent measurements can use different reference points, tools and shoe sizes. RunRepeat measured 10.4 mm and RTINGS measured 8.6 mm in their respective reviews, so neither result should replace the source-labeled 9 mm figure for every size. The practical choice is to judge the shoe by fit and transition, not by a single number detached from its method.
What should I check when a discounted listing says Cloudsurfer 2?
Confirm the model name and photos identify the second generation, because the Cloudsurfer 3 was reported launched on September 15, 2026. Then verify your size, any available width, the final currency-adjusted price and the seller’s current stock and return conditions before ordering.
