Ollama’s cloud marker is a model identifier, not a sentence-level instruction that changes how a prompt is interpreted. It selects a hosted-model route: the model runs on Ollama’s infrastructure rather than on your computer. The spelling depends on the model and interface—current documentation shows gemma4:cloud in the app and CLI, while Ollama’s September 19, 2025 launch announcement used names such as qwen3-coder:480b-cloud. If you want Ollama to stay local, the documented controls are to set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 in the Ollama service environment or add {"disable_ollama_cloud": true} to ~/.ollama/server.json, then restart Ollama. Those settings also remove cloud models and web search.
What does Ollama’s cloud suffix actually do?
The cloud marker tells Ollama which execution path to use. A model name carrying a cloud designation points the request to a hosted model, so the prompt and response are processed by the cloud service instead of by a model running on your machine.

That is different from a natural-language instruction. Adding a suffix does not tell the model to “think in the cloud,” bypass a safety rule, or alter the wording of your prompt. It is part of the identifier Ollama uses to select a model endpoint.
Ollama’s current cloud documentation uses gemma4:cloud as an app and command-line example. The company’s September 19, 2025 announcement used names including qwen3-coder:480b-cloud. Treat those as interface- and date-specific examples, not proof that every model uses one universal suffix.

Why do some model names use :cloud while others use -cloud?
The punctuation is not uniform across Ollama’s naming examples. Current documentation presents a colon form for at least one app/CLI workflow, while the dated launch announcement used a hyphenated form in model names. The exact string can also differ between an app or CLI name and the name accepted by a direct API.
Current app and CLI examples
In the current cloud documentation, gemma4:cloud is the example users select or run from Ollama’s app and command-line tools. Use the spelling shown by the current model list for the interface you are using.

Ollama’s September 19, 2025 cloud-model announcement showed identifiers such as qwen3-coder:480b-cloud. That announcement is useful for understanding the earlier naming style, but it is not a guarantee that the same identifier remains available or is still the correct API name.
Why copying a name can fail
Model catalogs change. A model may be renamed, retired, or exposed under a different API identifier. For API calls, consult Ollama’s current model list rather than copying a historical blog example or assuming the app label is the exact string required by the API.
What is the difference between Ollama cloud and local models?
Cloud and local use differ mainly in where inference runs, what must be present on your computer, and which data path handles the request.
| Aspect | Cloud model | Local model |
|---|---|---|
| Where inference runs | On Ollama’s hosted cloud service | On the computer running Ollama |
| Model download | The hosted model does not need to be downloaded to your computer | The model must be available locally |
| Cloud account or API access | Uses Ollama’s cloud path through the supported app, CLI, or API workflow | Uses the local Ollama installation |
| Prompt and response path | Sent to the hosted service for processing | Processed by the local installation |
| Features when cloud is disabled | Unavailable | Local models remain the available route |
Ollama describes cloud models as hosted models that can be used from its app or CLI. A local model follows the opposite path: the work is performed by the Ollama installation on your device, subject to that machine’s available model files and hardware.
How do I disable Ollama cloud features?
Ollama documents two ways to force a local-only configuration. Set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 in the environment used by the Ollama service, or set disable_ollama_cloud to true in ~/.ollama/server.json. Whichever method you choose, restart Ollama so the service reads the new setting.

Method 1: set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1
- Identify how Ollama is started on your system: an operating-system service, a background process, or an application launch.
- Add the environment variable
OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1to that service’s environment. Setting it only in an unrelated terminal does not change an already-running Ollama service. - Stop and restart Ollama. The variable must be present when the service starts.
This method is useful when deployment configuration is managed through a service definition or another environment-based setup. Keep the value attached to the Ollama service rather than only to a one-off client process.
Method 2: edit server.json
- Open
~/.ollama/server.json. Create the file if your installation does not already have it. - Add the cloud-disabling property inside the JSON object:
{"disable_ollama_cloud": true}
- Save the file and restart Ollama.
If the file already contains other settings, preserve them and add the property as another valid JSON member. A malformed JSON file can prevent the service from reading its configuration, so keep quotation marks, braces, commas, and the Boolean value exactly valid.
What these settings turn off
Ollama says disabling cloud features removes cloud models and web search. This is broader than changing one model name: the setting prevents those cloud-dependent capabilities from being available through the installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I expect after restarting Ollama?
After a successful restart with cloud disabled, cloud models should no longer be available and Ollama’s web-search capability is disabled as well. Requests must therefore use models that are available locally.
- A cloud-designated model will not be a usable fallback when cloud access is disabled.
- A local model still needs to be present on the machine before it can answer requests.
- Re-enabling cloud use requires removing or changing the disabling setting and restarting Ollama again.
If the app still presents cloud choices, first confirm that the setting was applied to the service that is actually running. A variable placed in a shell that never launched the active service will not affect that service.
How should API callers handle cloud model names?
Do not assume that the label shown in the app or CLI is the exact identifier accepted by a direct API. Ollama’s cloud documentation distinguishes API model names from app and command-line names and directs API users to the current model list.
Use the current catalog
Before sending a request, copy the API identifier from Ollama’s current model list. This avoids relying on the September 2025 launch examples, which document historical naming and availability rather than a permanent registry.

Account for model retirement
Cloud model names and availability can change. If an API request that previously worked starts returning a model-not-found response, check the current catalog and update the identifier instead of adding or removing punctuation at random.
Keep local-only policy separate
API clients can still point at a local Ollama service, but disabling cloud features is a service configuration decision. Set the environment variable or JSON property where the Ollama service runs, then restart that service; changing only the client’s model string does not impose a local-only policy.
Does Ollama send prompts and answers to Ollama’s cloud service?
For a cloud model, Ollama states that it processes cloud prompts and responses to provide the service. Ollama also says, in its cloud documentation, “We do not use them to train models.” Those are vendor statements about the hosted service, not an independent audit.
Ollama’s FAQ says that when the software runs locally, Ollama does not see the prompts or data processed locally. For cloud-hosted models, the FAQ says Ollama does not store or log prompt and response content and does not train on it, while it may collect basic account information and limited usage metadata. The local and cloud statements describe different processing paths, so do not apply the local guarantee to a request that selected a cloud model.
What the suffix means for data handling
The suffix matters because it determines which path receives the request. A cloud identifier sends the request to the hosted service described above; a local model keeps inference on the Ollama installation. If your policy requires prompts to remain on a particular machine, disabling cloud features is more reliable than asking users to remember which model names are hosted.
Did the author of “I bypassed it” actually bypass cloud routing?
The title alone does not establish that. There is no documented command, model identifier, configuration file, or reproducible sequence in the available material that proves how that individual bypassed routing.
To describe the experience as fact, obtain the exact model name, the interface used, the command or API request, the Ollama version, and any environment or server configuration. Without those details, the defensible explanation is limited to Ollama’s documented controls: disable cloud features and restart, or use a model that is explicitly local.

What can go wrong when switching to local-only mode?
The variable is set in the wrong place
The most common configuration mistake is setting OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 in a terminal after Ollama has already started elsewhere. Put the variable in the environment of the service that launches Ollama, then restart that service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The JSON file is invalid
server.json must contain valid JSON. Use lowercase true, not a quoted string such as "true", and ensure the property is separated correctly from any existing properties.
The service was not restarted
Both documented routes require a restart. Editing a file or changing an environment definition does not retroactively alter a process that is already running.
A cloud model is still being selected
Disabling cloud does not convert a hosted model into a local model. Select a locally available model instead, and make sure the required model files are present on the machine.
Web search disappeared
This is expected behavior, not a separate failure: Ollama says that disabling cloud features also disables web search. If web search is required, a local-only configuration is incompatible with that feature.
What is the practical takeaway about the “silent instruction”?
Calling the suffix a “silent instruction” is a useful metaphor only if it means routing metadata. Ollama treats the marker as part of a model identifier that selects cloud hosting; it is not an invisible prompt injected into every conversation. The exact marker can vary by model and interface, so the current catalog and the service configuration are the authorities that determine what will run.
For a predictable local-only setup, configure the service explicitly with OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 or disable_ollama_cloud: true, restart Ollama, and choose a model that is available locally.

Frequently asked questions
Why did a cloud model name stop working after an update?
Ollama’s model catalog is not frozen. Names can change or models can be retired, so an older launch announcement may no longer describe the current API identifier. Check the current model list before changing punctuation or rewriting your client.
Can an app label be used unchanged in a direct API request?
Not necessarily. Ollama distinguishes names used by the app or CLI from names used by direct API callers. Use the API identifier listed for the current model rather than assuming the visible app label is interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Ollama’s privacy wording an independent guarantee?
No. Statements that cloud prompts are processed to answer requests, are not used to train models, or are not stored are Ollama’s own descriptions of its service. The available material does not establish an independent audit of those claims.
What information is needed to verify someone’s claim that they bypassed cloud routing?
Ask for the exact model identifier, interface, command or API request, Ollama version, and the environment or server.json setting in effect. A first-person assertion without those details does not show whether the request used a local model, a cloud model with a different name, or a different service entirely.
