No—Ollama’s local API has no built-in authentication. A default Ollama server listens on 127.0.0.1:11434, so only programs on the same computer can reach it. If you change OLLAMA_HOST to expose the service to a LAN or remote users, you must add the access control yourself. The usual safe design is to keep Ollama reachable only from a reverse proxy, require credentials or another identity check at that proxy, and restrict network paths with a firewall or private-network policy. Do not mistake OLLAMA_ORIGINS (a browser CORS setting) for authentication. Ollama Cloud is a separate service that uses an API key; that does not secure a self-hosted listener on port 11434.
Does Ollama have API authentication?
Ollama’s local HTTP API does not challenge callers for a username, password, token, or API key. Any client that can connect to the listener can request model operations allowed by that Ollama instance. The documented default is 127.0.0.1:11434, which limits exposure to the local host. Changing the bind address with OLLAMA_HOST changes who can reach the API, not whether the API authenticates them.

This is different from the hosted API at ollama.com, where clients authenticate with an API key in an Authorization: Bearer header. A key used for the cloud service is not automatically checked by a local Ollama process. There is therefore no local setting that turns port 11434 into a token-protected endpoint. Authentication has to happen before a request reaches Ollama, or access has to be limited so tightly that only trusted local processes or enrolled devices can connect.
That distinction matters when copying client configuration between deployments. A client that sends a cloud bearer token may still be talking to an unauthenticated local listener; the local process will not validate that header. Conversely, adding a password at a gateway does not create an Ollama account or change model permissions inside the service. The gateway controls entry, while the operating-system account running Ollama controls what that process can access on the host.

Why is port 11434 risky when it is exposed?
Port 11434 is an HTTP application interface, not a password-protected management endpoint. If it is reachable from an untrusted network, a caller may be able to enumerate models, submit prompts, generate responses, pull or delete models, and consume CPU, memory, storage, or GPU capacity, depending on the API version and the account running Ollama.
Even when the data returned by a model seems harmless, an unauthenticated caller can impose workload and storage costs on the host. A model pull can be large and long-running; repeated generation requests can monopolize a GPU; and deletion or other management calls can disrupt local applications. The exact endpoint set changes with Ollama releases, so secure the whole API rather than trying to guess which paths are harmless.

A reverse proxy does not help if clients can still connect directly to the Ollama port. The upstream must be unreachable from networks that are supposed to use the gateway.
Do not infer safety from a private address alone. A private LAN can contain guest devices, compromised workstations, or software that was never meant to call Ollama. Treat every additional interface, port mapping, and route as a separate exposure to review.
What is the safest default for a single computer?
Leave Ollama on its loopback listener when every client runs on the same machine. With the documented default, Ollama listens on 127.0.0.1:11434; local applications can use http://localhost:11434 without making the service a LAN endpoint.
- Do not set
OLLAMA_HOSTunless another device genuinely needs access. - Check both IPv4 and IPv6 listening sockets if your operating system enables IPv6; a rule covering only one address family can leave an unintended path.
- Run local clients under the least-privileged operating-system account practical, and protect the host itself with normal OS updates, disk encryption, and user access controls.
- Keep developer tools, browser extensions, and plugins that can issue local HTTP requests under the same scrutiny as any other local software.
Loopback is network containment, not user authentication. Any local process with permission to make HTTP requests can still call the API, so treat local software and plugins as trusted code. If several people share the machine, separate operating-system accounts and file permissions reduce risk, but they do not make the HTTP listener aware of individual users.

When troubleshooting, confirm the actual socket rather than relying on a configuration file. Restart Ollama after changing its environment, then inspect the host’s listening addresses. A service manager, desktop launcher, container, or shell profile can provide a different environment than the one you edited.
How do I expose Ollama to a LAN without publishing an open API?
Use the narrowest bind address and a host or network firewall rule that admits only the devices that need it. Then decide whether the LAN itself is a sufficient trust boundary. A network allowlist limits where connections originate, but it does not identify a particular person or application on an allowed device.
1. Bind only as broadly as required
Set OLLAMA_HOST to the specific interface or address needed by your deployment instead of treating a wildcard address as the default. Confirm the effective listener after restarting Ollama. If a container, virtual machine, or cloud host is involved, inspect the published ports at every layer; a container port mapping can defeat an otherwise local-only configuration.

Document why each interface is needed. If one workstation on a subnet is the only consumer, a broad LAN bind creates more reachability than necessary. If a proxy is on the same host, there is usually no reason for Ollama to listen on the LAN at all.
2. Add deny-by-default filtering
Allow TCP port 11434 only from the required subnet or fixed client addresses. Keep separate rules for IPv4 and IPv6, and review cloud security groups, router port forwarding, and host firewalls together. Do not rely on an allowlist of private addresses if those devices are not controlled or if guests can join the same network.
Use the narrowest source range practical and remove temporary rules after testing. An allow rule that remains in a router, security group, or container host can silently reopen the service after a local firewall change. Record who owns the rule and how it will be reviewed.
3. Test from both sides
From an approved client, verify that the intended API request succeeds. From an unapproved network, verify that the connection is refused or dropped, rather than merely returning an application error. Also test the server’s own address and any alternate hostname so you do not leave a second route around the rule.
How do I put Ollama behind an authenticated reverse proxy?
Run Nginx or another gateway on the client-facing address, configure it to require credentials, and proxy approved requests to Ollama on loopback. Nginx’s auth_basic module validates a username and password; its address-based allow and deny directives can add a network restriction. The gateway is the security boundary only when the upstream listener cannot be reached directly.

}
}
Create the password file with your platform’s supported Nginx/Apache utility, store it outside web-accessible directories, and set restrictive filesystem permissions. Use HTTPS whenever credentials cross a network; Basic Authentication is only an encoding of the username and password, not encryption by itself.
Decide how the gateway will handle long-running generation and model transfers before deploying it. The proxy must forward every API path your clients need, including streaming responses, while still applying the same authentication check. Keep certificates, password-file backups, and reload procedures under administrative control. A certificate protects the client-to-proxy hop; it does not by itself authorize a caller.
Preventing proxy bypass
- Keep Ollama bound to loopback when the proxy is on the same host, so remote clients cannot open port 11434 directly.
- If the proxy and Ollama are on different hosts, firewall the Ollama host to accept connections only from the proxy’s address.
- Do not publish both the proxy and port 11434 through a container, load balancer, router, or cloud security group.
- Apply the access check to every location that forwards to Ollama, including streaming and model-management endpoints; protecting only a health-check path is not protection for the API.
- Review logs for rejected requests and unexpected direct connections, and rotate credentials when a user or device is removed.
A plain proxy_pass configuration is a forwarding rule, not authentication. The official Ollama proxy example demonstrates forwarding but does not, by itself, add an access check.

Should I use a firewall allowlist, a proxy password, or both?
They answer different questions. A firewall or Nginx address rule asks “where did this connection come from?” Authentication asks “which user supplied valid credentials?” Combining them usually gives a smaller attack surface than relying on either alone.
| Approach | Controls | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loopback binding | Only local processes can connect | Single-host applications | Does not distinguish local users or processes |
| Network allowlist/firewall | Source addresses and routes | Stable, controlled LAN clients | Allowed devices and users are not individually identified |
| Reverse proxy authentication | HTTP credentials or identity at the gateway | Shared services and remote clients | Fails if the upstream port remains reachable around the proxy |
| Private network with explicit policy | Enrolled devices, users, and least-privilege routes | Remote access without public exposure | Requires identity and policy administration; product features and availability can change |
For a small trusted LAN, an allowlist may be adequate when the devices themselves are controlled. For multiple people, untrusted networks, or remote access, add an identity check and encrypted transport. A proxy password and a source-address rule are complementary: one can stop an unknown user on an allowed device, while the other can stop credential attempts arriving from an unexpected network.
There is no universal product choice or fixed cost implied by these patterns. The operational cost is mainly administration: maintaining credentials, certificates, firewall rules, device enrollment, logs, and recovery procedures. Choose the simplest boundary your users and threat model can sustain, then test it after every infrastructure change.
Can a private network replace public exposure?
Yes. A private overlay or other restricted network can make the Ollama host reachable only by enrolled devices and users, avoiding an Internet-facing port. Use a deny-by-default policy and grant access to the Ollama host and port only to the identities that need it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Tailscale documents deny-by-default access rules. Its identity-aware HTTP service product, often called PAM, was described as beta in documentation dated September 11, 2026; verify its current status, supported clients, and configuration before making it a production dependency. A private network still needs host-level controls: enrollment is not a reason to expose every service on the machine.
Private connectivity changes the route, not Ollama’s authentication behavior. A device admitted to the overlay can still reach an unauthenticated listener unless the policy or firewall blocks it. Keep the Ollama bind address, overlay policy, and host firewall aligned, and remove device or user access promptly when it is no longer required.
What does OLLAMA_ORIGINS do?
OLLAMA_ORIGINS controls which web origins may make cross-origin browser requests to Ollama. It is a CORS setting, not a credential validator. A request from an allowed origin is not proof that the caller is an authorized user, and non-browser clients generally do not use CORS at all.
Set the variable only for the browser applications you operate, and still place an authentication and network boundary in front of Ollama when the service is remotely reachable. Do not put a secret in an origin name or assume that removing an origin blocks direct HTTP clients.
CORS can help a browser enforce an intended front end, but it does not protect a service from command-line tools, scripts, native applications, or requests sent directly to the host. Treat it as a compatibility and browser-policy setting layered beneath the actual network and identity controls.

How can I verify that port 11434 is actually gated?
Test the deployment as an attacker would, not just from the machine running Ollama.
- On the Ollama host, confirm the listening address and port. The desired result for a same-host setup is loopback only; a wildcard listener requires a deliberate firewall and proxy design.
- From an approved client, call the proxy URL and confirm that unauthenticated requests receive the gateway’s authentication challenge.
- Authenticate, then make a harmless API request and verify that the response comes from Ollama through the proxy.
- From an unapproved device or network, confirm that the connection is blocked by the firewall or private-network policy.
- Attempt a direct request to the Ollama host on port 11434 from that same unapproved location. It must fail; if it succeeds, the proxy is bypassable.
- Repeat the checks over IPv6, alternate DNS names, container addresses, and any router or load-balancer public address in the path.
Record the effective bind address, firewall rules, proxy configuration, certificate renewal process, and credential owner. Re-test after Ollama, Nginx, container, operating-system, or network changes.
Include failure testing in routine maintenance. Temporarily disable or alter one rule in a controlled window, verify that the expected request fails, and restore the rule immediately. Check logs for both rejected gateway requests and any direct connection attempts that indicate an overlooked route.
What common mistakes leave Ollama exposed?
Assuming the default is a password wall
The default loopback bind limits reachability but does not authenticate local callers. Treat it as a boundary around the host, not as an API login.
Binding broadly and forgetting the firewall
Changing OLLAMA_HOST can make the service reachable on a LAN or other interface immediately. Pair the change with an explicit allowlist and a verification scan from an untrusted network.
Using CORS as access control
Origin restrictions affect browser behavior only. They do not stop scripts, command-line clients, or other programs that can open a TCP connection.
Adding a proxy without closing the upstream
If port 11434 remains open to the same clients, anyone can skip the proxy’s password and TLS. Bind Ollama to loopback or firewall the upstream to the proxy address.
Protecting only a “read” endpoint
Model downloads, deletion, generation, and other API paths can have greater impact than a status check. Put the same policy in front of the entire API surface unless you have deliberately designed and tested a narrower service.
Trusting a private network without least privilege
Private-network membership reduces Internet exposure but does not make every enrolled device trustworthy. Keep deny-by-default rules and limit access to the host and port required.

Forgetting a second address family or publishing layer
An IPv6 listener, container bridge, router forward, or cloud security-group rule can provide a path that your IPv4 host rule does not cover. Enumerate each layer and test from outside the trusted network.
Assuming a successful proxy test proves exclusivity
A working authenticated request proves only that one route works. It does not prove that the original port, another hostname, or an alternate interface is blocked. Always test the direct address separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Only local applications: keep the documented loopback default and do not expose port 11434.
- A few controlled LAN devices: bind to the necessary interface, restrict source addresses with a firewall, and consider a proxy password if users are not all equally trusted.
- Several users or remote locations: put Ollama behind an HTTPS reverse proxy with authentication, restrict the upstream to the proxy, and manage credentials centrally.
- Remote access without a public listener: use a private network with deny-by-default identity and device policy, then retain host firewall controls.
- Browser application access: configure
OLLAMA_ORIGINSfor the required origins, but use a separate authentication and network control.
The governing rule is simple: expose the smallest network surface, put an explicit access check at the first shared boundary, and make every alternate route to port 11434 fail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add an API key directly to Ollama’s local server?
The local listener does not provide a built-in API-key authentication setting. Put a gateway that validates credentials or identity in front of it, or keep the listener private and require callers to enter through a controlled network.
Is it safe to expose Ollama only to my home Wi-Fi?
It is safer than publishing the port to the Internet, but Wi-Fi membership is not an identity system. Use WPA protection, a host firewall allowlist, and a proxy login when other household, guest, or compromised devices could reach the same network.
Does HTTPS encrypt Ollama responses?
HTTPS at a reverse proxy encrypts traffic between the client and that proxy. The proxy-to-Ollama hop is separate; when both run on one host over loopback it normally stays local, while a cross-host deployment should use a protected network or encryption on that leg too.

Reset or replace the proxy’s credential file using the gateway’s administrative procedure, then reload the gateway and test an unauthenticated request. Do not remove authentication temporarily while leaving port 11434 reachable; instead, block the port until access control is restored.
Does an Ollama Cloud API key secure a self-hosted Ollama instance?
No. The cloud service at ollama.com uses bearer-token authentication, while the local listener on port 11434 does not validate that key. Configure a separate gateway or private-network policy for the self-hosted server.
Can I rely on OLLAMA_ORIGINS to stop unauthorized clients?
No. OLLAMA_ORIGINS controls browser cross-origin requests. It does not authenticate users or block command-line, native, or direct HTTP clients that can reach the port.
Do I need both a firewall and reverse-proxy authentication?
They provide different controls. The firewall limits which addresses can connect, while the proxy checks credentials or identity. Using both is appropriate when the service is shared or reachable across networks, provided the upstream port is not exposed around the proxy.
How do I know whether a proxy is being bypassed?
From an unapproved network, try the Ollama host’s address on port 11434 as well as the proxy hostname. The direct connection must fail. Repeat the check over IPv4 and IPv6 and through any container, router, or load-balancer address.
The Bottom Line
Ollama’s local API is unauthenticated by design. Keep 127.0.0.1:11434 for same-host use; for LAN or remote access, place an authenticated HTTPS gateway or a deny-by-default private network in front of it, restrict the upstream, and verify that direct connections cannot bypass those controls. OLLAMA_ORIGINS is CORS, not authentication.
