“Old iPad” is not a compatibility category. App availability depends on the model and software version, and an app that appears in a current chart may not support your device. 1. Libby: borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines
Libby connects to participating libraries’ digital collections. Borrowing requires a library card and access to a participating library’s collection. Its App Store listing describes ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and downloads for offline use, and currently states iPadOS 10 or later. 2. VLC: play media files you already have
VLC is a free, open-source player for many video and audio formats. VideoLAN describes file synchronization and network-streaming options, so it can suit an iPad used for locally stored media or a stream on your network. The App Store listing states iPadOS 9 or later. File format support does not guarantee that every file will play smoothly on older hardware; performance depends on the device and the media. 3. Spotify: stream music and podcasts
Spotify’s listing describes free online streaming of music, albums, and podcasts on a tablet. Do not count on offline downloads or audiobook catalog access as free-tier features: the listing associates those with Premium. 4. A browser: access services that still work on the device
A browser can make an older iPad useful for web-based services, but modern websites may no longer work properly on its software. Safari may be enough if the pages you need still load. Google Chrome appears in Apple’s free iPad app chart, but that does not establish compatibility with older iPads; check the listing on your device before trying to install it. 5. An e-reader app: read books from services you use
Apple Books, Kindle, and Kobo are options to investigate if you want to read books you already own or can access through those services. An iPad can bring more than one book service together on a single screen, but availability and minimum software requirements vary. Verify each app in the App Store on the iPad rather than assuming it supports your model. 6. A video or creative app: make it a dedicated screen
YouTube, Netflix, Canva, and Pinterest are examples listed in Apple’s current free iPad app chart. That chart does not show whether a particular version works on legacy hardware. Streaming services may also require an account or subscription, so “free app” does not necessarily mean free access to every video or feature. Check compatibility and access requirements before choosing one. Another possible dedicated-screen use is Sidecar with a compatible Mac, but it is only relevant if your iPad and Mac support it.
