For the Nintendo 64 version of Ocarina of Time in Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics, the official Nintendo 64 Controller is the clearest overall choice: Nintendo designed it to look and operate like the original, and it works with the library on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is optional; a compatible Joy-Con or Pro Controller can work too. Display options depend on the console: Nintendo documents N64 Nintendo Classics display-mode changes on Switch 2 only. For docked play, start with your TV’s Game Mode or low-latency preset.

What is the best controller for Ocarina of Time on Switch?

The official Nintendo 64 Controller is the best fit if you want the N64 layout that the game was designed around. Nintendo describes it as designed to look and operate like the original Nintendo 64 controller, and identifies it for use with the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics library on both Switch and Switch 2.

That layout matters because Ocarina of Time uses the N64’s central control stick, Z trigger, A and B buttons, and C-button functions for items and camera controls. A controller shaped around that arrangement offers the most direct physical match. This recommendation is based on layout and stated compatibility, not a claim that it is more comfortable for every person or eliminates every control difficulty.

You do not need to buy it to play. Nintendo says the N64 controller is optional, so a compatible Joy-Con or Pro Controller is a reasonable fallback. If you are deciding whether to purchase one, weigh the original-style layout against whether you already have a compatible controller and prefer its feel; price and availability are not specified here.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why the original-style layout helps

In the N64 design, movement, the Z trigger, the face buttons and the three C buttons occupy distinct physical areas. Ocarina of Time uses those areas repeatedly: one C direction may hold an item, another may operate the camera, and A and B handle the game’s central actions. With the official N64 Controller, your hands do not have to reinterpret those labels as a modern two-stick layout. That can make the first few sessions less confusing, particularly when a tutorial or on-screen prompt refers to a C button.

Layout fidelity is the defensible reason to choose this controller. It is not proof that every player will find the shape comfortable, that it will solve every camera issue, or that it is superior for every hand size. Treat comfort as a personal decision and, if possible, use the controller you can hold comfortably for a long session.

Should you buy the Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch Online?

Buy it when the original N64 control arrangement is your priority and you expect to play several Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics games. Skip it when you already prefer a compatible Joy-Con or Pro Controller, mainly play in handheld mode, or do not want another accessory. Nintendo identifies the N64 Controller as optional, so purchasing it is a quality-of-life choice rather than an access requirement.

Do not rely on an old price, stock notice or seller promise when making the decision. Controller pricing and availability can change, and no current retailer figure is established here. Check Nintendo or a retailer at the time you intend to buy.

How do I map the C buttons on Switch?

Use the Nintendo Classics button-assignment screen to see the mapping active on your controller and, where supported, change it. Nintendo provides a workflow for viewing or changing assignments in supported Nintendo Classics libraries.

  1. Open the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics game and access its button-assignment screen.
  2. Check which physical buttons correspond to the in-game controls, especially the C-button functions used for items and camera actions.
  3. If the library offers reassignment, adjust the controls to your preference, then return to the game and confirm that the displayed mapping matches your changes.

There is no single objectively best custom layout established here. One practical preference to consider is whether the item and camera actions you use most often are reachable without lifting your thumb from the movement stick. Treat that as a personal layout choice, not a tested recommendation. If you cannot find an assignment option, consult the library’s on-screen controls rather than assuming that every controller or game supports the same customization.

A sensible way to evaluate a custom layout

First identify the functions you press most often in your own play: movement, the action button, the sword button, item use and camera changes. Then look at the assignment screen rather than guessing from a modern controller’s labels. Make one change at a time, return to the game and test it in a safe area. If an arrangement makes an important action harder to reach, restore the previous assignment. This process keeps preference separate from a claim that one layout is universally correct.

Remember that a prompt may use the original N64 terminology while your controller uses different printed symbols. The assignment screen is the authoritative guide for your current hardware. Keep it available when switching between the official N64 Controller and a Joy-Con or Pro Controller, because the physical labels and locations are different.

What are the best display settings for Ocarina of Time on Switch?

On a standard Nintendo Switch, do not expect a display-mode menu in Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics. Nintendo’s support documentation says those display settings can be changed only while playing on Nintendo Switch 2.

Standard Nintendo Switch

On standard Switch, treat aspect ratio, scaling, sharpness, motion smoothing and latency controls as TV or monitor settings—not as guaranteed options inside the N64 library. For docked play, Game Mode or another low-latency preset is a sensible starting point. It is general display advice, not an official Ocarina of Time setting or the result of a measured latency test.

If motion interpolation makes camera movement look artificial or seems to alter its timing, turn it off. Otherwise, choose the television’s processing settings according to your preference. There is no universal brightness, contrast or sharpness number to recommend: displays differ, and no controlled comparison establishes one ideal calibration.

What to change on the television

Begin with the TV input that the Switch uses and select the set’s Game Mode or low-latency preset. This is a starting point, not a Nintendo-prescribed calibration. If the set has motion interpolation, disable it when it creates a visibly artificial look or makes movement feel different. If you prefer the effect and it does not bother you, the choice remains yours.

Do not assume that a television option named “retro,” “4:3,” “pixel perfect” or “CRT” is an option supplied by the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics application. On a standard Switch, those controls belong to the display device unless Nintendo’s current documentation says otherwise. Likewise, avoid copying someone else’s brightness, contrast or sharpness numbers: panel type, room lighting and television processing vary.

Handheld play on standard Switch

In handheld mode, use the built-in screen as presented and concentrate on a reliable control mapping. There is no documented in-app display filter to turn on for the standard Switch version. You do not need to invent a calibration target or force a television-style aspect-ratio setting onto the handheld screen.

Nintendo Switch 2 using Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics

Nintendo lists a CRT Filter display mode for N64 Nintendo Classics on Switch 2. Its support description says the mode looks like an old TV, with scan lines. Try it if you prefer that presentation; leave it off if you want a cleaner-looking image. Neither choice is objectively more accurate without a defined reference display.

The important distinction is platform-specific: Nintendo documents this display-mode control for Switch 2, not standard Switch. Do not follow instructions to enable an in-app CRT filter on a standard Switch; the option described by Nintendo is not documented there.

CRT Filter or clean image?

Choose CRT Filter when scan lines and an old-TV appearance are part of the experience you want. Leave it off when you prefer sharper edges and a modern presentation. The choice is aesthetic. The available documentation does not establish that one mode reproduces a particular television more accurately, reduces input latency or improves gameplay performance.

Which setup should I use for docked or handheld play?

Choose the setup that fits the console and screen you are using. The recommendations below separate a controller choice from display controls, because the available N64 Classics display menu depends on the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setup Controller Display approach
Standard Switch, docked Official Nintendo 64 Controller if available; otherwise inspect the active button assignments Start with TV Game Mode or a low-latency preset. Disable motion smoothing if it is distracting. Do not expect an in-app N64 display filter.
Standard Switch, handheld Use the built-in controls or another compatible option; check the active mapping Use the handheld image as presented. No special calibration numbers are established.
Switch 2, N64 Nintendo Classics Official Nintendo 64 Controller, or another compatible controller Try CRT Filter for scan lines and an old-TV look, or leave it off for a cleaner image.
Switch 2, separate 2026 title Use the controller supported by that title’s final documentation HDR and VRR are listed for compatible TVs; treat them as optional display capabilities, not required settings.

A quick setup sequence

  1. Confirm which software you opened: Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics or the separate Switch 2 title.
  2. Confirm whether the console is a standard Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
  3. Connect the controller you intend to use and inspect the active button assignments.
  4. If docked, put the TV in Game Mode or its equivalent low-latency preset.
  5. On Switch 2 N64 Nintendo Classics, decide whether the CRT Filter suits your preference.
  6. Play briefly, then change only the setting that is causing a visible or control problem.

This order prevents a common mistake: looking for Switch 2 display controls while running the standard Switch application, or treating a television’s processing menu as an in-game option.

Is the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time title the same as the N64 Classics version?

No. The legacy N64 version discussed here is accessed through Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics. Nintendo separately lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 with a November 5, 2026 release date; as of October 30, 2026, that date is still in the future. Do not apply details for that separate title to the N64 Classics version.

Access to the Nintendo 64 collection in Nintendo Classics requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. That is distinct from the separate Switch 2 title’s product listing.

What Nintendo lists for the separate Switch 2 title

Nintendo’s product listing gives the separate title TV, tabletop and handheld modes, plus HDR output and VRR output on compatible TVs. Those are specifications for that listed Switch 2 product. They are not evidence that the N64 Nintendo Classics version has HDR, VRR or the same display menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the listed release date is November 5, 2026, do not describe that product as already available on October 30, 2026. Until its final documentation is available, use the controller and display guidance for the N64 Classics version only when discussing the legacy release.

Controller comparison: which option fits you?

Decision factor Nintendo 64 Controller Joy-Con or Pro Controller
Original-layout fidelity Designed to look and operate like the original N64 controller Uses a modern controller layout; inspect the assignment screen
C-button clarity Physical N64-style arrangement Depends on the active mapping and your preference
Compatibility Nintendo identifies it for N64 Nintendo Classics on Switch and Switch 2 Use a compatible controller and verify the library’s mapping
Purchase requirement Optional accessory Useful if already owned; no new purchase required when compatible
Comfort Personal preference; no universal comfort claim Personal preference; no universal comfort claim

The practical conclusion is simple: select the N64 Controller for physical fidelity, or use the compatible controller you already like and verify its assignments. Neither choice needs to be presented as a performance upgrade backed by a latency measurement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the controller as a requirement: Nintendo says it is optional.
  • Assuming every Switch has the CRT Filter: Nintendo documents N64 Nintendo Classics display-setting changes on Switch 2 only.
  • Confusing the two releases: the N64 Classics application and the separately listed Switch 2 title are different products.
  • Copying a universal calibration number: no single brightness, contrast or sharpness setting suits every display.
  • Calling Game Mode an official Nintendo setting: it is general low-latency television advice.
  • Assuming HDR or VRR carries over: Nintendo lists those outputs for the separate Switch 2 title on compatible TVs, not for the N64 Classics version.
  • Trusting old shopping information: price, inventory, seller and delivery details can change.

Bottom line

For legacy Ocarina of Time in Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics, the official Nintendo 64 Controller is the clearest recommendation because its physical design matches the original N64 arrangement and Nintendo supports it on Switch and Switch 2. It remains optional, so a compatible Joy-Con or Pro Controller is perfectly reasonable when you already own one.

On a standard Switch, use your TV’s Game Mode or low-latency preset for docked play, turn off motion interpolation if it looks artificial or affects perceived timing, and do not expect a documented in-app CRT filter. On Switch 2, the N64 Classics display menu includes CRT Filter as an aesthetic option. Keep that legacy version separate from Nintendo’s separately listed Switch 2 title, scheduled for November 5, 2026 and documented with HDR and VRR output on compatible TVs.

Does Ocarina of Time on a standard Switch have a CRT filter?

Nintendo’s support documentation says Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics display settings can be changed only while playing on Nintendo Switch 2. Do not promise an in-app CRT Filter for the standard Switch version.

What TV setting should I try first when playing docked?

Start with the television’s Game Mode or another low-latency preset. This is general display advice, not a measured or officially prescribed Ocarina of Time setting. Disable motion interpolation if it makes camera movement look artificial or changes perceived timing.

Is there one best Joy-Con or Pro Controller C-button layout?

No universal layout is established. Use the Nintendo Classics button-assignment screen, keep frequently used item and camera functions easy to reach, and adjust according to your own preference.

Is the Nintendo 64 Controller required for the N64 Classics game?

No. Nintendo describes it as optional. A compatible Joy-Con or Pro Controller can be used after you verify the active button assignments.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 Controller for the N64 Classics version. Use a compatible controller you already own if preferred. For standard Switch docked play, begin with TV Game Mode; on Switch 2, choose CRT Filter only if you want the scan-line, old-TV look.
