Short answer: moving from NVIDIA Grace to Vera changes the host-CPU role from a capable accelerator companion to a more heavily parallel, tightly coupled engine for agentic AI. Grace remains the 72-core Arm v9 CPU already validated in Hopper, Blackwell and Grace Hopper systems. Vera adds 88 custom NVIDIA Olympus cores, 176 threads, up to 1.2 TB/s of LPDDR5X bandwidth and up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent NVLink-C2C bandwidth. That can reduce CPU-side queuing and data-transfer bottlenecks in reinforcement-learning loops, tool calls, sandboxed code and analytics. It also means adopting a new Rubin-era platform, rack design, cooling model and software-qualification plan—not simply replacing one processor in an existing server.
For established AI, HPC and analytics deployments that need a shipping, validated platform, Grace is the lower-risk choice. Vera is the forward path when measurements show that CPU execution or bidirectional CPU-GPU traffic is limiting accelerator utilization and the organization is prepared to qualify Vera Rubin systems.

What changes when an AI data center moves from Grace to Vera?
The most important change is architectural. Grace is NVIDIA’s current-generation Arm host CPU for deployed Hopper, Blackwell and Grace Hopper products. Vera is the next-generation host CPU designed for “agentic AI factories,” where a model repeatedly plans, calls tools, runs code, evaluates results and starts another step. Those workflows create much more CPU scheduling, memory movement and synchronization than a conventional, mostly feed-forward inference service.
Vera therefore targets the part of an AI system that can leave GPUs waiting: orchestration, reinforcement-learning feedback, analytics, storage and network handling, and the movement of intermediate data between CPU and GPU. The processor is also offered in standalone CPU and storage platforms, but its most consequential design is as part of the Vera Rubin platform.

Grace is not obsolete. Its 72 Arm v9 cores are already integrated into shipping NVIDIA systems, and existing software, firmware, OEM support and operational procedures are more likely to be mature. The decision is best treated as a workload and platform decision rather than a simple processor-generation comparison.
How do Vera and Grace compare on core, memory and interconnect specifications?
The headline specifications show where Vera is aimed, but they do not by themselves predict application performance. Grace configurations vary by server, and the selected Grace system’s memory capacity, channels and CPU-GPU link should be compared with the exact Vera platform under consideration.
| Attribute | NVIDIA Grace | NVIDIA Vera | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Current-generation host CPU for Hopper, Blackwell and Grace Hopper systems | Next-generation host CPU for Vera Rubin; also offered in standalone CPU and storage platforms | Grace favors established deployments; Vera favors a new Rubin-era build. |
| CPU cores | 72 Arm v9 cores, according to NVIDIA’s Data Center CPUs documentation (page accessed 2026) | 88 custom NVIDIA Olympus cores | Vera provides more physical cores for concurrent orchestration and service work. |
| Threads | Not stated for the Grace configuration in the supplied specifications | 176 threads | Thread-level concurrency matters when many agents, tool calls or data services run simultaneously. |
| CPU memory | Configuration-dependent; the relevant server specification must be checked | LPDDR5X subsystem delivering up to 1.2 TB/s | Bandwidth can help feed many CPU workers, but capacity, NUMA behavior and application footprint still need testing. |
| CPU-GPU interconnect | Check the exact Grace server or superchip specification | Second-generation NVLink-C2C delivering up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent CPU-GPU bandwidth | Higher coherent bandwidth can reduce transfer and synchronization overhead when data crosses the CPU-GPU boundary repeatedly. |
| System generation | Shipping Hopper, Blackwell and Grace Hopper platforms | Vera Rubin platform, including Vera Rubin NVL72 | Vera adoption normally involves a platform qualification, not a socket-level refresh. |
The Vera figures are maximum published specifications, not a guarantee that every workload will see a proportional gain. NVIDIA has described Vera as “twice the efficiency” and “50% faster than traditional rack-scale CPUs,” but those are vendor claims. The cited official material does not provide an independent, controlled benchmark using identical software, workload, power limits and system configurations, so procurement should require its own measurements.
Why does CPU-GPU bandwidth matter for agentic AI?
In a conventional accelerator job, the CPU may prepare a batch, launch kernels and handle input/output while the GPU performs most of the numerical work. An agentic system is more conversational: a model emits a tool request, a CPU service validates and executes it, results are marshalled back to the accelerator, and a policy or evaluator decides what happens next. Each transition can involve synchronization, memory copies, process creation, security checks or database access.
Vera’s coherent NVLink-C2C is designed for that pattern. Up to 1.8 TB/s of CPU-GPU bandwidth gives the host a higher-throughput path to accelerator memory than a conventional peripheral connection, while coherency can reduce explicit copying and make shared data structures easier to manage. The practical benefit depends on whether the application actually crosses the boundary often enough to be limited by it.
Where the link can remove a bottleneck
- Tool calling: CPU workers can dispatch APIs, retrieve documents, run parsers and return structured results while the GPU continues model work.
- Sandboxed code: short-lived jobs can be scheduled, isolated and collected without leaving an expensive accelerator idle between calls.
- Reinforcement learning: rollout generation, environment simulation, reward calculation and policy updates can create a stream of CPU-side tasks around accelerator training.
- Analytics and data movement: filtering, feature preparation and post-processing can run close to the accelerator without repeatedly staging data through a slower path.
If profiling shows that GPU kernels are already the dominant cost and CPU-to-GPU transfers are infrequent, the larger link may not materially change throughput. The measurement to request is not bandwidth in isolation, but end-to-end latency, accelerator duty cycle and completed agent steps per unit of power.
Which workloads are a good fit for Vera?
Vera is most compelling when many independent CPU activities surround each accelerator operation. The following workloads align with NVIDIA’s stated target areas.

Agentic inference and orchestration
Multi-step agents can generate thousands of small scheduling and service events for every large model invocation. More cores and threads can increase the number of concurrent agents, while high CPU memory bandwidth helps workers process context, retrieval results and intermediate state. Test queueing latency and tail latency, not only average tokens per second.
Reinforcement-learning pipelines
RL systems often combine accelerator training with CPU-heavy environment interaction, trajectory handling and evaluation. Vera’s additional cores and coherent link are relevant when rollout workers or feedback processing keep GPUs underfilled. The correct comparison is completed environment steps or policy updates at a fixed quality target and power envelope.
Sandboxed tools and code execution
Tool execution introduces process, container or virtual-machine overhead, plus serialization and security policy checks. A Vera-based host may provide more concurrency for these short jobs. Operators still need to validate isolation technology, startup time, file-system behavior and observability in the chosen software stack; CPU specifications do not automatically solve those issues.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Analytics, retrieval and data services
Retrieval, ranking, feature engineering and post-inference analytics can become the pacing stage in a pipeline. Vera’s LPDDR5X bandwidth can help streaming and parallel transformations, but capacity and data locality are equally important. A memory-bandwidth result on a synthetic benchmark should not be substituted for the application’s real query mix.
When is Grace still the better choice?
Grace is the safer option when the organization values a shipping, validated NVIDIA host CPU and the workload is already performing acceptably on Hopper, Blackwell or Grace Hopper systems. It is also preferable when a migration would force a new rack, liquid-cooling design, network fabric, operating-system image or OEM support contract without a measured business benefit.
- Established AI and HPC: batch training, conventional inference and HPC codes that already scale well on the current platform may gain little from changing the host.
- Stable CPU demand: if CPU utilization is low and GPUs remain busy, additional host concurrency is unlikely to be the limiting factor.
- Validated software: production environments with extensive driver, firmware, container and scheduler qualification should price the risk of requalification.
- Near-term capacity: if Grace systems are available from the organization’s preferred OEM or cloud provider while Vera capacity is not, schedule certainty can outweigh theoretical performance.
Grace should not be selected merely because it has fewer cores, nor Vera merely because it is newer. Collect traces that show where time is spent before choosing a generation.
Is Vera a drop-in replacement for Grace?
No. The evidence describes Vera as part of a new Rubin-era platform, not as a processor that can be inserted into an existing Grace server. A Vera deployment can include a different superchip, GPU generation, NVLink fabric, networking components, rack power design and cooling system.

NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin NVL72 specification pairs one Vera CPU with two Rubin GPUs in each superchip. A full 72-GPU NVL72 rack contains 36 Vera CPUs. That topology is a system-level design choice: CPU placement, GPU locality, collective communication, service processors and network paths all affect application behavior.
The surrounding rack matters
The co-designed Vera Rubin rack includes Rubin GPUs, NVLink 6, ConnectX-9 networking, BlueField-4 data-processing units and Spectrum-6 Ethernet switching. Those components determine how data enters the rack, how GPUs communicate and how storage or tenant traffic is isolated. Comparing only CPU list prices misses the infrastructure that must be bought, powered, cooled and supported with the CPU.
What does a Vera Rubin NVL72 deployment change operationally?
An NVL72 purchase changes capacity planning from individual servers to a rack-scale unit. The organization must evaluate rack power, liquid-cooling capability, floor loading, network uplinks, service procedures and spare strategy together. A rack that delivers more useful agent steps can still be a poor fit if the data center cannot supply the required power or cooling.
Power and cooling
Obtain the manufacturer’s measured rack power envelope for the exact configuration, including networking and management components. Ask whether the quoted figure is typical, peak or a design limit, and model the effect of sustained reinforcement-learning or inference loads. Cooling requirements should be reviewed with facilities before an order is placed; the processor comparison alone does not establish a cooling design.

Agent systems frequently fetch tools, documents and datasets while models run. Validate the ConnectX-9, BlueField-4 and Spectrum-6 configuration offered by the OEM, then test storage and east-west traffic under the same concurrency as production. A fast CPU-GPU link cannot compensate for a saturated retrieval or network path.
Scheduling and tenancy
Rack-scale systems need explicit policies for GPU partitions, CPU service pools, tool sandboxes and maintenance. Measure how the scheduler places CPU-heavy tasks near their GPUs and how failures are isolated. If multiple teams share the rack, include noisy-neighbor tests in acceptance criteria.
How should an organization decide between Grace and Vera?
Use a staged decision that starts with a bottleneck and ends with a platform-level total-cost comparison.

- Baseline the current Grace system. Record GPU utilization, CPU utilization by service, CPU-GPU transfer volume, queueing delay, tail latency, completed requests or agent steps, memory bandwidth and power. Capture the software versions and topology so another platform can be compared fairly.
- Identify the limiting stage. Classify delays as accelerator compute, CPU scheduling, memory bandwidth, synchronization, storage, network or software serialization. Vera is most relevant when CPU execution or CPU-GPU movement is visible on the critical path.
- Define a fixed quality target. For inference, hold response quality, context length and tool-success rate constant. For RL, hold environment, seed policy and evaluation quality constant. Do not accept a throughput gain that comes from doing less work.
- Request a representative pilot. Use the same model, agent framework, tool set, data, container images and observability stack on Grace and Vera. Include warm-up, steady state, failures and recovery rather than a short peak-only run.
- Compare the complete platform. Price GPUs, CPUs, memory, networking, storage, rack integration, power delivery, cooling, software qualification, support and facility changes. Compare cost per successful request or training milestone, not CPU price alone.
- Set acceptance gates. Require documented performance at the chosen power limit, software compatibility evidence, security validation, service-level objectives and an upgrade or replacement path. If a result depends on an unreleased component or an unavailable cloud region, mark that dependency explicitly.
How should Vera performance claims be tested?
NVIDIA’s efficiency and speed statements are useful hypotheses, not independent benchmarks. A credible test controls the variables that can otherwise make a newer rack appear faster.
Control the hardware and software
- Use the same model weights, precision, batch or concurrency, tokenizer, retrieval corpus and tool implementations.
- Record CPU and GPU frequencies, power caps, memory allocation, NUMA placement, driver, firmware, compiler, CUDA and framework versions.
- Run enough time to include cache effects, thermal steady state and background service load.
- Report median and tail latency, throughput, accelerator utilization, CPU utilization, memory bandwidth and energy per completed unit.
Measure the agent, not only the kernel
Kernel benchmarks can hide the orchestration cost that Vera is intended to address. Measure end-to-end agent turns, successful tool calls, rollout steps, data records processed or other business-level units. Break the result into model time, CPU service time, transfer time, queueing and idle gaps so the reason for any improvement is visible.
Test failure and recovery
Production systems restart tools, lose network paths, retry requests and drain workloads during maintenance. Include these cases in the pilot. A platform that is faster in an ideal run but harder to debug or recover may not reduce operating cost.
What are the economics beyond the processor?
There is no meaningful Vera-versus-Grace decision based on CPU purchase price alone. Vera may change the number and type of racks, GPUs, switches, cooling equipment and support contracts required for a target workload. Grace may have a lower transition cost because the organization already owns validated systems and operating procedures.
| Cost or risk area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Capital equipment | How many complete systems or racks meet the required throughput, and what GPUs, switches, DPUs, memory and storage are included? |
| Facilities | Can the site provide the quoted peak power, liquid cooling, rack space and network connectivity? |
| Software qualification | Which drivers, firmware, operating systems, containers, schedulers and security controls must be retested? |
| Availability | Which OEMs and cloud providers can supply Vera capacity in the required region and time frame, and what support terms apply? |
| Utilization | Will the organization keep a Vera rack busy, or will a smaller Grace deployment deliver better utilization? |
| Energy | What is the measured energy per request, rollout step or training milestone at the production quality target? |
Cloud pricing, regional availability and partner inventory are deployment-specific and can change. Obtain a dated quote and verify the exact Vera or Grace configuration rather than inferring compatibility from a generic instance name.

What software and compatibility checks are required?
CPU instruction behavior is only one part of qualification. The host image must work with the GPU driver, accelerator libraries, communication stack, container runtime, scheduler, monitoring agents and security controls used by the application.
- Confirm that the operating-system and container images support the Vera platform and its firmware revisions.
- Rebuild or retest native extensions, data-processing libraries and sandbox runtimes that depend on CPU features or thread behavior.
- Verify NUMA and CPU affinity settings so tool workers are placed near the GPUs and memory they use.
- Retest checkpointing, restart, live maintenance and telemetry; rack-scale systems can expose different failure domains.
- Validate licensing, support response and spare-part procedures with the selected OEM or hosting provider.
Keep a Grace-compatible production path during migration when service continuity matters. A staged rollout allows the team to compare real traffic and reverse the change if software or operational assumptions fail.
Best Value
What are the main risks of choosing Vera too early?
The largest risk is paying for a platform capability that the workload cannot use. If GPU utilization is high and CPU-side work is minor, the new interconnect and additional threads may not repay the rack-level transition. Other risks include immature tooling for a particular application, limited regional capacity, unplanned facility upgrades and a larger qualification burden.
Mitigate those risks with a time-boxed pilot, explicit acceptance metrics and a contract that identifies the exact hardware, firmware and support level. Treat NVIDIA’s comparative figures as vendor guidance until an independent or internally controlled test demonstrates the benefit on the intended workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat is the practical verdict for an AI data-center planner?
Choose Grace for current, validated NVIDIA deployments where conventional AI, HPC or analytics workloads already meet their service targets and the cost of changing platforms is hard to justify. Consider Vera when profiling demonstrates that orchestration, reinforcement-learning feedback, sandboxed tools, analytics or CPU-GPU data movement is throttling accelerator throughput, and when the organization can adopt a Rubin-era rack with its associated power, cooling, networking and software work.
The decisive artifact should be a workload-specific comparison that reports useful work per unit of power and total platform cost. Core counts and bandwidth explain why Vera may help; only a controlled pilot can show whether it helps your application enough to warrant the platform change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Grace and Vera CPUs be mixed in one production cluster?
The published material does not establish a supported mixed-rack topology. Treat them as separate validated platforms unless the chosen OEM, scheduler and support contract explicitly document interoperability, and plan for differences in GPU locality, firmware and performance characteristics.
Does Vera eliminate the need for GPUs in an AI server?
No. Vera is a host CPU intended to coordinate and feed accelerators; Vera Rubin systems pair it with Rubin GPUs. A CPU-only Vera or storage platform may serve different tasks, but it is not a substitute for GPU capacity in model training or accelerator-based inference.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is Vera’s 1.2 TB/s memory figure the usable memory capacity?
No. It is a peak LPDDR5X bandwidth figure. The amount of memory available to applications, its capacity limits and the behavior of a specific server configuration must be confirmed in that platform’s technical documentation.
Will every agent framework run faster on Vera?
No. Improvement depends on how much time the framework spends in CPU scheduling, serialization, tool execution and CPU-GPU transfers. Framework overhead, storage latency or network delays can remain the bottleneck even with more CPU cores and a faster coherent link.
