Choose an RTX Spark laptop if CUDA compatibility, Windows software, NVIDIA acceleration or the broadest practical local-model support is your priority. Choose a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max if you value macOS, long battery life and Apple media workflows more than CUDA. At the maximum configuration, both platforms can provide 128GB of unified memory, so capacity alone does not decide the contest. The important differences are the runtime that supports your model, quantization and context settings, sustained power, and whether your tools expect CUDA or Apple’s Metal ecosystem. NVIDIA positions RTX Spark for models up to 120 billion parameters, but that is a platform guideline rather than a promise of useful speed for every 120B model. One TechRadar test found an RTX Spark system about 25% faster than an M5 Max MacBook Pro in a particular local agentic workload; that result is directional, not a universal benchmark.

Which laptop is better for local AI: RTX Spark or MacBook Pro?

For most developers who install open-source inference tools, an RTX Spark laptop is the safer choice because CUDA, TensorRT and NVFP4 are directly supported in NVIDIA’s intended software stack. It is also the more flexible option when you want to experiment with NVIDIA-specific optimizations or Windows applications. A MacBook Pro is the better fit when your work already lives in macOS, your models run well through Metal-based software, and battery endurance and media-production integration matter more than CUDA coverage.

Graphics and AI hardware Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores; up to 1 petaflop FP4 AI performance Apple GPU and Neural Engine; M5 Max configuration reaches 614GB/s memory bandwidth
CPU information supplied 20-core Grace CPU Apple offers M5 Pro and M5 Max; the supplied specifications do not state comparable core counts for every configuration
Rated power envelope 45–80W TDP, depending on configuration Not stated as a single comparable TDP in the supplied specifications
Primary software advantage CUDA, TensorRT and NVFP4 on Windows macOS, Metal and Apple’s Neural Engine ecosystem
Battery claim Not stated in the supplied specifications 16-inch model: up to 24 hours of video streaming with M5 Pro and up to 22 hours with M5 Max (Apple)
Large-model guidance NVIDIA says models up to 120B parameters with a 1M context can run on the platform; practical speed depends on the model and settings 128GB models can match RTX Spark’s maximum memory tier, but no equivalent Apple 120B platform claim is supplied

The table shows why there is no single winner. RTX Spark has the more specialized local-AI stack and a higher stated FP4 capability, while the MacBook Pro combines large memory with Apple’s battery and operating-system advantages. Select the platform that removes the largest obstacle in your own workflow.

What exactly is an RTX Spark laptop?

RTX Spark is NVIDIA’s laptop platform for local AI development and inference. The top configuration combines a Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores, a 20-core Grace CPU, 45–80W TDP options and as much as 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory. NVIDIA rates the platform at up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance. Because the CPU and GPU use the same memory pool, a model can use the full installed capacity instead of being restricted to a small, separate graphics-memory allocation.

NVIDIA describes the platform as a Windows laptop environment for building, prototyping, fine-tuning and running models and agents locally with the CUDA stack. Its published guidance names CUDA, TensorRT and NVFP4, and says the systems can run models up to 120B parameters with a 1M context. “Up to” is important: memory consumed by weights is only one part of a run. Quantization format, context length, key-value cache, runtime overhead and operating-system use all reduce the headroom available to the model.

NVIDIA announced RTX Spark laptops from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and MSI on October 16, 2026. The announcement establishes the participating manufacturers, not one universal chassis, weight, display, price or cooling design. Every listing should therefore be checked for its exact GPU configuration, memory amount, power limit and regional stock.

What do M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro offer for local models?

Apple offers MacBook Pro configurations with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and up to 128GB of unified memory. That maximum equals the largest RTX Spark memory configuration, which means Apple is not automatically limited to small models. M5 Max systems reach 614GB/s of memory bandwidth, a specification that can help memory-bound workloads, although bandwidth is not a substitute for software support or a benchmark on your chosen model.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is rated for up to 24 hours of video streaming with M5 Pro and up to 22 hours with M5 Max. Video-streaming figures are not local-inference figures: sustained model generation keeps the processor and GPU busier and can produce different battery life, heat and fan behavior. They are still useful evidence that the MacBook is designed for long unplugged sessions when your workload is light or intermittent.

MacBook Pro local-AI performance depends on software that targets Apple’s Metal and Neural Engine ecosystem. Many popular projects provide macOS builds, but feature parity, supported quantization formats and optimization quality can differ from CUDA releases. Check the runtime’s current documentation for your exact model before buying; a model that loads on macOS may not expose every acceleration feature available on NVIDIA hardware.

How much model capacity do you really get from 128GB?

Both platforms can be configured with 128GB of unified memory, so the headline capacity is a tie at the top. That does not mean every 120B model will fit comfortably or run at an acceptable token rate. The model’s weight format, context length, temporary buffers, operating-system usage and whether all weights remain resident determine the usable limit.

Weights are only the first memory cost

Quantization reduces the storage required for model weights, but lower-bit formats can involve different kernels and quality trade-offs. A long context adds a key-value cache that grows as the conversation expands. Tool use, multimodal inputs, batching and multiple concurrent requests add more allocations. Leave practical headroom instead of treating the advertised RAM number as a model-size guarantee.

What NVIDIA’s 120B statement means

NVIDIA’s “up to 120B parameters with 1M context” statement is a platform guideline. It does not guarantee that every 120B model, quantization or 1M-token session will fit, nor that generation will be fast enough for interactive use. Treat it as an indication of the upper class of experiments the platform targets, then validate the exact checkpoint and runtime.

Why Apple’s equal capacity changes the decision

A 128GB M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro can remove the simple “the Mac has less memory” argument. If your model and runtime perform well through Metal, Apple’s large unified-memory option may be sufficient. The deciding question becomes compatibility and measured throughput rather than capacity alone.

Can you run CUDA on a MacBook Pro?

CUDA is NVIDIA’s proprietary GPU-computing platform and requires NVIDIA GPU support. Apple silicon MacBook Pro systems do not provide a CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPU, so you cannot use CUDA acceleration on the Mac in the same way as on RTX Spark. You can run many AI applications through macOS-native back ends such as Metal, but that is a different implementation.

This distinction affects installation instructions, available kernels, quantization formats, extensions and community troubleshooting. A project whose primary release targets CUDA may work on a Mac through a conversion or alternate back end, yet lack a feature, run more slowly or require a separate build. If your employer, course or research code specifically requires CUDA, choose RTX Spark or another NVIDIA system rather than assuming a Mac workaround will be equivalent.

Which platform is faster for local inference?

There is no defensible universal speed winner from the available evidence. Measure the exact model, quantization, context length, runtime version and power mode on the hardware you plan to buy. A result obtained with one agentic workflow cannot be transferred to every chat, coding, vision or fine-tuning workload.

What the published comparison actually shows

TechRadar reported roughly 25% faster completion on an RTX Spark laptop than on an M5 Max MacBook Pro in one local agentic workload. The result is useful directional evidence that the NVIDIA platform can lead in a CUDA-optimized task, but the available report does not provide enough standardized detail to serve as a general benchmark. It does not establish the same advantage for every model, token rate, context size or battery mode.

How to make a fair test

  1. Use the identical model checkpoint and quantization on both machines. If one system must use a different format, record that difference rather than presenting the results as a hardware-only comparison.
  2. Keep prompt text, context length, sampling settings, tool calls and number of concurrent requests identical.
  3. Use the same workload phases: model load time, prompt processing, first-token latency and sustained generation. Agentic tasks should also record the number of tool calls and retries.
  4. Test plugged-in and battery modes separately. A laptop can lower clocks or power limits away from the charger, changing sustained throughput.
  5. Run enough repetitions to expose thermal throttling and report tokens per second or completion time with the model and runtime named.

This process prevents a high peak result from hiding a long model-load delay or a slowdown after several minutes of generation.

Which laptop is more portable during long AI sessions?

Apple supplies the clearer battery evidence: the 16-inch MacBook Pro is rated for up to 24 hours of video streaming with M5 Pro and up to 22 hours with M5 Max. Those are Apple’s media-playback claims, not a promise of 22–24 hours of continuous local inference. NVIDIA’s supplied RTX Spark specifications do not state a comparable battery figure, and the 45–80W TDP range indicates that system design and power mode will matter.

Local inference is a sustained workload. Expect a plugged-in session to deliver the most consistent performance on either platform. For travel, compare the exact laptop’s weight, charger size, cooling and battery tests rather than assuming every RTX Spark or MacBook Pro configuration behaves like another model. An RTX Spark system with a higher power limit may complete a job sooner but use more energy; a lower-power configuration may be easier to carry while producing lower sustained throughput.

Which ecosystem fits your software and workflow?

Choose RTX Spark for CUDA-first development

  • You need CUDA, TensorRT, NVFP4 or NVIDIA-specific kernels.
  • Your Windows tools, extensions or deployment target are already standardized around NVIDIA GPUs.
  • You want to experiment with the broadest set of CUDA tutorials, containers and optimization examples.
  • You value NVIDIA’s stated support for large-model and long-context experiments and can accept that the figures are guidelines.

Choose MacBook Pro for macOS and media workflows

  • You depend on macOS applications, Apple device integration or a Unix-like development environment that your team already supports.
  • Your local models run reliably through Metal-based software and do not require CUDA-only extensions.
  • You spend substantial time editing video or audio and want the same machine to serve that workflow.
  • Long unplugged operation is more important than access to NVIDIA-specific acceleration.

Neither choice eliminates the need to inspect software support. Ask whether your preferred runtime supports the model architecture, quantization, context length, GPU offload and any multimodal or tool-use features you need.

How should you choose the right memory tier?

Buy memory for the largest model and context you expect to keep loaded, not merely for today’s small assistant. Because unified memory is normally fixed at purchase, an undersized configuration cannot be upgraded later in the way a desktop’s system RAM sometimes can.

Your priority Practical configuration decision Reason
Small or medium quantized models, coding and general chat A lower-memory configuration may be adequate; verify the runtime’s footprint first Leaves budget for storage and a better display without paying for unused capacity
Several models, long contexts or local agents Prefer a high-memory configuration and leave headroom for caches and tools Context and agent state can consume substantial memory beyond the weights
Very large models and experimentation Consider 128GB on either platform, then benchmark the exact model Both platforms reach the same maximum capacity, so software and throughput decide
CUDA-dependent research or deployment parity Prioritize RTX Spark even if a 128GB MacBook is available Matching memory does not provide CUDA compatibility

Do not spend for 128GB solely because NVIDIA mentions 120B. A 120B checkpoint may require a particular quantization, leave little context headroom or generate too slowly for your use. Conversely, if you routinely keep multiple models, large retrieval indexes and long conversations resident, the extra capacity can prevent swapping and reloads.

What should you verify before buying?

  1. Exact chip and GPU configuration: confirm the RTX Spark GPU core count, memory amount and stated power range, or the MacBook’s M5 Pro versus M5 Max chip.
  2. Runtime support: check the current release notes for your model architecture, quantization and operating system. “Runs on macOS” or “supports NVIDIA” is not enough detail.
  3. Memory headroom: estimate weights, context cache, runtime overhead and other applications together. Plan for growth rather than filling all memory on the first load.
  4. Power behavior: find out whether a benchmark was plugged in, which performance mode was selected and whether the test ran long enough to reveal throttling.
  5. Portability: compare the exact chassis, charger and battery claims. RTX Spark specifications supplied here do not establish one common weight or endurance figure.
  6. Availability: NVIDIA announced participating manufacturers on October 16, 2026, but regional inventory and final configurations can differ. Confirm stock and warranty in your country.
  7. Price: compare current listings for the same memory, storage and display. No universal RTX Spark or MacBook Pro price is established by the supplied specifications.

What are the common failure modes?

The model loads but generation is painfully slow

Check whether the runtime is using the intended GPU back end and whether the model has spilled into system memory. Reduce context length, use a supported quantization and close other memory-heavy applications. On RTX Spark, verify that the CUDA/TensorRT path is active; on MacBook Pro, verify that the Metal path is active rather than CPU-only execution.

The model does not fit despite having 128GB

Look at the complete memory allocation, not just parameter count. A long context, key-value cache, multimodal encoder, batching or a second resident model can consume the remaining space. Shorten the context, reduce concurrency, unload unused models or choose a smaller quantization.

A project works on one platform but not the other

Check for CUDA-only extensions, unsupported operators and differences in quantization kernels. Use the project’s platform-specific installation path and record the version of the runtime. If a required extension has no Metal implementation, moving to RTX Spark is usually more reliable than trying to force an equivalent Mac build.

Performance falls after several minutes

Repeat the test long enough to reach a steady temperature and compare plugged-in performance modes. Sustained clocks, cooling and power limits can matter more than a short peak benchmark. Report the steady result separately from the first-minute result when evaluating a laptop for daily use.

Which laptop should you buy?

Buy an RTX Spark laptop when local AI is the primary reason for the purchase, especially if your stack expects CUDA, TensorRT or NVFP4, or if you want the least friction with NVIDIA-oriented tools. A 128GB model is the capacity choice for large-model experimentation, but confirm the exact OEM configuration and do not interpret the 120B/1M-context guidance as a speed guarantee.

Buy an M5 Pro MacBook Pro when you need macOS, strong battery-oriented portability and a balanced machine for development and media work, and your chosen inference software supports Metal well. Buy an M5 Max when its additional GPU resources and 614GB/s memory bandwidth are useful for your workloads and you accept the stated 22-hour video-streaming rating rather than expecting that figure during inference.

The final decision should come from a short bake-off using your actual model and runtime. If the test reveals a CUDA dependency, RTX Spark wins regardless of equal memory. If both systems run the model adequately and you spend more time away from an outlet or inside Apple’s media ecosystem, the MacBook Pro can be the more convenient computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 128GB MacBook Pro run a 120B language model?

It may be able to load some 120B checkpoints when the quantization and context fit within available memory, but Apple does not make the same 120B platform statement cited for RTX Spark. The model’s runtime, cache size and generation speed must be tested on the specific M5 Pro or M5 Max configuration.

Does a longer context always improve local-model answers?

No. A longer context gives the model more information, but it increases the key-value cache and can reduce available memory and generation speed. Use the shortest context that reliably contains the documents, conversation and tools your task needs.

Will local inference use cloud services on either laptop?

The model can run entirely on the laptop when you use a local runtime and local model files, but an application may still send telemetry, update checks or optional requests to online services. Review the software’s network settings and test with network access restricted if privacy is a requirement.

Can I move the same quantized model file between RTX Spark and MacBook Pro?

Sometimes, but file portability does not guarantee kernel or feature portability. Each runtime must support the model architecture and quantization on its CUDA or Metal back end, and one platform may require conversion or a different quantization for practical speed.
