Choose NVIDIA Blackwell when CUDA coverage, high-bandwidth NVLink scale-up and a turnkey system are the priorities; choose AMD Instinct when more HBM memory per accelerator and an open ROCm software stack better fit the workload. On published specifications, a B200 has 180 GB of HBM3e and up to 8 TB/s of memory bandwidth, while an MI300X has 192 GB of HBM3 and 5.3 TB/s, and an MI325X has 256 GB of HBM3E and 6 TB/s. Those figures describe hardware capacity and peak bandwidth—not application speed. The right purchase depends on model fit, framework and kernel support, interconnect topology, power and cooling, support arrangements, and a verified total cost for the deployment you can actually obtain.

What is the practical difference between Blackwell and Instinct?

NVIDIA Blackwell and AMD Instinct are families of data-center AI accelerators, not single interchangeable cards. This comparison focuses on NVIDIA B200 and AMD MI300X and MI325X, along with the multi-GPU systems and deployment paths identified for them. Blackwell’s strongest infrastructure case is its closely integrated NVLink/NVSwitch scale-up fabric and mature CUDA path, including turnkey DGX options. Instinct’s strongest case is greater HBM capacity per accelerator, particularly the MI325X, alongside AMD’s ROCm stack.

For an AI team, the key distinction is what constrains the workload. If GPUs need to exchange data rapidly during distributed training or inference, the system’s GPU-to-GPU fabric and software support matter alongside each GPU’s memory. If a model’s weights, working tensors or long-context workload are difficult to fit in available HBM, more memory on each accelerator may reduce the need to divide the work across devices. Neither advantage alone proves that one platform will deliver higher throughput for a particular model.

The named figures below come from NVIDIA and AMD product documentation. Peak performance or bandwidth specifications should not be mistaken for measured application results: precision, sparsity, model, kernels, software versions and system configuration can change real outcomes. The available product specifications do not establish a like-for-like purchase price or cloud price comparison.

How do B200, MI300X and MI325X compare on memory and bandwidth?

MI325X offers the largest per-GPU memory capacity in this comparison. B200 lists the highest per-GPU peak memory bandwidth. MI300X sits between the other two on capacity, but its published peak bandwidth is lower than either B200 or MI325X.

Accelerator or configuration GPU count GPU memory Memory bandwidth What the figure describes
NVIDIA B200 One GPU 180 GB HBM3e Up to 8 TB/s NVIDIA’s current HGX B200 documentation lists per-GPU figures.
AMD Instinct MI300X One accelerator 192 GB HBM3 5.3 TB/s peak theoretical AMD’s MI300 Series product page figures.
AMD Instinct MI325X One accelerator 256 GB HBM3E 6 TB/s AMD’s MI300 Series product page figures.
Eight-GPU MI325X Platform Eight accelerators 2 TB HBM3E total 48 TB/s aggregate AMD’s platform-level totals; aggregate bandwidth is not the bandwidth of one GPU.
NVIDIA DGX B200 Eight GPUs 1,440 GB total GPU memory 64 TB/s aggregate HBM3e NVIDIA’s DGX B200 system documentation figures.
NVIDIA DGX GB200 72 Blackwell GPUs 13.4 TB HBM3e 576 TB/s aggregate NVIDIA’s DGX GB200 datasheet figures for a rack-scale Grace Blackwell system.

What memory capacity changes

HBM capacity determines how much model state and working data can reside in GPU memory; it is not a direct measure of how quickly a model will generate tokens or complete training. Compared with the B200’s listed 180 GB, MI300X provides 12 GB more per accelerator and MI325X provides 76 GB more. Those differences can matter when a model or workload is close to a memory-fit threshold. More memory may reduce the amount of model or tensor partitioning needed for a given deployment, but it does not eliminate the need to check the model’s actual memory requirements or system software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MI325X’s 256 GB HBM3E is especially relevant for deployments considering large parameter weights or long-context inference, where memory capacity can be a limiting resource. It is a capacity argument, not evidence that MI325X will serve a given model faster than B200. For a real comparison, measure the intended model, context length, batch behavior and precision on the exact systems under consideration.

What bandwidth changes

Memory bandwidth is the rate at which data can move between an accelerator’s HBM and its compute resources. The vendor-listed peak is relevant when a workload is memory-bandwidth-bound, but it is not a prediction of end-to-end model throughput. B200’s stated up-to-8-TB/s figure exceeds the MI325X’s 6 TB/s and MI300X’s 5.3 TB/s figures; AMD describes the MI300X figure as peak theoretical. These are vendor specifications with differing phrasing, so treat them as directional hardware data rather than a controlled benchmark.

How do NVIDIA’s multi-GPU systems compare with AMD’s platform figures?

Compare complete configurations as well as individual accelerators. A system brings together GPU count, aggregate HBM, fabric, networking, software and operational support; a per-GPU specification cannot stand in for that whole system.

HGX B200 and DGX B200

NVIDIA’s eight-GPU HGX B200 configuration combines 1.44 TB of total GPU memory with up to 64 TB/s of aggregate HBM bandwidth. NVIDIA lists fifth-generation NVLink GPU-to-GPU bandwidth at 1,800 GB/s and 14.4 TB/s aggregate for the eight-GPU configuration. NVIDIA’s DGX B200 documentation likewise lists eight B200 GPUs, 1,440 GB of total GPU memory, 64 TB/s of HBM3e bandwidth and 14.4 TB/s of aggregate NVLink bandwidth.

HGX B200 is the multi-GPU platform reference; DGX B200 is a turnkey system that includes NVIDIA AI Enterprise and Mission Control software. The distinction matters in procurement: a platform specification and a packaged system do not represent the same purchasing or operating model. NVIDIA describes DGX B200 as a system intended for AI infrastructure workloads spanning analytics, training and inference.

DGX GB200

DGX GB200 moves beyond an eight-GPU node to a rack-scale Grace Blackwell system. NVIDIA’s datasheet lists 72 Blackwell GPUs, 13.4 TB of HBM3e, 576 TB/s of memory bandwidth and 1,440 PFLOPS of sparse FP4 tensor performance. The FP4 number is a vendor-specified, sparse, precision-specific peak; it is not a measured training or inference throughput figure. Do not compare it directly with an application result or with a figure quoted at another precision.

Eight-GPU MI325X Platform

AMD lists 2 TB of HBM3E and 48 TB/s of aggregate bandwidth for its eight-GPU MI325X Platform. These platform totals help characterize memory resources across the configuration, but the cited AMD figures do not provide an equivalent GPU-to-GPU fabric bandwidth value for a direct comparison with B200 NVLink. Do not infer that the interconnects are equivalent—or that one is slower—from the absence of a matching figure in this comparison.

How important is the GPU-to-GPU fabric?

It is important whenever a workload depends on frequent communication among GPUs. For distributed training and high-throughput inference, NVIDIA’s stated NVLink bandwidth and NVSwitch-based scale-up design are meaningful infrastructure characteristics, especially when GPU-to-GPU communication is a bottleneck. A system with ample aggregate compute can still fail to use it efficiently if data exchange, topology or software scaling becomes the limiting factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the 1,800 GB/s B200 figure as a universal speed for every communication pattern or as a promise that an application will scale linearly. System topology, the number of communicating GPUs, workload parallelism and implementation all matter. Likewise, aggregate figures such as 14.4 TB/s describe the cited eight-GPU configuration; they are not the link bandwidth available to every GPU pair in every operation.

AMD’s product figures here establish the MI325X Platform’s GPU count, aggregate HBM and aggregate bandwidth, but they do not establish a directly comparable fabric specification. If AMD is a candidate, request the exact system topology and interconnect details from the OEM or integrator and validate them against the workload’s communication pattern rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Which software ecosystem is a better fit: CUDA or ROCm?

NVIDIA systems are built around CUDA and NVIDIA’s enterprise AI software stack. AMD’s ROCm documentation officially supports MI300X and MI325X on Linux, with compatibility dependent on ROCm release and framework. “Supported” at the accelerator level does not establish that every framework version, model, kernel, quantization method or deployment tool you need is ready for your production environment.

When CUDA coverage may reduce integration risk

Blackwell is the lower-integration-risk choice when the required models and tools already have dependable CUDA paths and the team values a unified vendor system and software offering. This is a practical ecosystem advantage, not a claim that every CUDA workload automatically runs optimally on B200. Confirm that the exact framework release, kernels, precision modes and deployment components your service uses are supported on the target B200 system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to validate on ROCm

For MI300X or MI325X, verify the specific ROCm release and Linux environment alongside the framework, model kernels and quantization path. Run the target workload rather than relying on a general compatibility statement: a model can load successfully while a performance-critical operator, precision mode or optimized kernel path remains unavailable or behaves differently from the existing deployment. Check both correctness and performance before treating a port as production-ready.

Neither vendor’s stack should be assessed from a framework name alone. Teams should test their full serving or training path, including model loading, operators, numerical behavior, monitoring and the deployment process they will support. If a workload depends on custom kernels or a particular quantization implementation, make those a procurement gate rather than a post-purchase task.

Which GPU is better for training, inference and long contexts?

There is no defensible universal winner without a target model and a measured workload. Use B200’s scale-up fabric and CUDA system path as leading considerations for communication-heavy distributed work; use MI325X’s larger per-GPU memory as a leading consideration when model fit or long-context memory pressure is central. Then benchmark the actual deployment at the precision and configuration you intend to operate.

Large distributed training

For training that partitions work across many GPUs and communicates frequently, evaluate the complete node or rack rather than selecting on accelerator specs alone. B200 HGX and DGX systems are designed around NVLink/NVSwitch scale-up, and NVIDIA’s DGX GB200 extends the Blackwell approach to rack scale. Those properties make Blackwell a strong candidate when intra-system communication and an established CUDA path are priorities; they do not replace a workload-specific scaling test.

Memory-bound inference and long context

For inference workloads whose limiting factor is HBM capacity, MI300X’s 192 GB and particularly MI325X’s 256 GB per accelerator merit close evaluation against B200’s 180 GB. A larger per-GPU memory pool can reduce the need to divide a model across devices, which may simplify a deployment constrained by model fit. Whether that also improves latency, throughput or cost depends on the actual model and serving setup, so measure those outcomes rather than inferring them from capacity.

Peak tensor performance is not a benchmark

Vendor peak tensor figures are precision- and sometimes sparsity-specific. NVIDIA’s DGX GB200 figure of 1,440 PFLOPS is explicitly sparse FP4 tensor performance; it cannot establish that a model using another precision will achieve that rate. The comparison material does not provide a matched B200-versus-MI300X-or-MI325X application benchmark, so it cannot support a general throughput ranking for training or inference.

What does a cloud deployment path look like?

Google Cloud maps B200 to its A4 accelerator-optimized machine family. The documented A4 configuration has eight GPUs per instance, 180 GB HBM3e and 8 TB/s per GPU, with NVLink full-mesh connectivity at 1,800 GB/s. This gives teams a concrete cloud route to a B200 system without assuming they must buy a DGX appliance.

The available Google Cloud information does not establish current US hourly or committed-use pricing. Check current regional availability, instance details, quota, storage and network requirements, and the applicable pricing terms directly before budgeting. A cloud instance’s published accelerator specifications do not by themselves establish that it is available in the region or capacity window your project requires.

For either vendor, compare like operating models: a cloud instance against a cloud instance, or an OEM system against an OEM system. Include the surrounding infrastructure and support in the quote. The available figures do not establish a current purchase-price or cloud-price winner between these platforms.

How should you evaluate power, cooling, network and total cost?

Do not make a procurement decision from HBM or bandwidth alone. The relevant comparison is the verified cost and operational fit of complete configurations for the workload, including power and cooling, rack and network needs, software and support, and the number of accelerators required after testing.

  • Power and cooling: Obtain the actual system requirements for the quoted OEM or cloud configuration. The product figures here do not provide comparable system power or cooling specifications, so no relative efficiency or facility-cost conclusion is established.
  • Rack and network: Ask for the system topology and external network configuration as well as the GPU interconnect. Scale-up links within a system and networking between systems solve different deployment needs; budget and evaluate the design you intend to use.
  • Availability: Confirm delivery or cloud capacity for the required geography and time frame. Availability changes, and a product page or platform specification does not guarantee a purchasable configuration.
  • Support: Compare the support arrangement offered for the complete system, including the hardware vendor, OEM or cloud provider and software stack. DGX B200 includes NVIDIA AI Enterprise and Mission Control software; the exact support terms still need to be verified with the seller.
  • Total cost of ownership: Use current written quotes and include infrastructure, operations and the amount of usable workload delivered. No like-for-like current price data here supports a claim that either vendor is cheaper.

How can you make the decision before committing?

Run a small, representative validation on the configurations you can actually procure. This turns the choice from a comparison of vendor specifications into a decision about model fit, production compatibility and operational cost.

  1. Define the workload. Record the model, training or inference task, input and context lengths, target precision, batch or concurrency needs, and the latency or throughput objective. State whether the problem is model fit, HBM bandwidth, GPU communication, software support or some combination.
  2. Choose complete candidate systems. Compare the B200 configuration you would deploy (such as HGX B200 or DGX B200) with the specific MI300X or MI325X platform and GPU count under consideration. Include the intended cloud or OEM path rather than assuming a standalone accelerator is the final system.
  3. Check memory fit and topology. Confirm that the target model and working data fit the candidate configuration as deployed. For multi-GPU work, obtain the system topology and test whether the communication pattern scales across the GPUs available.
  4. Verify software compatibility. Pin the relevant framework and ROCm or CUDA environment, then check required operators, kernels, quantization and deployment tools. AMD ROCm support is release- and framework-dependent; the same discipline applies to the exact CUDA stack needed for the B200 workload.
  5. Run correctness tests before performance tests. Validate model loading and output behavior at the intended precision and workload settings. A fast run is not useful if it does not meet the application’s correctness requirements.
  6. Measure the production objective. Use the target model, realistic inputs and the intended system configuration. Record end-to-end training progress or inference throughput and latency rather than using a peak vendor tensor rate as a proxy.
  7. Get comparable quotes and operational requirements. Ask vendors or providers for current pricing, availability, power and cooling needs, rack and network details, and support terms for the exact configurations tested. Compare total operating fit, not accelerator prices in isolation.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose Blackwell B200/DGX B200 when CUDA ecosystem coverage, NVLink scale-up, a turnkey DGX operating model or the documented Google Cloud A4 path are decisive—and when the target workload has been validated on that software and system. Choose AMD Instinct when per-GPU HBM capacity is the priority and the exact MI300X or MI325X configuration passes software, topology and workload testing. If either platform’s required kernels, deployment availability, facility requirements or verified economics do not work, the headline memory and bandwidth figures are not enough to justify it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix B200 and MI325X accelerators in one training cluster?

The specifications cited here do not establish a supported mixed-vendor cluster design or a shared software and communication path. Treat that as a separate architecture question for your framework, scheduler, network and systems vendors; do not assume that two accelerator types can participate interchangeably in one job.

Does MI325X replace MI300X for an existing ROCm deployment?

Not automatically. AMD lists different memory capacity and bandwidth for the two accelerators, but those specifications do not establish drop-in compatibility for a particular server, ROCm release, kernel set or production image. Verify the exact system and software combination before planning a migration.

Can I infer inference tokens per second from HBM bandwidth?

No. HBM bandwidth is one hardware limit, while realized token throughput also depends on the model, precision, kernels, serving configuration and workload. Use a representative end-to-end benchmark on the system you intend to deploy.

Are B200 or Instinct accelerators ordinary consumer GPU purchases?

The evaluated products are enterprise data-center accelerators and systems sold through OEM, integrator or cloud channels. A consumer-retail listing would not establish a supported production configuration or its operational requirements.
