For a new large-model cluster, NVIDIA B200 is generally the better technical choice. It provides 180GB of HBM3e memory and up to 8TB/s of bandwidth per GPU, compared with 141GB and 4.8TB/s for H200. B200 also adds Blackwell’s FP4 path and fifth-generation NVLink. H200 can still be the smarter purchase when you already operate Hopper systems, need a 700W-class power envelope, or can obtain H200 capacity at a materially lower total-system cost. The right answer depends on model size, KV-cache demand, precision support, interconnect topology, cooling and your measured cost per token—not on peak specifications alone.
Is NVIDIA B200 better than H200?
For new infrastructure aimed at the largest training and inference workloads, B200 has the stronger specification: more memory, substantially higher memory bandwidth, newer low-precision support and a faster GPU-to-GPU fabric. H200 remains a capable Hopper accelerator and may offer better operational economics in an existing Hopper estate or a constrained data center.

The distinction matters because large language models (LLMs) are often limited by memory capacity, memory bandwidth or communication between GPUs. A GPU that cannot hold the working set forces additional model or tensor parallelism; a slower interconnect then increases synchronization overhead. Conversely, paying for B200’s capacity and power envelope is difficult to justify if your model already fits comfortably on H200 and your software stack cannot use Blackwell-specific features.
What are the key specification differences between B200 and H200?
NVIDIA’s 2025 HGX documentation lists B200 with 180GB of HBM3e and up to 8TB/s of memory bandwidth per GPU. NVIDIA’s 2024 H200 datasheet lists 141GB of HBM3e and 4.8TB/s. The figures below are vendor specifications, not a guarantee of application-level speed.

The B200 and H200 memory figures are per GPU. They should not be confused with system totals, which depend on the number of accelerators and how much memory is exposed to a single process.
How does the extra memory change large-model deployment?
Memory capacity determines whether a model and its runtime state fit on one accelerator or must be partitioned. The 39GB difference between 180GB and 141GB is large enough to change the parallelism plan for a model near the H200 limit.
Weights are only the beginning
A model’s parameter weights consume approximately two bytes each in BF16 or FP16, one byte each in 8-bit formats and roughly half a byte each in 4-bit formats, before scales, metadata and framework overhead. A 200-billion-parameter model therefore needs about 400GB just for BF16 weights, around 200GB at 8-bit, or roughly 100GB at idealized 4-bit packing. Real deployments also reserve memory for temporary activations, communication buffers, runtime fragmentation and the key-value (KV) cache used by attention.
KV cache grows with context and concurrency
During generation, each active sequence adds keys and values to the KV cache. Longer context windows, larger batches and more simultaneous users can consume more memory than the model weights themselves. B200’s 180GB gives additional headroom for those workloads, potentially allowing a larger batch or longer context before you add another GPU. The benefit is workload-specific: a short-context, low-concurrency service may not use the extra capacity.
What “can H200 run a 200B model?” really means
Yes, an H200-based system can run a 200B-class model when the model is quantized appropriately and distributed across enough GPUs. A single H200 generally cannot hold a 200B model’s full-precision weights, and even a quantized model may leave too little room for KV cache and runtime buffers. Whether it is practical depends on the model’s quantization scheme, context length, batch size, tensor-parallel layout and the number of GPUs available.

Which GPU is better for LLM training?
B200 is usually the stronger choice for a new training cluster. Its larger memory reduces the number of shards needed for large checkpoints, while fifth-generation NVLink provides more bandwidth for tensor-parallel and pipeline-parallel communication. Blackwell’s Transformer Engine also adds FP4 alongside FP8, BF16 and FP16, giving training software more precision options as frameworks mature.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →H200 remains relevant for teams that have already validated Hopper kernels, drivers and cluster management. Reusing an existing H200 or other Hopper environment can avoid migration work, qualification time and new server designs. H200’s 141GB memory is also substantial for fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation and models that are already partitioned efficiently.
Training factors that matter more than peak numbers
- Precision support: Confirm that your framework, optimizer and checkpoint format support the precision you intend to use. FP4 is not an automatic speedup if the training stack cannot execute it efficiently.
- Parallelism efficiency: Measure scaling across the exact GPU count and topology. Communication-heavy models can gain more from B200’s NVLink than models whose work is mostly local.
- Checkpoint and optimizer memory: Full training stores gradients, optimizer states and master weights in addition to parameters. Capacity planning must include all of them, not only the inference model size.
- Software qualification: Verify CUDA, framework, compiler and collective-communication versions on the target server image before committing to a cluster design.
Which GPU is better for inference?
For high-throughput or long-context inference, B200 has the more favorable hardware profile. Autoregressive decoding repeatedly moves weights and KV-cache data, so B200’s up-to-8TB/s bandwidth and 180GB capacity can help memory-bound serving. FP4 can reduce the bytes moved per parameter when the model and quality target support that format.
H200 can be the better inference choice when the service already runs on Hopper, uses FP8 or BF16 successfully and fits within 141GB per GPU. Its lower maximum power can simplify deployment in facilities where rack density or cooling is the limiting factor. A lower acquisition or rental price can also produce a better cost per generated token even when B200 delivers higher raw throughput.
Inference metrics to measure
- Time to first token: Important for interactive applications and sensitive to prompt length, prefill kernels and interconnect traffic.
- Decode throughput: Measure tokens per second at the target number of concurrent sequences and context lengths.
- Quality at each precision: Compare task accuracy and generation quality after FP4, FP8 or other quantization; a faster model that misses your quality threshold is not an improvement.
- Cost per useful token: Include host servers, power, cooling, software licensing, idle capacity and the number of GPUs required by the parallelism plan.
How much faster is B200’s interconnect?
In HGX documentation, B200 supports fifth-generation NVLink with up to 1.8TB/s of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth per GPU, while H200 uses fourth-generation NVLink with up to 900GB/s. The nominal link rate does not equal application throughput: protocol overhead, topology, collective algorithms and contention reduce delivered bandwidth.

System design determines whether the difference is visible. A model that communicates activations or gradients frequently across GPUs can benefit from B200’s faster fabric. A workload that keeps most data on each GPU and communicates infrequently may be dominated by computation or storage instead. Benchmark the complete server, including NVSwitch configuration, CPU, network adapters and software versions.
DGX B200 as a scale reference
NVIDIA’s DGX B200 system contains eight B200 GPUs, 1,440GB of total GPU memory and 14.4TB/s of aggregate NVLink bandwidth, according to the 2025 DGX B200 User Guide. NVIDIA’s 2025 HGX B200 product information quotes 144 PFLOPS of AI performance and 64TB/s of HBM3e bandwidth for an eight-GPU platform. These are platform-level vendor figures; they are not a prediction for every model or batch size.
What power and cooling do B200 and H200 require?
Power can decide the purchase before model performance does. HGX documentation lists B200 as configurable up to 1,000W per GPU, whereas H200 SXM configurations are listed up to 700W. Eight GPUs at those limits imply very different rack-level power and heat loads, before CPUs, memory, networking and storage are counted.
Questions for the facility team
- Can the rack deliver the server’s sustained electrical load, not merely a short peak?
- Is the platform designed for the required air or liquid-cooling method, and is that cooling available at the target rack density?
- Will power-delivery units, busbars and circuit protection support the selected GPU configuration?
- Does the data center have enough thermal headroom for simultaneous training jobs?
If the answer to any of these is no, an H200 deployment may be easier to install even when B200 would be faster in a benchmark. Conversely, under-sizing a B200 system to stay within a power budget can erase its performance advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs B200 worth the extra cost over H200?
There is no universal price premium in the available specifications, and purchase or rental quotes vary by server design, region, support contract and availability. Evaluate value as total cost for your workload rather than as the accelerator’s list price.

Use this break-even calculation
- Measure the throughput or latency of the complete H200 and B200 configurations at the same model, precision, context length and concurrency.
- Record how many GPUs each configuration needs to fit weights, KV cache, optimizer state or checkpoint data.
- Calculate monthly hardware, hosting, power, cooling, networking and software costs for each option.
- Divide total monthly cost by useful output, such as accepted training tokens or generated tokens that meet your quality target.
- Include migration and engineering time if moving from Hopper to Blackwell, and include the cost of under-utilized capacity during ramp-up.
B200 tends to justify a premium when its extra memory removes a GPU from the topology, when FP4 materially lowers serving cost without unacceptable quality loss, or when higher bandwidth raises utilization. H200 tends to win when existing infrastructure can be reused and the workload already fits efficiently.
Should you rent a B200 or H200 in the cloud?
Google Cloud maps B200 systems to its A4 machine family and H200 systems to A3 Ultra machine families in its 2026 GPU machine-type documentation. Availability, region, machine shape and pricing are separate questions, so confirm those details for the location and term you need.
Cloud selection checklist
- Choose the machine shape with enough GPUs and aggregate memory for your parallelism plan; do not compare hourly rates for differently sized systems.
- Check whether the provider exposes the required NVLink or NVSwitch topology rather than only a count of attached GPUs.
- Verify driver, CUDA and framework images, plus support for FP4 if that is part of the B200 business case.
- Model data-transfer, storage and checkpoint costs. A cheaper accelerator can lose its advantage if input data or checkpoints cross regions.
- Run a representative benchmark during the same reservation or on-demand pricing mode you will use in production.
How should you benchmark B200 against H200?
Use the production model and serving or training configuration, not a synthetic peak test alone. Record the exact software stack and report results with conditions so another engineer can reproduce them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Fix the model revision, tokenizer, dataset or prompt mix and quality-evaluation set.
- Test the precisions you can deploy, including BF16 or FP8 on both platforms and FP4 on B200 where the software supports it.
- Run several context lengths and concurrency levels; include the longest context and peak batch that your service promises.
- Measure time to first token, decode tokens per second, training step time, scaling efficiency and memory use.
- Repeat at one GPU and at the planned multi-GPU count to expose NVLink and collective-communication effects.
- Convert measurements into cost per accepted token or cost per training milestone using your actual power, hosting and cloud rates.
Published peak figures are useful for understanding architectural headroom, but they cannot predict every model. Kernel availability, batch size, sequence length, sparsity, data pipeline speed and interconnect topology can reverse an apparent advantage.
What are the common mistakes when choosing between B200 and H200?
- Comparing memory numbers without counting KV cache: Reserve capacity for context and concurrency, not only weights.
- Assuming FP4 is a free upgrade: Confirm framework kernels, calibration and quality on your model.
- Ignoring server-level power: A GPU specification does not include CPUs, memory, networking or cooling overhead.
- Using per-GPU bandwidth as end-to-end throughput: Validate delivered bandwidth and collective performance on the intended topology.
- Buying for a future model without a migration plan: Confirm that your orchestration, drivers and monitoring support the new platform.
- Choosing on hourly price alone: Include the number of GPUs required, utilization, storage and data-transfer costs.
Which one should you choose?
Choose B200 for a new cluster when model or KV-cache memory is close to the H200’s 141GB boundary, when your software can exploit FP4, or when high-throughput multi-GPU scaling is central to the design. Its 180GB memory, up-to-8TB/s bandwidth and fifth-generation NVLink provide more headroom for demanding workloads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does FP4 on B200 always reduce model quality?
No. Quality depends on the model, calibration method, activation handling and workload. Validate accuracy and safety on your own evaluation set; FP4 may be suitable for some serving paths but not every training or reasoning workload.
Can I install B200 GPUs in an existing H200 server?
Treat B200 as a new platform qualification rather than a drop-in replacement. Power delivery, cooling, firmware, NVLink/NVSwitch layout and chassis support must all be validated by the system vendor.
What does 1.8TB/s NVLink mean for an eight-GPU job?
It is a per-GPU link figure for the relevant HGX configuration, while DGX B200 documentation quotes 14.4TB/s as aggregate NVLink bandwidth. Application throughput will be lower and depends on topology, collectives and communication patterns.
Is H200 sufficient for fine-tuning a large language model?
Often, yes, if the chosen model, optimizer state and sequence lengths fit across the available GPUs. Parameter-efficient methods and quantization can reduce memory needs, but you should still measure peak memory during the complete fine-tuning run.
Are Google Cloud A4 and A3 Ultra interchangeable machine types?
No. A4 is the B200 family and A3 Ultra is the H200 family, with different GPU generations, memory, power and topology. Compare the specific machine shape, regional availability and current pricing rather than the family names alone.
