“Not affected by the current recall” is increasingly appearing as a sales message because shoppers are seeing a steady stream of food and consumer-product alerts. The wording can be useful, but it is not a permanent safety guarantee: it usually means that a particular product, lot, date, or store inventory was outside a specific recall when the claim was made. Consumers should verify the exact item in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Enforcement Report or, for meat, poultry, and eggs, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) records.
Why is “not affected” suddenly appearing in advertisements and stores?
Recall reassurance has become a form of retail differentiation. Instead of merely promoting a product’s price or features, sellers can point to its relationship to a live recall and tell shoppers that the item they are offering is outside the affected scope.

An NBC Select affiliate commerce article promoted a three-pack of Colgate Optic White Advanced Hydrogen Peroxide Toothpaste, saying it was absent from the FDA recall list at the time. The listed deal was 47% off and under $10 for three tubes when published on October 23, 2026. A San Diego grocery-store sign photographed on October 12 said: “Shop with confidence. The eggs we carry are not affected by the current recall.”
These messages appeared amid prominent recalls, including a Brush Buddies children’s toothpaste recall initiated by Pritam International Private Limited. Gizmodo reported that the action involved about four million tubes and carried an FDA Class II designation on October 19, 2026. The same reporting cited a summer recall involving 19 million eggs and a recent meat recall involving 1.5 million pounds.

The grocery sign’s age and exact provenance were unclear, so it should be treated as an example of the messaging trend rather than proof that every egg in that store, or every later shipment, remains outside a recall.
What products are not affected by the recall?
There is no single permanent list of “safe” products. A product is outside a recall only in relation to the recall’s defined product description, lot codes, production dates, distribution area, and current status.

| Colgate Optic White Advanced Hydrogen Peroxide Toothpaste, three-pack | NBC Select described it as absent from the FDA recall list and listed a 47% discount to under $10 for three tubes on October 23, 2026. | Exact product name, package, lot or date information, seller, stock, and the current FDA database status. |
| Eggs in a San Diego grocery store | A sign said the eggs carried by the store were not affected by the current recall. | Brand, plant or farm identifier, carton code, distribution geography, sign date, and any newer USDA or FDA notice. |
| Brush Buddies children’s toothpaste | About four million tubes were reported in an FDA Class II recall initiated by Pritam International Private Limited. | Whether a tube’s exact lot and distribution match the recall notice. |
Absence from a database search is therefore a time-bounded status check, not a universal judgment about a brand or category. A later notice can add lots, expand geography, or identify a different hazard.

How do I check a lot number before buying or using a product?
Match the physical item to the official notice rather than relying on a headline, shelf tag, or seller description.
- Record the identifiers. Write down the full product name, size, package count, UPC if shown, lot or batch code, expiration or “best by” date, and manufacturer. For eggs, also record the carton code, plant number, and sell-by date.
- Search the FDA Enforcement Report. Use the product name or company, then open the notice and compare the listed lots, dates, reason for recall, and distribution area. The FDA database is searchable, and its contents can change as notices are added or updated.
- Check USDA FSIS records for meat, poultry, and eggs. Those products can be covered by USDA notices rather than an FDA entry. Compare the establishment number, package description, lot information, and states or countries listed in the notice.
- Confirm the date. A retailer’s “unaffected” statement may have been written before a later expansion or a new recall. Recheck the official record immediately before purchase or consumption.
- Stop when identifiers match. Do not eat, use, or redistribute an item that matches the recalled lot. Follow the notice’s instructions for disposal, return, or refund.
Is this toothpaste on the FDA recall list?
The October 2026 commerce example concerned Colgate Optic White Advanced Hydrogen Peroxide Toothpaste in a three-pack, which NBC Select described as absent from the FDA recall list at publication. That statement applied to the item and database status checked then; it did not establish that every Colgate product, every package, or every future listing is unaffected.
Consumers should search the current FDA Enforcement Report using the exact product and manufacturer details. Marketplace listings can change in price, stock, seller, or package configuration, so a previous deal description should not substitute for checking the item actually delivered.

Are the eggs in this store safe?
A sign saying eggs are “not affected by the current recall” indicates the store was making a claim about its inventory in relation to a particular recall. It does not identify the farms, plants, lots, dates, or agency notice involved, and the sign photographed in San Diego had an uncertain age.
Ask the store for the carton or case identifiers and compare them with the latest USDA FSIS and FDA notices. If the code is missing, unreadable, or inconsistent with the notice, choose a different carton or contact the retailer and the relevant agency before consuming the eggs.
What does a Class II recall mean?
An FDA Class II recall is used when exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or when the probability of serious harm is remote. It is still an official recall: consumers should follow the notice and avoid products whose identifiers match.

Why are recalls becoming a stronger selling point?
USDA FSIS recorded 2,016 meat, poultry, and egg safety complaints in fiscal year 2025, compared with 1,443 in fiscal year 2024. That is a 39.7% year-over-year increase. Foreign objects accounted for 35.7% of the fiscal-year 2025 complaints, showing that recalls can involve physical hazards as well as pathogens or labeling problems.
FSIS said complaint investigations also prompted producers to take 85 voluntary actions, including reassessing HACCP plans, retraining employees, and installing new equipment. Those figures help explain why retailers may emphasize that their current inventory is outside an active recall, but they do not turn a marketing statement into an independent safety certification.

Can shoppers trust an “unaffected” claim?
Trust it as a prompt to verify, not as the final answer. A credible claim should be specific enough to identify the recall being discussed and should remain consistent with the product’s lot, date, distribution area, and the latest agency record.
- Prefer a notice that names the product, lot, date, and agency over a generic shelf sign.
- Check FDA records for FDA-regulated goods and USDA FSIS records for meat, poultry, and egg products.
- Treat price, stock, and recall status as changeable, especially for online listings.
- Do not generalize from one unaffected lot to an entire brand or product category.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I recheck a product that was previously called unaffected?
Recheck whenever you buy a new package, especially if the lot, date, seller, or store has changed. Recall notices can be expanded or updated after an initial announcement.
Where can I report a suspected food-safety problem?
For meat, poultry, or processed egg products, use USDA FSIS consumer complaint channels; for other FDA-regulated products, use the FDA’s consumer reporting system. Keep the package, receipt, and lot information if possible.
Does a recall apply to every package sold under the same brand?
Usually not. Notices commonly identify particular lots, dates, facilities, sizes, or distribution regions. The official notice controls the scope, not the brand name alone.
What should I do if a retailer will not provide a lot code?
Do not rely on a generic assurance. Ask for another package with readable identifiers or postpone the purchase until you can compare the item with an official notice.
