Nokia and Ericsson both supply carrier-grade telecom infrastructure and treat AI as a force reshaping networks, but they emphasize different parts of that shift. Nokia describes a broad portfolio spanning optical, IP, fixed and mobile infrastructure, with AI-native networks, AI-RAN and 6G among its priorities. Ericsson foregrounds mobile networks and their expansion into enterprise and mission-critical uses, while positioning connectivity and network capabilities as foundations for AI services. The company reports support a comparison of scope, strategy and disclosed activity—not a verdict on which vendor’s equipment performs better.

What is the difference between Nokia and Ericsson’s telecom strategies?

The clearest difference is one of public emphasis, not a clean division between what the companies can sell. Nokia’s reporting now groups its business into Network Infrastructure and Mobile Infrastructure. Ericsson’s cited annual report puts mobile networks at the center of its strategy and describes extending connectivity into enterprise, mission-critical networks and Fixed Wireless Access.

That framing matters because neither company is simply a maker of one kind of radio equipment. Telecom networks include radio access, transport, core software, fixed and optical infrastructure, management systems and related services. Nokia’s described portfolio explicitly spans several of those layers. Ericsson’s strategy highlights mobile-network leadership and new uses for network capabilities; the cited reporting does not provide a complete, directly comparable product-by-product catalogue.

Both vendors also describe AI in two related ways. First, networks must carry increasingly demanding AI traffic, including distributed inference and other applications that require capacity, low latency and efficient use of energy. Second, AI can be used inside the network to automate operations, optimize resources or create new capabilities. Neither framing, on its own, demonstrates a production advantage over the other supplier.

The rows describe each company’s public positioning and reported measures; they are not a performance scorecard. Portfolio breadth in a corporate report does not tell an operator whether a particular radio, core product, software release or support contract fits its network better.

What equipment do Nokia and Ericsson make?

Both companies operate in telecom infrastructure, but Nokia’s current reporting structure makes its breadth especially explicit. Ericsson’s public emphasis is more visibly centered on mobile networks and the services and sectors that can build on them. That emphasis is not evidence that Nokia lacks those areas or that Ericsson lacks other infrastructure businesses.

Nokia: network infrastructure and mobile infrastructure

Nokia’s reporting structure took effect on January 1, 2026. Network Infrastructure includes optical, IP and fixed networks. Mobile Infrastructure groups Core Software, Radio Networks and Technology Standards. Nokia describes radio access network products, microwave radio for transport, network management and associated services, as well as work on cloud-native core networks.

For a buyer, that list covers several distinct purchasing decisions. Optical and IP systems handle transport and routing; fixed access connects homes or businesses; radio networks connect mobile devices; the core manages services and sessions; and management software helps operate the environment. Nokia’s grouping explains where those activities sit in its organization, but it does not mean every operator receives one integrated package or that every item is offered in every country.

Microwave radio is relevant where operators need wireless transport between sites, while cloud-native core work reflects the shift toward software-based, distributed network functions. The practical fit still depends on spectrum, site design, cloud architecture, integration and the operator’s existing equipment. A broad catalogue can reduce the number of strategic suppliers, but it can also create a need to compare each layer on its own technical and commercial merits.

Ericsson: mobile networks and connectivity beyond the operator network

Ericsson’s 2025 annual report describes its strategic focus as leading mobile networks, while expanding into enterprise, mission-critical networks and Fixed Wireless Access. It also describes a hyperscale network platform intended to make advanced network capabilities available to customers and partners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ericsson’s framing connects the mobile network to additional use cases: connectivity and capabilities that can be offered to other sectors, rather than treating network equipment solely as radio infrastructure. Enterprise and mission-critical requirements can place different demands on reliability, security, prioritization and service levels than a consumer mobile service. The report presents these as strategic opportunities, not proof that each opportunity has reached a particular level of commercial adoption.

Fixed Wireless Access is another example of a mobile network serving a broader access role. It can use cellular infrastructure to provide broadband connectivity, but the right choice depends on spectrum, coverage, capacity and the economics of the target locations. Ericsson’s public emphasis therefore speaks to how network capabilities may be packaged and extended; it is not a complete substitute for a detailed bill of materials.

How does Nokia’s AI strategy work?

Nokia frames AI both as a workload networks must carry and as a design and operations theme for future networks. Its five announced priorities are accelerating growth in AI and cloud; leading AI-native networks and 6G; co-innovating with customers and partners; focusing capital where it differentiates; and unlocking sustainable returns.

On the workload side, Nokia says rising AI traffic will increase requirements for network capacity, latency and energy efficiency. AI services can involve large data flows between devices, edge locations, data centers and users. Even without assuming a particular architecture, the stated implication is clear: networks need to move more data, respond predictably and do so with careful energy management.

On the network-design side, AI-native networks and AI-RAN are part of Nokia’s stated direction, alongside AI-related 6G research. “AI-native” describes an ambition to make intelligence part of the network’s architecture and operation rather than adding isolated automation later. AI-RAN refers to applying AI and accelerated computing concepts within the radio access environment. The strategy documents do not provide a like-for-like benchmark showing how Nokia’s implementation compares with Ericsson’s under the same traffic, spectrum or hardware conditions.

What Nokia has disclosed about AI-RAN

Nokia’s 2025 annual report names work with NVIDIA and operator collaborations involving T-Mobile US, SoftBank, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and KDDI. These names make Nokia’s AI-RAN activity more concrete than a strategy slogan alone: the company has identified collaborators and operators associated with the work.

A collaboration can cover different stages, from research and laboratory validation to field trials or a commercial deployment. The cited disclosures do not establish which stage applies to every named organization, the scale of each activity, the equipment configuration, or the measured gains in throughput, latency, energy use or operating cost. Those details matter to a procurement team deciding whether an approach is ready for a particular network.

Nokia also links AI with cloud growth, customer and partner co-innovation, and 6G. That combination suggests an effort to align computing, transport, radio and standards work, but it should be read as a strategic plan. It is not evidence that all planned capabilities are available as finished products or that the same roadmap fits every operator.

How does Ericsson’s AI strategy differ?

Ericsson says it aims to provide the best networks for AI and extend connectivity into additional sectors. Its 2025 annual report argues that distributed AI inference and applications will increase demand for high-performance connectivity, and presents 5G—and, over time, 6G—as technologies that can support more reliable and differentiated performance.

Ericsson also points to network slicing and differentiated network capabilities as potential drivers of new business models. A slice can be understood as a logically differentiated service with its own performance or policy objectives. In practical terms, the company is presenting network performance and capabilities as things that may be tailored and offered to customers, rather than only as a general-purpose connection. The report describes an opportunity and strategic outlook; it does not establish how much revenue such models will produce or how widely a particular capability is deployed.

Ericsson’s “best networks for AI” framing also puts emphasis on the network as an enabler of applications. Distributed inference may place computing closer to users or devices, making dependable connectivity and predictable behavior more important. The report does not supply a universal technical threshold for “high performance,” so buyers would need to translate the concept into measurable service-level requirements.

The distinction from Nokia is mainly in the way each company tells the story. Nokia emphasizes AI-native infrastructure, AI-RAN collaborations and AI-related 6G work. Ericsson emphasizes networks that enable AI applications and differentiated connectivity, including expansion into enterprise and mission-critical settings. Both describe AI as relevant to the network’s future; the strategies are not mutually exclusive. An operator could evaluate Nokia’s AI-RAN work and Ericsson’s network-capability platform against the same use case rather than assuming the labels identify entirely different technologies.

What do the reported numbers say—and what can’t they prove?

The companies report different kinds of figures, so placing them in one ranking would be misleading. Nokia’s figures describe R&D investment and patent families; Ericsson’s describe market share and the number of networks it reports as live. Each is useful context for the category it measures, but none is an independent head-to-head equipment test.

Company-reported figure What it measures Qualification
37% global RAN market share outside China Ericsson’s reported RAN market position Ericsson’s 2025 report attributes the figure to Dell’Oro (2026). The geography excludes China; it is not a figure for global share including China.
206 live 5G networks in 85 countries Ericsson-reported live 5G networks and country coverage Reported by Ericsson for 2025.
55 live 5G standalone networks Ericsson-reported 5G standalone network count Reported by Ericsson for 2025.
Approximately €4.9 billion in R&D investment Nokia’s reported research and development investment Reported by Nokia for 2025.
More than 8,000 patent families declared essential to 5G standards Nokia’s reported 5G-standard-essential patent-family count Reported by Nokia for 2025.
More than 26,000 patent families Nokia’s reported patent-family total Reported by Nokia for 2025.

The figures answer different questions. Ericsson’s market-share estimate is a position measure, while its live-network counts indicate reported deployment reach. Nokia’s €4.9 billion is an input into research and development, and its patent-family counts indicate an intellectual-property footprint. A patent family can contain related filings in multiple jurisdictions; a count does not reveal licensing terms, claim scope, validity, implementation value or revenue.

Likewise, a live-network count does not describe the performance of every site in that network, and a market-share estimate depends on the methodology and geographic definition used by the cited analyst. The 37% number must remain attached to “outside China” and to Ericsson’s attribution to Dell’Oro in 2026. It should not be rewritten as worldwide share including China.

None of these measures settles reliability, energy use, throughput, latency, security, integration effort, lifecycle cost or suitability for a specific operator. They are context for scale and investment, not a substitute for acceptance tests, customer references or an independent technical evaluation.

Which is better, Nokia or Ericsson?

There is no supported overall winner in the cited evidence. A fair choice depends on an operator’s requirements and on product-level evaluation: the company reports establish strategic scope and selected activity, but do not provide a comparable independent benchmark of real-world performance.

For an operator or enterprise buyer, a useful comparison starts by making the use case concrete. The relevant questions are not simply which company has a broader-sounding AI strategy or a larger number in a corporate report, but which proposed system satisfies the required network conditions and commercial constraints.

  • Geography and spectrum: Identify the countries, spectrum bands and local deployment conditions the network must support. Radio availability, certification and propagation assumptions can vary by market.
  • Legacy requirements: Specify which existing network generations, services and equipment must continue to work during migration. A new 5G or AI capability has to coexist with the operator’s installed base and planned retirement schedule.
  • Architecture: Define the required radio, transport, core and cloud architecture, including any open-interface requirements. Clarify where workloads run, how systems are managed and which interfaces must be exposed.
  • AI workload: Describe whether the goal is to carry AI traffic, run inference near users, automate operations, optimize radio resources or pursue several objectives. Different goals imply different hardware, software and measurement plans.
  • Operations and risk: Assess security, management, integration, support obligations and the operator’s ability to run the proposed system. Ask how upgrades, incidents, data governance and supplier responsibilities will be handled.
  • Energy and sustainability: Include energy-efficiency targets alongside capacity and latency. Nokia specifically identifies energy efficiency as a pressure created by AI traffic; any claim should be tested under the buyer’s workload.
  • Economics: Compare deployment and lifecycle costs against the same scope, assumptions and service requirements. Include integration, training, software rights, maintenance and migration work rather than comparing hardware prices alone.
  • Measured results: Use trials or deployment-specific evaluations to test performance under the intended conditions. Corporate strategy statements are not substitutes for those measurements.

A disciplined request for proposal should ask both suppliers for equivalent information: supported bands and releases, transport and core dependencies, cloud requirements, interface documentation, security controls, service-level commitments, upgrade policy, expected energy profile and references relevant to the proposed geography. The buyer can then score the responses against a common baseline rather than treating a partnership announcement or market statistic as proof of fit.

Nokia CEO Justin Hotard summarized Nokia’s direction in the company’s November 2025 strategy announcement: “Nokia changed the world once by connecting people — and will again by connecting intelligence.” It is a statement of Nokia’s ambition, not an independent assessment of its position relative to Ericsson. The cited company reports do not provide a comparably relevant verbatim quotation from a named Ericsson executive, so no equivalent quotation should be inferred.

What is the evidence behind this comparison?

The company descriptions and figures above come from Nokia’s 2025 annual report and 20-F, Nokia’s Q4 and full-year 2025 report and its November 2025 strategy announcement, and Ericsson’s 2025 annual report. These are company-authored sources, which makes them appropriate for describing what each company reports and prioritizes, but not sufficient to verify comparative technical performance independently.

The reports support statements about Nokia’s January 1, 2026 reporting structure, its five strategic priorities, named AI-RAN collaborations, R&D and patent figures, and Ericsson’s stated mobile-network focus, hyperscale platform, market-share attribution and live 5G counts. They do not establish an independent, like-for-like test of Nokia and Ericsson equipment, a comparable AI-RAN performance benchmark, or a technical verdict for a particular operator deployment.

Readers should therefore separate three layers of evidence: strategic intent, disclosed activity and measured outcomes. Intent explains where each company says it is going. Disclosed activity shows named collaborations or reported deployments. Measured outcomes require defined test conditions and results that can be compared fairly. The first two layers are documented here; the third requires operator-specific trials or independent testing.

What should buyers avoid assuming?

A broad portfolio does not automatically mean lower total cost or simpler integration. A larger patent count does not automatically mean better equipment. A market-share estimate does not guarantee that the same supplier is the best fit in a particular country, band or legacy environment. Similarly, an AI label does not reveal whether a capability is commercially deployed, what data it uses, or how it changes operating costs.

Buyers should also avoid treating the named Nokia collaborations as proof of a finished, universally available AI-RAN product. The public disclosures identify NVIDIA, T-Mobile US, SoftBank, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and KDDI, but do not provide a common deployment scale or performance result for all of them. Ericsson’s 206 live 5G networks in 85 countries and 55 live 5G standalone networks are significant reported counts, yet they do not describe identical configurations or guarantee a result for a new project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an operator use Nokia and Ericsson equipment in the same network?

The company strategy reports do not establish whether particular products from the two suppliers interoperate in a specific deployment. That needs to be evaluated against the exact equipment, interfaces, software versions, integration requirements and support arrangements involved. Multi-vendor plans should include lab validation, responsibility boundaries and acceptance tests.

Are Nokia and Ericsson telecom systems products that consumers can buy for home use?

The systems discussed here are specialized infrastructure procured by telecom operators and enterprise customers, rather than ordinary consumer devices. The cited company reports do not provide a direct consumer purchasing route or consumer price list.

Does Nokia’s patent count mean it owns more valuable 5G technology than Ericsson?

A patent-family total alone does not reveal the value, licensing terms, scope or practical importance of each patent. Nokia’s reported counts therefore cannot answer a comparative question about which company’s intellectual property is more valuable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does AI-RAN mean in Nokia’s strategy?

Nokia uses AI-RAN as part of its direction for AI-native networks and 6G, linking AI and radio-access infrastructure. Its 2025 report names NVIDIA and operator collaborations involving T-Mobile US, SoftBank, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and KDDI. The disclosures do not establish one common commercial deployment or a performance comparison with Ericsson.

Is Ericsson’s 37% RAN share a worldwide figure?

No. Ericsson’s 2025 report attributes 37% global RAN market share outside China to Dell’Oro in 2026. The geographic qualifier is essential; it should not be restated as worldwide share including China.

What is the difference between Ericsson’s live 5G figures?

Ericsson reports 206 live 5G networks in 85 countries and, within its reporting, 55 live 5G standalone networks. The latter is a subset with a specific standalone architecture; neither count is a direct measure of performance, revenue or customer satisfaction.

Does more R&D spending prove Nokia has better equipment?

No. Nokia reports approximately €4.9 billion in R&D investment for 2025, but spending is an input, not a result. Equipment quality, reliability, energy use and total cost require defined tests and deployment evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which vendor is better for an AI-heavy network?

The cited reports do not support a universal winner. Define whether the requirement is carrying AI traffic, distributed inference, AI-RAN, operational automation or another use case, then compare architecture, spectrum, cloud dependencies, energy targets, security, support and measured results under the intended conditions.

Do Nokia and Ericsson offer the same telecom equipment?

They overlap in mobile network infrastructure, but their public descriptions emphasize different scopes. Nokia explicitly groups optical, IP, fixed, core, radio, standards and related services; Ericsson foregrounds mobile networks and expansion into enterprise, mission-critical networks and Fixed Wireless Access. The cited reports are not a complete side-by-side SKU catalogue.

The Bottom Line

Nokia and Ericsson both position AI as central to the next generation of networks, but they tell different strategic stories. Nokia emphasizes broad network infrastructure, AI-native networks, AI-RAN, 6G and named collaborations. Ericsson emphasizes mobile-network leadership, AI-capable connectivity, network slicing, enterprise and mission-critical expansion. Their reported figures measure different things, so neither establishes an overall winner. Choose only after matching products and trials to the operator’s spectrum, architecture, legacy, security, energy and cost requirements.
