No—you normally do not need to start a new game after a No Man’s Sky update. Install the update, load your established save, and continue. Ordinary updates and patches are intended to keep existing saves usable; installing a new version changes the game files, not automatically your character, base, inventory, or progression.
Starting a separate save is optional. It makes sense for a clean playthrough, a separate progression path, or an expedition that you deliberately want to begin from scratch. Expeditions are the main source of confusion because Hello Games can make them available both from an existing save and through a new-game flow.

Do I need to start over after a No Man’s Sky update?
No. For a normal update or patch, the default action is to update the installed game and load the save you already use. You do not need to erase that save, create a replacement character, or replay the opening sequence simply because a new version was installed.
Your established save is the continuity path: it keeps the progression you have already earned and lets you reach the updated systems with the same character. A new game is a choice, not a general update requirement. If an individual update introduces an unusual migration rule or a mode with its own entry conditions, those instructions should be treated as a specific exception and not as evidence that every save has become invalid.

This distinction matters because “new game” and “new update” describe different things. The update changes the installed software. A new game creates a separate progression path inside that software. One does not automatically imply the other.
What happens to an existing save when the game updates?
Ordinary updates are designed to add or change game systems while allowing established games to continue. Hello Games’ Waypoint documentation, for example, describes applying updated settings to “existing games” and letting players customize difficulty from the pause menu. That is evidence that a substantial system change can be used in an ongoing save rather than requiring a restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn practical terms, continuing with your existing save means:
- Progression continuity: your character’s established progress remains the basis for play.
- World and base continuity: the bases and locations you built remain part of that save’s ongoing state.
- Inventory continuity: the equipment and resources already associated with the save are not replaced merely because the game received a patch.
- Immediate access: you can enter the updated game from the point where you last stopped instead of re-earning early-game progression.
Those points describe the intended behavior of ordinary updates, not a promise that every future release can never need a special conversion. For an unusual release, read that release’s own notes. The official release log records continuing No Man’s Sky updates and patches, including the 2026 Cosmos and Forsaken releases; its update names and platform coverage are useful context, but compatibility questions should be answered by the notes for the particular update you installed.
What is the difference between continuing an old save and starting a new one?
The choice is mostly between continuity and a clean progression curve. Neither option is universally better; the right one depends on whether you want to preserve your established state or deliberately begin again.
| Choice | Continuity | Convenience | Fresh-start value | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Existing save | Preserves established base, inventory, progress, and character progression. | Lets you reach updated content immediately without re-earning earlier progression. | Low; you continue from an already developed state. | Players who want the update applied to their main character. |
| New save | Starts a separate progression path rather than carrying over the old state. | Requires early progression again. | High; useful for relearning the game or creating a clean run. | Players who want a separate playthrough or a fresh expedition start. |
Creating a new save can also keep an experimental run separate from your established character. That is a play-style decision, not a repair step. If your only reason is that an update has arrived, there is normally no need to choose the disruptive option.

When does starting a new game make sense?
A new game is worthwhile when you want a different experience from simply continuing your main save. Common reasons include a clean progression run, a separate character, or a mode whose instructions explicitly present a new-game route.
You want to relearn the game from the beginning
Returning players sometimes prefer to revisit the early sequence, rebuild their equipment, and rediscover systems in the order the game introduces them. A new save provides that structure. It also avoids changing the established state of a long-running character just to create a learning run.
You want an independent progression path
A separate save lets you make different choices without treating your main save as a sandbox. This is useful when the purpose is experimentation or when you want a self-contained playthrough with its own milestones.
A mode explicitly offers or requests a fresh start
Some special modes present a new-game route as one of their supported entry choices. Follow the mode’s instructions rather than assuming that the update itself demands a restart. If the instructions do not require a new save, continuing from an existing one remains a valid option.
How do expeditions change the answer?
Expeditions are the important caveat, but they are not a blanket exception for all updates. Hello Games’ official Omega documentation says: “Expeditions can now be started from an existing save, as well continuing to be accessible by starting a new game.” The wording explains why an expedition menu may show both paths: the player can enter from an established save, or intentionally begin a separate run.
Those routes can produce different starting conditions. An existing-save entry keeps the expedition connected to the character you chose, while a new-game entry gives you the clean-start experience associated with a separate progression path. The available choices and any special rules belong to the individual expedition, so read its on-screen instructions before selecting a route.

Worlds Part II patch notes describe starting an expedition aboard a freighter and then returning to the main menu to start a new game. That sequence illustrates the distinction: expedition access and new-game creation are gameplay flows inside the updated version, not a demand that every player discard an established save.
Should you use an existing save for an expedition?
Choose the existing save when continuity matters and you want to enter the expedition with that established character. This is the least disruptive route because it does not ask you to rebuild ordinary progression simply to see the expedition content.

Choose the new-game route when the goal is a clean expedition run, a separate character, or a deliberate reset of progression. Starting over may require you to re-earn ordinary progression, so it is best treated as a preference or mode-specific choice rather than a technical requirement.
What should you do when a new update is available?
Use this sequence unless the update’s own notes give a different instruction.
- Install the update completely. Let the game finish applying the new version before judging how your save behaves.
- Open the normal load or continue screen. Look for the established save you used before the update.
- Load that existing save first. This is the intended continuation path for an ordinary patch or content update.
- Check the update or mode instructions. If the new content is an expedition or another special flow, read whether it supports entry from an existing save, a new game, or both.
- Choose a new save only for a reason. Select it if you want a clean run, a separate progression path, or the instructions explicitly call for that route.
- Do not delete the old save just to make room for the update. A normal installation does not require replacing an established save.
This order prevents the most common misunderstanding: treating the presence of a “new game” button as proof that the old game can no longer be used. Special modes often expose both options by design.
What if the old save is not visible after updating?
A missing save is not the expected result of an ordinary update, so do not assume that starting a new game has repaired anything. First distinguish a normal mode-selection screen from a genuine save-availability problem.

| What you see | What it usually means | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| An expedition screen offers existing-save and new-game choices. | Both entry routes are supported for that expedition. | Choose based on whether you want continuity or a clean run. |
| The ordinary load screen shows your established save. | The update has left the normal continuation path available. | Load it and continue. |
| The established save is absent from the ordinary load screen. | This is not the normal consequence of installing a patch. | Confirm that the update finished, avoid overwriting the situation with an unnecessary new run, and consult the game’s official support guidance for the affected platform. |
| The update notes describe a special migration or mode rule. | The release may have an exception that does not apply to ordinary patches. | Follow the instructions for that specific release rather than general update advice. |
The key diagnostic is context. Seeing “start a new game” inside an expedition flow is normal. Losing the established save from the regular load path is a separate technical issue that needs platform- or release-specific support.
Can a No Man’s Sky update ever require a restart?
An individual release could define a special migration or mode requirement, but the supplied official guidance does not establish a general rule that updates invalidate saves. The safe interpretation is narrower: ordinary updates preserve the intended continuation path; an explicit instruction in a particular update can override that default for the affected feature.
Look for precise language in the notes. A statement that an expedition can be started as a new game describes one available route, not a requirement for everyone. Conversely, if notes explicitly say a mode must begin as a new game, that instruction applies to that mode and should not be generalized to the rest of your saves.
This is why update names alone are not enough to answer compatibility questions. The release log can show that an update exists and identify its platform coverage, while the detailed notes explain how a specific feature interacts with existing games.
Should you make a new save for the latest expedition?
Only if you want the fresh-start experience or the expedition’s instructions tell you to. If your priority is keeping your established character, enter from that save when the expedition offers the option. If your priority is a self-contained run that begins without accumulated progression, use the new-game route.
- Choose existing save: you value your current base, inventory, progress, and character continuity.
- Choose new save: you want to relearn the game, separate the expedition from your main run, or deliberately reset progression.
- Read the expedition screen: starting conditions can differ, so use the instructions shown for that expedition rather than assuming every expedition behaves identically.
After the expedition, use the menu flow described by that expedition to return to your normal game. The presence of a return-to-menu step does not mean your main save had to be replaced; it is part of managing separate gameplay flows.

What is the practical rule to remember?
Update first, load the established save, and start a new game only when you want a fresh progression path or a particular mode explicitly calls for it. That rule fits ordinary patches, major feature updates, and the expedition options documented by Hello Games without confusing optional new-game access with a mandatory restart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an expedition started from my existing save replace my main character?
Hello Games documents existing-save expedition entry as a supported route, while also supporting a separate new-game route. Because starting conditions can differ by expedition, read that expedition’s instructions before confirming the choice and use the menu flow it provides when you leave the activity.

Should I delete an old save before installing a No Man’s Sky update?
No. Installing an ordinary update is not described as requiring save deletion or replacement. Keep the established save and treat any missing-save problem as a separate technical issue rather than creating a new run immediately.
How can I tell whether a restart is a mode rule or just an optional menu choice?
Check the wording attached to the specific mode or expedition. “Can be started from a new game” indicates an option; an explicit instruction that the mode must begin anew is a requirement limited to that mode.
Do major feature updates use the same save rule as small patches?
The Waypoint documentation shows updated settings being applied to existing games, supporting continued play after substantial system changes. For any release with unusual migration language, rely on that release’s detailed notes instead of assuming either a universal restart or universal compatibility.
