For darker planets and caves, begin with the Exosuit torch: it is the direct gameplay light and works regardless of time of day. If a frost-like visor layer or other weather effect is blocking detail, lower the hazard-related screen-effect strength instead of removing environmental fog. Disable vignette, scanlines, or motion blur only when those overlays interfere with navigation. Turn off Auto Torch when automatic illumination breaks the mood, and try Minimal HUD if you prefer an unobstructed view over persistent guidance. HDR and SDR depend on your display, so compare them on your own hardware rather than applying a universal gamma value. Photo Mode fog, bloom and depth-of-field controls affect images, not your normal exploration view.

What should you change first in a dark area?
Identify whether darkness comes from the terrain itself or from an overlay covering the screen. The first problem needs light; the second needs an effect-strength or display adjustment. Changing everything at once makes it impossible to tell which control helped.

- Switch on the Exosuit torch. Hello Games describes the torch as usable regardless of time of day, and subsequent updates improved its light and its behavior around fog and particles. See the Forsaken update notes and Cosmos update notes.
- If a visor-like frost or flash hides detail, adjust hazard-screen effects. Lower their strength before changing environmental graphics. This reduces the screen treatment; it does not promise to remove physical weather, planetary fog or darkness.
- Remove only overlays that obstruct you. Try vignette, scanlines and motion blur separately, then stop when edges and movement are readable without flattening the scene.
- Choose automatic or deliberate light. Keep Auto Torch for convenience, or disable it and activate the torch only when you decide a scene needs illumination.
- Evaluate the HUD and display mode last. Minimal HUD and HDR/SDR changes affect the information and output you see, not the underlying terrain lighting.
How does the Exosuit torch improve visibility?
The torch is the direct in-game lighting tool for exploration. It is useful in caves, on unlit surfaces and during planetary night, and its operation is independent of the local time of day. Updates have also refined the torch beam and its interaction with volumetric fog and particles, so keeping some environmental atmosphere does not mean accepting an unusable black screen.
Use the torch when terrain geometry, resource nodes or cave entrances disappear into darkness. A beam can reveal the immediate path while leaving distant fog, glowing flora and colored skies intact. That balance is generally better for atmosphere than raising every brightness-related control or stripping the environment of effects.

How can you reduce frost and other hazard-screen effects?
Hazard-related screen effects are presentation layers tied to conditions such as visor frosting. The Fractal update added a strength control for these effects and an option to replace white flashes with fades to black. Lowering the strength can restore detail when the screen treatment, rather than the landscape, is the obstruction. The Fractal update notes document these additions.
Do not confuse this control with a weather-clearance switch. A planet can still have snow, dust, fog or other environmental effects after the visor treatment is reduced. If the world remains genuinely misty, use the torch and adjust your route or viewpoint instead of expecting the hazard slider to erase the atmosphere.

Which overlays are worth disabling?
Vignette, scanlines and motion blur are separate from environmental fog. Disable them one at a time when they make edges, landmarks or movement harder to read; leave them enabled when their visual style contributes to the scene you want.
Vignette
Vignette darkens the outer portion of the image. Removing it can make peripheral terrain easier to inspect, especially in a narrow cave, but it also removes a cinematic frame around the view.
Scanlines
Scanlines add a display-like pattern over the picture. Turning them off produces a cleaner image and avoids mistaking the pattern for texture or weather.
Motion blur
Motion blur softens the image while turning or moving. A lower setting generally favors edge clarity, but the available controls and menu location depend on the current build. Foundation-era documentation places a motion-blur control in display options; later updates reorganized PC menus, so an old path may not match your screen.

These effects are independent experiments. Disabling one does not automatically change fog density, torch brightness or hazard protection. Preserve the effects that create the mood and remove only the layer that blocks your reading of the scene.
Should you turn off Auto Torch?
Turn Auto Torch off when automatic illumination repeatedly breaks a dark composition or turns on when you would rather preserve the natural light. Leave it on when convenience matters more than control, particularly during routine travel.
Hello Games introduced the feature with the statement: “A toggle has been added to the General Options menu to disable Auto Torch.” The toggle was documented in the Living Ship Patch 2.32 notes dated February 27, 2020. Because options were subsequently reorganized, look under the current General Options or controls pages rather than relying on an identical menu path from an older guide.
With Auto Torch disabled, the torch becomes a deliberate tool: keep the scene dark for screenshots or navigation by starlight, then switch the beam on for a specific ledge, resource or doorway. This setting changes when the light appears; it does not alter planetary lighting or remove fog.

Does Minimal HUD make dark exploration easier?
Minimal HUD reduces persistent interface information, which can make a dark scene easier to read. The trade-off is that it also hides guidance that helps with survival and navigation.
The Forsaken update’s Minimal HUD option reduces the compass, hazard-protection bars, mission notifications and nonessential markers. Read the Forsaken 7.10 notes for the feature description. Compare normal and Minimal HUD in the same location before adopting it: a cleaner view can be valuable for experienced explorers, while a new player may need the protection and mission cues visible.

Minimal HUD does not brighten terrain, strengthen the torch or reduce weather. It changes how much of the screen is occupied by interface elements, so treat it as a composition and information choice rather than a lighting fix.
How should HDR and SDR be compared?
There is no gamma number that is correct for every PC, console and display. Fractal revised HDR rendering, and later Cosmos notes describe additional HDR color-space and clipping fixes, but those updates do not establish a universal brightness preset.
- Confirm that the display is genuinely HDR-capable and that HDR is enabled in the operating system or console display settings.
- Use the same dark location in HDR and SDR, with the same in-game settings and room lighting.
- Check whether shadow detail, bright stars and colored fog remain distinguishable in both modes.
- Keep the mode that preserves detail without crushing blacks or washing out highlights on your particular screen.
On supported Windows systems, content-adaptive brightness can change luminance between dark and bright scenes. If the image visibly shifts while the game settings remain unchanged, inspect Windows display behavior before treating the game as the cause. The game’s options were reorganized in Fractal, so instructions that refer to an old gamma or display-menu location may be stale. An early Foundation note about a gamma bug is not evidence of a currently exposed slider or a recommended value.
How do you preserve atmosphere while improving clarity?
Use a selective approach rather than setting every effect to minimum. Hello Games has described volumetric lights, glowing cave flora and improved torch visuals as parts of the game’s atmosphere; Cosmos specifically improved how torch spotlights interact with fog and particles. Keep those environmental elements when they contribute to the mood, and change overlays or lighting behavior that prevent you from navigating.
| Your priority | Start with | Accept the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Find a safe route through a black cave | Exosuit torch, then hazard-effect strength if a visor layer obscures the view | The beam changes the immediate composition |
| Keep a cinematic night scene | Disable Auto Torch; retain fog, volumetric lights and selected screen styling | You must activate the torch manually when detail is needed |
| Read edges while turning | Lower or disable motion blur; test vignette separately | Movement may look less stylized |
| Remove interface clutter | Minimal HUD | Compass, protection and mission information become less persistent |
| Get consistent output from a television or monitor | Compare HDR and SDR on that display | The preferred mode can differ from another screen |
Hello Games suggests trying lower resolutions when PC frame rate is poor, but the available sources provide no measured visibility gain or universal graphics preset. Do not treat a lower resolution as a proven lighting solution.
Why Photo Mode settings do not fix live gameplay fog
Photo Mode is a separate image-composition tool. Origins documents controls for fog, cloud density, vignette, filters and depth of field, while Prisms added manual bloom control and revised depth-of-field behavior. Those controls are appropriate when composing a screenshot, not when walking or flying through the world.

Lowering Photo Mode fog will not permanently clear the fog encountered during exploration. Do not assume a particular time-of-day value, fog slider position or bloom setting carries across platforms or into live gameplay. The Origins update notes describe the photo controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes with the October 2026 patch situation?
Availability is platform-specific. Hello Games’ October 29, 2026 Forsaken 7.11 post said the patch was live on Steam and would reach other platforms later at the stated research time of October 30, 2026, 06:37 UTC. Check your platform’s installed version before assuming a newly documented menu or HUD option is present; see the Forsaken 7.11 announcement.
PC options were reorganized in Fractal, and console layouts can differ. If an instruction sends you to a heading that is missing, search the current General Options, Display, Controls or HUD categories rather than forcing an old path. The feature may have moved, been renamed or not yet arrived on that platform.
What should you do when the problem is a serious graphical fault?
First decide whether the scene is intentionally dark or the game is malfunctioning. Missing textures, severe flicker, corrupted lighting or a sudden display failure require a different diagnosis from a normal nighttime planet.
- Disable mods while diagnosing severe PC graphics or performance problems, following Hello Games’ support guidance.
- Check Windows adaptive-brightness behavior on supported displays if luminance changes with scene content.
- Recheck the game version and platform rollout before concluding that an option is missing.
- Restore one changed setting at a time if the image becomes excessively flat, bright or cluttered.
These steps do not explain every incident, and they are not substitutes for platform-specific support when the game remains visibly corrupted.
How we selected these settings
The choices above are based on what each control actually changes: direct illumination, hazard overlays, screen styling, automatic-light behavior, interface density, display output or screenshot composition. Official Hello Games update notes establish the feature introductions and later rendering changes. No consulted source provides a controlled percentage showing how much any setting improves visibility or atmosphere, so the article does not assign performance scores or brightness gains.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make caves brighter without changing the planet’s weather?
Yes. Use the Exosuit torch for local illumination and leave environmental fog, clouds and weather untouched. If a visor treatment is the obstruction, reduce its hazard-screen strength rather than changing world effects.
Will disabling motion blur increase my frame rate?
The cited material does not provide a measured frame-rate gain from changing motion blur. Treat it as a clarity preference, and use the game’s broader performance guidance if your PC is struggling.

Menu categories were reorganized after the feature was introduced. Check the current General Options or controls pages and verify that your platform has received the relevant update.
Is HDR required for dark exploration in No Man’s Sky?
No. SDR remains a valid output mode; HDR is worthwhile only when your display and system handle it well. Compare the same scene in both modes because shadow and highlight rendering varies by screen.
Do Photo Mode fog changes carry into normal play?
No. Photo Mode adjustments are for composing an image and are separate from live exploration rendering. Changing a screenshot’s fog or bloom does not clear the world while you travel.
