A third-party GameGPU report says No Man’s Sky reached approximately 72 frames per second at 1,728×1,728 pixels per eye on Steam Frame-class ARM64 hardware. The reported setup used a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, Adreno 750 graphics and Mesa Turnip. However, the result is an experimental benchmark, not an official Valve or Hello Games compatibility certification. GameGPU reported a crash after roughly 10–15 seconds with Valve’s VulkanValve RPO layer enabled, while a separate GE-Proton report describes the game aborting during startup on ARM64 SteamOS. Until those failures are resolved, PC streaming remains the dependable way to play No Man’s Sky VR through Steam Frame.
Does No Man’s Sky really run at 72 FPS on Steam Frame?
It reportedly can under one experimental configuration, but the figure should not be treated as a guaranteed or sustained result. GameGPU’s October 25, 2026 report, based on surfaced public bug-report data, recorded about 72 FPS at 1,728×1,728 pixels per eye. The report does not publish a reproducible test protocol, game scene, graphics preset, frame-time graph or independent capture, so the number cannot establish consistent performance across the full game.

The same report is explicit that this is not an official Valve compatibility announcement. A crash after approximately 10–15 seconds was reported when Valve’s VulkanValve RPO layer was active. With that layer disabled, GameGPU said the configuration ran for more than four minutes, which indicates progress but not proof of a complete play session.
What hardware and software produced the result?
The reported test used the following combination:
| Component | Reported configuration | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| System-on-chip | Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | ARM64 mobile-class processor used by the headset platform |
| GPU | Adreno 750 | Integrated graphics running through the Mesa Turnip driver |
| Render target | 1,728×1,728 pixels per eye | The per-eye resolution associated with the 72-FPS report |
| Compatibility path | ARM64 SteamOS with Proton-related translation and Vulkan components | The exact layer and runtime combination materially affects stability |
Valve’s published Steam Frame specifications list a 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, ARM64 architecture, 16 GB of LPDDR5X memory, 256 GB or 1 TB of storage, and 2,160×2,160 LCD panels per eye. Listed refresh rates are 72–144 Hz, with 144 Hz marked experimental. The benchmark’s 1,728×1,728 render resolution is therefore lower than the panel’s native specification.

Why is stability more important than the 72-FPS headline?
Virtual-reality play depends on a continuous stream of correctly timed frames. A high counter reading that ends in a crash, abort or severe frame-time spike is not equivalent to a playable session. In this case, the failure modes are documented by two separate reports:
- GameGPU reported a crash after roughly 10–15 seconds with the VulkanValve RPO layer enabled.
- A GE-Proton issue for ARM64 SteamOS records No Man’s Sky VR aborting during startup in GE-Proton 11-11, at about 10 seconds.
- GameGPU reported more than four minutes of operation after disabling the layer, but supplied no evidence of a complete mission, extended exploration or stable frame pacing.
Those observations point to an unresolved compatibility problem in the software path, not a simple lack of GPU speed. Proton, FEX translation, SteamVR, Vulkan drivers and optional layers can each change whether the game launches and remains running.

Can Steam Frame run No Man’s Sky VR standalone?
Steam Frame is designed as a streaming-first wireless headset, according to Valve’s product description. Valve’s Steamworks documentation also describes several execution models: Windows games can run through Proton, x86 code can be translated through FEX, and developers can provide native ARM64 or Android builds. That flexibility makes an ARM64 attempt possible, but it does not make every Windows VR title compatible.
For No Man’s Sky, the evidence currently supports an experimental standalone path rather than a supported one. Hello Games officially supports No Man’s Sky in VR, including SteamVR motion controllers such as Oculus Touch, Valve Index and Vive Wand. Its Beyond documentation and Vulkan update establish general PC VR support, not a native ARM64 Steam Frame build or a fixed 72-FPS target.

Do you need a gaming PC to play No Man’s Sky VR on Steam Frame?
A gaming PC is the practical option while standalone ARM64 support remains unstable. Steam Frame’s streaming-first design lets a compatible PC render the game and send the frames to the headset, avoiding the experimental Snapdragon, Proton and Vulkan combination described above.
Standalone execution could eventually remove the need for a PC, but buyers should wait for a Valve, Hello Games or reproducible community report that demonstrates sustained play rather than a short benchmark window. When comparing the two approaches, check the following:

Did the Cosmos update add foveated rendering for PC VR?
Not according to the contemporaneous correction. UploadVR reported on September 9 that Cosmos notes listed eye-tracked dynamic foveated rendering for SteamVR, then corrected the story on September 11 after XR commentator Brad Lynch said, “No Man’s Sky foveated rendering on PCVR isn’t actually released yet.” UploadVR explained that the notes had been added early and that the feature was planned for a later patch.
Therefore, do not assume that foveated rendering shipped with Cosmos or that it explains the reported 72-FPS figure. A newer official patch note would be needed to establish release status.

What should prospective Steam Frame owners conclude?
The 72-FPS result is useful evidence that No Man’s Sky can be made to render on ARM64 Steam Frame hardware under specific conditions. It is not evidence of a certified, stable standalone version. The immediate decision is straightforward: use PC streaming for dependable play, and treat local execution as an experimental project until the launch aborts and Vulkan-layer crashes are resolved and sustained gameplay is demonstrated.
Frequently Asked Questions
What refresh rates does Steam Frame support?
Valve lists 72 Hz through 144 Hz for Steam Frame, with 144 Hz identified as experimental. A game producing roughly 72 FPS does not automatically provide the headroom needed for higher refresh modes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Which controllers are supported by No Man’s Sky VR?
Hello Games’ Beyond documentation names SteamVR motion-controller support for Oculus Touch, Valve Index and Vive Wand. Actual behavior on Steam Frame still depends on the headset’s runtime and input mapping.
Is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 version a native Android game build?
The report describes an ARM64 SteamOS compatibility path using Proton-related components and Mesa Turnip, not a confirmed native Android release. Valve documents native ARM64 and Android as possible execution models, but No Man’s Sky has not been identified here as using either one natively.
Where can I get Steam Frame right now?
Valve’s product information describes reservations and a waitlist rather than ordinary retail availability. Check Valve’s current reservation page for your region because stock, timing and final specifications can change.
