To update Nintendo Switch Sports, connect the console to the internet, highlight the game on the HOME Menu without opening it, press + or −, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet. As of October 30, 2026, Nintendo lists version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, as the latest update for the original game. After installation, open the same Options screen and read the number shown beneath the software title to verify what is installed.
This guide also separates the game update from Nintendo Switch system firmware, explains why Nintendo Switch Sports Resort has a different version number, and covers storage, membership, automatic updates and controller issues that can make the process confusing.

You can read the installed version from the HOME Menu; you do not need to launch the game. Nintendo’s instructions state that “The current version number will display under the software title.”
- Press the HOME button to open the HOME Menu.
- Highlight the Nintendo Switch Sports icon. Do not start the game.
- Press the + or − button on a controller.
- Look beneath the software title in the Options screen. The number shown there is the version installed on that console.
For the original game, the current Nintendo-listed target is 1.5.0. Nintendo’s version history gives that update a release date of July 9, 2024. Version histories can change, so use the game-specific support page as the authority when checking again after this article was published: Nintendo Switch Sports update information and instructions.

How do I update Nintendo Switch Sports over the internet?
The manual procedure is the same basic process on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model and Nintendo Switch 2 systems covered by Nintendo’s game-update instructions. The console must be connected to the internet before the download can begin.
- Connect to the internet. On the HOME Menu, confirm that the console has an active Wi-Fi or wired connection appropriate to your model. The “Via the Internet” command cannot work offline.
- Highlight the correct game. Select the icon titled Nintendo Switch Sports, not another title with “Sports” in its name. Leave the game closed.
- Open Options. Press + or − while the icon is highlighted.
- Record the starting number. Read the version beneath the software title. This gives you a before-and-after reference if the console downloads an update.
- Choose the game-update command. Select Software Update, then choose Via the Internet.
- Let the download and installation finish. Keep the console powered and connected until the operation completes. If the system asks you to close software or restart, follow the on-screen instruction.
- Check the number again. Return to the same HOME Menu Options screen and compare the displayed number with Nintendo’s current version history. Nintendo’s listed target at the October 30, 2026 check was version 1.5.0.
The second reading is the practical confirmation: it verifies the number actually installed rather than assuming that selecting the update command completed successfully. It is normal for a future update to make a number higher than 1.5.0, so do not treat 1.5.0 as a permanent ceiling.

Before selecting the update command, confirm three things: the highlighted icon says Nintendo Switch Sports, the console is online, and enough internal or microSD storage is available. Reading the version first is useful when troubleshooting because it shows whether the number changes after the download. If the console is offline, the version display still works, but the Internet option cannot retrieve a patch.
Manual updating versus automatic updating
Manual updating gives you a clear point-in-time check. You choose the game, start Software Update > Via the Internet, wait for completion and read the number again. It is the better choice when you want to confirm a particular release or diagnose a mismatch.
Automatic updating is more convenient but does not replace verification. For original Switch-family consoles, Nintendo documents System Settings > System > Auto-Update Software > On. While the console is online, installed software updates can download automatically, and an available update may prompt when you start a game online. Because the automatic process may happen without you watching it, reopen the game’s Options screen if the exact installed version matters.
| Approach | Control | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Start the game update from its HOME Menu Options screen | Immediate installation and a before-and-after version check |
| Automatic | Enable Auto-Update Software and keep the console online | Convenience when you do not need to supervise the download |
The automatic-setting instructions cited here are for the original Switch family. The game-update page also covers Nintendo Switch 2, but menu behavior can vary by hardware generation, so follow the labels shown on your console.

What does version 1.5.0 add?
Nintendo’s notes identify version 1.5.0 as the update that added Basketball to Play Globally, Play Locally and Play with Friends. The same update included gameplay fixes. The notes describe a game update, not a console-firmware update.
| Version | Release date listed by Nintendo | Highlighted change |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5.0 | July 9, 2024 | Basketball added to Play Globally, Play Locally and Play with Friends; gameplay fixes |
| 1.4.0 | Not stated in the cited update notes | Reissued items added |
| 1.3.0 | Not stated in the cited update notes | Golf added |
The release date in the table identifies when each game update was released; it is not the publication date of Nintendo’s support page and does not guarantee that no later patch will appear.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to download the update?
No. Nintendo distinguishes the internet connection used to download the software update from the Nintendo Switch Online membership used for online game features. You can perform the update procedure without an active membership, provided the console can reach the internet.
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the game’s online features. Nintendo’s FAQ also says that a player without an active membership may be offered a trial against computer-controlled opponents when selecting Play Globally. That trial behavior concerns access to online play, not whether the patch can be installed.

Nintendo also says that save data remains available after downloading the update. The update process is therefore not a save-data deletion step, although you should avoid powering off during installation.
How do automatic updates work?
Automatic updating can download installed-software updates while the console is online, but it gives you less immediate confirmation than reading the version number yourself. Nintendo documents the following setting for original Switch-family consoles:
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll to System.
- Set Auto-Update Software to On.
Nintendo says installed software updates download automatically while the console is connected. An available update can also prompt when you start a game online. If you need certainty about the result, use the manual version check described earlier; automatic updating and version verification are separate actions. Nintendo’s general instructions are available at Nintendo Support’s automatic software-update guidance.
The cited automatic-update instructions are for the original Switch-family systems. Nintendo’s game-specific page covers Nintendo Switch 2 as well, but do not assume that every system-setting path or behavior is identical across hardware generations; use the menus shown on your console.
What is the difference between the game version and the console system version?
Nintendo Switch Sports version identifies the game files. System version identifies the operating software running the console. Updating one does not automatically mean you updated the other.
| What you are updating | Where to start | What number you check |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Sports | HOME Menu > highlight the game > + or − > Software Update > Via the Internet | Number beneath the game title, currently listed as 1.5.0 for the original game (checked October 30, 2026) |
| Console system software | HOME > System Settings > System > System Update | The console’s system-version entry, not the game’s number |
If you open System Settings > System > System Update, you are checking firmware, not requesting a Nintendo Switch Sports patch. Nintendo’s system-update instructions are separate from its game-update instructions: Nintendo Support system-update information.

Why does another “Sports” title show a different version?
Nintendo Switch Sports and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort are different games. Nintendo lists an October 21, 2026 update numbered 1.1.0 for Sports Resort; that number does not replace version 1.5.0 for the original Nintendo Switch Sports.
Before comparing numbers, read the title displayed under the HOME Menu icon and match it to the heading on Nintendo’s update page. A number from Sports Resort, a demo or another software title cannot verify the installation of the original game.

What should I do if the update will not install?
Most failures fall into a small number of categories. Work through the applicable branch instead of switching to the console-firmware menu.
The console reports insufficient storage
Nintendo instructs you to free or expand system or microSD storage before retrying when there is not enough space. First remove or archive software you no longer need, then repeat Software Update > Via the Internet. On original Switch-family systems, a compatible microSDXC card is a documented expansion option; compatibility and setup depend on the console model. The storage recommendation is conditional on a space shortage, not a requirement for every update and not an automatic recommendation for Nintendo Switch 2.
Do not infer a required card size or download size from the version number: Nintendo’s cited material does not specify either. Freeing existing space is the simplest first step, and you can check the game version again after retrying.
The internet connection is unavailable
The manual procedure requires an internet connection. Re-establish the console’s network connection, then return to the game’s Options screen and run Via the Internet again. If the console is offline, you can still read the locally displayed installed version, but you cannot use that command to obtain a new patch.
You opened the wrong update screen
Use the game icon’s Options menu for Nintendo Switch Sports. System Settings > System > System Update is for console firmware. Starting the game and waiting for an in-game prompt is also not a substitute for checking the version number beneath the HOME Menu software title.
The displayed number does not match the number you expected
Check the title first. If it is the original Nintendo Switch Sports, run the manual check again and compare the result with Nintendo’s current update history rather than relying on an old list or a number copied from Sports Resort. Nintendo may publish a newer patch after the 1.5.0 entry used here.

You are trying to use a controller feature that is unrelated to updating
Controller compatibility does not determine whether the software patch can download. Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode or Pro Controllers, and that Joy-Con 2 will not fit the Leg Strap. Those limitations affect how you play, not the update menu.
Does the physical edition include the Leg Strap?
If you are buying the game rather than updating an existing copy, Nintendo identifies the physical edition as including the Leg Strap accessory for Soccer. Product details are on Nintendo’s store page: Nintendo Switch Sports physical edition.
A digital owner who wants the supported Soccer control can obtain a separate Nintendo Leg Strap. Nintendo identifies the left Joy-Con as a separate compatible component and states that Joy-Con 2 will not fit the strap. These are purchase and play-setup considerations; neither a strap nor an additional Joy-Con fixes a failed software update.
The physical and digital choices do not change the HOME Menu update path. A physical-card owner should highlight the installed game icon, while a digital owner uses the downloaded game icon; in both cases, the version appears beneath the title and the same Software Update command is used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I verify the update without relying on an online membership?
Use the HOME Menu number. Highlight the game, press + or −, and read the version beneath the title; this check does not require entering an online match. Membership matters when you use online game features, while the version display is a local software detail.
For a reliable record, note the number before starting the update, complete the download, then reopen the same Options screen and note the number afterward. Keep the game title visible in your notes so that a later check cannot confuse the original game with Sports Resort.

- Write down the exact title shown on the HOME Menu.
- Record the version number before the update.
- Use the game’s Software Update > Via the Internet path, not the system-firmware path.
- Wait for installation to finish before closing or powering down the console.
- Read the number beneath the title again and compare it with Nintendo’s latest history.
- If storage caused the failure, free space before considering a compatible microSDXC expansion on an original Switch-family console.
Following those checks distinguishes an uninstalled patch, a full storage device, an offline console, a firmware update and a different game—five problems that can otherwise look like the same “version mismatch.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check Nintendo Switch Sports’ version while the console is offline?
Yes. The installed number is displayed locally beneath the game title in the HOME Menu Options screen. Offline mode only prevents the console from downloading a new update through “Via the Internet.”

Will updating Nintendo Switch Sports remove my save data?
Nintendo says save data remains available after the update is downloaded. The normal precaution is to leave the console powered and let installation finish rather than interrupting it.
Does Nintendo Switch Lite support this update procedure?
Nintendo’s game-specific instructions cover Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model and Nintendo Switch 2. The HOME Menu Options path remains the relevant place to check the game version on those supported systems.
Why is my console asking for a membership when I select Play Globally?
Nintendo Switch Online is required for online game features, so a non-member can be shown a trial against computer opponents instead. That membership prompt is separate from downloading the game update.
What is the latest version of the original Nintendo Switch Sports?
Nintendo lists version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, as the latest version for the original game at the October 30, 2026 check. Recheck Nintendo’s version history for any later release.
Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort version 1.1.0 the same update?
No. Sports Resort is a different title. Nintendo lists its October 21, 2026 update as 1.1.0, which does not replace 1.5.0 for the original Nintendo Switch Sports.
Do I need to update the console system software first?
The game update uses the game icon’s Options menu and Software Update path. Console firmware uses HOME > System Settings > System > System Update; the two version numbers identify different software.

First free existing space. If an original Switch-family console still needs expansion, Nintendo documents compatible microSDXC storage as an option. Storage is not automatically required, and this guidance is not a blanket recommendation for Switch 2.
Can I use a Pro Controller or Handheld Mode with Nintendo Switch Sports?
Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode or Pro Controllers. It also says Joy-Con 2 will not fit the Leg Strap. These controller limits are separate from downloading or verifying the update.
The Bottom Line
For the original Nintendo Switch Sports, highlight the game on the HOME Menu, press + or −, choose Software Update > Via the Internet, and read the number beneath the title again when installation finishes. Nintendo listed version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, on October 30, 2026.
