Yes. Nintendo Switch Sports supports offline multiplayer on one Nintendo Switch, and several sports work with a single Joy-Con. Bowling and Golf are the most flexible, allowing up to four players to share one Joy-Con. Tennis, Chambara, Badminton, Volleyball and Basketball require one Joy-Con for each active player, while Soccer requires two Joy-Cons per player. Offline play does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it does require a television or tabletop setup with detached controllers: Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode, and Nintendo Switch Lite cannot run the software.
Can you play Nintendo Switch Sports offline?
Yes. Start the game on a standard Nintendo Switch and select the nearby-player option when you want to play without internet communication. One console supports between one and four local players, depending on the sport. A solo player can also play locally against computer-controlled opponents.

What “offline” includes
- One to four people playing on one Nintendo Switch, with the maximum set by the sport.
- Solo sessions in which the game supplies a computer opponent.
- No Nintendo Switch Online membership for the documented one-console local mode.
- TV or tabletop play with detached Joy-Cons.
What “offline” does not include
- Local wireless play between two Nintendo Switch consoles. Nintendo explicitly says Nintendo Switch Sports does not support local communication play.
- Handheld play with the controllers attached to the console.
- Playing the software on Nintendo Switch Lite, which Nintendo Japan lists as unsupported.
Can you play Nintendo Switch Sports without Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes, when all players are sharing one console in the nearby-player mode. Nintendo’s requirement is specific: an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. It is not required simply to launch an offline local match.

Online and local play are separate paths in the game. If you choose an online competition, global matchmaking or an online friends session, the account used for that online service needs Nintendo Switch Online. If you choose nearby players, the game keeps the session on the console and does not need that membership.
Which Nintendo Switch Sports games work with one Joy-Con?
It depends on the sport and the number of people playing. Bowling and Golf can use one Joy-Con for as many as four local players. Most of the other sports use one Joy-Con per player, and Soccer uses two per player.
| Sport | Controller requirement | What one Joy-Con means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Bowling | One Joy-Con can support up to four players. | One shared controller is enough for a four-player turn-based session. |
| Golf | One Joy-Con can support up to four players. | One shared controller is enough for a four-player session. |
| Tennis | One Joy-Con per player. | Two active players need two Joy-Cons; four need four. |
| Chambara | One Joy-Con per player. | Standard play uses one controller each. Twin Swords requires one left-right Joy-Con set per player. |
| Badminton | One Joy-Con per player. | Each active player needs an individual controller. |
| Volleyball | One Joy-Con per player. | Four-player play requires four Joy-Cons. |
| Basketball | One Joy-Con per player. | Four-player play requires four Joy-Cons. |
| Soccer | Two Joy-Cons per player. | A single controller cannot support a Soccer player; two are needed for each participant. |
The “one Joy-Con” wording therefore does not mean that every sport is playable with only one controller. It means that the controller requirement varies by sport. For a group sharing one controller, Bowling and Golf are the dependable choices. For motion sports in which everyone acts at the same time, plan on one Joy-Con per player unless you are playing Soccer, which needs two.
The Chambara Twin Swords exception
Chambara’s Twin Swords option is more demanding than its ordinary one-sword setup. Each player needs a left-right Joy-Con pair, not just one Joy-Con. If you have only one controller, choose the standard Chambara configuration instead.
Soccer and the Leg Strap
Soccer already requires two Joy-Cons per player. Its Shootout mode also uses the Leg Strap. The strap is specific to that mode; it is not a general requirement for offline play, Bowling, Golf or the other sports.

How do you start an offline local match?
Before starting, put the Switch in TV or tabletop mode, detach the Joy-Cons and make sure each player has the controller arrangement required by the sport. A stable screen position and enough room for arm movement are practical necessities for motion-controlled play.

- Power on the Nintendo Switch and launch Nintendo Switch Sports. Use a standard Nintendo Switch console; Nintendo Switch Lite is not supported.
- Detach and pair the Joy-Cons. For Bowling or Golf, one Joy-Con can be passed between players. For sports that run simultaneously, pair one controller per player; for Soccer, pair two per player.
- Choose the nearby-player or local option. Select the mode intended for people playing together on that console, rather than an online option.
- Select a sport and its local rules. The game will apply that sport’s player limit and controller requirement. If the selected mode requests more controllers, add them before continuing.
- Calibrate and position the controllers. Follow any on-screen wrist-strap or motion prompts, keep players clear of furniture and other people, and hold the Joy-Con as instructed.
- Start the match. A solo local session uses a computer opponent; a group session rotates or assigns turns according to the selected sport.
If the nearby-player option is unavailable, check that the console is not in Handheld Mode and that the Joy-Cons are detached. The game’s support information is explicit that Handheld Mode is not supported.
Can two Switch consoles play Nintendo Switch Sports together locally?
No. Nintendo distinguishes nearby-player play from local communication play and says the game does not support local communication between separate consoles. Two consoles in the same room cannot be linked for an offline match through the Switch’s local-wireless feature.
The supported offline arrangement is therefore one console, one screen and the required number of detached Joy-Cons. If two households want to play from separate consoles, they must use an online mode, which brings the Nintendo Switch Online requirement back into play.
Does Nintendo Switch Sports work in handheld mode or on Switch Lite?
No. Nintendo’s support wording is direct: “Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.” The product information lists TV and tabletop modes instead, reflecting the game’s reliance on motion-controlled Joy-Cons.

Nintendo Japan’s product information also says the software cannot be played on Nintendo Switch Lite. The Lite has permanently attached controls and is not a supported platform for this title, so buying extra accessories does not change that compatibility limit.
How many controllers do common group setups need?
Use the sport, not the number of people alone, to plan your controllers. These examples translate Nintendo’s per-sport specifications into practical setups.
- One person with one Joy-Con: Bowling, Golf, Tennis, Chambara, Badminton, Volleyball and Basketball are listed as compatible with that sport’s one-controller-per-player arrangement. Soccer is not, because it needs two.
- Four people with one Joy-Con total: Choose Bowling or Golf, where Nintendo lists one Joy-Con for up to four players.
- Two people playing Tennis, Badminton or standard Chambara: Bring two Joy-Cons, one for each player.
- Four people playing Tennis, Volleyball or Basketball: Bring four Joy-Cons.
- Two people playing Soccer: Bring four Joy-Cons, two for each player. Add the Leg Strap if the chosen mode is Shootout.
- Two people choosing Chambara Twin Swords: Bring two complete left-right Joy-Con sets, one pair per player.
Controllers can be shared between turns in sports that support turn-based play, but sharing does not reduce the simultaneous requirement. For example, four Tennis players still need four Joy-Cons even if they intend to rotate quickly.
What is the difference between local, online and nearby-player modes?
The names describe how consoles and players are connected, not just whether the internet is switched on.

| Local communication between consoles | Two or more nearby Nintendo Switch consoles | Not supported by Nintendo Switch Sports | There is no supported offline link between separate consoles. |
This distinction explains why turning off Wi-Fi does not create a two-console party mode. Offline is supported within one console; it is not a local-wireless network feature.

What should you check when a controller or mode will not work?
Most setup problems come from using the wrong console mode or underestimating a sport’s controller requirement.
- The local option is missing: Confirm the console is in TV or tabletop mode with detached Joy-Cons. Handheld Mode is unsupported.
- A second player cannot join: Open the Switch controller screen and pair the additional Joy-Con, then return to the game. Make sure the chosen sport allows the number of players you are trying to add.
- One Joy-Con works in Bowling but not Soccer: That is expected. Soccer requires two Joy-Cons per player, and Shootout additionally uses the Leg Strap.
- Four players are blocked from Tennis, Volleyball or Basketball: Those sports require one Joy-Con for every active player, so four players need four controllers.
- Twin Swords will not start: Switch to standard Chambara or provide one left-right Joy-Con pair for each player.
- You are trying to use two consoles: Nintendo does not support local communication play for this game. Put everyone on one console or use an online mode.
- You are using a Switch Lite: The software is not supported on that model; changing controller settings cannot make it compatible.
What is the current support baseline for the game?
Nintendo Switch Sports launched on April 29, 2022. Nintendo’s current product and support information continues to describe the same core boundaries: one-console local play, sport-specific Joy-Con requirements, TV and tabletop operation, and online membership for online sessions.
The headline answer is therefore straightforward but conditional: offline play works, one Joy-Con works for selected sports, and the exact controller count must be checked against the sport before inviting a group.
