Nintendo Switch Sports supports both local multiplayer on one console and online play, but they have different requirements. Local play does not require Nintendo Switch Online; playing online with other people does require an active membership, an internet connection and a Nintendo Account. Without a membership, Play Globally offers only a trial against computer-controlled opponents—not full online multiplayer.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to play Nintendo Switch Sports online?
Yes. Nintendo Support states that an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. Nintendo also lists a Nintendo Account and internet access as requirements for online features. The game and membership are separate: owning the game by itself does not provide online access.

The requirement applies to online modes such as Play Globally and Play with Friends. Nintendo does not say that the Expansion Pack tier is necessary; the requirement is an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s service information describes online multiplayer as a membership feature for compatible games.
What happens if you try Play Globally without a membership?
Nintendo allows players without a membership to try a competition in Play Globally against computer opponents. That trial is not the same as online multiplayer: it does not let you compete with other players over the internet. If your goal is to play against a friend or other people online, you need the active membership.

What is the difference between local play, Play Globally and Play with Friends?
Local multiplayer uses one system and people playing together in the same place. The two online options connect players over the internet, with Play Globally for competition and Play with Friends for playing with invited friends.
| Mode | Who you play with | Nintendo Switch Online | Internet | Voice chat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local multiplayer | People sharing one system | Not required for same-system local play | Not required for same-system local play | Not described as a local-play feature in the cited instructions |
| Play Globally | Online opponents; without membership, a trial against computer opponents | Required for online multiplayer | Required for online play | Not established as a feature of this mode in the cited information |
| Play with Friends | Friends playing online | Required for online multiplayer | Required for online play | Available through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, subject to account age rules |
Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions say all sports support local multiplayer, but the number of participants and controllers needed vary by sport. Local play can support up to four players on one system; that is an overall maximum, not a promise that every sport or arrangement accommodates four players simultaneously. Some games let players take turns or play at the same time. Nintendo gives Bowling and Archery as examples where players can choose either arrangement.

For online play, Nintendo’s setup instructions also say that each player using their own copy of the game should have updated software. Do not assume the local four-player maximum applies to every online mode or sport; the cited general instructions do not provide a complete sport-by-sport player-count chart.

What do you need before starting online play?
Have the following ready before choosing an online mode:
- The game and a compatible Nintendo Switch-family system. Nintendo’s current compatibility information refers to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The membership is separate from the game purchase.
- Internet access and a Nintendo Account. Nintendo lists both as requirements for online features.
- The correct user profile. Choose the Nintendo Switch user associated with the relevant account when opening the game.
- Updated game software for each player using their own copy. Nintendo’s multiplayer setup instructions call this out for online play.
Nintendo’s broader service FAQ lists a Nintendo Account, internet access and a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system with system menu version 6.0 or higher among the service requirements. That system-menu version is a Nintendo Switch Online service requirement in the FAQ, not a statement that the game itself requires that precise system version.
How do you play online with friends?
Once membership, account and internet access are in place, use the game’s Play with Friends option and follow its prompts to set up or join a session. The precise menu sequence can vary with software updates, so follow the labels shown in your current version rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

Voice chat is a separate setup from joining the match. In Play with Friends, Nintendo supports voice chat through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app; the membership and smartphone app are required for that feature. Nintendo Accounts belonging to people under 13 cannot use that voice-chat feature. On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo says the game can also be played while chatting with friends through GameChat. That is a separate Switch 2 context, not a claim that the smartphone-app voice-chat option works in every mode.
Can you play locally with people on one Switch?
Yes. Same-system local multiplayer is separate from online play, so a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed just to play locally. Nintendo says local play supports up to four players on one system and is available across all sports, while the individual sport determines the player arrangement and controller needs.
Before inviting a group, check which sport you plan to play and how many compatible controllers it needs. Some games support simultaneous play; others can have players take turns, and certain games offer both options. The general Nintendo instructions do not give a complete player-count and controller table for every sport, so the game’s on-screen prompts are the most useful check for your chosen activity.

Do you need extra Joy-Con controllers or the Leg Strap?
Possibly. Nintendo says additional accessories may be required for multiplayer, and controller needs vary by sport and number of players. The compatible control options described in Nintendo’s FAQ include paired Joy-Con 2 controllers, paired Joy-Con controllers, a single Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controller, and Joy-Con controllers with the Leg Strap, depending on the sport.
- Extra Joy-Con controllers: You may need more compatible controllers for additional local players. Check the game’s prompt for the sport and player count you want.
- Leg Strap: It is required for some Soccer gameplay, specifically the Leg-Strap Mode option. It is not a requirement for every sport or every Soccer match.
- Joy-Con 2 compatibility: Nintendo says the Leg Strap is not compatible with Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- Pro Controllers: Nintendo’s current FAQ says Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game.
For an online match, do not confuse the controller question with the membership requirement: having the right controller does not replace the Nintendo Switch Online membership. Conversely, local play can be available without that membership, though your sport and group size may call for additional compatible controllers or the Leg Strap.

Plan the play area before starting, especially when several people are sharing a screen. Use the recommended TV setup and make sure each participant can move safely with the controller. This is a practical setup consideration for motion controls, not an additional Nintendo Switch Online requirement.
What should you check if online play does not work?
Start with account and membership checks, then check the connection and software. Nintendo’s game FAQ specifically calls out two easy-to-miss fixes: selecting the correct user when launching the game and restarting the software after a newly started membership has had a short time to take effect.
- The game offers only computer opponents: Check that the selected user has an active membership. The no-membership Play Globally trial uses computer competitors.
- You recently started a membership: Close Nintendo Switch Sports, wait a short time, and try again, as Nintendo advises.
- The membership exists but online features still fail: Reopen the game with the Nintendo user associated with that membership, and confirm the console has internet access.
- A friend cannot join: Confirm the players are using the intended Play with Friends flow and that each player’s game software is updated.
- Voice chat is unavailable: Confirm you are using Play with Friends and the Nintendo Switch Online app, or the separate GameChat option on Nintendo Switch 2. Accounts under age 13 cannot use the app’s voice-chat feature.
If these checks do not resolve the problem, consult Nintendo Support for the current account, connection or service-specific error message rather than treating every online failure as a controller issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack required for Nintendo Switch Sports?
No. Nintendo’s membership feature information says individual and family memberships, including Expansion Pack tiers, provide online multiplayer for compatible games; Nintendo Switch Sports requires an active membership, not specifically Expansion Pack.
Do both players need updated Nintendo Switch Sports software to play online?
Nintendo’s multiplayer setup instructions say each player using their own copy should have updated software. If the versions differ, update before attempting to join the same session.
I just bought a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Why does the game still say I need one?
Nintendo advises closing the game and trying again after a short time if you have just started a membership. Also make sure you launch the game with the user profile tied to that membership.
