The right Nintendo Switch Sports purchase depends on your edition, sport and console. The physical game edition includes one Leg Strap; a digital buyer must purchase that strap separately. The strap requires an original left Joy-Con, not Joy-Con 2. Extra original Joy-Con are only needed for the local-player setup and sports you intend to play, while a second strap is a focused purchase for same-system Soccer sessions. Nintendo Switch 2 runs the game, but Joy-Con 2 cannot fit the Leg Strap, and original Joy-Con cannot be charged by attaching them to Switch 2.

The physical edition includes one Leg Strap. A digital purchase does not give you a physical strap, so digital owners who want strap-based Soccer need to buy the separate Nintendo Leg Strap. Nintendo’s standalone product listing explicitly says that the Joy-Con controller is not included.
Check the individual retailer’s box-contents text before paying. Nintendo’s digital product page contains generic promotional wording that mentions an included Leg Strap, but the physical-edition details and the separate-strap listing are the clearer guides to what is delivered. Do not automatically add a strap to a physical copy, and do not assume a digital download will mail one.

What the first strap actually needs
The Leg Strap is a holder for a compatible controller, not a motion controller by itself. Nintendo specifies an original left Joy-Con, sold separately from the standalone strap, and its attachment instructions place the strap around the thigh. A right Joy-Con cannot substitute for the left controller requirement in the strap.
How many Joy-Cons do I need for two players?
There is no single two-player quantity that covers every sport. Nintendo lists one to four players on one system and says controller configurations vary by sport, so first choose the sports and mode, then follow the controller prompt shown by the game before ordering extras.

Count the compatible controllers you already own and match them to the selected sport. Some activities can use a Joy-Con per player, while strap-based Soccer adds the requirement for an original left Joy-Con in the Leg Strap. The official FAQ does not publish a complete, current sport-by-sport simultaneous-controller matrix, so a rigid “buy exactly two” rule would be misleading.
- Open the intended sport and local mode.
- Read the on-screen illustration showing how each player should hold a controller.
- Identify whether the mode asks for one Joy-Con per player, a pair, or a strapped left Joy-Con.
- Only then buy extra original Joy-Con or a strap.
Does a second player always need a second strap?
No. Nintendo’s separate second-strap listing is aimed at same-system Soccer sessions. It is not presented as a requirement for every sport, every player or every Soccer match. Buy a second strap when the specific Soccer mode you want calls for two strapped players.
Do I need another pair of Joy-Cons for four players?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the sport’s controller layout and the controllers already paired to your system. Nintendo’s current listing supports up to four players on one system, yet the official FAQ does not supply a complete table showing the exact number and type of Joy-Con for each sport.
For a four-player gathering, inventory your controllers before buying:
- Count original Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 separately; they are not interchangeable for Leg Strap use.
- Check whether each player must hold one controller or a pair in the selected sport.
- For Soccer with Leg-Strap Mode, reserve an original left Joy-Con for every strap the mode requests.
- Start the mode and use its controller prompt as the final quantity check.
This approach avoids buying a second pair that a particular activity cannot use, or discovering that a strap session needs original left Joy-Con you do not own.
Can I use Joy-Con 2 with the Leg Strap?
No. Nintendo Support states: “Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap.” On Switch 2, use an original Switch left Joy-Con for strap-based Soccer Shoot-Out. Joy-Con 2 can control applicable sports where the game permits them, but they cannot be inserted into the strap.
What a Switch 2-only household should buy
If your only console is Switch 2 and you want Leg-Strap Mode, budget for original Switch Joy-Con as well as the strap. Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to Switch 2 to charge. Keep an original Switch available for charging, or use a charging stand or another accessory designed to charge original Joy-Con.
The charging issue is separate from compatibility: a charged original Joy-Con works with Switch 2, while an uncharged controller still needs a way to receive power.

How do I use the Leg Strap in Switch Sports?
Use an original left Joy-Con in the strap, secure it to your thigh and choose the strap-enabled Soccer option. The exact menu path differs between online and local play.
- Attach the original left Joy-Con to the Leg Strap and fasten the strap around your thigh as shown by Nintendo’s instructions.
- For Play Globally, highlight Soccer and press X to select Leg-Strap Mode.
- For Play Locally or Play with Friends, press + at the screen that shows how to hold the controllers.
- Follow the controller diagram for the selected session; do not assume the same layout applies to another sport or mode.
- Before starting, check that the strap is secure and that every player has enough unobstructed space.
The standalone strap listing still contains launch-era wording that other Soccer matches “will” receive a future update. Nintendo’s current game listings and FAQ should take precedence over that stale product copy; treat the present in-game menu as the authority for which modes are available.
Which sports are currently in Nintendo Switch Sports?
Nintendo’s current US game listing shows eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara. Basketball was established as available by Nintendo’s July 9, 2024 update announcement, rather than remaining a future promise.
The current listing gives these player ranges:
- One to four players on a single system.
- One to two players online.
Those totals do not mean every sport supports four simultaneous players with the same controller set. Use each mode’s on-screen instructions when planning a group session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo Pro Controllers work with Switch Sports?
No. Nintendo’s FAQ rules out both generations of Pro Controller for this game. Handheld mode is also not supported. Plan around compatible Joy-Con configurations instead, and remember that a Pro Controller cannot replace the original left Joy-Con required by the Leg Strap.
What accessories are genuinely useful?
Beyond the game, strap and controllers, only a few accessories solve a documented need. Cosmetic racket, sword or golf-club shells are not required by Nintendo, and no official evidence establishes that they improve performance.
Wrist straps
Nintendo’s official game-site excerpt warns: “Be aware of your surroundings. Wear wrist straps and allow adequate room around you during game play.” Replace missing or damaged wrist straps before playing motion-controlled sports. A decorative shell is optional; a properly secured wrist strap is the safety item Nintendo calls for.
Charging equipment for original Joy-Con
Switch owners can charge original Joy-Con through the console. A Switch 2-only household using those controllers needs an original Switch or a compatible original-Joy-Con charging accessory, because the controllers cannot be attached to Switch 2 for charging.
A second Leg Strap
Buy this only for the same-system Soccer sessions that require two strapped players. It does not turn other sports into strap-based games and is not a universal four-player accessory.
Scenario-based shopping lists
Physical-copy buyer with one Switch and one player
Start with the physical Nintendo Switch Sports edition with Leg Strap. It supplies the game and one strap, so buying another strap immediately would duplicate the included item. You still need an original left Joy-Con for the strap; the game package does not turn the holder into a controller. If you plan to play non-Soccer sports, use the controllers already compatible with the mode and add nothing until the game displays its requirement.

Digital buyer who only wants regular sports
A digital copy is sufficient if you do not intend to use Leg-Strap Mode. The separate strap is a Soccer accessory, not a general requirement for Basketball, Golf, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton or Chambara. If your plans change, purchase the Nintendo Leg Strap and an original left Joy-Con rather than assuming Joy-Con 2 will fit.
Two people sharing one console for Soccer
Check whether the chosen local or online mode asks for one strapped player or two. One included strap covers one player. A second Nintendo Leg Strap becomes sensible only when the same-system session calls for two players to use straps. Each strap also needs its own compatible original left Joy-Con, so count both holders and controllers in the total.
Switch 2 household moving from an original Switch
Keep your original Joy-Con for games and modes that require them. They pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot be slid onto Switch 2 for charging. Before a group session, charge them on the original console or on an original-Joy-Con charging stand. This is a power-management purchase, not a claim that Switch 2 cannot run the game.
Four-player party
Do not begin with a shopping cart full of four controllers. List the sports you will actually play, open each intended mode, and photograph or note its controller diagram. Some activities may use a single controller per participant, while others may require different arrangements. Reserve original left Joy-Con for every strap requested by a Soccer mode, then buy only the missing controllers.
Cost and checkout comparison
The meaningful comparison is the complete setup cost, not the sticker price of one item. For a physical buyer, add the game edition only if it includes the Leg Strap in the retailer’s current box description. For a digital buyer, add the download and a separate Nintendo Leg Strap if Soccer requires it. Then add any original Joy-Con, a second strap, charging stand or replacement wrist straps that your specific scenario lacks.
A physical copy can be the simpler bundle when you need the first strap, while digital can be preferable when you value a download and already own the required hardware. Retail prices, promotions and stock change, so compare totals at checkout rather than relying on an old advertised bundle. Nintendo Switch Online is a separate subscription decision for full Play Globally access; it does not reduce the hardware list or include controllers.

Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Buying two straps with a physical copy: verify that the box already contains one.
- Ordering Joy-Con 2 for strap play: Nintendo says they cannot be used in the Leg Strap.
- Assuming every two-player sport uses the same controls: inspect the mode prompt for the sport you selected.
- Counting a Pro Controller: Nintendo’s FAQ excludes both generations of Pro Controller and handheld mode.
- Forgetting the controller inside the strap: the standalone listing says “Joy-Con controller not included.”
- Ignoring charging on Switch 2: original Joy-Con pair with it but cannot attach to it for power.
- Treating a second strap as universal: it is a focused option for same-system Soccer sessions.
- Skipping safety checks: wear wrist straps and clear enough room before swinging or kicking.
How should I choose physical or digital?
Choose the physical edition when you want one Leg Strap included with the game and are comfortable using a cartridge. Choose digital when you prefer a download and are prepared to add the separate strap if your Soccer plans require it.
- Decide whether you need strap-based Soccer at all.
- If yes, check whether you already own an original left Joy-Con.
- Compare the retailer’s physical-edition box contents with the digital game’s total cost plus a separate strap.
- Add extra original Joy-Con only after checking the intended sport’s controller prompt.
- If you are on Switch 2, include charging equipment for original Joy-Con in the plan.
For online competition, distinguish equipment from membership: Nintendo’s full Play Globally access requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local play does not become available by purchasing that membership, and a membership does not supply controllers or a Leg Strap.
What should I check before checkout?
- Edition: Physical includes one Leg Strap; digital requires a separate purchase for strap play.
- Controller: The strap needs an original left Joy-Con; Joy-Con 2 cannot fit it.
- Players: Confirm the selected sport’s controller prompt instead of relying on a universal two- or four-player rule.
- Console: Switch 2 supports the game, but original Joy-Con need an independent charging solution.
- Soccer: A second strap is a targeted same-system purchase.
- Safety: Have wrist straps fitted and clear adequate room.
- Online: Full Play Globally access requires Nintendo Switch Online.
How we picked the recommendations
The recommendations follow Nintendo’s current edition descriptions, controller-compatibility statements, player ranges, mode instructions and safety guidance verified in October 2026. They prioritize avoiding duplicate straps, matching original Joy-Con requirements to Soccer modes, accounting for Switch 2 charging limitations and separating documented necessities from optional cosmetic accessories. No performance claim is made for any accessory.
