For most retro-focused players, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the better subscription. In the United States, it costs $49.99 per year for one person, compared with $159.99 for 12 months of PlayStation Plus Premium. Nintendo also covers a wider range of Nintendo systems, supports family memberships, and adds selected downloadable content. PlayStation Plus Premium is the better fit when the games you want are specifically in PlayStation’s Classics Catalog, or when you also value game trials and cloud streaming.
There is no universal winner because these are not interchangeable libraries. Nintendo’s service is built around Nintendo consoles and selected Sega systems; PlayStation Premium’s retro offering is centered on the PlayStation Classics Catalog and is part of a much larger subscription bundle. The right choice starts with the games you actually intend to play.

What is the difference between PS Plus Premium and Nintendo Switch Online?
PlayStation Plus Premium and Nintendo Switch Online are online memberships that include retro-game libraries, but they serve different console ecosystems. PlayStation Plus Premium combines the Classics Catalog with current-game benefits such as the Game Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. Nintendo Switch Online provides online play and classic-game applications, while the Expansion Pack tier adds more systems, selected DLC and Nintendo Switch 2-specific features.
That distinction matters more than a raw game count. A player looking for Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance or Nintendo-published NES games will not find an equivalent decision on PlayStation. Someone whose priority is a particular PlayStation-era title should not assume Nintendo’s larger system range makes it a substitute.

Which subscription is cheaper for retro gaming?
Nintendo is substantially cheaper in the current U.S. price listings retrieved October 30, 2026. The comparison below uses annual individual plans unless noted; prices can change.

At $49.99 per year, Expansion Pack costs less than one month of PlayStation Plus Premium. The price gap does not mean Premium is poor value: it bundles modern games, trials and streaming that Nintendo’s retro tiers do not attempt to match. Compare the complete package only if you would actually use those extras; for a retro-only budget, Nintendo wins clearly.
What retro systems and games does Nintendo Switch Online include?
The base Nintendo Switch Online membership includes NES, Super NES and Game Boy Classics. It also includes online play features for supported titles. That base plan is enough for someone whose target games are limited to those three libraries.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds select Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and Sega Genesis games. “Select” is important: the service does not provide every game released for any of those platforms. Nintendo describes an ongoing library, so the available selection can expand or change rather than functioning like a permanent, complete ROM archive.
On Nintendo Switch 2, Expansion Pack also provides access to select GameCube Classics. Nintendo identifies this collection as exclusive to Switch 2, not the original Switch hardware. Therefore, a Switch 2 owner interested in GameCube should include the console requirement in the cost calculation; an original-Switch owner cannot treat that part of the catalog as an available upgrade.
Expansion Pack also includes selected downloadable content at no additional charge. Examples named by Nintendo are the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion. You still need the corresponding base game separately, and the DLC benefit depends on keeping an active membership.

What does PlayStation Plus Premium offer for classic games?
PlayStation Plus Premium includes the Classics Catalog, and PlayStation explicitly states that this catalog is not part of the Extra tier. Premium therefore matters if classic PlayStation titles are the reason you are subscribing; Extra is not a cheaper way to obtain the same retro catalog.
The Classics Catalog is only one part of Premium. The tier also includes the Game Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play and other benefits. This broader bundle explains much of the price difference with Nintendo Switch Online.
Access methods vary by title and platform. PlayStation says the Classics Catalog includes a wide selection of classic PlayStation 3 games available via streaming only. Applicable titles in the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog may be downloadable or streamable on PS4 or PS5, subject to each game’s availability and the service terms. A fast connection is therefore more important for some Premium games than for a downloaded classic application.
Premium is also a changing service rather than a fixed archive. PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, and catalog availability can change. Check the current listing for a specific game before paying for a year; a title associated with the service in an older article may no longer be present.
Is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack better for Nintendo nostalgia?
Yes. Expansion Pack is the more direct choice for Nintendo nostalgia because its catalog spans Nintendo’s own NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 libraries, with Virtual Boy and Sega Genesis selections and, on Switch 2, GameCube Classics. The service also keeps the classic games inside Nintendo’s current console ecosystem rather than asking you to use a PlayStation console or streaming connection.
It is especially compelling when you want several Nintendo generations rather than one specific title. The base plan covers the oldest three systems for $19.99 annually; Expansion Pack is justified when you need GBA, N64, Virtual Boy, Genesis, Switch 2 GameCube or the included DLC. Do not pay for Expansion Pack automatically if NES, SNES and Game Boy are all you need.

Is PS Plus Premium worth it for classic games?
Premium can be worth it when a desired PlayStation-era game is actually in the current Classics Catalog and you will use the rest of the package. Game trials, cloud streaming and the Game Catalog can make the $159.99 annual price reasonable for a PlayStation-first household that also plays newer releases.
It is difficult to justify Premium as a pure retro purchase when the same player mainly wants Nintendo systems. The annual price is more than three times Nintendo’s Expansion Pack price, and PlayStation’s catalog is not a replacement for Nintendo’s first-party library. Confirm the exact games, whether they can be downloaded or only streamed, and which console is required before subscribing.

Nintendo’s official descriptions refer to downloadable classic-game applications for the supported systems, but the available evidence does not establish identical offline behavior for every Nintendo title. Treat each system application and its access rules as a separate case.
On PlayStation, some Classics Catalog content has a firm streaming limitation: PlayStation says a wide selection of classic PS3 games is available via streaming only. Other Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles may offer download, streaming or both, depending on the game. If you expect to play while traveling or with unreliable internet, verify the title’s download option in the console store before committing to Premium.
Which service is better for a family or shared household?
Nintendo has the stronger family economics. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack family membership supports up to eight accounts, and Nintendo says that with eight people sharing, the effective cost is about $10 per person per year. That is dramatically below the individual Premium annual price.
Family sharing still requires the people who will use it to fit Nintendo’s account and membership rules. If only one person plays, compare the $49.99 individual Expansion Pack price instead of assuming a family plan is automatically cheaper. PlayStation’s Premium price in the available data is the individual U.S. listing; do not transfer Nintendo’s eight-person calculation to PlayStation.

Use the target game, not the platform label, as the first filter. Follow this decision sequence:
- Write down the exact games. A console generation, such as “old PlayStation games” or “N64,” is not precise enough because each subscription offers only a selection.

What are the biggest limitations to understand before subscribing?
First, neither membership is ownership. A subscription grants access under the service’s terms, and catalog entries can be removed or changed. Keep a list of the games that matter most and recheck it immediately before renewal.
Second, system names do not mean complete libraries. “N64,” “Game Boy Advance” or “Classics Catalog” describes a category containing selected games, not every release from that platform. Avoid relying on unsourced claims about a service having “hundreds” of directly comparable retro games; the official descriptions here do not provide one stable, apples-to-apples total.
Third, hardware and access method affect the experience. Switch 2 is required for Nintendo’s GameCube Classics. PlayStation’s PS3 Classics highlighted by Sony are streaming-only, and other titles may have different download rules. Internet quality, available storage and the console you already own can change the practical value more than the headline price.

Choose PlayStation Plus Premium when your must-play list is specifically represented in the current PlayStation Classics Catalog and you will use Premium’s trials, streaming and broader game benefits. If the games you want are split between both ecosystems, subscribe only to the service that currently contains your priority titles, rather than paying for two catalogs that cannot substitute for one another.
