For a U.S. Nintendo Account, a digital indie game bought through the Nintendo Switch eShop is normally final and non-refundable. Nintendo does not create a separate refund category for indie games, and it specifically says mistaken purchases cannot be refunded or exchanged. The ordinary exception is an eligible digital pre-order canceled before Nintendo processes payment and pre-loads the game, generally up to seven days before release.
This guide explains what that policy means for accidental purchases, downloaded games, technical problems, pre-orders, legal rights, and purchases made outside the United States. Can I get a refund for a Nintendo Switch eShop game?
Usually not. Nintendo’s U.S. Digital Products Refund Policy says: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.”
Nintendo’s U.S./Americas support guidance is even more specific about errors: “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases.” That covers the common situations in which someone selected the wrong title, bought the wrong edition, confirmed a purchase accidentally, or changed their mind after paying.

Indie games do not have a special refund category
The policy is based on the type and status of the digital transaction, not on the size of the developer or publisher. An independently published game and a major-publisher release are treated as ordinary digital eShop purchases unless a separate rule applies, such as the pre-order cancellation window or a right required by applicable law.
What “final” means in practice
A completed purchase is not automatically reversible because the game has been downloaded, launched, failed to meet expectations, or turned out to be unsuitable. Nintendo’s published U.S. policy does not promise a cooling-off period for digital games, a satisfaction guarantee, or a general return right after delivery.

When can I cancel a Nintendo Switch digital pre-order?
An eligible digital pre-order can be canceled before Nintendo processes the payment and pre-loads the game. Nintendo says payment is processed no sooner than seven days before the announced release date, so the practical cutoff is generally up to seven days before release.
- Before payment processing: The pre-order remains cancelable under Nintendo’s stated pre-order rule.
- Payment processing, no sooner than seven days before release: Nintendo charges the full amount. The exact timing is tied to the release schedule and Nintendo’s processing system.
- After payment processing: Nintendo pre-loads a non-playable version of the game on the console.
- At release: A small update unlocks the installed content for play.
The seven-day reference is therefore a pre-order cancellation cutoff, not a seven-day return period. It does not give someone seven days to play a downloaded game and then request their money back.

What if the release date moves?
The cancellation rule is linked to when payment is processed and the game is pre-loaded, as well as the announced release date. If Nintendo changes the schedule or the pre-order’s status, check the current order information in the Nintendo Account and contact Nintendo Support promptly rather than assuming the original date still controls.
Is there a seven-day refund period for Switch games?
No general seven-day refund period is stated for completed Nintendo Switch eShop purchases in the U.S. The “up to seven days before release” language belongs to digital pre-orders that have not yet reached payment processing and pre-loading.

Prepare the information support will need
- The email address or other identifier for the Nintendo Account used to buy the game.
- The exact game title, edition, and any downloadable content included in the transaction.
- The purchase date, receipt information, and transaction details.
- Whether the title has been downloaded, pre-loaded, or launched.
- A concise explanation of why you believe an exception, technical remedy, or legal right may apply.
Keep the request factual. Nintendo’s published rule remains final and non-refundable by default, and an individual support decision should not be described as a standard entitlement available to every customer.
Does downloading or launching a game change the answer?
