If a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will not connect, start with the included USB-C cable: connect the controller to the powered Switch 2 dock, press A, and let the console pair it. If that fails, press SYNC once, try another cable and dock USB port, then use HOME > Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second. Update the console and controller, charge the pad, remove Bluetooth-audio limits and interference, and only then arrange service. The official Switch 2 pad is model BEE-008; the older Switch Pro Controller and third-party pads follow different rules.

What should I check before trying to pair the controller?

Confirm that you have the correct controller and console generation. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are official model BEE-008; the model number is printed on the back beneath the Nintendo logo. Nintendo states, “The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is only compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” It cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model or Nintendo Switch Lite.

Controller On Nintendo Switch 2 On original Nintendo Switch family Important limitation
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller (BEE-008) Official wired and wireless controller Not compatible Must be paired again when moved to another console
Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Works wirelessly Native controller USB connection does not automatically become wired; enable the wired-communication setting
Joy-Con 2 Native controller; each half counts as one wireless controller when Bluetooth audio is connected Not applicable Relevant to the two-controller Bluetooth-audio limit
Original Joy-Con Wireless use only; they cannot attach to Switch 2 rails Native controller Not the same pairing process as Joy-Con 2
Third-party controller Varies by manufacturer Varies by manufacturer Contact the controller maker rather than Nintendo’s BEE-008 support path

If the back of your official pad does not say BEE-008, Nintendo says replacing it with a BEE-008 controller may resolve the problem. Do not assume that a similar-looking third-party pad follows Nintendo’s instructions.

How do I pair a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller?

Nintendo documents three pairing routes. Use USB first when the controller is new, unresponsive or repeatedly disappearing; use the wireless route when the pad already has charge and the console can accept another wireless controller.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pair through the dock

  1. Place the Switch 2 console in its dock and power on the console.
  2. Connect the Pro Controller to a USB port on the dock with the charging cable supplied with the controller.
  3. Press A, or another controller button, to wake the pad. The console pairs it and begins charging.

Regional Nintendo pages identify the dock cable differently: the Americas power article names included cable model HAC-010, while Singapore documentation names BEE-016. Start with the cable in the Pro Controller box rather than buying a cable based on a regional model number.

Pair directly to the console

  1. Power on the Switch 2.
  2. Connect the Pro Controller directly to the console with the included USB-C cable.

Singapore support identifies this direct-console cable as BEE-011 and says the connection automatically changes to wired mode. Other regional pages simply call it the included USB-C charging cable.

Pair wirelessly with SYNC

  1. Open the HOME Menu and select Controllers.
  2. Select Change Grip/Order (Nintendo uses “Change Grip and Order” in one Americas article).
  3. Hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
  4. Wait for a player LED to remain lit. That indicates the controller is paired.

Some Asian Nintendo support pages label the same screen Connect Controllers. On that version, hold SYNC until the four player LEDs light in sequence, release it, wait for “Paired” in the upper-left, then press A and HOME to return.

When the controller has been used with a different Switch 2, pair it again, either by USB or wirelessly. A controller does not remain actively connected to two consoles at once.

What do the Pro Controller player LEDs mean?

Check the LEDs while the HOME Menu is displayed and press any button on the controller.

LED behavior Meaning Next action
One or more player LEDs blink and then remain lit The controller is paired Use it normally; if inputs still fail, investigate software, interference or audio limits
LEDs light in sequence briefly and then shut off The controller needs pairing Use USB pairing or HOME > Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then hold SYNC
No player LEDs light The controller has no usable charge Charge it before attempting to pair

Nintendo’s power guidance also says that if the player LEDs turn on momentarily and shut off, the Pro Controller will need to be paired.

What is the complete Nintendo troubleshooting sequence?

Follow these steps in order. They separate a flat battery, stale pairing record, connection-limit problem and physical fault instead of replacing the controller prematurely.

  1. Install the latest Switch 2 system update

Open HOME > System Settings > System > System Update. If the console is already current, hold POWER for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, then Restart. A short press only puts the console to sleep and does not perform the restart needed for this check.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  2. Verify the controller model

Read the model number beneath the Nintendo logo on the back. It should be BEE-008. A different official-generation pad or a third-party controller may require a different support procedure.

  3. Make a dock USB connection

Put the console in the dock, power it on, connect the controller with the supplied cable and press A. This is both a pairing attempt and a useful test of whether the controller can wake and communicate over USB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Recover from a failed USB attempt

Press SYNC once, then press A or another button to wake the controller again. Move the cable to another dock USB port, try another USB-C cable, and, if available, try another Switch 2 dock. If every accessory works except the original dock’s ports, follow Nintendo’s separate guidance for USB ports not working on the Switch 2 dock. After the USB checks, retry wireless pairing.

  5. Wake and reconnect a wireless controller

If the controller was previously paired but is not recognized, tap SYNC briefly a few times. Nintendo Singapore says this may resolve the issue; tapping SYNC disconnects the pad, while pressing A, B, X, Y or the + Control Pad reconnects it. If it remains absent, run the full Change Grip/Order pairing procedure again.

  6. Delete stale pairing information only when necessary

Go to HOME > System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Disconnect Controllers, then pair the Pro Controller again. This can clear pairing information for all wireless controllers, not just the failing pad, so keep Joy-Con 2 or another working input available before selecting it.

  7. Charge the controller and check the charge path

If the LEDs are dark or the controller shuts down immediately, charge it before further pairing attempts. With Nintendo’s Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01), connect the adapter directly to the Pro Controller. The recharge LED stays on while charging and turns off when charging is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  8. Update controller firmware

After the console itself is current, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. The controller must be powered on and paired. Controllers update one at a time; if an update stops, run the command again. Nintendo has not published a firmware version number for this procedure.

  9. Remove radio interference

Move closer to the console. Keep the console out from behind a television, off a metal rack and away from other wireless equipment. Nintendo Australia specifically advises keeping the controller within about three to four feet of wireless speakers, cordless phones and similar devices during troubleshooting. Singapore guidance also calls out microwave ovens and non-licensed covers on the console or controller.

  10. Check Bluetooth-audio controller limits

With Bluetooth headphones or a speaker connected, Switch 2 supports no more than two wireless controllers. A left Joy-Con 2 and a right Joy-Con 2 count as two separate controllers. Disconnect the Bluetooth-audio device before trying to add a third wireless pad. Without Bluetooth audio, Nintendo’s pairing pages describe support for up to eight wireless controllers, subject to controller type, features and game software.

  11. Remove accessories from the Pro Controller audio jack

When headphones are plugged into the Pro Controller, Nintendo Singapore says there is no audio from the console or television. Headphones and accessories work with one Switch 2 Pro Controller, but other controllers cannot be connected wirelessly while headphones are connected to a wireless Pro Controller. Unplug the headphones before testing a multi-controller setup.

How should I charge a Pro Controller that will not turn on?

Use the Switch 2 AC adapter NGN-01 directly with the controller when possible. Nintendo says to unplug the adapter from both ends for at least 30 seconds, inspect the USB-C cable for cuts, kinks or fraying, reconnect it and check whether the recharge LED lights. If the LED never lights, test the adapter on the console.

Dock charging requires a powered dock. Nintendo Americas says the console itself does not need to be in the dock for the dock’s USB port to charge the controller when the dock has power. Singapore support adds a regional operating detail: if the console is sitting in the dock powered off, the Pro Controller cannot be charged from that dock. If dock charging is uncertain, charge directly from NGN-01 instead.

Nintendo specifications estimate approximately 40 hours of battery life, with actual time varying by usage. The battery is a 1070 mAh lithium-ion unit and is not user-replaceable. Nintendo support pages describe approximately three hours for a full charge, while the Singapore specifications page says approximately 3.5 hours; plan on about three to 3.5 hours. If the player LEDs still never turn on after 15 to 30 minutes of charging, or the battery will not last after at least six hours of charging, Nintendo directs you to service.

Why does a Switch 2 Pro Controller work by cable but not wirelessly?

A wired connection can succeed while the wireless record, radio environment or controller limit is still wrong. After confirming the pad works over USB, open Change Grip/Order, hold SYNC for at least one second and watch for a player LED to stay lit. If the console still does not see it, use Disconnect Controllers to clear pairing information, then pair again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also disconnect Bluetooth audio, move the console away from metal and nearby wireless devices, and remove any non-licensed cover. A brief SYNC press can force a disconnect-and-reconnect cycle before you delete all pairing records.

Can I use the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller on Switch 2?

Yes, the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be used wirelessly with Switch 2, but it is not the BEE-008 Switch 2 Pro Controller and it lacks some Switch 2-specific behavior. Connecting it by USB to the dock does not automatically change it to wired communication.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

To force a wired connection, open HOME > System Settings > Controllers & Accessories and enable Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Wired Communication. When an original Switch controller is used on Switch 2, pressing HOME will not wake the console from sleep. Original Switch controllers also cannot use Switch 2’s Search for Controllers or Alarm features. Nintendo’s original-controller support page describes a maximum of seven wireless connections in that configuration; that is distinct from the up-to-eight figure on Switch 2 Pro Controller pairing pages.

What should I know about cables and regional instructions?

Nintendo’s regional pages use different model numbers for cables while describing the same practical solution. The Americas power article names HAC-010 for the included USB cable used with a dock that has a LAN port. Singapore pages identify BEE-016 for dock use and BEE-011 for direct console charging. Other Americas and Germany pages say “USB-C to USB-A charging cable” or “included USB-C charging cable.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These labels do not mean you need several special cables. Use the cable packaged with your Pro Controller first. If pairing fails, test a known-good USB-C cable, another dock port and another dock before concluding that the controller is defective.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When does Nintendo say the controller needs repair?

Escalate to your regional Nintendo service channel when the BEE-008 controller cannot pair either wirelessly or through USB-C after the system update, charge check, SYNC wake, alternate cable, alternate dock port and wireless retry. Nintendo’s Americas guidance says, “If the Pro Controller cannot be paired to the Nintendo Switch 2 console, either wirelessly or via the USB-C charging cable, the Pro Controller will need to be serviced.”

Service is also appropriate when the recharge LED never responds to a known-good NGN-01 adapter, the player LEDs remain dark after 15 to 30 minutes of charging, or the battery fails to last after a full charge. The battery is not designed for user replacement; an Authorized Nintendo Service Center must replace it.

Nintendo has not published a pairing-failure rate, recall or defect bulletin for this controller. A single failed pairing sequence is therefore not evidence of a known percentage of defective units; complete the documented ladder and use regional support for assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is replacing the controller necessary?

Replacement makes sense only after both USB and wireless paths fail and Nintendo has confirmed that service is impractical or uneconomical. Buy the official Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller model BEE-008 if you need the Switch 2 features, including the C button for GameChat, remappable GL/GR buttons, a 3.5 mm four-pole CTIA jack, HD rumble 2, motion controls, NFC and USB-C charging.

Nintendo Japan lists the standard controller at 9,980 yen including tax, launched on 5 June 2025, with a USB charging cable included. A launch US report dated 2 April 2025 cited a $79.99 MSRP, but a current US Nintendo list price was not verified, so treat that dollar figure as historical and volatile rather than a current quote. Special Japan editions listed by Nintendo include a Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition at 12,980 yen launching 29 October 2026 and a Resident Evil Requiem Edition at 11,980 yen launched 27 February 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does pressing SYNC erase all controller settings?

No. A brief SYNC press disconnects the controller and can let a button press reconnect it. The separate Disconnect Controllers command is the action that clears wireless pairing information, and it can affect every wireless controller on the console.

Can I replace the Switch 2 Pro Controller battery myself?

No. Nintendo lists the 1070 mAh lithium-ion battery as non-user-replaceable. Battery replacement should be handled by an Authorized Nintendo Service Center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the C button do during pairing?

Nothing in the pairing process. The C button is a Switch 2 GameChat control; pairing still uses USB or the SYNC button from the Controllers menu.

Will a controller remember more than one Switch 2 console?

You must pair the Pro Controller again each time it is used with a different console. A successful pairing on one Switch 2 does not remove the need to run the USB or SYNC procedure on another.
