Short answer: the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is made for Nintendo Switch 2 and does not work with the original Switch. The older Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, so upgrading the console does not automatically make your existing controller obsolete. Controller support still depends on the game: Nintendo specifically excludes both Pro Controller generations from Nintendo Switch Sports, while Joy-Con 2 is required for mouse-control features in certain Switch 2 Edition games. The compatibility details below separate console support, game modes and accessories so you can buy only what you need.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Switch 2 players who want C, GL/GR and wired-audio features | HD Rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo, Capture, GameChat C button, remappable GL/GR, four-pole CTIA 3.5 mm jack | Switch 2 only | Oct 2026 |
| Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Owners who want to reuse an existing controller on Switch 2 | Wireless pairing with Switch 2; USB charging through the dock | Original Switch and Switch 2 | Oct 2026 |
| Joy-Con 2 | Games requiring mouse controls or Joy-Con-specific motion play | Mouse controls in supported Switch 2 software; included with Switch 2 | Switch 2 only | Oct 2026 |
Which Nintendo Pro Controller works with which Switch console?
The generation direction is the key distinction. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Pro Controller as “Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system,” so it cannot be paired with an original Nintendo Switch. The original Switch Pro Controller has the opposite advantage: Nintendo supports wireless pairing with Switch 2, allowing an existing controller to remain useful after a console upgrade.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not read the phrase “Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible” on Nintendo’s support page as a statement that the two controllers cannot work with Switch 2. That wording appears in the Nintendo Switch Sports compatibility FAQ and refers to that game. In the console sense, the older controller can pair with Switch 2; in that particular game, neither Pro Controller is accepted.
What the newer model adds
The Switch 2 Pro Controller includes HD Rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo functionality, a Capture button, a C button for GameChat, and remappable GL and GR buttons. It also has a four-pole CTIA-standard 3.5 mm audio jack and ships with a USB-C charging cable. These are documented hardware features of the new model, not guarantees that every game exposes every button or audio function.

When the old controller is the sensible choice
If you already own the original Switch Pro Controller, it is a legitimate Switch 2 option for games that support a conventional gamepad. You may not need to buy the new model unless you specifically want its extra buttons, GameChat control, HD Rumble 2 or integrated headset jack. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not establish that the older controller gains the newer model’s features through software.
Which games accept a Pro Controller on Switch 2?
Game support is separate from console support. A title can run on Switch 2 yet require Joy-Con 2 for one mode, or exclude Pro Controllers entirely. Check the game’s current product page, controller icons and mode requirements before assuming that a controller works everywhere.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports work with either Pro Controller?
No. Nintendo’s FAQ explicitly says both the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. Use the controller arrangements listed for the individual sport instead, which can include Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2 or an original Joy-Con paired with the Leg Strap.
Joy-Con 2 does not fit the original Joy-Con Leg Strap, so a strap-based activity has its own accessory requirement. The fact that a Pro Controller has motion sensors does not override the game’s stated controller list; follow the game-specific FAQ rather than inferring support from hardware specifications.
What works in Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
The Switch 2 Edition adds mouse-oriented minigames in Jamboree TV that use Joy-Con 2. That requirement applies to the added mouse features, not automatically to every mode in the game. Nintendo also identifies selected video features that require a compatible USB-C camera. The upgrade pack requires the original Super Mario Party Jamboree game.
Because Nintendo describes requirements by feature, do not label the entire title “Pro Controller incompatible” without checking the mode you intend to play. A Pro Controller may still be appropriate for standard gamepad-oriented play, while the mouse minigames need Joy-Con 2.

Can Metroid Prime 4: Beyond use a Pro Controller?
Nintendo describes a Joy-Con 2 mouse-control option for the Switch 2 Edition of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The documentation establishes that the optional mouse feature uses Joy-Con 2; it does not establish that every standard-controller mode rejects the Pro Controller. Check the edition’s current control information for the exact mode and input method you plan to use.
What about other Switch 2 games?
There is no universal Pro Controller compatibility roster established by the cited Nintendo sources. For each title, look for controller icons on its product page and read any mode-specific notes. Also distinguish a game being playable on Switch 2 from being fully compatible: Nintendo warns that some original Switch software can be unsupported or not fully compatible on the new system, which is a software question separate from whether a Pro Controller is recognized.
How do I pair and charge the Switch 2 Pro Controller?
You can pair the new controller with a cable or through the console’s controller-order screen. Have the powered-on Switch 2 nearby, the included USB-C cable available, and the controller charged enough to complete pairing.
- Use wired pairing: connect the included USB-C cable directly to the powered-on Switch 2, or connect it to the Switch 2 dock while the console is docked. Follow the on-screen confirmation that appears.
- Use wireless pairing: open Controllers → Change Grip/Order on Switch 2, then hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. When the player indicator appears, the controller is assigned.
- Reconnect later: wake the console and press a button on the paired controller. If it does not appear, repeat the Change Grip/Order process and hold SYNC again.
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers may be paired with the console. The number that can be connected at the same time varies with controller types and active features, so eight is a pairing capacity, not a promise that eight identical gamepads can operate in every game.

Nintendo’s controller documentation permits charging through the Switch 2 dock with the supplied cable, or with an appropriate cable and a compatible 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) adapter approved for your country. The included cable is sufficient; another cable is not mandatory. A charging stand or third-party cable should be treated as an accessory choice rather than assumed compatible without model-specific confirmation.
Can I plug in a headset?
Use a wired headset with a four-pole CTIA-standard 3.5 mm connector for the controller’s audio jack. The connector standard identifies the intended wiring, but it does not guarantee that every third-party headset microphone or inline control will behave identically. Wireless-audio and GameChat requirements can also depend on the console, account, internet connection and geographic availability.

Which Switch accessories work with Switch 2?
Accessories do not all carry forward between generations. The following distinctions prevent common purchases that cannot attach, charge or provide the expected feature.
Original Joy-Con
Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console or charge from it. If you need attached handheld controls or charging while attached, use Joy-Con 2. The original Joy-Con pair remains useful as a wireless option for software that supports it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Joy-Con grips and straps
Original Joy-Con grips do not fit Joy-Con 2. Treat the generations as separate physical sizes even when a game supports both controller types. For Nintendo Switch Sports, verify the sport’s listed arrangement: Joy-Con 2’s shape also means it does not fit the original Joy-Con Leg Strap.
Switch docks
The original Switch dock does not work with Switch 2. Use the Switch 2 dock for TV-mode connection, wired controller pairing through the dock and dock-based charging procedures described by Nintendo.
GameCube controller adapter
Nintendo says the GameCube controller adapter works through the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. This is a dock connection for compatible software, not a way to plug a GameCube adapter into the Pro Controller itself.
USB-C camera
Some Jamboree TV video features call for a compatible USB-C camera. That camera requirement is tied to those features and is separate from Pro Controller support; a controller cannot substitute for the camera.

Should I buy the Switch 2 Pro Controller or keep my old one?
Keep the original Switch Pro Controller if you mainly play conventional gamepad titles and already have one that pairs reliably. Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller when its documented additions—GL/GR remapping, the GameChat C button, HD Rumble 2 or the CTIA headset jack—solve a specific need. Choose or retain Joy-Con 2 when a game advertises mouse controls, Joy-Con-only motion actions or a mode listed in the game’s controller requirements.
- Buy the new Pro Controller: you want Switch 2-only hardware features and a controller designed for that console.
- Reuse the original Pro Controller: you already own it and do not need the new model’s listed features.
- Use Joy-Con 2: the game’s feature explicitly calls for mouse input, Joy-Con motion play or a strap arrangement.
The Switch 2 includes a Joy-Con 2 pair, so an extra pair is an optional purchase rather than a prerequisite for ordinary console setup. Recheck requirements for individual games because updates can change mode support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check when a controller does not work?
Start with the game and mode, then verify pairing and the physical accessory. This order avoids treating a deliberate game restriction as a hardware fault.
- Read the game’s controller requirements: confirm whether the title or specific mode excludes Pro Controllers or requires Joy-Con 2, a Leg Strap or a camera.
- Confirm the generation: the Switch 2 Pro Controller is not for the original Switch; the original Pro Controller must be paired wirelessly to Switch 2.
- Pair again: open Controllers → Change Grip/Order, hold SYNC for at least one second and wait for the player indicator.
- Try the cable path: connect the included USB-C cable to the powered-on console or Switch 2 dock to establish a wired connection and charge.
- Inspect accessories: do not force original Joy-Con into Switch 2 rails, original grips onto Joy-Con 2 or an original dock onto Switch 2. Use the generation-matched hardware.
- Check online features separately: GameChat and camera-dependent functions can have account, membership, internet or geographic conditions that do not affect basic controller pairing.
If a game remains unresponsive after these checks, consult its current Nintendo support page or product listing for a patch-specific controller note. A working pairing does not guarantee that every game mode accepts that input.
