Short answer: Buy the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller if you play docked or on a tabletop, want a full-size grip, and will use its C GameChat button, mappable GL/GR rear buttons, 3.5 mm headset jack, amiibo support, or HD Rumble 2. Nintendo lists the standard controller at $89.99 in the United States and ¥9,980 tax included in Japan (prices checked October 2026). It works only with Nintendo Switch 2. Keep an original Switch Pro Controller if you already own one and do not need those new features; choose Joy-Con 2 for handheld play or games that require mouse controls; and consider a less expensive licensed or third-party pad if Hall-effect/TMR sticks or cross-platform support matter more than Nintendo’s native feature set.

What is the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is Nintendo’s full-size wireless gamepad for Switch 2. Nintendo released it on June 5, 2025 (US SKU 123674; UPC 00045496885861) and describes it as a grip-style controller for TV and tabletop play. The box contains the controller and a USB-C charging cable.

Its defining difference from the original Switch Pro Controller is the Switch 2-specific hardware: a C button that opens the GameChat menu, GL and GR rear buttons that can be mapped to other controls, and a 4-pole stereo 3.5 mm CTIA headset jack. It also carries HD Rumble 2, motion sensors, NFC for amiibo and the Capture, HOME, SYNC and other standard buttons.

Nintendo’s compatibility wording is strict: the controller is “only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” It is not an upgrade path for an original-Switch-only household.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Is the Switch 2 Pro Controller worth $89.99?

It is worth the list price when you value Nintendo’s integrated features and use a conventional controller for long docked sessions. It is poor value if you play mainly in handheld mode, already own an original Pro Controller, need mouse controls, or specifically want Hall-effect or TMR sticks.

Reasons to pay for the official controller

  • The C button opens GameChat without navigating through the HOME menu. GameChat still requires internet access, a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account; availability varies by country. Video chat additionally requires a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or compatible USB-C webcam.
  • GL and GR can be assigned through Switch 2 system settings, letting you move frequently used actions without a companion app.
  • The 3.5 mm CTIA jack enables private listening from the controller. Nintendo notes that it does not guarantee compatibility with every headset.
  • HD Rumble 2, NFC/amiibo and motion controls are built into the same pad, rather than requiring separate accessories.
  • Nintendo’s pairing, wake and system-support path is the least complicated option because it is first-party hardware.

Reasons to spend less or keep what you have

  • An original Switch Pro Controller can be paired with Switch 2, so replacing it is optional when C, GL/GR and the headset jack are unimportant.
  • Joy-Con 2 are better for handheld use and are the only option among these choices for games that force mouse controls.
  • Several alternatives advertise Hall-effect or TMR stick modules, broader device support and prices below $70.
  • The official controller uses a conventional analog-stick design. Nintendo has not published a Hall-effect/TMR specification or a stick-drift failure rate; reviewer coverage has described the sticks as potentiometer-based and potentially subject to degradation over time.

What are the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s specifications?

Specification Official figure or qualification
Dimensions Approximately 105 × 148 × 60.2 mm
Weight Approximately 235 g
Battery Internal 1070 mAh lithium-ion; not user-removable
Battery life Approximately 40 hours, an estimate that varies with use
Charging time About 3 hours in Nintendo Japan specifications and Nintendo Support Australia; Nintendo Singapore lists about 3.5 hours
Charging USB-C cable included; can charge from a Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter
Wireless Bluetooth and NFC
Sensors Accelerometer and gyroscope
Rumble HD Rumble 2
Audio 4-pole stereo 3.5 mm mini plug, CTIA standard
Buttons Pressable L/R sticks, A/B/X/Y, L/R/ZL/ZR, GL/GR, +/−, Control Pad, HOME, Capture, SYNC and C
Other hardware NFC/amiibo touch area, charge lamp and player LEDs

Nintendo Japan says the revised construction makes stick operation quieter and connects the body in a seamless structure for a smoother grip. Nintendo has not published a decibel measurement, so “quieter” is a design claim rather than a quantified performance rating.

ZL and ZR are digital triggers rather than the analog triggers found on some non-Nintendo gamepads. That matters for racing or simulation games that use variable trigger travel.

Does the Switch 2 Pro Controller work with the original Switch?

No. Nintendo Support’s answer is explicit: the Switch 2 Pro Controller is only for Switch 2. It cannot be paired as a normal controller with the original Nintendo Switch.

The direction is different for older accessories. Nintendo says many original Switch accessories work with Switch 2, and Nintendo’s support and buying guidance identify the original Switch Pro Controller as pairable with the new console. Check each game’s official controller-support information before assuming every feature carries over.

Can I use my old Pro Controller on Switch 2?

Yes, an original Switch Pro Controller remains a practical second controller for Switch 2. It gives you the familiar full-size layout, but it does not gain the new C button, GL/GR rear buttons, headset jack or HD Rumble 2.

How does the Switch 2 Pro Controller compare with Joy-Con 2?

Use case Switch 2 Pro Controller Joy-Con 2
Handheld play Requires a separate screen setup and is not a handheld attachment Designed to attach to the console; included with Switch 2
Mouse controls Does not provide the Joy-Con optical mouse controls Supports mouse-style controls through the rails
Grip and layout Traditional full-size dual-stick pad Two small detachable controllers; a charging grip can make a larger grip shape
Special buttons C plus mappable GL/GR Right Joy-Con 2 has C; Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip provides a grip and GL/GR mapping
Battery information About 40 hours, Nintendo estimate About 20 hours per unit, according to Pocket Tactics
Japan price ¥9,980 tax included ¥9,980 tax included for an L/R set; ¥5,480 for an individual unit

The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip costs $39.99 in the US or ¥3,980 in Japan, but it requires Joy-Con 2 that you already own or purchase separately. Choose Joy-Con 2 when portability, split multiplayer or mouse input comes first; choose the Pro Controller for a stable, larger grip in TV or tabletop mode.

What features are new versus the original Switch Pro Controller?

C button and GameChat

Pressing C opens the GameChat menu from any compatible game. The hardware does not make the online service free: Nintendo requires internet access, Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account for online features, and GameChat is unavailable in some countries.

GL and GR rear buttons

Each rear button can be mapped to another button through the console’s system interface. The documented path is System Settings → Controllers and Accessories → Change Button Mapping. Power, HOME, Volume and SYNC cannot be remapped. The mapping is a system feature, so no third-party configuration application is required.

Headset jack

The 3.5 mm port uses the 4-pole CTIA standard for stereo headsets. Compatibility is not universal, so a headset that works on another device may still require an adapter or may not be supported. The Verge described this as the only wireless Switch 2 controller with a 3.5 mm jack in its May 2026 coverage; that assessment can change if a later licensed controller adds one.

HD Rumble 2 and amiibo

Nintendo describes HD Rumble 2 as capable of stronger, heavier and sharper vibration expression. The controller also has built-in amiibo functionality; an amiibo figure is not included.

How do you pair and configure the controller?

You need a charged controller, the Switch 2 console and either wireless pairing or a docked USB connection. Nintendo supports up to eight wireless controllers paired with a console, although the usable maximum depends on controller type, features and the game.

  1. Turn on the Switch 2 and open the HOME menu.
  2. Choose the controller-pairing option, then hold the controller’s SYNC button until the player LEDs begin cycling.
  3. Select the controller when it appears on the console. Nintendo also supports connecting the controller to the dock by USB while the console is docked.
  4. For rear-button assignments, open System Settings → Controllers and Accessories → Change Button Mapping, select the Pro Controller and assign GL or GR.
  5. Connect a CTIA-compatible headset to the 3.5 mm port. If you plan to use GameChat voice or video, confirm that the service is available in your country and that your account and Nintendo Switch Online membership meet Nintendo’s requirements.

Games can impose their own controller requirements. Nintendo advises checking the software’s official support page, especially for titles that use mouse controls or unusual layouts.

How long does the battery last, and how is it charged?

Nintendo estimates about 40 hours from the 1070 mAh internal lithium-ion battery, with actual life varying by use. Charging is listed as approximately three hours by Nintendo Japan and Nintendo Support Australia; Nintendo Singapore lists approximately 3.5 hours, so allow the longer figure when planning a full recharge.

The battery is not user-removable. Nintendo Japan directs owners to fee-based Nintendo service for battery replacement rather than providing a user-accessible cell. Charge with the included USB-C cable or a Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter. The cable is included, but an AC adapter is not listed as an extra item in the controller box.

What does the Switch 2 Pro Controller cost?

Prices vary by market and edition. The following figures are Nintendo list prices or dated listings, not a promise of a future checkout total.

Market or edition Price and status
United States, standard controller $89.99 Regular Price on Nintendo’s US store listings, checked October 30, 2026
Japan, standard controller ¥9,980 tax included; released June 5, 2025
Japan, Amazon dated listing ¥9,980, sold and shipped by Amazon, checked October 26, 2026
Germany, dated promotion €63.99 versus a €74.90 comparison price on Amazon.de, checked October 25, 2026; a deal, not Nintendo’s euro MSRP
US Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition $99.99 Regular Price; Nintendo US listing showed sold out/currently unavailable during the October 2026 check
Japan Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition ¥12,980 tax included, checked October 29, 2026
Japan Resident Evil Requiem Edition ¥11,980 tax included; released February 27, 2026

The standard US price is $89.99, although some launch-era 2025 coverage cited $84.99. Treat that older figure as historical rather than the current list price. Special editions use the same core controller hardware; the premium pays for the finish and collectability. The Zelda edition’s additional US price is $10, while Japan’s premium is ¥3,000.

What are the best cheaper Switch 2 controller alternatives?

PowerA Advantage Wireless Controller — best licensed value

Nintendo’s US store lists this officially licensed controller at $69.99. Product and retailer feature information advertises Hall-effect sticks, extra mappable buttons, motion controls, a C button and up to 30 hours of battery life. It is the clearest middle-ground choice when magnetic stick modules matter but you still want a C button and a Switch 2-focused design. Confirm the exact package and firmware requirements before buying because feature availability can vary by revision.

EasySMX S10 — best cross-platform feature set

The Verge’s May 2026 alternatives guide placed the S10 as its best overall third-party choice at about $40–$60. It uses TMR sticks, includes NFC/amiibo, HD-style rumble, two rear buttons and console wake, and supports Switch 2, original Switch, PC, Steam Deck and mobile. It does not provide native Switch 2 operating-system support, so some system-level behavior differs from Nintendo’s controller.

EasySMX S10 Lite — simplest low-cost mapping option

The Verge describes the S10 Lite at roughly $35–$40 as unusual because Switch 2’s own interface can map its rear buttons and remember the console without a special pairing routine. It gives up amiibo and HD rumble, making it a better budget or second-pad choice than a full replacement for Nintendo’s controller.

8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth — dock-and-PC option

Pocket Tactics names the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth its best third-party choice, highlighting a charging dock, extra buttons and PC/mobile support. A firmware update is required for Switch 2, and sleep-wake is listed as supported after initial setup. A dated Japanese Amazon listing showed about ¥8,622 on October 26, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8BitDo Ultimate 2C — lowest-cost Hall-effect option

Pocket Tactics lists the Ultimate 2C at under $30 at the time of its guide, with Hall-effect sticks and about 15 hours of battery life. It is aimed at buyers who prioritize stick technology and price over the official controller’s headset jack, NFC, HD Rumble 2 and system integration.

GuliKit Elves 2 Pro and TT Pro — adjustable-stick alternatives

The Verge covers the TT Pro with TMR sticks, adjustable stick tension, up to four rear paddles and wake support. A Japanese comparison listed the Elves 2 Pro at ¥5,501 with HD vibration and wake after a firmware update, provided the console is on system version 20.3.0 or later. Check update instructions before pairing.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

HORIPAD Turbo — inexpensive local multiplayer pad

Nintendo’s US store lists the wireless HORIPAD Turbo for $39.99. A dated Japanese comparison listed the wireless model at about ¥6,509 and a wired approximately three-meter model at ¥3,845. The wireless version includes a C button and rear buttons but omits vibration, amiibo and sleep-wake; the wired version is particularly suited to a low-cost second controller for children or local multiplayer.

Does the controller have Hall-effect sticks or prevent drift?

Nintendo does not advertise Hall-effect or TMR sensors for the official controller and has not published a drift-failure rate. Review coverage has characterized its sticks as potentiometer-based and warned that they can degrade over time, but that is not a Nintendo-published statistical guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a Hall-effect or TMR model when replaceable or magnetic sensing is your primary concern. That trade-off can include missing HD Rumble 2, less certain OS integration, required firmware updates or no headset jack. No stick technology eliminates every possible mechanical or software problem.

Who should buy the official controller?

  • Docked and tabletop players who want a full-size, balanced grip for extended sessions.
  • GameChat users who want a dedicated C button and a wired headset connection.
  • Players who use amiibo, motion controls and HD Rumble 2 in the same games.
  • Anyone who wants GL/GR assignments through Switch 2 system settings rather than a vendor app.
  • Households that prefer first-party pairing and wake behavior over cross-platform flexibility.

Who should skip or delay it?

  • Original-Switch owners: the controller is incompatible with that console.
  • Handheld-first players who are satisfied with the included Joy-Con 2.
  • Owners of an original Pro Controller who do not need C, GL/GR or the headset jack.
  • Players who require mouse controls, which are provided by Joy-Con 2.
  • Buyers seeking Hall-effect/TMR sticks, analog triggers or PC and mobile support.
  • Anyone shopping for a low-cost second pad; wired HORIPAD Turbo-class controllers cost considerably less.

How this guide ranks the options

The order weighs official Switch 2 feature completeness, current regional list or dated street pricing, stick technology, wake and pairing behavior, cross-generation and PC support, and the physical layout for each type of game. Nintendo’s controller ranks first for native features and predictable system integration, not because every buyer needs its premium. Alternative pads rank higher for specific priorities such as magnetic sticks, cross-platform play or a low second-controller cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Switch 2 Pro Controller be used while it is charging?

Nintendo specifies USB-C charging and dock registration, but its product information does not promise a particular wired-play mode for every game. If you need to play during a low-battery warning, connect the included cable to the console dock or an appropriate Switch 2 AC adapter and confirm the controller appears before starting.

Does the controller include a wall charger?

The package includes a USB-C charging cable. Nintendo’s listed contents do not include a separate AC adapter, so charge from the Switch 2 dock, an existing compatible adapter or another suitable USB-C power source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use any 3.5 mm headset for GameChat?

The port follows the 4-pole CTIA stereo standard, but Nintendo does not guarantee every headset or microphone combination. Headsets wired for a different standard may need an adapter or may not provide voice input.

How many Pro Controllers can connect to one Switch 2?

Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be paired at once. The number you can actively use depends on the controller types, enabled features and the particular game, so a local multiplayer title may impose a lower practical limit.

Does the Zelda 40th Anniversary controller perform differently?

Nintendo’s documented core hardware is the same as the standard controller. The extra cost is for the themed finish and limited-edition status, so choose it for collecting rather than for additional controls or battery capacity.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
