Yes. Nintendo can change the Switch 2’s manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) after launch, and it has already raised the U.S. MSRP. A future price cut is possible, but Nintendo has not announced one or given a timetable. The practical distinction is that an MSRP change does not automatically set every retailer’s price: stores may charge more or less, and the price you pay depends on the seller and the offer available when you buy.
Has Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price since launch?
Yes. The Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo of America initially set the U.S. console MSRP at $449.99, then announced that it would raise it to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo attributed the U.S. revision to market-condition changes it expected to continue over the medium to long term. That is a change to Nintendo’s suggested price—not evidence that every retailer changed its checkout price on the same day.

Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 corporate notice also recorded different revisions in Japan and Europe. These are market-specific prices for particular configurations, not one worldwide price converted into several currencies.
| Market and product | Earlier MSRP | Revised MSRP | Effective date |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, Switch 2 system | $449.99 | $499.99 | September 1, 2026 |
| Japan, Japanese-Language System | ¥49,980 | ¥59,980 | May 25, 2026 |
| Europe, Switch 2 system | €469.99 | €499.99 | September 1, 2026 |
Regional amounts should be read in their local context. Nintendo’s European figures include tax, while its U.S. figures do not. The Japanese revision applies to the Japanese-Language System; Nintendo said the Japan Multi-Language System sold through My Nintendo Store would remain unchanged in its May notice. Comparing headline figures across currencies—or across different system configurations—does not establish which market is cheaper.

Sources for these announcements are Nintendo of America’s 2026 U.S. price notice and Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s May 8, 2026 corporate notice. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 U.S. pre-order notice confirmed the launch MSRP, and Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement gave the launch date.
Can Nintendo raise the MSRP again?
Nintendo has not said that another increase is scheduled, but its published statements make clear that launch pricing is not permanently fixed. In April 2025, the company said future adjustments to Nintendo product prices were possible depending on market conditions. The later U.S. revision shows that this was not merely a theoretical possibility.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has said product prices are determined through an overall evaluation of factors in each region. In an investor Q&A, Nintendo discussed consumer perceptions of price, exchange-rate differences relative to the original Switch launch, regional market conditions, and tariffs as considerations in hardware pricing. These factors help explain why prices can differ or change; they do not amount to a prediction that another increase will happen.
That distinction matters if you are trying to forecast what the console will cost next month or next year. Nintendo has named influences on its pricing decisions, not a formula that lets buyers calculate a future MSRP. The April 2025 statement said other price adjustments were possible depending on market conditions; it did not set a schedule, identify a particular trigger, or say how large a potential change might be.
The increase already announced is specific: the U.S. MSRP moved up by $50, from $449.99 to $499.99. Japan’s Japanese-Language System rose by ¥10,000, from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980, while the European figure rose by €30, from €469.99 to €499.99. Those differences are a useful reminder that Nintendo evaluates prices by region. They should not be treated as a template for another future increase, whether in those markets or elsewhere.

Can Nintendo lower the Switch 2 price?
A lower MSRP is possible as a future business decision, but Nintendo has not announced a Switch 2 price cut in the official statements described above. Its wording allows for future price adjustments without promising that prices will move in either direction. There is no published date or forecast for a lower MSRP.
A store promotion is a separate matter. A retailer may offer a temporary discount even while Nintendo’s MSRP remains unchanged; conversely, a retailer could charge more than MSRP where its own pricing and availability allow. A discounted listing therefore does not prove that Nintendo has reduced the official suggested price, and a future MSRP cut would not guarantee that every seller immediately offers the same deal.
When you see a lower advertised price, check what is actually being offered before treating it as a price cut. Is it the same system, in the same language configuration, with the same bundle contents? Is the seller serving your region, and does the displayed amount include applicable tax and delivery charges? A retailer discount can still be a good deal, but it is a different event from Nintendo changing its MSRP.
What is the difference between MSRP and the price at checkout?
MSRP is Nintendo’s suggested retail price, not a universal price guarantee across sellers. Nintendo’s U.S. purchase terms say that the price shown in its Store at the time of purchase controls, that prices and availability may change without notice, and that Nintendo is not obligated to match another seller’s advertised price.
For a buyer, the relevant comparison is the final price for the same product, from a seller serving the buyer’s region, at the time of purchase. Check whether the listing is for the same system configuration or bundle, and account for applicable tax and delivery charges before comparing totals. A headline MSRP and a retailer’s final checkout amount can answer different questions.

This also means the date on an old price announcement does not settle what a particular store charges today. Nintendo’s U.S. terms identify the Store price at the time of purchase as the controlling price for that transaction and say pricing and availability may change without notice. A retailer has its own offer and terms. If the checkout amount differs from a price you saw earlier, check the seller’s current listing and order details rather than assuming the previous amount still applies.
Do not assume Nintendo will match a sale elsewhere, either. Its U.S. purchase terms expressly say it is not obligated to match another seller’s advertised price. A buyer considering a retailer promotion should review that retailer’s conditions, including what product is included and the final total, instead of relying on Nintendo to make its own Store price equal to the promotion.
Should you buy now or wait for a possible price cut?
There is no guaranteed winning choice: waiting could bring a retailer promotion, but it could also leave you facing a later MSRP revision. Nintendo has not promised a cut or given a timetable, so a purchase decision should rest on the current offer and how soon you want the console—not on an assumed future discount.
Buying sooner may make sense if
- You want the console now and the current total from a reliable seller fits your budget.
- You have found a retailer offer that is attractive for the exact model or bundle you want.
- You would rather avoid the uncertainty of future MSRP changes, recognizing that a change in MSRP does not dictate every retailer’s price.
Waiting may make sense if
- You do not need the system immediately and are comfortable with the possibility that a lower price may not appear.
- You plan to watch retailer promotions rather than treating an announced Nintendo price cut as inevitable.
- You are comparing complete setup costs, not only the console’s headline price. Nintendo’s U.S. accessory notice named a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card and a Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector among the relevant products, but the console MSRP alone does not state what those items will cost at checkout.
For either choice, compare like with like: region, system language configuration, bundle contents, seller, and total checkout amount. Nintendo’s regional notices show why currency alone is not enough to make a fair comparison, while its Store terms explain why its MSRP is not a promise to match a retailer’s offer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA useful way to make the decision is to separate what is known from what is uncertain. The known figures are the published regional MSRP revisions and their effective dates. What is not known from Nintendo’s statements is whether it will later lower the MSRP, raise it again, or when any further change might occur. Retailer promotions add a second uncertainty: they may appear while an MSRP is unchanged, but there is no guarantee that a specific seller will discount the system or keep a particular offer available.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you are comparing waiting with buying now, make the comparison using the current total for the exact console or bundle you want. Include any accessories you already know you will purchase, but do not assume a bundle or add-on is required simply because it appears alongside the console. Nintendo named a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card and a Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector in its U.S. accessory notice; that identifies relevant products for a setup-cost comparison, not a required purchase list or a promise about their current prices.
Tax treatment can make a displayed price look different across markets, too. Nintendo’s European amounts in the May 2026 notice include tax, while the U.S. amounts do not. So a cross-border comparison based on the currency figures alone can misstate the actual amount a buyer pays. Compare the local price and final checkout total available to you, rather than converting one market’s number and treating it as an official price in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Nintendo have to keep the launch price?
The launch price was not a permanent commitment. Nintendo’s April 2025 statement allowed for future price adjustments, and the company later announced a U.S. MSRP revision. That history answers whether the launch MSRP was locked: it was not.
For an individual order, the applicable price depends on the seller’s terms and the price presented at the time the purchase is completed. A past listing or an earlier announcement is not, by itself, a guarantee that a seller will honor that amount on a later purchase.
The launch MSRP remains useful as a point of comparison: the U.S. system started at $449.99, and Nintendo later announced a $499.99 MSRP effective September 1, 2026. But it is not a standing promise that buyers can still purchase at the launch amount. If you are placing an order now, look at the current offer and the terms for that seller and region.

What to check before placing an order
- Confirm the market. Nintendo’s published prices and dates differ by region. Use the price intended for the market where you are buying; do not substitute a currency conversion for a local MSRP.
- Confirm the configuration. The Japan notice distinguishes the Japanese-Language System from the Japan Multi-Language System sold through My Nintendo Store. Make sure listings refer to the same configuration before comparing them.
- Compare the final total. Account for applicable tax and delivery charges, and check the seller’s price at the time you complete the purchase.
- Separate MSRP from promotions. A retailer’s temporary discount or higher price is not automatically a change to Nintendo’s suggested price.
- Decide based on a real offer. Buying now means accepting the current offer; waiting means accepting uncertainty about both future MSRP changes and retailer promotions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Nintendo have to match a retailer’s lower Switch 2 price?
No. Nintendo’s U.S. Store terms state that it is not obligated to match another seller’s advertised price. A lower retailer listing is a separate offer, so review that seller’s conditions and the final checkout total.
Will Nintendo honor the price I saw yesterday in its Store?
Nintendo’s U.S. purchase terms say the Store price shown at the time of purchase controls, and that pricing and availability may change without notice. A previously viewed price is not necessarily the price applicable when you complete the order.

In its April 2025 U.S. notice, Nintendo said it was keeping the console’s launch price steady while changing prices for some accessories. That announcement was about the launch period and does not establish the current price of every accessory.
What was the Switch 2’s U.S. launch price?
Nintendo of America confirmed a $449.99 U.S. launch MSRP in its April 18, 2025 pre-order notice. Nintendo announced the console’s June 5, 2025 launch date on April 2, 2025.
Is the current U.S. MSRP $499.99?
Nintendo of America announced that the U.S. MSRP would change from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. MSRP is Nintendo’s suggested price; individual retailers’ checkout prices may differ.
Has Nintendo announced a Switch 2 price cut?
No price cut or timetable is announced in the official statements described here. A retailer could run a promotion independently, but that would not by itself mean Nintendo had lowered the MSRP.
Are the Switch 2 prices the same in every country?
No. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 corporate notice listed different regional prices and dates. The figures also reflect different tax treatment and, in Japan, distinguish between system configurations, so compare local like-for-like products rather than converting headline prices.
The Bottom Line
Nintendo has shown that the Switch 2 launch MSRP is not locked: the U.S. price rose from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, with separate revisions announced for Japan and Europe. A lower MSRP is possible, but Nintendo has not announced a cut or a timetable. For a buying decision, compare the current local offer for the same configuration, seller, and checkout total—and treat any future deal or price change as uncertain.
