Most Nintendo Switch games can be played on Nintendo Switch 2 using the original physical game card or a digital copy, with no paid upgrade required. Compatibility and features are not universal, though: a small number of games have hardware or mode limitations, while some games offer optional paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades and others receive free updates. Check each game’s current Nintendo listing, then distinguish whether you need the original game, a free update, or a paid Edition upgrade.

Do original Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Yes, compatible Switch physical game cards and digital games work on Switch 2 without buying a Switch 2 Edition. Backward compatibility is the basic playability route; an Edition upgrade is a separate, optional purchase for added features or content.

That distinction matters when deciding what to buy. If you own a Switch game already, you do not need to purchase its Edition simply to play the original game on the new console. If an Edition’s enhancements appeal to you, check whether it requires the original game and whether its upgrade pack is sold separately. A complete physical Switch 2 Edition game card includes the original game and the upgrade pack, but Nintendo cautions that some publishers may put a download code—not a game card—in a physical box.
Nintendo’s compatibility information is not a guarantee that every title and feature works perfectly. Nintendo says its testing is limited: “During testing, games are started and limited testing is conducted.” Its broad compatibility overview says some test information is current as of June 5, 2025, and that compatibility status can change. Treat a compatibility result as guidance rather than a promise about every mode, accessory or gameplay situation.
How can I check whether a particular game is compatible?
Look up the game on its current Nintendo game page or eShop listing before you rely on it. For an unlisted third-party game, check the publisher’s guidance too; do not assume that general compatibility means every game or feature is supported.
- Find the exact game. Search the current Nintendo listing for the title and edition you own, especially when a series has more than one release.
- Check compatibility notes. Look for an explicit warning, an unsupported feature or a controller requirement. A game may launch while a particular accessory-dependent mode does not work as expected.
- Check update and Edition information separately. Nintendo’s free-update list identifies games with free Switch 2 updates. The game’s Edition listing describes optional paid upgrades. One does not imply the other.
- Confirm the region and purchase type. A US product page is the appropriate place to verify US pricing and availability. A physical Edition, an upgrade pack, and the original Switch game are different purchases.
Nintendo’s downloadable compatibility issue lists are snapshots, not an exhaustive live list for every game. In particular, do not treat a PDF or compatibility result dated June 2025 as a definitive status for all games in November 2026.
Which games have optional paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades?
Nintendo’s US featured page names several paid Edition paths for owners of the original games. These upgrades are optional enhancements, not fees required to make the original games playable.

What does an upgrade cost?
Price depends on the game and region. Nintendo of America listed the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack at a regular price of $4.99 in 2026. That is a manufacturer-listed price, not a guarantee that the price will remain unchanged; check the current US listing before purchase.
For an eligible game you already own, Nintendo says an upgrade pack can be bought through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, or as a retailer-sold download code. Confirm that the pack matches your game and region. The original Switch game remains playable on an original Switch; Switch 2 Edition enhancements apply on Switch 2.
Can a subscription cover an Edition upgrade?
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs at no additional cost while the membership is active. You still need the physical or digital base game. This membership benefit is specific to those Zelda packs; it does not mean every Switch 2 Edition is included, and access does not continue after membership lapses.
Which games get free Switch 2 updates?
Nintendo’s free-update list includes the following original Switch games. Update features vary: some changes affect visuals or frame rate, while other updates add GameShare. The list does not mean every title receives the same upgrade or a paid Edition.

Animal Crossing is both a free-update and paid-upgrade case
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a free update for existing owners and a separate paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade. Nintendo describes exclusive Edition enhancements including improved resolution and mouse controls. The paid pack is not required to receive the free update or to play the original game on Switch 2.
Nintendo also says upgraded online sessions can support up to 12 players. That figure describes the Switch 2 Edition’s online sessions; it is not an independently measured performance result. The game is a useful example of why “free update” and “Switch 2 Edition” should be checked as separate entries.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update timing
Nintendo of America dates the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe free Switch 2 update to September 1, 2026, and lists improved visuals, loading and expanded local multiplayer. These are Nintendo’s descriptions of the update, not independent benchmark results.
What games have controller or accessory limitations?
Some exceptions are caused by the physical fit of an accessory or by a feature that depends on an original Joy-Con’s hardware. They do not mean that a paid Switch 2 Edition will fix the limitation.

- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit cannot be used. Nintendo says Switch 2 does not fit the kit’s VR Goggles. Nintendo also notes caveats for other Labo kits.
- Ring Fit Adventure can be played using original Switch Joy-Con attached to the Ring-Con. Joy-Con 2 do not fit the Ring-Con.
- 1-2-Switch, Game Builder Garage and WarioWare: Move It! need original Joy-Con for features that depend on the IR camera.
- Nintendo Switch Sports needs an original Joy-Con for Soccer Shoot-Out using the leg strap.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch! has caveats noted by Nintendo; check its current listing for the specific play mode you intend to use.
Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to it. They also need an original Switch or a compatible charging accessory to charge. If a game depends on them, account for both the controller requirement and how you will keep the controllers charged.

How do I choose between the original game, a free update and an Edition?
Use this order: establish basic compatibility, identify any free update, then decide whether an optional Edition’s features are worth its cost or are available through an eligible active membership. Keeping those decisions separate prevents buying an upgrade pack just to solve a compatibility question.
- Start with what you own. Identify whether your copy is a physical Switch game card or a digital game, and confirm the exact title on Nintendo’s current listing.
- Check whether it runs. Review compatibility notes and any mode-specific accessory requirements. For an unlisted third-party title, consult the publisher as well.
- Look for a free update. If Nintendo lists one, inspect its described benefits. Do not assume it adds the same features as another game’s update.
- Evaluate the paid Edition only if its additions matter to you. Compare the specific enhancement or new content with the price on your regional listing. Owners of the original game should look for an upgrade pack rather than repurchasing the base game by mistake.
- Check membership eligibility and packaging. The two Zelda upgrade packs have a membership route for eligible active Expansion Pack members. If you want a physical complete Edition, verify whether the box contains a game card or a download code.
A microSD Express card is not a prerequisite for playing a backwards-compatible physical game card. Do not add storage hardware to the compatibility checklist unless you have a separate storage need.
What is the difference between compatibility, an update and an Edition?
Compatibility answers whether the original game can be played on Switch 2. A free update adds changes to an existing game at no additional charge according to Nintendo’s update listing. A Switch 2 Edition upgrade is a separate, optional route to specified enhancements or new content, generally requiring the original game unless you buy a complete physical Edition.
These categories can overlap. A game may run without an upgrade, receive a free update, and also offer a paid Edition pack, as Animal Crossing: New Horizons does. Conversely, seeing an Edition listed does not mean the original Switch game is incompatible or that all the Edition’s features are included free.
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance, free-update list and individual product pages answer different questions. Because compatibility status, Edition availability and prices can change, consult the current listing for the game and region before making a purchase decision.

Is there a published percentage of all Switch games that work on Switch 2?
Nintendo has not established an overall percentage for all Switch games compatible as of October 29, 2026. Its limited testing notes also mean a single percentage would not establish that every mode or accessory works.
Do I need a microSD Express card to play my Switch cartridges?
No. A microSD Express card is not a requirement for playing a backwards-compatible physical game card. Storage expansion is a separate consideration.

Does a physical Switch 2 Edition box always contain a game card?
