Choose a slim carrying case if you want to take your Nintendo Switch 2 and a few games in an everyday bag with less added bulk. Choose a travel case when you want features such as a sturdier shell, a handle or more organized accessory storage—especially for a crowded backpack or luggage. Those labels are not standardized protection ratings: compare the specific case’s construction, fit and storage, and don’t assume it has passed a particular drop test.

| PowerA Slim Case for Nintendo Switch 2 | Everyday carry with fewer extras | Up to 10 game cards; exterior 12.2 × 5.91 × 1.57 inches | Nintendo Switch 2 | Nov 2026 |
| PowerA Protection Case for Nintendo Switch 2 | Travel with small accessories and a handle | Sturdy outer shell; nine game cards, two microSD Express cards, small-accessory pocket and handle | Multiple Switch generations, according to the listing | Nov 2026 |
| RDS Industries Game Traveler Deluxe Travel Case | Travel-case construction with a recessed insert | Hard shell and recessed insert; the listing’s game-card capacity is inconsistent | Multiple Switch generations, according to the listing | Nov 2026 |
These are examples of what the labels can mean, not a universal ranking of protection. The product descriptions establish construction and storage features, not comparative impact performance. Product availability, colors and prices can vary by seller; no price is included here because none is established in the cited product details.

The quick choice is about the whole carry setup. If the console usually travels inside a larger everyday bag and you mainly want a zippered place for the system and games, start with the PowerA Slim Case. If you want a handle, a described sturdy or hard shell, or compartments for smaller items, compare the PowerA Protection Case and RDS Deluxe Travel Case. If you intend to bring a broad set of accessories, a larger bag such as Belkin’s Travel Bag is a different category from a fitted console case.
Do not compare these options by their names alone. “Slim” does not mean an on-console cover, and “travel” does not establish a particular safety standard. Look for the actual compatibility statement, construction description, dimensions and listed capacity for the precise model you are considering.

What is the difference between a slim case and a travel case?
A slim case prioritizes a lower-profile way to carry the console, while a travel case may add a more substantial outer shell, a handle or space for accessories. The exact construction and storage depend on the model, so the name alone does not tell you how much protection it provides.
The PowerA Slim Case is a zippered carrying case, not a shell that stays attached to the console during play. PowerA describes it as low-profile, lined and molded, and lists exterior dimensions of 12.2 × 5.91 × 1.57 inches. The maker says it holds up to 10 game cards and includes a play-stand flap that doubles as a padded cover when the console is inside.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a travel-oriented alternative, Nintendo’s listing describes the PowerA Protection Case as having a sturdy outer shell, a handle, a pocket for small accessories, nine game-card slots and space for two microSD Express cards. The RDS Industries Game Traveler Deluxe listing describes a hard shell and recessed insert. Neither description, by itself, establishes how either case performs in a drop or impact.
“Slim” and “travel” are useful shopping shorthand, not formal categories with a shared test standard. A case marketed for travel is not automatically more protective than every slim case, and a molded or padded interior does not tell you how the case will perform in a specific accident. Compare documented design features and fit rather than treating a label as a guarantee.
Construction language is worth reading carefully. “Lined,” “molded,” “sturdy outer shell,” “hard shell” and “recessed insert” describe design features, but they do not provide a common scale for comparing cases. One maker’s use of “sturdy” cannot be converted into a specific drop height or a guarantee against damage. In the absence of a relevant test result for the exact model, use those terms to understand what the product is made to offer, not to predict a particular accident outcome.
The carrying format is a separate decision from impact performance. A handle may make a case easier to pick up or remove from luggage, and a pocket can keep small items together; neither feature says anything by itself about shock resistance. Conversely, a slim case can still be a useful way to keep the console covered and contained while it is stored in a larger bag. Choose for the job you actually need it to do.
Is a slim case enough for Switch 2?
It can be a sensible choice if your main goal is to carry the console and a few games in a daily bag, and you do not need space for a charger or other large gear. If the case will be packed tightly with heavy items, or you want a handle and accessory organization, consider a model that documents those features—but don’t treat “travel case” as a verified impact rating.
PowerA lists the Slim Case’s outside dimensions, card capacity and padded flap, but the product page does not provide a comparative drop-test result. Those specifications help you assess bulk and basic storage; they cannot answer how the case would fare in a particular fall. The cited product details do not establish a comparative drop-survival statistic for these examples.

Also distinguish a carrying case from an on-console protective shell. The Slim Case zips around the console for storage and transport; it is not described as something that protects the Switch 2 while you play without the case. If you need protection during use, that is a separate accessory decision.
For an everyday commute or a short outing, ask whether the case needs to carry anything beyond the console and games. PowerA states capacity for up to 10 game cards, which may be ample if you switch between several games, but the case’s exterior dimensions still add volume to the bag. Consider the space available in your backpack and whether you will be carrying other bulky objects alongside it. The published exterior measurements tell you the case’s overall size; they do not give the usable interior clearance.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A slim option may be less suitable if your routine involves packing a charger, dock or a broader collection of accessories. The Slim Case’s game-card capacity does not imply room for those larger items, and the flap’s padding does not turn it into a hard case. If those needs matter, compare cases or bags whose listings explicitly describe the relevant storage rather than relying on a product photo or a broad “travel” label.
Will a case for the original Switch fit Switch 2?
Do not assume it will. Nintendo says Switch 2 is larger than the original Switch, and its official specifications give approximate dimensions of 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide and 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached. The maximum thickness at the protruding controls is 1.2 inches. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications, then confirm that a case explicitly supports Switch 2 and leaves room around its sticks and triggers.
The 0.55-inch body thickness is not the only measurement that matters: the controls extend farther. A case that appears wide enough based on the console’s body alone may still be a poor fit around protruding controls. Look for the exact model’s compatibility claim and, when dimensions are provided, assess clearance around those points rather than comparing only one measurement.
There is no contradiction between Nintendo describing Switch 2 as larger and certain cases claiming support for multiple generations. Compatibility is specific to the case: the Nintendo-listed PowerA Protection Case and RDS Deluxe Travel Case both claim compatibility across more than one Switch generation. That does not establish that an arbitrary older case will fit.
Recommended Free Tools
When checking an older case, do not rely only on whether its zipper closes or whether its product title mentions “Switch.” Look for an explicit Switch 2 compatibility statement on the exact product listing. A case may have enough space in one direction while still pressing against a stick, trigger or other protruding control. A snug fit is not useful if the console has to be forced into place or if the controls bear pressure when the case is closed.
Nintendo’s approximate dimensions are context for shopping, not a substitute for the case maker’s own fit statement. The listed 4.5-inch height and 10.7-inch width are given with Joy-Con 2 attached; the 1.2-inch maximum at the controls is especially relevant when assessing depth. Use all of that information rather than comparing an old case’s advertised interior width with only the console’s thinner central body.

Can a Switch 2 case hold the charger or dock?
Do not infer that it can from a small-accessory pocket or game-card storage. The PowerA Protection Case listing describes a pocket for small accessories, and the Slim Case lists game-card capacity, but those details do not confirm room for a wall charger or dock.
Belkin distinguishes a fitted Travel Case from a larger Travel Bag intended to organize more gear. That is a useful distinction when deciding how much to pack: a console case and a bag for a broader kit are different carrying jobs. Still, verify the exact product’s stated dimensions and capacity before planning to carry a charger, dock or other bulky item. The cited product details do not establish that the cases discussed here fit those items.
Think of a small-accessory pocket as an indication that the maker expects space for compact items, not as a promise that every accessory fits. The PowerA Protection Case listing mentions small accessories; it does not identify the pocket as charger-sized. Likewise, slots for game cards and microSD Express cards are dedicated storage, not general-purpose room that can be counted toward a charger or dock.
If you need a complete travel setup, decide what the case must hold before comparing models. A console-only case may be the right fit if the charger stays elsewhere. If you want one container for more of your kit, look at a larger bag designed to organize additional gear, then check its listed dimensions and capacity. Belkin’s distinction between a fitted Travel Case and a larger Travel Bag is helpful precisely because those products serve different packing needs; it does not confirm that any particular case holds a particular charger or dock.
Does a padded screen flap replace a screen protector?
No. The Slim Case’s padded flap covers the display while the console is stored inside the closed case; it is not an applied protector attached to the screen. A screen protector is a separate layer applied to the display, and it does not replace a closed carrying case’s protection for the rest of the console during transit.
PowerA lists a separate Protection Case Kit that includes two applied screen protectors. That is distinct from the Slim Case’s padded flap. If you want both kinds of coverage, check what comes with the specific case or kit rather than assuming that “padded” means a screen film is included.
The difference is about where each layer sits and what it covers. The padded flap is part of the carrying case and covers the display while the console is inside for storage. An applied protector sits on the screen itself. It can therefore be present when the console is being used outside its case, while the flap is not. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other: a film does not enclose the console during transport, and a flap is not an applied screen protector.
When shopping, check whether a listing describes an included applied screen protector or only a padded interior feature. The Protection Case Kit is a separate product listing with two applied screen protectors; that does not mean the Slim Case includes them. If you plan to use both a carrying case and a screen protector, verify the contents of each item you buy.

How should you choose?
Start with what you carry and where the console goes. A minimal-bulk everyday setup points toward a slim zippered case; a trip involving a crowded backpack or luggage may make a shell, handle or dedicated accessory organization more useful. Then check Switch 2 compatibility, the space around the controls, and whether the listed storage matches the items you actually plan to bring.
- Confirm the model. Look for an explicit Switch 2 compatibility statement. Older Switch cases are not automatically suitable just because the consoles share a product family.
- Check fit beyond the console body. Use Nintendo’s dimensions—including the 1.2-inch maximum thickness at protruding controls—as context. Do not judge clearance from the 0.55-inch body thickness alone.
- Match storage to your kit. Compare stated game-card and microSD Express capacity, and distinguish a small-accessory pocket from confirmed space for a charger or dock.
- Choose the carrying format. Prefer a slim case for a lower-profile console-and-games setup. Look for a travel case or larger travel bag when you need a handle, a more substantial described shell or room to organize more gear.
- Keep protection claims in proportion. A product description can document a shell, lining or padded flap, but those details are not a comparative drop rating unless the maker supplies a relevant test result.
One listed capacity deserves special care: the RDS Deluxe Travel Case description says 12 game cards, while its features describe two four-card cases. Because those statements do not agree, do not rely on an exact RDS capacity without checking the current product details with the seller or manufacturer.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →It can also help to make a short packing list before choosing. If that list is the console and several games, the Slim Case’s stated capacity of up to 10 game cards and its lower-profile positioning may fit the brief. If the list includes microSD Express cards and small items as well, the PowerA Protection Case listing specifically states nine game cards, two microSD Express cards and a small-accessory pocket. If you need more gear than those listings establish, look at a larger travel bag rather than assuming a fitted case will expand to accommodate it.
Finally, separate “easy to carry” from “protection proven.” A handle, shell or recessed insert may be useful design features for the way you pack and retrieve the console. But unless the listing gives a relevant test result, those descriptions do not establish the outcome of a drop. Buy according to the documented construction and the fit you need, while keeping expectations about impact performance modest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How we picked these examples
The comparison uses the documented details in the cited Nintendo and manufacturer listings: construction, stated Switch 2 or multi-generation compatibility, exterior size where given, and storage features. It does not rank cases by drop performance because the cited product pages provide no comparative drop-test result. The examples illustrate the trade-offs behind slim and travel-oriented designs; they are not a claim that one model suits every trip.
Where a product listing gives a number, the article identifies what that number refers to: the Slim Case’s measurements are exterior dimensions, and the listed game and microSD Express storage are counted separately. Where product descriptions conflict, as with the RDS Deluxe Travel Case’s card capacity, the discrepancy is called out instead of selecting one number as definitive. That distinction matters when a buyer is trying to compare actual space rather than marketing category.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are microSD Express cards the same as Switch 2 game cards?
No. The PowerA Protection Case listing counts nine game cards and two microSD Express cards as separate storage items. Its wording does not suggest that the microSD slots are extra game-card slots.
Does the RDS Deluxe case definitely hold 12 game cards?
The listing is inconsistent: its description says 12, but its feature details describe two four-card cases. Treat the precise capacity as uncertain unless the current product information clarifies it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo the listed case dimensions describe the space inside?
The Slim Case’s 12.2 × 5.91 × 1.57-inch figures are published as exterior dimensions. They do not establish the usable interior clearance, so use the stated Switch 2 compatibility claim rather than assuming the interior matches those measurements.
Is a slim case enough for Switch 2?
It can be enough for carrying the console and games in an everyday bag if you do not need room for larger accessories. Consider a case with documented shell, handle or accessory-storage features for a crowded backpack or luggage, but do not treat the travel-case label as a drop-test rating.
Do I need a travel case for my Switch 2?
Not necessarily. Choose based on your packing routine: a slim carrying case suits a console-and-games setup, while a travel-oriented case may offer a handle, a described sturdier shell or small-item organization. Check the specific model’s compatibility and features.
Will my old Switch case fit Switch 2?
Do not assume so. Nintendo says Switch 2 is larger than the original Switch. Check for explicit Switch 2 compatibility and clearance around the Joy-Con 2 controls. Some newly listed cases claim compatibility across multiple generations, but that does not make every older case suitable.
Can a Switch 2 case hold the charger or dock?
The small-accessory pocket and card slots described for the PowerA Protection Case do not confirm space for a charger or dock. Check the exact case’s stated capacity, or consider a larger travel bag if you need to organize more gear.
Is the padded screen flap a screen protector?
No. The Slim Case flap covers the display while the console is stored inside the case. An applied screen protector sits on the display itself; the two are different accessories, and neither replaces a closed case for carrying the whole console.
Does a hard-shell travel case have a tested drop rating?
The cited product descriptions identify features such as a sturdy outer shell or hard shell, but they do not establish a comparative drop-survival result. Do not infer a specific impact rating unless the maker provides a relevant test for that exact model.
The Bottom Line
For a lower-profile everyday setup, the PowerA Slim Case is the clearer fit: it is a zippered Switch 2 carrying case with a padded flap and capacity for up to 10 game cards. For travel with small accessories, a handle or a described sturdier shell, compare the PowerA Protection Case or RDS Deluxe Travel Case—but verify fit and capacity details, especially the conflicting RDS card count. Choose documented features, not the case label, and do not treat any of these descriptions as proof of drop performance.
