Some original Nintendo Switch accessories work with Switch 2, but compatibility is selective and does not run both ways. Original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, while the original dock cannot be reused for Switch 2 TV mode and ordinary microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games. In the other direction, Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller do not work with the original Switch. The key is to check the accessory’s specific job—connecting, attaching, charging, powering a dock, or storing games—rather than assume an accessory works just because it fits the same product family.
Which original Switch accessories work with Switch 2?
Several original controllers and game-specific accessories remain useful, but some only work wirelessly or with their original Joy-Con. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance is the best model-specific reference; compatibility does not mean physical fit, charging support, or support in every game.

| Accessory | Original Switch accessory on Switch 2 | Switch 2 accessory on original Switch | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con | Original Joy-Con work wirelessly. | Joy-Con 2 do not work. | Original Joy-Con cannot attach to or charge on Switch 2. |
| Pro Controller | The original Pro Controller works wirelessly. | The Switch 2 Pro Controller does not work. | The original model lacks the newer controller’s C and GL/GR buttons. |
| Joy-Con straps, grips, and wheels | Original fitted accessories remain usable with original Joy-Con. | Newer fitted parts do not fit original Joy-Con. | Match the accessory to the controller it was designed for. |
| Dock | The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. | Interchangeability of the Switch 2 dock with original Switch is not established here. | Do not infer compatibility from similar appearance. |
| AC adapter | The original adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power its dock for TV mode. | The Switch 2 AC adapter works with original Switch. | Direct charging and powering a TV-mode dock are different uses. |
| Storage card | Ordinary microSD: captures only. microSD Express: Switch 2 game storage. | microSD Express works at ordinary microSD speeds. | Check for the Express marking; ordinary microSD is not Switch 2 game storage. |
| Ring-Con and Leg Strap | Usable with original Joy-Con and the supported games. | They are not Joy-Con 2 attachments. | The accessories depend on original Joy-Con, not just the console. |
| Older GameCube controller and adapter | Usable through the adapter on the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. | The new wireless GameCube Controller is Switch 2-only. | Do not confuse older wired controllers with Nintendo’s newer wireless product. |
The table’s distinction between the two generations is intentional: Nintendo explicitly says original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can work with Switch 2, but its FAQ says Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with original Switch. That does not establish that every old accessory—or every accessory from another manufacturer—will work.
Can I use my old Joy-Con on Switch 2?
Yes. Original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but they do not attach to the console’s sides and cannot charge while attached to it. Nintendo explains the compatibility limits in its Switch 2 accessory guidance.

How to keep original Joy-Con charged
Charge original Joy-Con using an original Switch, a compatible original-Joy-Con charging grip, or a compatible two-way charging stand. A Switch 2 charging grip is designed for Joy-Con 2; it is not a substitute for an original-Joy-Con charging accessory. If you are keeping old Joy-Con but no longer have an original console, an accessory explicitly made for original Joy-Con addresses that charging gap.
Original Joy-Con straps, grips, wheels, and AA battery packs are likewise designed around the original controllers. They remain useful with those controllers on Switch 2 where the game supports the relevant control, but they are not interchangeable with Joy-Con 2. The reverse is also true: newer fitted straps and grips do not accept original Joy-Con. The attachment systems differ—original Joy-Con use rails, while Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically—so wireless compatibility does not imply a physical fit.

The original Ring-Con and Leg Strap remain usable on Switch 2 for their respective supported games, provided you use original Joy-Con. They are not Joy-Con 2 accessories. If your plan is to use them with an existing game, the relevant question is whether you have the original controllers the accessories were built around, not whether the newer console can pair with them.
Can I use the original Pro Controller on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, and it can charge over USB from the Switch 2 dock. That makes it a practical way to reuse a controller for games that support it, rather than buying another controller solely for basic wireless compatibility.

It does not gain the newer Switch 2 Pro Controller’s C and GL/GR buttons. If a game or feature requires one of those newer controls, the original controller does not provide it. The reverse pairing is not supported: Nintendo says the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch. Check the game’s controller requirements when a particular button or feature matters.
Will my original Switch dock, charger, or HDMI cable work?
The original dock does not work with Switch 2. Nintendo states, “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo sells a separate Switch 2 Dock Set for a replacement or additional TV setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCharger: distinguish console charging from TV mode
The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot power the Switch 2 dock for TV mode. Conversely, Nintendo says the Switch 2 AC adapter works with both console generations. A charger that can supply power to a handheld console is not necessarily suitable for powering a dock and connected TV setup; do not treat those jobs as interchangeable.
If the goal is Switch 2 TV mode, use the Switch 2 dock and its appropriate power setup. If the goal is simply to charge the console directly, Nintendo’s guidance allows the original adapter for that purpose. This is a narrower exception than saying the old charging equipment works with the new console in general.

HDMI cable
Nintendo lists the original included HDMI cable as incompatible for Switch 2 and recommends using the HDMI cable included with Switch 2. That designation should not be stretched into a claim that the old cable fails on every display or in every situation; it means Nintendo does not list it as compatible for the new setup. Avoid assuming that a cable or dock is suitable based on connector shape alone.
Do I need a new microSD card for Switch 2?
For expanded Switch 2 game storage, yes: the card must be microSD Express. An ordinary microSD card used with an original Switch does not become game storage for Switch 2. Nintendo says an ordinary card can still be used to view or import original-Switch captures, while an Express card works in both systems. See Nintendo Australia’s microSD and microSD Express guidance.
How to choose and use the card
- For Switch 2 games: look for “microSD Express” on the card. Nintendo’s Australian guidance states support for capacities up to 2TB; that figure is from Nintendo Australia, verified in 2026, and the page’s publication year is not stated.
- For original-Switch captures: an ordinary microSD card can be used to view or import captures, but it is not the card type for Switch 2 game storage.
- For use in both consoles: a microSD Express card also works in original Switch, but at ordinary microSD speeds there.
- For first use on Switch 2: Nintendo says the system needs an internet system update before a microSD Express card can be used for the first time.
Nintendo of America’s accessories catalog names a Samsung microSD Express Card at 256GB for Switch 2. That is a named product capacity, not a claim that 256GB is required or that a particular card is available at a particular price. Check the Express label and the console’s current on-screen requirements rather than buying an ordinary microSD card because it worked in the older system.
Which older controllers and game accessories still work?
Some legacy accessories work, but controller compatibility can depend on the game and the connection method. Older NES, SNES, N64, and SEGA Genesis controllers are listed by Nintendo as wirelessly usable on Switch 2 for compatible games. Their charging arrangements differ: NES controllers need an original Switch or a suitable charging accessory, while the other listed controllers can charge by USB from the Switch 2 dock.

Older GameCube controllers are another distinct case. Nintendo says they can be used through the GameCube Controller Adapter connected to the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. That is not the same product as Nintendo’s newer wireless GameCube Controller, which is Switch 2-only. If you already own older wired GameCube controllers and the adapter, preserve that distinction before replacing either item.
Nintendo’s UK guidance also says original controllers cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep by pressing their HOME buttons. In other words, a controller may work after the console is active without providing every convenience available from a controller made for the newer system. Consider this if you intend to use an older controller as your only controller.
Will my old case, screen protector, or camera fit?
Switch 2 is larger than the original Switch, and Nintendo sells a carrying case and screen protector sized for the newer console. That does not establish that every older case is unusable: compare the old case’s stated internal dimensions with the new console before relying on it. A case can appear close in size but still be a poor fit, while an accessory’s actual dimensions are more useful than its product-family label.
The dedicated Switch 2 Camera is optional for video features. Nintendo says another USB-C camera may work, but also warns that some devices are unsupported or unstable; no unnamed webcam should be treated as guaranteed compatible. To check a connected camera, use System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test USB Camera. Nintendo’s camera guidance is the relevant reference for that test and its qualification.

How should I decide whether to reuse or replace an accessory?
Start with the task, then check the exact accessory model. A single item may be compatible for one purpose and not another: the original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly but cannot power its dock, and original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly but cannot attach to or charge on the console. A quick check against Nintendo’s model-specific guidance can prevent buying a replacement for an accessory that still works—or relying on one that does not.
- Identify the generation and model. Determine whether you have original Joy-Con, a Switch 2 controller, an original dock, or another specific accessory. Similar names do not mean the same connector or capability.
- State the exact job you need it to do. Separate wireless play from physical attachment, direct charging from dock power, and capture access from game storage.
- Check the direction of compatibility. A result for an original accessory on Switch 2 does not prove that a newer accessory works on original Switch.
- Check game or feature support. Older controllers and game-specific attachments may only work with supported titles or features.
- Replace only where the limitation matters. For example, retain an original Pro Controller if wireless play is sufficient; choose a charging accessory made for original Joy-Con if those controllers need charging without an original console.
For storage, the model distinction is especially easy to miss: “microSD” alone is not the requirement for Switch 2 game storage; the card must be microSD Express. For a second TV setup, the old dock is not a reuse option, and Nintendo lists a Switch 2 Dock Set among its accessories. For a retained wired GameCube controller, the adapter and TV-mode dock matter. These are different purchasing decisions, not one blanket “old accessories work” or “nothing is compatible” rule.

What is the safest overall compatibility rule?
Reuse original accessories only where Nintendo identifies the specific accessory and use as compatible. The clearest carryovers are original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller for wireless play, plus selected game accessories when paired with original Joy-Con. The clearest replacements are the dock for TV mode and the storage card for Switch 2 games. On the reverse path, Switch 2 controllers are not supported by original Switch; do not assume compatibility in either direction without a model-specific statement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can original NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis controllers pair with Switch 2?
Nintendo lists older NES, SNES, N64, and SEGA Genesis controllers as wirelessly usable on Switch 2 for compatible games. Charging differs by model: NES controllers need an original Switch or suitable charging accessory, while the others can charge by USB from the Switch 2 dock.
Can I wake Switch 2 with the HOME button on an original controller?
No. Nintendo UK’s guidance says original controllers cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep with their HOME buttons. That limitation is separate from whether a controller can be used wirelessly once the console is active.
Does Nintendo publish a third-party accessory success rate for Switch 2?
Nintendo’s compatibility documents do not publish a success rate, failure rate, or tested percentage covering third-party accessories. Compatibility should therefore be checked for the specific accessory model and purpose, rather than inferred from a general percentage.
