For a first save in Football Manager 26 on PC or Mac, change only a few things at first: enable rolling autosaves, make the interface readable, choose match highlights and speed that let you follow the action, and check how the game advances when you are away from the keyboard. Before creating the save, review Advanced Settings: the official FM26 guide says its listed choices cannot be changed once a save has been created. These FM26 paths are not confirmed for FM27, Console, Touch or Mobile.
Which settings should a beginner change first?
Start with settings that protect progress or make the game easier to understand, rather than searching for a winning preset. In FM26, ordinary Preferences cover options such as saving, display and Match Day presentation; they are separate from the Advanced Settings chosen while creating a save. The official FM26 first-save guide says the Advanced Settings it lists cannot be amended after save creation. That warning does not mean all Preferences are locked.

On PC or Mac, open the Settings icon and choose Preferences. The FM26 preferences guide groups its detailed controls under Your World, Audio and Visual, Accessibility, Match Day and Processing. You do not need to change every option in those sections. Begin with save protection and legibility, then adjust match presentation and progression if the defaults do not suit you.
- Enable rolling autosaves. An independent FM26 Preferences guide recommends weekly autosaves with three rolling files. Treat that cadence as a practical suggestion, not a universal optimum: more frequent saves can protect more recent progress, while adding save events and files.
- Set familiar display choices. Choose a language, currency, wage display and date format you can interpret quickly. These are comprehension preferences, not documented tactical advantages.
- Make text and navigation legible. Adjust text and color presentation to your needs. If you often miss links in inbox messages, consider the highlighted-hyperlinks option; if menus feel visually busy or sluggish, consider reducing UI transitions.
- Choose a match pace you can follow. Start with enough highlight detail and time during action to recognize events and make decisions. You can shorten highlights or increase the speed between them later if matches take too long.
- Review processing behavior. Check Continue Game Timeout and decide whether you want the game to progress automatically while you are not responding.
These are starting points, not a mandatory preset. The preferences guide is a useful reference for locating and understanding the FM26 labels, but the best display and accessibility choices depend on what helps you read and control the game.

How should I set autosaves and other Preferences?
Use autosaves as a safety net, then set the interface to present information in a form you can readily understand. The independent FM26 guide recommends enabling autosave, choosing a weekly interval and keeping three rolling files. That recommendation is a reasonable starting cadence, but the source does not establish it as the best choice for every player or save.
Balance save protection with interruptions
A more frequent autosave can preserve a more recent point in the season if something goes wrong, but it also means more save events. Rolling files retain several recent save versions rather than relying on one constantly replaced autosave. Decide how much interruption you will tolerate and how much recent history you want available; do not assume that the suggested weekly, three-file setup is an official requirement.
Autosaves are not a reason to skip deliberate saving when you are about to stop playing or want to preserve a particular point. The available guidance supports rolling autosaves as a preference, but does not specify a separate backup policy or promise recovery from every kind of problem.
Choose familiar formats, not someone else’s defaults
Language, currency, wage units and date presentation can affect how quickly you understand the information in front of you. Pick formats you recognize, especially if you are new to following transfer fees, contracts or the in-game calendar. The point is to reduce interpretation friction; the guide does not identify a format as inherently better for every player.
Readability controls are similarly personal. Increase text legibility or adjust color presentation if information is difficult to distinguish. The preferences guide also identifies commentary-color and color-blind presentation options. These should be chosen according to your own needs, rather than turned on or off as a universal beginner rule. Highlighted hyperlinks may help if inbox links are easy to overlook. UI Transitions are another optional adjustment if animated menus feel distracting or slow to navigate.
Which Match Day settings make matches easier to follow?
Choose a level of highlight detail and pace that gives you enough time to understand what is happening. FM26’s preferences guide distinguishes Extended from Key highlights, and separates speed during highlights from speed between them; these choices trade viewing detail and decision time against match length.

Pick highlights for the decisions you want to make
Extended highlights show more of the match than Key highlights, so they are a sensible place to start if you want time to see how situations develop. Key highlights shorten the viewing experience by focusing on selected moments. Neither is a documented tactical buff: a shorter presentation does not itself make a team better, and more screen time is not proof of better results.
Dynamic Highlights are another presentation preference, not a required beginner feature. If you are unsure, start with a format that leaves you comfortable recognizing events and making interventions, then adjust after you have a feel for how much detail you want. Avoid changing both highlight type and speed aggressively at once; changing one at a time makes it easier to tell which presentation suits you.
Separate action speed from the time between highlights
Match speed during highlights affects how quickly the visible action plays. Speed between highlights affects how quickly the game moves through stretches that are not being shown. If you find it difficult to follow an event, reduce the speed during highlights. If you can follow the action but are waiting too long between moments, increase the between-highlight speed or use shorter highlights.
There is no source-supported universal speed setting or measured improvement from a particular combination. Treat the controls as ways to shape the pace of viewing, not as a way to improve the match engine or compensate for a tactical problem.
What should I do if the match graphics strain my computer?
If the system appears to be working hard during matches, adjust graphics controls before considering hardware changes. SEGA Support’s guidance points to lowering graphics quality and adjusting Match Day render scale, mesh detail, shadows, textures and anti-aliasing.
Make a modest change, then see whether it addresses the particular problem. Lowering visual detail can reduce rendering demand, but it also changes how the match looks; the aim is a workable balance, not maximum quality at any cost. The support advice does not establish that every performance symptom has the same cause or that a particular setting will fix every computer.

Do not confuse rendering demand with simulation speed. The official FM26 first-save guide says the Estimated Game Speed indicator reflects the leagues and players in the game world as well as computer performance. Graphics controls address Match Day rendering; trimming the game world addresses a different set of demands. Neither source provides a percentage improvement or a benchmark for a particular setting combination.
How do I stop the game advancing when I do not want it to?
Review Continue Game Timeout in Preferences if you do not want the game to continue automatically after a period without input. Continue Button Legacy Mode is an optional behavior for players who prefer to wait for inbox messages before advancing; it is not necessary for everyone.

These controls matter because accidental progression can move you past information you intended to read or act on. Choose the behavior that matches how you handle inbox items: if you want more deliberate control over when the calendar advances, inspect the timeout and legacy-mode options rather than assuming that the default suits you.
Players also discuss labels such as “Must respond messages” and “Show fixtures and results screens.” A player discussion can help identify the phrases people search for, but it does not establish that every beginner should enable those options. Confirm the exact labels in your edition before looking for them. An official FM26 update index says a Continue Game Timeout preference defect was fixed in update 26.1.2; that does not establish that every installation has the update or that the same behavior applies to other editions.
What should I decide before creating my first save?
Choose the size and rules of your game world before starting, because some save-creation choices are not ordinary changeable Preferences. The official FM26 guide presents Quick Start as a ready-made setup and Advanced Setup as the route for choosing nations, leagues, database depth and transfer mode. If you do not have a specific reason to customize those options, Quick Start avoids turning setup into a long list of unfamiliar decisions.
Use Estimated Game Speed to judge the world you are building
When using Advanced Setup, the Estimated Game Speed indicator reflects the chosen leagues, the players included and the computer’s performance. It is a decision aid, not a guarantee of how fast every future save will feel. There is no universal recommended league count in the official guidance, so use the indicator and your priorities rather than copying an arbitrary number.

Playable and view-only leagues provide different levels of involvement and simulation detail. A playable league is for managing in that competition; view-only leagues let the world include competitions without making them available in the same way for management. Consider whether you actually want to manage in a nation before loading it as playable. A larger player database and more included leagues can add breadth, while the game-speed estimate makes clear that world size and processing are linked.
Football Manager’s 2025 official guide lists 58 men’s nations and 11 women’s nations among FM26 Active Nations options. Those figures describe the available choices in that guide; they are not a recommendation to load all of them. More options make a broader world possible, but a first save need not include every competition.
Check the Advanced Settings that are locked after save creation
The official tutorial explicitly says of its listed Advanced Settings: “NOTE: These cannot be amended once a save has been created.” Review the choices before you confirm the new save:
- Use Fake Players and Staff: decide whether the save should use generated people rather than the real-player and staff setup.
- Use Real Fixtures: choose whether to use real fixtures as described by the option. The guide does not identify one choice as right for every save.
- Add Key Staff: decide whether the setup should add key staff.
- Add Players to Playable Teams: review whether players should be added to playable teams.
- Allow First Transfer Window Activity: this determines whether transfers can take place in the opening window. Choose based on whether you want that first-window activity in your save.
- Allow Player Attribute Masking: with masking, you need scouting to reveal attributes that are not yet known. Decide whether you want that scouting layer or prefer attributes to be visible without it.
- Allow control of teams with managers in place: review whether you want the option to control teams that already have managers.
- Allow use of the In-Game Editor: decide at setup whether the save should allow use of that editor.
The key distinction is not that one selection is universally correct; it is that these choices shape the save and, according to the official guide, cannot be amended once it exists. In particular, attribute masking changes what information is immediately visible, while first-window activity changes whether transfers happen in that opening period. Read each option’s in-game explanation before committing if its effect is unclear.

Use the interface’s search and built-in help tools when you do not know what an option or screen does. FM26’s official interface guide describes search, FMPedia and customizable bookmarks as ways to navigate and find information; they are navigation aids, not settings that make matches easier.
The interface guide says FM26 starts with six bookmarks and offers 24 bookmark options. Those numbers describe bookmark availability, not a required configuration. Customize bookmarks around the screens you revisit, and use search or FMPedia when you need an unfamiliar term or destination. It is usually more useful to learn one control when a question arises than to alter every obscure preference before you have encountered it.

Staff Responsibilities are a separate workload and delegation system, not a Preferences toggle. Official FM26 update notes mention delegated opposition instructions and press-conference summaries; if your goal is to reduce managerial workload, look at the relevant responsibilities rather than expecting a display setting to delegate tasks.
Do these FM26 settings apply to every version?
No. The specific paths and labels above are supported for Football Manager 26 on PC and Mac; they should not be silently treated as confirmed instructions for FM27 or for Console, Touch or Mobile. The official Football Manager site displayed an FM27 Launch Preview as of October 30, 2026, so FM26-specific interface details may not match a later edition.

Before following a path, confirm the game edition and platform shown in your own menus. If a named option is absent or worded differently, use the in-game search or help instead of assuming it has the same label. This is particularly important for Preferences and match controls, where the cited detailed guidance concerns FM26 rather than every platform or future release.
What is the sensible beginner setup in practice?

Can I use the mouse and keyboard for Football Manager on PC or Mac?
The FM26 preferences guide discusses mouse-and-keyboard users when describing radial-menu behavior. A wired USB mouse is only an optional input device if you need one; it does not change autosaving, simulation or graphics performance.
Are the FM26 preference labels the same in FM27?
