When Apple rolls out a new iOS version, the Home Screen icon set can change in small but noticeable ways—colors, shapes, padding, and sometimes the icon style used by default system apps.
This guide shows you exactly how to confirm what the iOS 26 app icons look like on your own iPhone home screen, using repeatable steps and fallbacks when the update doesn’t seem to “take” visually.

What iOS 26 app icon changes actually mean
In iOS 26, Apple may update the artwork for built-in (system) apps and/or adjust the icon styling rules the system uses. Your iPhone will always apply those changes to default icons that are owned and rendered by iOS.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Third-party apps typically keep their own icons. Even if you install iOS 26, your apps downloaded from the App Store will only change when the app developers publish an updated icon for the new iOS style guidelines.
Prerequisites before you try to view the new icons
- A compatible iPhone that can run iOS 26 (check Apple’s system requirements on the device’s update screen).
- Enough storage to install the update (iOS will prompt you if space is tight).
- Backups turned on before major upgrades (iCloud Backup or a Finder/iTunes backup on a computer).
- A known baseline: take one quick screenshot of your current Home Screen layout so you can compare after the update.
Method 1: Update to iOS 26 and verify icons on your Home Screen
This is the direct method: install iOS 26, then verify the updated icons where you actually use them—on the Home Screen grid.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap General → Software Update.
- Choose Download and Install for iOS 26 (or install the available build if you’re on a beta).
- After the update finishes, unlock your iPhone and confirm you’re on iOS 26 by checking Settings → General → About → Software Version.
- Go to your Home Screen and look at the default icons for built-in apps (for example: Apple’s default Calendar, Photos, Clock, Maps, and Settings).
- For a clean comparison, take another screenshot of the same Home Screen area you photographed before the update.
Method 2: Force a clean Home Screen refresh (when icons don’t appear)
Sometimes the Home Screen layout and icon artwork can look “stuck,” especially after an update over a heavily customized layout. This method aims to refresh the system’s icon state without breaking your workflow.

- Tap General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose Reset.
- Tap Reset Home Screen Layout.
- Confirm when prompted. Your icons may reorganize, but you’ll often see the newest default icon artwork immediately.
- Re-check the Home Screen icons and compare against your post-update screenshot.
If you’re using a custom layout, plan to re-place shortcuts and folders afterward.
Method 3: Compare Light vs Dark Mode and focus on the right variant
Icon artwork can look different depending on the system appearance. If your Home Screen background or appearance is in a different state than before, it may look like icons didn’t update—when only the variant changed.

- Go to Settings → Display & Brightness.
- Toggle Appearance between Light and Dark.
- Return to your Home Screen and inspect the same icons in both modes.
- If you use Automatic, set a temporary fixed mode so you can compare without changes happening during the test.
Method 4: Use App Library as a reliable “truth view”
If your Home Screen looks inconsistent, the App Library can make it easier to verify what iOS is currently providing as the default icon artwork for built-in apps.
- Swipe left on your Home Screen to open the App Library.
- Use the search bar (if available) to find a built-in app you know should have updated artwork.
- Compare the App Library icon to the Home Screen icon for the same app.
- If App Library shows the new look but your Home Screen doesn’t, reset the Home Screen layout as in Method 2.
Method 5: Check whether your specific apps can change icons at all
Not every “app you see” is the same kind of icon. Some icons on your screen are shortcuts, not system icons—and shortcuts can keep their own artwork forever.
- Long-press an app icon you think should change.
- Tap Edit Home Screen (or look for whether the icon is a shortcut).
- If you see a shortcut-style configuration (or an icon that never changes even after updates), it may be a shortcut you created, not the system default app icon.
- To test quickly: delete the suspected shortcut from the Home Screen (you can keep the underlying app), then add the real default app icon from the app list so you’re comparing the correct icon source.
This matters most when you’ve customized icons using third-party icon packs or built your own shortcuts.
Where to look for the full icon set (without guessing)
The only guaranteed way to “see all the new app icons” is to rely on a source that lists every updated icon explicitly—usually an official Apple release image or an OS-level asset reference.

If the new iOS 26 icons don’t show up consistently, work through these fixes in order.
1) Reboot the iPhone
A standard restart can clear cached UI resources after an update. Power off, wait 20–30 seconds, then power back on.
2) Reset Home Screen Layout
If you customized your layout or folders heavily, the Home Screen can keep older icon state. Use Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Home Screen Layout.
3) Check whether you installed a beta build vs stable
Icon updates may vary between beta builds and final releases. Verify your exact Software Version in Settings → General → About.

- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.

4) Confirm you’re viewing system icons, not shortcuts
If you replaced a system icon with a shortcut, it won’t automatically adopt iOS 26’s default artwork. Remove or recreate the icon using the real system app entry.
5) Compare Light and Dark again
Some icons appear subtly different by appearance setting. Flip Display & Brightness and re-check.
6) As a last resort, reinstall the update
If the update went sideways (for example, you interrupted installation), re-run the software update process. If you’re on a beta, switch between available builds only as Apple recommends.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that stop the new iOS 26 icons from showing
- Comparing different modes: switching between Light and Dark (or different wallpapers/contrast settings) and assuming the icon didn’t change.
- Using shortcuts as your test subject: many icon packs and custom setups are shortcut-based, not system-default icons.
- Not verifying software version: people often land on a near-release beta build and assume it’s the full public version.
- Expecting third-party icons to update automatically: App Store icons only change when the developer ships an update.
- Ignoring App Library: the App Library can show the system-default icon even when your Home Screen layout looks stale.

Will a wallpaper change make the new icons look different?
Yes. Contrast and perceived color saturation change how icons “read,” especially in Dark Mode. For verification, compare against the same appearance mode and try multiple Home Screen backgrounds if you want a consistent view.
Can I keep my current layout and still get the new icons?
Often yes. If icons don’t refresh, try reboot first, then App Library verification. If you must reset layout, plan to re-arrange folders and widgets afterward.
What if my iPhone still shows the old icons after updating to iOS 26?
Start with a restart, confirm your Software Version, verify you’re seeing system icons (not shortcuts), and then use Reset Home Screen Layout.

Bottom Line
To see the new iOS 26 app icons on your iPhone home screen, update to iOS 26, then verify the icons in both Home Screen and App Library—while checking Light vs Dark mode. If the look doesn’t change, refresh the Home Screen layout and confirm you’re not testing shortcut-based icons.
If you share the source URL you’re referencing (Apple release assets, a screenshot gallery, or a website claim), I can validate whether it matches iOS 26 and whether it accurately reflects the icon set.
