NAS hard-drive prices vary sharply by model, capacity, seller and region—and a drive that is not supported by your NAS can be an expensive mistake. NASdisks’ October 2026 US catalogue puts its typical NAS HDD at $44 per terabyte, up from $21/TB in July 2024, but that is a tracked sample, not a universal market price. Before checkout, verify the exact drive part number against your NAS manufacturer’s compatibility list.

What do NAS hard drives cost per terabyte in October 2026?

NASdisks’ October 2026 US catalogue reports a typical price of $44/TB, compared with $21/TB in July 2024—a stated increase of 114%. NASdisks says its catalogue tracks the cheapest in-stock new Amazon offers and refreshes daily. Its latest-month sample covers 41 NAS drives with capacities of 8 TB and higher; it is not an official all-market index.

NASdisks attributes the roughly doubled prices to AI datacenter buildout absorbing hard-drive supply. That is the catalogue publisher’s explanation, not an independently established cause in the figures cited here. Treat the price trend as a useful snapshot, not proof of why every drive costs what it does. See NASdisks’ October 2026 US catalogue.

October 2026 examples from the US catalogue

Drive listed Snapshot price Price per TB
WD Red Plus, 8 TB $355 $44.37/TB
Seagate IronWolf, 12 TB $429 $35.75/TB
Seagate IronWolf Pro, 24 TB $860 $35.83/TB

These are volatile listing snapshots, not guaranteed prices. A larger drive can look cheaper per terabyte while costing more upfront; compare both the total price and the usable capacity after your chosen redundancy or RAID configuration. Usable capacity depends on the array you build, so there is no single figure that applies to every NAS.

Why a German suggested price is not a US street-price comparison

Seagate’s April 2026 German list gives suggested retail prices including local VAT: IronWolf ST8000VNZ02 at €327.99, ST12000VNZ008 at €479.99, and IronWolf Pro ST12000NTZ01 at €566.99. Those euro MSRPs are a different region and price type from US Amazon listing snapshots; they should not be compared as if they were current US checkout prices. Check Seagate’s manufacturer information.

How to avoid buying a drive your NAS does not support

Compatibility is specific to both the NAS enclosure and the drive. Match the manufacturer, exact NAS model, drive part number and capacity in the vendor’s compatibility resource before paying. Do not assume that one drive in a product family is approved just because a similar model appears on a list.

  1. Find the NAS model. Read the enclosure label or check the NAS administration interface and record the full model name.
  2. Identify the exact drive SKU. Use the full part number, including suffixes, and note its capacity and interface.
  3. Open the NAS vendor’s compatibility list. Search for that enclosure and check whether the exact drive model and capacity are listed. For Synology, start with its compatibility list.
  4. Review model-specific notices. Check for restrictions or notes attached to the drive entry, and confirm the current list close to purchase. Synology says its list may change and that it does not guarantee compatibility even for listed products.
  5. Recheck the exact item in the cart. Ensure the seller has not substituted a different part number and confirm the warranty terms for that product, region and seller.

Seagate gives the same practical advice: “Seagate recommends checking the NAS vendor’s compatibility list prior to purchasing a NAS hard drive.” A drive’s advertised NAS purpose is not a substitute for checking the enclosure maker’s list. Synology compatibility guidance.

What specifications matter beyond capacity?

Recording method

Check whether the exact drive model uses CMR recording rather than relying on a family name or capacity alone. WD’s September 2025 Red Plus datasheet identifies the models it covers as CMR. That specification should not be generalized to a different model or suffix without checking its own documentation. WD Red Plus product sheet.

Workload and bay class

WD describes the Red Plus models covered by that sheet for RAID-optimized NAS systems of up to eight bays, with a rated workload of 180 TB per year. Seagate describes IronWolf as intended for multi-bay NAS and rates it for workloads up to 180 TB per year. These are manufacturers’ product specifications—not independent comparisons of performance, reliability or failure rates. Seagate IronWolf product information.

Warranty

WD’s cited Red Plus sheet lists a three-year limited warranty. Confirm the warranty for the exact SKU, the sales region and the seller before buying; coverage can depend on those details. A workload rating and a warranty term describe different things and should not be read as a promise of a particular drive lifespan.

Which NAS drive should you buy?

There is no universal best NAS hard drive without knowing the NAS model and intended use. Start with drives the enclosure maker lists as compatible, then compare their exact capacity, recording method, intended bay class, price per terabyte, total cost and warranty. If a drive’s precise model number is not on the compatibility list, resolve that uncertainty with the NAS manufacturer before checkout rather than assuming a family-level match.

Recheck live prices on the day you buy: NASdisks’ figures are daily-updated listings, and the October 2026 values can change. A lower price per terabyte is useful only if the drive is compatible and its capacity and workload fit your actual array.
