To configure controls for Naruto: Rise of a Ninja on Steam Deck, first open the community Recomp project’s Settings → Controls menu and assign the game’s actions there. Add Steam Input remapping only if the game does not recognize a Deck or external-controller input, or if you need a keyboard shortcut on a Deck button. Start with an Xbox-style gamepad layout: the original game is an Xbox 360 title, and its documented XInput prompts use Xbox 360 button icons.
This is not an official Steam release. The current practical route is the community Recomp project, a work-in-progress PC port that provides Windows and Linux builds, including a Linux AppImage with Vulkan support. You must supply your own Xbox 360 ISO or complete extracted game copy; the project does not include the game data. Expect build-dependent behavior, bugs, crashes, or visual issues.

What do you need before configuring the controls?
Have the Recomp build you intend to use, the game data required by its first-run setup, and access to the Deck’s Steam menu if you later need Steam Input. The project documents both a Linux build and a Windows build that can be used through Proton on Linux. The Linux AppImage includes Vulkan support, but the project remains in progress, so the exact behavior and available options may change between builds.
- Game data: select your own Xbox 360 ISO or complete extracted game folder during first-run setup. The project does not provide the game itself.
- Controls: plan to configure the game’s own bindings first, then use Steam Input only for inputs the game does not handle as needed.
- Save safety: keep a backup of your saves before changing builds or experimenting with controller layers. The project warns users to expect bugs, crashes, and visual issues.
- Expectations: separate a control problem from a port or renderer problem. An inconsistent experience is not automatically evidence that your button mapping is wrong.
The project describes its native renderer as the default and newest renderer, while Xenos remains available through manual configuration if something does not look right. Renderer choice is a separate issue from assigning buttons; changing remaps is not a general fix for visual problems.

How should you configure the game’s controls first?
Use the Recomp project’s own Controls page as the primary mapping layer. This gives the game one clear set of bindings and reduces the chance that an in-game assignment conflicts with an additional Steam Input translation.
- Launch the Recomp project and complete its first-run selection of your own game data if you have not already done so.
- Open the in-game menu. The project documents F1 or Back + Start as menu shortcuts. Both shortcuts are remappable, so use the one available to you.
- Navigate to Settings → Controls. Assign the Deck’s recognized buttons or connected controller to the actions exposed by your current build.
- Save or apply the assignments using whatever controls the current build presents. The project documentation identifies the Controls page but does not establish a universal button chart or a save/apply label for every build.
- Check the actions in the game before adding another mapping layer. If the game receives the intended inputs, leave Steam Input at a simple gamepad layout or the default configuration rather than duplicating every binding.
If the Deck appears to the build as an SDL-compatible controller, prefer these in-game bindings. The project’s controls are version-dependent, so use the action names actually shown in your build instead of assuming every online layout or button chart still matches.

An Xbox-style gamepad layout is the most logical baseline because the original game is for Xbox 360 and its documented XInput behavior uses Xbox 360 prompts. Treat that as a starting point, not a verified universal chart: the exact actions available can depend on the Recomp build and its source files.
- Left stick: movement.
- Right stick: camera or viewpoint control, if your build exposes that action.
- Face buttons: begin with the assignments shown by the game’s Xbox-style prompts. Change a binding only when a specific action is awkward or does not register correctly.
- Shoulders and triggers: retain the game’s default combat and traversal functions before experimenting with alternate assignments.
- View/Menu or equivalent: keep access to the in-game menu shortcut and Steam overlay. Do not sacrifice a useful menu input just to add a duplicate action elsewhere.
The related PC manual explains that in XInput mode, gamepads behave similarly to an Xbox 360 controller, the game displays Xbox 360 controller icons regardless of the selected device, and controls cannot be customized in that mode. It describes DirectInput as the path that permits customization. That manual describes the PC gamepad behavior; do not assume every Recomp build exposes identical modes or labels. If your Recomp build provides its own Controls page, use that page for its available assignments.
When should you use Steam Input, and how do you set it up?
Use Steam Input when the game does not recognize an input natively, when you need to translate a Deck control into a keyboard or mouse input, or when you want a convenience binding such as the in-game menu shortcut. Avoid changing the same action in both Steam Input and the game unless you have a specific reason: layered remapping makes it harder to tell which layer caused a mismatch.
- Add the Recomp application to Steam as a non-Steam game if it is not already in your library.
- In Steam Deck Game Mode, open the game’s controller settings from the Steam menu.
- Choose a gamepad template such as Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad, or another template that exposes standard XInput controls. The exact template wording may vary with Steam’s interface.
- Map only missing or inconvenient inputs. For example, you can assign the documented F1 menu shortcut to a Deck button if the in-game shortcut is inaccessible through your current layout.
- Keep optional controls optional. The right trackpad or rear buttons can provide menu access or a convenience action, but need not duplicate the whole controller.
- Save the layout, launch the game, and check one action at a time. If a control is wrong, identify whether the game’s Controls page or Steam Input is responsible before changing the other layer.
Steam’s player documentation describes per-game controller configuration and legacy mode for games without native Steam Input action support. Legacy mode can translate physical inputs to XInput equivalents, keyboard keys, and mouse buttons. Do not assume this Recomp build has a native Steam Input action set unless the build itself exposes one. Steam also advises checking the corresponding configuration-support options for the controller type in use.

How do the two control approaches differ?
The game’s own controls and Steam Input solve related but different problems. Start with the game’s bindings for actions it already recognizes; use Steam Input as a targeted translation or convenience layer.
| Approach | Compatibility | Customization | Prompt behavior | Complexity | Version resilience |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recomp Settings → Controls | Uses the game’s own bindings; prefer it when the build recognizes the Deck or controller. | Assign the actions exposed by the current build. | Xbox-style prompts may appear when the game receives XInput-style input. | One mapping layer when used by itself. | Based on settings in the current Recomp build; action names can vary by build. |
| Steam Input legacy mapping | Can translate Deck inputs to XInput, keyboard, or mouse inputs when needed. | Maps physical inputs to the available legacy inputs. | XInput translation can result in Xbox-style prompts rather than Deck-label prompts. | Adds a second layer if the game is also remapping the same actions. | A community-created layout may become stale as the Recomp project changes. |
The Xbox-style icons are a prompt convention, not proof that the game has mistaken the Deck for a physical Xbox controller. The related PC manual says XInput mode displays Xbox 360 icons regardless of the device selected. Steam Input can also send XInput equivalents, so the icons may remain Xbox-style even when you play on the Deck.
Why are the prompts Xbox buttons instead of Steam Deck buttons?
That is expected when the game receives XInput-style events. The original game is Xbox-oriented, and its related PC manual says XInput mode displays Xbox 360 controller icons regardless of the device in use.
Use the game’s displayed prompts to understand the game’s logical button assignments, then match those assignments to the physical Deck controls in Settings → Controls or Steam Input. The available information does not establish that every Recomp build offers Deck-specific glyphs, so do not treat Xbox icons alone as a control failure.

Check for competing mapping layers before changing bindings. Resetting a Steam Input layout and then adjusting the in-game Controls page is often a clearer diagnostic sequence than adding more translations on top.
- Identify the active path. Check whether Steam Input is translating the Deck controls and whether the game also has custom assignments.
- Remove duplicate remapping. Reset the Steam Input layout if you are unsure what it changes, then test the game’s own controls by themselves.
- Reassign the game actions. Open the project menu with F1 or Back + Start, go to Settings → Controls, and assign the affected actions again.
- Test a single input at a time. Confirm the result before changing another button or restoring Steam Input. This helps distinguish a bad in-game binding from a Steam translation issue.
- Check for external remappers. Disable unnecessary remapping tools and test with one controller path. Steam warns that an external remapper can make it see an emulated Xbox 360 controller instead of the original device.
If the build offers a DirectInput-style path, the related PC manual says DirectInput allows customization while XInput mode does not. That is a manual’s description of the PC gamepad modes, not a guarantee that every Recomp build exposes the same option. Prefer the actual controls and mode labels available in your build.

What if you cannot open the settings menu?
Try either documented menu shortcut before changing the layout: press F1 or Back + Start. The project says both shortcuts are remappable.
If neither works with the current Deck layout, use Steam Input to assign the F1 keyboard key to a convenient button, then open the menu and change the game’s controls as needed. Keep that shortcut assignment only if it remains useful; there is no need to map every keyboard key to the controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow can you tell a port issue from a control issue?
A game that launches but behaves inconsistently may be affected by the work-in-progress port rather than by button assignments. The project warns of bugs, crashes, and visual issues, and separate Deck coverage describes early-beta limitations outside combat.
- Likely mapping issue: a specific button consistently triggers the wrong action, or the expected action does not register while other controls work.
- Possible port or build issue: the game crashes, shows visual problems, or behaves inconsistently beyond a particular button or menu action.
- Useful next step: keep save backups before changing builds, and avoid treating a renderer or general build problem as a reason to remap all controls.
No frame-rate claim is needed to configure controls, and performance can depend on the build and scene. A control guide cannot establish a universal performance result for every Deck setup.
Should you use an external controller?
No external controller is required by the documented setup. If you choose to connect one, an Xbox-compatible XInput controller is a logical optional choice because the game’s control model and documented prompts are Xbox-oriented; Steam Input can also translate controller inputs when needed. There is no model-specific compatibility guarantee here.
Steam’s player documentation notes that controller configuration support should correspond to the controller type in use. If an external controller is detected but behaves incorrectly, follow the same one-layer-at-a-time troubleshooting process rather than adding a second remapper immediately.

What controller-support settings should you check in Steam?
When Steam Input is involved, make sure the support option matching your physical device is enabled. Valve’s documentation specifically calls out the corresponding configuration-support boxes for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and generic controllers. The label can differ as Steam updates its interface, but the principle is the same: Steam must be allowed to interpret the device before a per-game layout can translate it.
After enabling the appropriate support, return to the game’s per-title controller configuration rather than changing global bindings. Global changes can affect other games and make this port harder to diagnose. If the controller appears twice, or one entry is an emulated Xbox 360 pad created by another utility, disconnect the extra path and test again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a microSD card or special Deck hardware required?
No special control hardware is documented as a requirement. The essential requirements are a compatible Recomp build and your own Xbox 360 game data. A Steam Deck-compatible microSD card can be useful if the ISO or extracted game folder needs more storage, but storage is an installation consideration, not a control fix. Do not buy a controller or card expecting it to solve a mapping conflict.
Keep the ISO or extracted folder in a stable location while testing. Moving the files, changing builds, and altering controller layers at the same time makes it difficult to identify which change caused a new problem. Change one variable, launch the game, and verify the same short sequence of actions each time.
What is the safest testing routine after remapping?
- Start at the title or pause menu and verify that the menu shortcut opens reliably.
- Check movement and camera separately. Confirm the left stick, then the right stick if your build exposes camera control.
- Test face buttons, shoulders, and triggers one by one using a low-risk area before entering a difficult encounter.
- Close and relaunch once to confirm the assignments persist instead of working only for the current session.
- Record the working layout. Note the build, whether Steam Input was enabled, and any custom shortcut. This makes it easier to restore the setup after an update.
This routine also clarifies whether a problem is persistent. A single missed input can be an in-game state or port quirk; a button that is wrong in every menu and scene points more strongly to a mapping conflict.

Will a control layout made for one Recomp build work on another?
That is not guaranteed. The project is in progress, and its available actions can depend on the build and source files; check the current Controls page rather than assuming a community layout still matches.
Can I use the same Steam Input layout with an external controller?
Steam’s controller configuration is per game, but the physical controls differ between devices. Review the assigned inputs after switching controllers, and make sure Steam has the appropriate controller configuration support enabled.
Do Xbox prompts mean the Deck controls are being misread?
Not by themselves. Xbox-style prompts are consistent with XInput behavior described in the related PC manual, which says those icons appear regardless of the device being used.
Should I configure Steam Input before the game’s Controls menu?
Usually no. Configure Settings → Controls first so the Recomp project has one clear mapping layer. Add Steam Input only for an unrecognized input, a keyboard or mouse translation, or a convenience shortcut.
Why does the controller work in menus but not in gameplay?
Check the action list in the current build and test each binding separately. If only particular actions fail, reassign them in Settings → Controls; if behavior changes after enabling Steam Input, remove duplicate bindings and test one layer at a time.
Can Steam Input make the game show Xbox buttons on the Deck?
Yes. Legacy Steam Input can send XInput equivalents, and the related PC manual says XInput mode uses Xbox 360 icons regardless of the physical device. The prompts do not prove that the Deck is malfunctioning.
What should I do before changing to another Recomp build?
Back up your saves, record the working control layout and whether Steam Input was enabled, then test the new build with the game’s own Controls page first. The project warns that builds can contain bugs, crashes, and visual issues.
The Bottom Line
Use the Recomp project’s Settings → Controls as the primary setup, begin with an Xbox-style layout, and add Steam Input only for missing inputs or useful shortcuts. Keep one mapping layer whenever possible, back up saves before changing builds, and remember that Xbox prompts and occasional instability are expected parts of this work-in-progress port rather than automatic signs of a bad Deck configuration.
