n8n can retry failed executions, but a retry does not guarantee that an external action happens exactly once. If an API creates a record or charges a customer and its response is lost, n8n may not know whether the action succeeded. Preventing duplicates requires a stable identity for the logical operation and deduplication at the receiving service or in durable state you control.
This distinction matters whether you are retrying an outbound API request or processing a webhook that may be delivered more than once. n8n’s retry, execution-history and queue features help run and recover workflows; none alone proves that an external side effect occurred only once.

For a workflow that changes something outside n8n, “exactly once” is about the effect, not how many times the workflow executes. The goal might be one payment, one ticket, or one record for a particular business event, even if n8n receives duplicate input or has to retry an execution.
It is useful to separate three events: n8n starts an execution, the remote service performs an action, and n8n records or receives the result. These events do not necessarily happen as one indivisible transaction. A network failure between the second and third events can leave n8n unable to tell whether the action happened.

That uncertainty is the reason a retry can create a duplicate. n8n’s idempotency guidance warns that automatic retries are safe only when the endpoint supports an idempotency key or another deduplication mechanism. The workflow engine cannot make a remote service’s action transactional merely by retrying it.
Why can a retry repeat an API action?
Consider a workflow that sends a POST request to create a charge or a record. The remote service may commit the change, then the response may time out or be lost before n8n can process it. From the workflow’s perspective, the result is unknown—not definitely successful and not definitely failed.
If n8n sends the same request again and the service treats it as a new request, the service may create a second effect. The correct response to uncertainty is not to assume success or failure: it is to retry using an identity the service can recognize, or to check the remote state before attempting the operation again.
n8n’s execution ID is not that cross-retry identity. Its documentation says that a manual retry or re-trigger receives a new execution.id. Use a stable business identifier—such as an order ID or provider event ID—as the basis for the logical operation’s key instead. If IDs might overlap between customers or operation types, include the relevant scope, such as tenant and operation, so separate actions cannot accidentally share a key.

How do I safely retry an API request in n8n?
Give every attempt for the same logical operation the same key, and confirm that the API receiving the request actually honors it. A header or field called an idempotency key is not enough by itself: the provider defines what the key does, how long it is retained, and what happens if requests with the same key have different payloads.
- Define the operation. Decide what counts as one business action—for example, creating the charge for a particular order. Choose an identity that stays the same when that action is retried, rather than one generated for each workflow run.
- Scope the key. Combine stable inputs as needed to avoid collisions across tenants, customers, or operation types. Do not use a fresh execution ID as the key for an operation that must remain identifiable across retries.
- Check the API’s rules. Verify in the provider’s own documentation how it treats repeated keys, key retention, and payload mismatches. Do not promise duplicate prevention beyond those documented semantics.
- Send the same key on retries. A retry of the same logical action must reuse its key. A genuinely new action needs a new key, even if it concerns the same customer.
- Set finite retry behavior. Choose a bounded number of attempts and suitable waits. Do not retry every error indiscriminately: a persistent or permanent failure will not be repaired by an unbounded loop, and it can consume executions without resolving the underlying problem.
- Plan what happens after the attempts run out. Make exhausted or ambiguous work visible for review or recovery rather than silently treating it as complete.
The precise setting names and key format depend on the API and the workflow node you use; the platform guidance does not establish one universal idempotency configuration for every endpoint. The essential check is whether the receiving service deduplicates requests under the semantics you need.

Treat inbound webhook delivery as repeatable. Extract a stable event or delivery ID from the provider, check it against durable state before starting downstream side effects, and keep enough status to tell a completed event from one still in progress.
- Identify the delivery. Use the provider’s stable event or delivery ID when available. Do not substitute an n8n execution ID: a redelivery can start another execution with a different ID.
- Check durable state first. Look up the ID in a Data Table or database before performing the work. If the event is already completed, avoid repeating the downstream action.
- Represent progress, not just existence. A record that says only “seen” cannot tell an operator whether the event finished or stopped partway through. Track enough state to distinguish completed work from work in progress or an uncertain outcome.
- Make the claim safe for concurrent deliveries. Two deliveries can arrive close together. If both check before either writes its record, a simple check-then-write can let both proceed. Design the durable claim so competing deliveries cannot both claim the same operation.
- Define recovery. Decide how to resume or reconcile an event that was claimed but did not reach a confirmed completion. Do not automatically treat every old in-progress record as safe to rerun; first account for the possibility that a downstream action succeeded before the workflow stopped.
n8n guidance describes checking delivery IDs in a Data Table or database. A community template demonstrates an example using Postgres for an atomic claim and handling completed, mismatched, and in-progress cases. That template is an implementation example, not an n8n platform guarantee or a production recipe validated for every workload.

Which deduplication design should I use?
The right design depends on whether the receiving API supports idempotency and whether you need to coordinate repeated or concurrent webhook deliveries. Compare the guarantees you can actually establish, rather than treating a retry feature or database choice as a guarantee by itself.
| Design | What it can do | What to verify or handle |
|---|---|---|
| Receiving API honors an idempotency key | Lets the service recognize retries of the same logical operation when its documented rules cover the requests. | Confirm key retention, repeated-request behavior, and payload-mismatch rules with the provider. Reuse the key only for that same operation. |
| Durable deduplication record | Lets the workflow check whether an inbound event or operation has already been claimed or completed. | Make claims safe under concurrent arrivals, persist useful outcome state, and provide a way to investigate or reconcile uncertain operations. |
| Execution history or retry alone | Helps operators inspect or rerun workflow executions. | Does not establish that a remote service did—or did not—perform the side effect before an error was observed. |
If the receiving API has no idempotency feature, a durable local record can prevent some repeats, but it cannot by itself make a remote action and a local database write one atomic transaction. Design for the case where the remote action succeeds but the workflow cannot record that success; reconciliation is the recovery path for that uncertainty.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes n8n queue mode prevent duplicate side effects?
No. Queue mode is an execution-distribution architecture, not evidence that an external action happened exactly once. n8n describes the main instance sending execution IDs through Redis to workers; workers obtain workflow information from the database, execute the workflow, and write results back. Queue mode requires Redis and database access.
That architecture addresses how work is assigned to workers and where execution information is persisted. The duplicate-effect problem is different: a worker can make a remote request whose result is not confirmed to the workflow. The API’s idempotency behavior or your durable deduplication and recovery design must address that boundary.

What does retrying a failed n8n execution actually do?
n8n lets an operator retry a failed execution using either the currently saved workflow or the original workflow, with prior execution data. That gives you a choice about which workflow version to run for recovery, but neither choice guarantees that an earlier external request had no effect.
Before retrying, determine what the failure tells you. If the request definitely failed before reaching the service, repeating it may be appropriate. If the remote service may have completed the action before the response was lost, first use the idempotency key, inspect the remote operation if possible, or follow your reconciliation procedure. Avoid interpreting “failed execution” as proof that every step’s external effects were rolled back.
For failures that need alerting or operator recovery, n8n’s error-handling guidance describes routing workflow failures to an error workflow that starts with an Error Trigger. Decide which failures should raise an alert and what information an operator needs to identify the logical operation and its status. Error handling makes recovery visible; it does not deduplicate the original request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I test the crash window?
A useful test checks the uncertainty boundary, not merely whether the workflow succeeds on a normal run. Use a test endpoint or environment where duplicate effects are safe, and record the key, request outcome, and durable status so you can tell what happened at each point.

- Failure before the side effect: Confirm that a retry can make the operation and that repeated attempts retain the same logical key.
- Remote commit, missing response: Simulate or arrange a lost response after the receiving service accepts the operation. Check whether the retry produces one effect under the API’s documented idempotency behavior.
- Failure while saving the deduplication result: Check the recovery path when the remote action may have succeeded but the local record does not show completion.
- Duplicate webhook delivery: Submit the same provider event ID again and verify that completed work is not repeated.
- Concurrent duplicate deliveries: Exercise two arrivals close enough to expose a check-then-write race in the deduplication store.
- Exhausted retries: Confirm that persistent errors become visible to an operator rather than looping indefinitely or disappearing as successful work.
These are test cases to run in your own environment, not claims about results from a benchmark. The outcome depends on your workflow, the receiving service’s semantics, and the implementation of your durable state.
What n8n webhook limits and setup details matter?
Two operational details affect webhook workflows but do not change the need for idempotency. First, n8n distinguishes test and production webhook URLs. For production use, save and publish the workflow before external services call its production URL.
Second, n8n Cloud documentation says a webhook request that takes longer than 100 seconds can fail with HTTP 524. This is a Cloud-specific timeout, not a universal limit for every n8n deployment. For long-running work on Cloud, the documented pattern is to return an immediate start response and provide a separate endpoint the caller can use to poll for status. Keeping acceptance separate from completion also gives your workflow a clearer place to record and expose progress, but it does not make a repeated start request safe unless that request is deduplicated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the n8n execution ID as an idempotency key?
Not when the key must survive a manual retry or re-trigger: n8n documents that those can receive a new execution ID. Use a stable identifier for the underlying business event instead.
Can queue mode guarantee that a payment or API request runs only once?
No. Queue mode distributes workflow executions among workers; it does not determine whether a remote service committed an action before a response was lost. The receiving API or a durable deduplication design must handle that uncertainty.
What if the webhook provider does not include an event ID?
Without a stable provider identifier, equivalent redeliveries are harder to distinguish reliably. If you can derive a unique operation identity from trusted business data, use and scope it carefully; otherwise, avoid claiming duplicate delivery can always be recognized and provide a review or reconciliation path.
