To troubleshoot MW4 DMZ, first check Activision and platform service status, then identify whether the failure is a game crash, a network disconnect, or an in-mode extraction bug. Run basic connection checks before changing router settings; use the separate crash-support path for PC freezes and crashes. A failed extraction does not by itself show that your router caused the problem, and there is no confirmed universal way to recover loot lost after a crash or disconnect.

What kind of MW4 DMZ failure are you seeing?

Start by matching the symptom, not by applying every suggested fix. A game closing to desktop, a lost-server message, and an extraction that completes without credit can have different causes and call for different next steps.

What happened Likely troubleshooting branch What to check first
The game closes to desktop or Windows reports a crash PC crash or game/driver issue Activision’s crashes and freezes support route and PC crash-report process
The game freezes or hard-locks Crash/freeze branch Check for an officially tracked issue; use the crash-support route if it continues
You return to a menu with a lost-host or server message Network or service disconnect Service status, platform network test, and whether other online games are affected
You disconnect during helicopter extraction Network interruption or a mode-specific issue Service status, exact timing, and the current known-issues list
The run appears to finish, but the extraction is not credited Possible in-mode or progression issue Known issues and an incident report; do not assume a router cause

Record the platform, game build, exact error text, UTC time, map and location, squad state, and whether other online games are affected. Note what your squad saw as well: did everyone disconnect, only one player disappear, or did the match continue without you? Also record whether the problem happened at deployment, while looting, during the extraction countdown, in the helicopter animation, or on the results screen. Timing can separate a broad service interruption from a repeatable mode or progression fault.

Take a screenshot or phone photo of an error message before dismissing it. If the game freezes and you must force-close it, write down the last action you took and whether audio, party chat, or other applications continued working. These details are more useful than a generic statement that “DMZ crashed.”

Is MW4 DMZ down, or is the problem on your connection?

Check Activision’s service-status page and your platform’s status before changing local settings. Activision says a status indicator that is not green, or an alert on the page, can be associated with connection problems; if service restoration is needed, wait before troubleshooting your router.

A green status is a useful first check, not proof that every service or your particular match is healthy. Status pages can lag behind a newly developing incident, and a regional or account-specific problem may not be obvious from a general indicator. If there is no alert, move on to your platform’s built-in network test and basic connection checks. If the test fails, or other online games are also disconnecting, troubleshoot the connection before treating the incident as an MW4 DMZ-only bug.

Activision’s known-issues page was updated October 27, 2026. It lists a DMZ issue involving progression through the Information Power Order and gives a workaround for a separate operator-prestige issue involving rare weapons with three attachment slots. Those entries are narrow and specific. They do not mean that every crash, lost-host message, or failed extraction shares that cause. Read the status label carefully: “under investigation,” “fixed,” and a listed workaround describe different stages of support.

The connection guide available from Activision Support was dated October 16, 2026. It is the appropriate reference for the order of console network tests, while the known-issues page is the better reference for current game-state problems. Check both rather than relying on an old forum checklist.

What should you try first for a disconnect?

Use low-risk checks before adjusting router configuration. These steps can help identify a connection problem, but they cannot establish that a server-side fault or game bug has been fixed.

  1. Check service status. Look for an alert or a non-green indicator on Activision’s service-status page and check the relevant platform status. Wait for an announced service problem to clear before making local changes.
  2. Run the platform’s network test. Use the connection-test option on your console or PC platform. Note whether it reports a problem, and write down any NAT or connectivity warning it displays. Do not treat a successful test as a guarantee that a particular MW4 match will remain connected; a brief interruption can still occur later.
  3. Restart the router. Power-cycle the router and let it reconnect fully before launching another match. A restart can clear a temporary state, but it is not a repair for an outage or defective game build. If other people depend on the connection, choose a time when interrupting it will not disrupt their work or calls.
  4. Pause competing network activity. Stop downloads, streaming, cloud sync, remote backups, and other bandwidth-heavy activity while you check whether MW4 remains stable. Ask other users on the network before stopping a shared service.
  5. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if practical. Activision recommends wired Ethernet for online gameplay. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an optional, inexpensive diagnostic accessory. Connect directly to the router, keep the rest of the setup the same, and repeat a comparable DMZ session. If the disconnect stops on a wired connection, Wi-Fi instability becomes a plausible contributor; that result does not prove that all crashes or extraction bugs are network-related.

Activision Support’s connection guide states, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay,” and says that “a wired connection will allow your system to achieve optimal performance for online gameplay.” Those statements support using Ethernet as a controlled comparison, not promising that a cable repairs server faults, driver crashes, or a lost inventory record. If Ethernet makes no difference while other games remain stable, stop repeating cable and router resets and investigate the game-specific branch.

What router settings should console players change?

If the basic checks do not resolve a console connection problem, Activision’s recommended approach is staged: test UPnP first, then try port forwarding with a static IP, and use a console DMZ placement only as a later diagnostic step. Change one setup at a time, keep notes of the original values, and test more than one match if the problem is intermittent.

  1. Try UPnP first. Turn off port forwarding and enable UPnP in the router settings, then test MW4. UPnP lets compatible devices request the connections they need without manually entering a port list. Router menus vary by make and model, so consult the router’s own documentation for the controls. Do not enable several competing schemes at once, because you will not know which setting produced the result.
  2. Try port forwarding only if needed. If the issue remains, turn off UPnP, enable port forwarding, assign the console a static IP, and test again. Follow the port-forwarding instructions for your router and platform; do not guess at ports or apply settings intended for another device. A static address matters because a forwarding rule aimed at yesterday’s address may point to the wrong console after a lease changes.
  3. Use DMZ only as a temporary diagnostic. If the preceding tests do not resolve the issue, turn off port forwarding and place the console’s static IP in the router’s DMZ, then test the game. This exposes the console more broadly to unsolicited traffic, so it is a test of whether filtering is involved, not a preferred everyday configuration.
  4. Remove the console from DMZ after the test. Activision specifically advises removing the static IP address from the router’s DMZ once testing is complete. Restore the safer prior arrangement and confirm that any temporary forwarding or UPnP change is documented.

This sequence is for consoles. It is not a reason to change router settings when the symptom is a PC game crash, and a DMZ test cannot prove that a server-side fault or in-mode bug has been repaired. If you do not know how your router applies a setting, pause and consult its documentation rather than applying a broad network change. Never place an entire household network in a DMZ just to test one console.

Compare the result by symptom, not by hope. If UPnP, forwarding, and temporary DMZ all produce the same helicopter disconnect, the evidence points away from a simple inbound-filtering problem. If only one configuration changes the result and other online games show the same behavior, continue checking the home network and contact your internet provider when appropriate. If only MW4 fails, preserve the test notes for an Activision report instead of continually changing settings.

What should PC players do when MW4 crashes or freezes?

A crash to desktop or a hard freeze is a different problem from a connection loss. If MW4 closes, locks up, or shows a graphics- or driver-style error, use Activision’s dedicated crashes and freezes support route; submit its PC crash report when appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First compare the exact symptom and error text with the current known-issues information. If the issue is not listed, use the official crash-support path and include the incident details you recorded. A router restart or Ethernet connection may help investigate a separate network disconnect, but neither is evidence of a repair for a confirmed game-code or driver fault. A crash that occurs while the rest of the household internet remains usable should stay on the crash branch even if it happened during extraction.

When you submit a report, include the build, operating-system context, approximate UTC time, map or activity, and whether the failure is repeatable. Explain whether the game closes immediately, freezes until force-closed, or returns an error and stays open. If the same crash appears in menus or another mode, say so; if it occurs only during DMZ extraction, say that instead. Do not substitute a vague “connection issue” label for a reproducible crash description.

A crash report gives Activision information about a PC failure; it does not promise an immediate fix or restore progress from a failed run. Avoid treating generic registry utilities or unrelated network adjustments as confirmed solutions for a repeat crash unless an official support instruction specifically calls for them. Installing a third-party cleaner or changing system settings can introduce a new variable and make the original fault harder to diagnose.

Can you recover loot after a failed extraction?

There is no established universal recovery process for DMZ loot lost after a crash or disconnect. DMZ is an extraction mode in which players deploy for rewards and return to the Forward Operating Base after extraction, so a failed run can have a real inventory or progression consequence; do not assume that reconnecting, reinstalling, or changing NAT settings will restore it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate three outcomes that players often describe as “lost loot”: the game may disconnect before the extraction is complete, the run may finish but fail to credit extraction, or a later progression screen may fail to display an item that was credited. They may require different investigation. Check the stash, progression, and operator screens once, then avoid repeatedly launching and abandoning sessions while an incident is still being documented.

Check the current known-issues page to see whether your particular failure is officially listed. Record what happened, including the time, platform, build, location, squad state, error message, and whether the game crashed or disconnected, then report the incident through the official channel. Include what the squad observed and whether the result changed after signing in again. Keep the report factual: an officially tracked issue, a player report, and a workaround without official confirmation are not equivalent evidence.

Do not tell support that a router change “recovered” loot unless you can show that the item was actually restored and the change was repeatable. At present, no authoritative recovery rate or success percentage establishes that reconnecting, reinstalling, Ethernet, port forwarding, or DMZ placement returns inventory after a failed extraction.

How should you judge online fixes and workarounds?

Use the evidence label, platform scope, reversibility, and symptom match to decide whether a suggestion is worth trying. A workaround reported by a player is not automatically an official fix, and an official fix for one narrow issue does not establish a cause or remedy for another.

Suggestion Evidence and scope Risk or limit
Service-status check Official Activision and platform guidance; all platforms Low risk, but a green indicator cannot certify your individual match
Platform network test and router restart Official connection troubleshooting; all platforms Low risk; may expose a local fault but cannot repair game code
Cat 6 Ethernet comparison Supported by Activision’s wired-connection recommendation; practical diagnostic Low risk; identifies a likely Wi-Fi contribution, not every cause
UPnP, then forwarding with static IP Official console sequence Requires careful, device-specific configuration
Temporary console DMZ Official later diagnostic step Higher exposure; reverse it immediately after testing
Player-posted tweak Unverified report unless Activision confirms it May be ineffective, unsafe, or aimed at a different symptom
  • Official support instruction: A step published by Activision for a stated connection or crash problem. Follow its platform scope and order; the console router sequence, for example, should not be treated as PC crash advice.
  • Officially listed issue: A problem named on Activision’s known-issues page, sometimes marked as under investigation or accompanied by a workaround. Check the page’s current wording rather than assuming an older status still applies.
  • Player-reported symptom: An account of what happened to an individual player. It can help you recognize a similar symptom, but it does not establish prevalence or cause.
  • Untested workaround: A suggested change without confirmation that it resolves the problem. Treat it as uncertain, especially if it involves router security or broad system changes.

When should you stop changing settings and report the problem?

Stop escalating local changes when the symptom points to a crash or a specifically tracked bug, or when the low-risk network checks do not change a disconnect. Further router changes may add complexity without addressing the actual cause.

  • Use Activision’s service-status information if an alert or non-green indicator appears.
  • Use the PC crashes and freezes support route for a repeat desktop crash or hard lock.
  • Use the known-issues page to check the exact DMZ or progression symptom rather than matching only the word “crash.”
  • Report a failed extraction with the platform, game build, UTC time, exact error, location, and squad state, and state whether the game crashed, disconnected, or failed to credit the extraction.
  • Keep a short timeline of each test: status result, network-test result, router state, connection type, and outcome. This prevents support from receiving contradictory settings and helps you return the router to its original configuration.

Keep any router test reversible. In particular, remove the console from the router DMZ after the diagnostic test, as Activision Support directs. If a setting does not produce a clear, repeatable change after a reasonable comparison, restore the safer configuration and report the symptom instead of stacking more changes.

Quick decision guide

Service alert or non-green status? Wait for restoration and do not rewrite your router. Other games also disconnect? Run the platform test, restart the router, pause competing traffic, and compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Only MW4 closes or freezes? Use the PC or console crash-support route and check known issues. Only extraction credit or DMZ progression is wrong? Document the exact sequence and report it as an in-mode or progression issue. Considering DMZ on a router? Use it only for the staged console diagnostic and remove it afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a green Activision status page mean my MW4 connection is fine?

No. It means the status page is not showing the alert described in Activision’s guidance; it does not certify your home network or guarantee a stable individual match. Use the platform’s network test and note whether other online games are affected.

Should I reinstall MW4 to get back DMZ loot?

There is no established universal recovery method for loot lost after a crash or disconnect, and reinstalling is not a confirmed way to restore it. Check the known-issues page and report the incident with its details instead of assuming a reinstall will recover inventory.

What details should I include in an MW4 DMZ bug report?

Include your platform, game build, exact error text, UTC time, map and location, squad state, and whether other online games were affected. State plainly whether the game closed, froze, disconnected, or completed the run without crediting extraction. Add what your squad saw and which connection tests you tried.

Is a player-posted MW4 fix confirmed if several people mention it?

Not necessarily. Player accounts can identify a pattern worth checking, but they do not establish that a workaround is official or that it caused the reported outcome. Compare the symptom with Activision’s current known-issues and support information, and label any test as unverified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a Cat 6 cable as a permanent fix?

Use wired Ethernet first as a controlled diagnostic because Activision strongly recommends it for online gameplay. If the problem disappears on Ethernet, Wi-Fi instability is plausible. A cable does not prove or repair a server-side bug, PC crash, or failed extraction record.

Is router DMZ safe to leave enabled for my console?

No permanent DMZ recommendation is established here. Activision presents console DMZ placement as a later diagnostic step after UPnP and port-forwarding tests, and specifically says to remove the static IP from the router’s DMZ after testing.

Should I enable UPnP and port forwarding together?

No. Activision’s sequence tests UPnP first, then turns UPnP off before testing port forwarding with a static console IP. Changing one arrangement at a time makes the result interpretable and avoids conflicting rules.

Why did my extraction fail when my internet test passed?

A successful platform test is only a snapshot; it does not guarantee that a particular match or extraction remains connected. The failure may be a brief network interruption, service event, crash, or mode-specific issue. Record the timing and check the current known-issues page rather than assuming the test proves a router fault.

The Bottom Line

Check service status first, classify the symptom, and use low-risk network tests before touching router settings. For consoles, follow Activision’s order—UPnP, then port forwarding with a static IP, and only a temporary DMZ test—removing the console from DMZ afterward. Treat PC crashes through the crash-support route, and report failed extractions with precise details. No universal loot-recovery method or guaranteed crash fix has been established.
