Yes, you can repair the player tank while enemies are nearby in MW4 DMZ. No published guide or Activision briefing documents a combat-proximity lock that removes the repair interaction. The danger is practical rather than mechanical: the Air Base Tank Depot is heavily guarded, the tank is immobile and loud while you work, and incoming fire can kill you before the job is complete.
“Repair” covers two different jobs. First, you rebuild the wrecked tank in Chang-san Air Base’s Tank Depot with four loose parts. Later, once it is running, you restore armor and fuel by parking at a Gas Station. The first job is mission-gated; the second is routine vehicle servicing. They use different locations and rules, so the safest plan is to clear the room before the rebuild and use a guarded Gas Station for later damage.

What does “repair” mean for the MW4 DMZ tank?
MW4 DMZ has a one-time rebuild for the Air Base tank and an ongoing service system for the tank after it becomes drivable. Confusing those jobs is the main reason players report a missing prompt or bring the wrong items.
| Job | Where it happens | What you need | What you get | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rebuild the wreck | Tank Depot/Tank Workshop at the rear of the Armory inside Chang-san Air Base | Tank Battery, Tank Plugs (also recorded as Spark Plug), Tank Water Pump and Tank Alternator | A drivable player tank for the current match | AI guards, Lieutenant Bale, locked-armory access and third-party squads |
| Repair and refuel after driving | Any Gas Station canopy, with the tank positioned by the pumps | No carried parts; the station services the vehicle automatically | Restored vehicle armor and fuel | The tank must remain stationary, making it vulnerable to launchers and ambushes |
The roaming Tank Commander, also called the NK Battle Tank, is a separate boss. It is not the wreck in the Tank Depot and cannot be rebuilt with the four tank parts.

How do you rebuild the wrecked tank in Chang-san Air Base?
You need the correct mission path, Armory access and all four components in your current inventory. Stash-only parts do not count until you bring them into the deployment in which you intend to install them.
Unlock the Air Base route first
Select Operation Iron Citadel, a tier 2 Story Mission. DMZTracker reports that it remains locked until you complete the three tier 1 missions Critical Extraction, Silent Ledger and Shopping Hacks. The mission provides the route into the Air Base complex where the tank is located.
Chang-san Air Base is on the west side of Hajin and is described by Call of Duty Staff as an “incredibly dangerous, well-fortified complex” containing many guards and high-value targets. Treat the approach as a combat objective, not as a quiet vehicle pickup.
Open the Armory
The Armory requires an upgraded Air Base Access Card or Multi-Use Air Base Hangar Key Card. You also need a six-digit code assembled from three Transfer Slip – Do Not File notes. DMZTracker, citing Game Rant, says the code changes every match, so a code from a previous deployment is not reliable.
After entering the vault, a Colossus is reported behind the door. On the ground floor, turn right toward the Tank Depot. The wreck is in the back of the depot; approach its rear until the Repair Engine interaction appears.
Find the four tank parts
Community guides from Gamer.org, DETONATED, Gfinity, Gaming ProMax, Fanboydestroy and DMZTracker agree that four orange-quality parts are required. They spawn as loose world loot rather than guaranteed container contents, and their exact positions randomize.

| Part | Reported search areas |
|---|---|
| Tank Battery | Bunker tunnels and the underground Hangar beneath the Air Base Hangar, including corners, shelves and storage rooms |
| Tank Plugs (item records may call them Spark Plug) | West-side mechanic shacks, cabinets and workbenches; also beneath parked jets in the underground Hangar |
| Tank Water Pump | Fuel tanks near the northern Hangar entrance, rooftops, cabinets and building corners |
| Tank Alternator | Inside the locked Air Base Armory is the most consistently reported location; northern bunkers are mentioned but less firmly established |
You do not have to collect all four in one deployment. Extract with components, place them in your Stash, then bring the complete set into the repair run. If you want to protect a hard-earned set from a failed exfiltration, DMZTracker advises placing the parts in a Secure Slot when extracting.
Install the parts
- Enter the Tank Depot and eliminate or evade the guards before standing at the tank’s rear.
- Verify that all four parts are in the active backpack, not merely stored in the Stash.
- Face the rear of the Air Base tank and select Repair Engine.
- Install the Tank Battery, Tank Plugs, Tank Water Pump and Tank Alternator when prompted.
- Wait for the Vehicle Repaired confirmation before moving away.
- Open the Hangar doors and drive out; the tank’s noise can draw AI and rival squads.
The Chinese-language guide from Youxia/Ali213, dated 26 October 2026, describes the same four-part concept with slightly different translations, including “tank spark plugs” and “tank engine” for the alternator. Its route places the tank in the underground armory depot after Iron Citadel reaches the aircraft-explosives stage.
Does tank repair get cancelled if someone shoots you?
No cancellation rule tied specifically to enemy proximity has been published. Current guides attribute a missing interaction to the wrong tank, missing parts or incomplete Armory access—not to an AI soldier or operator standing in the room.
That does not make repairing under fire sensible. DMZTracker reports that Lieutenant Bale and an elite guard can spawn in the Tank Depot. Reetam Bodhak of TechnoSports advises clearing nearby hostiles and checking sightlines before kneeling beside the immobile tank. His practical warning is blunt: “If bullets start flying, get behind cover, deal with the threat, then return.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There is a genuine nearby-enemy restriction elsewhere in DMZ: the Possum Warfighter trait cannot activate while the team that killed you is nearby, or until four minutes have passed. That mechanic demonstrates that DMZ can enforce proximity conditions, but no source applies such a condition to the tank’s Repair Engine interaction.
What if the prompt is missing?
Check these causes in order:
- Wrong vehicle: the roaming Tank Commander/NK Battle Tank is a boss and does not accept the four parts.
- Wrong location: the interaction is at the rear of the wreck in the Tank Depot, not at a generic truck or another vehicle.
- Incomplete access: Iron Citadel, the upgraded access card and the changing six-digit Armory code are part of the route.
- Parts not in this deployment: components left in the Stash are unavailable until you bring them into the current inventory.
- Not all four components: the rebuild requires the complete set, including the Tank Alternator and Tank Water Pump.
Do not assume an enemy proximity lock unless a future patch explicitly adds one. No measured radius, repair-channel lock flag or fixed repair duration has been published.

Can you fix the tank under fire in the Tank Depot?
The interaction is not documented as disabled by nearby enemies, but the Tank Depot rebuild should be treated as a clear-then-repair operation. The tank cannot drive away while you are still gathering parts or standing at the rear, and the Air Base concentrates guards and high-value targets around the objective.
Solo approach
A solo operator should scout from cover, identify Lieutenant Bale or the elite guard, and clear the room before interacting. Keep an exit route toward the Hangar doors and avoid beginning the install while an alarmed AI group is moving into the depot. If a squad arrives, abandon the exposed position rather than trading health for a partially completed vehicle.
Two- or three-player approach
A squad can divide the job: one player interacts or searches for the remaining component while another watches the entrance and a third covers the approach or carries spare armor. The tank is reported to have two player seats, so a second operator can guard during later Gas Station stops as well.
If gunfire starts during an interaction
One 29 October 2026 TechnoSports article describes a repair tool, progress indicator and the option to break off mid-repair. Every detailed four-part guide instead describes a rear-of-tank interaction followed by component installation, without establishing a universal progress channel. Treat the progress-bar claim as unconfirmed for the Air Base rebuild. If your in-game prompt visibly shows progress, cancel it, move behind cover, defeat the threat and return; do not remain exposed to preserve a channel.
How do you repair and refuel the running tank at a Gas Station?
After the four-part rebuild, later damage and fuel loss use the normal DMZ vehicle system. Park the tank under a Gas Station canopy near the pumps and allow the station to service it automatically.
- Open the tac map and mark a Gas Station with a safe approach and more than one escape route.
- Drive under the canopy and position the tank close to the pumps.
- Stop moving so the automatic repair and refuel service can operate.
- Keep a teammate outside or use nearby cover to watch for operators carrying launchers.
- Leave as soon as the tank has enough armor and fuel for the next objective.
Call of Duty Staff’s official DMZ Deep Dive explains the general rule: vehicles have finite armor and fuel and are repaired and refueled at Gas Stations. The same briefing says Gas Stations can refill operator-carried Gas Cans, but Gfinity (28 October 2026) and DETONATED (26 October 2026) report that those carried canisters do not repair or refuel the Air Base tank. A Gas Can is therefore not a substitute for driving the tank to a station.

A stationary tank under a canopy is an obvious target. Gaming ProMax specifically warns about RPG-8 and JOKR attacks. Plan the stop away from predictable launcher lanes, and do not confuse this vehicle service with the separate on-foot tyre-repair Traits mentioned in the official briefing.
Which tank can you repair with the four parts?
Use the vehicle’s identity to decide whether the Repair Engine prompt should exist.
| Vehicle | Role | Four-part tank rebuild? | What to use instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Base Tank Depot wreck | Mission-gated player vehicle | Yes | Tank Battery, Tank Plugs, Tank Water Pump and Tank Alternator |
| Tank Commander/NK Battle Tank | Roaming Hajin boss | No | RPG, Thermite, C4 or Drill Charge; ordinary bullets do not meaningfully damage it |
| Deathstalker | Attack-helicopter Commander | Not applicable | It is an aircraft, not a tank; the player tank is reported as a strong counter to it |
| Radar or “repair a truck” Side Op vehicle | Separate field truck objective | No verified substitution | Its own Car Battery, Alternator, Spark Plug and Vehicle Water Pump requirements |
DMZ Codex cautions that Tank Alternator and Tank Water Pump have not been verified as replacements for the generic truck parts. Do not spend a tank component expecting it to satisfy the radar-truck Side Op.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do after the tank starts?
Think of the rebuilt vehicle as a loud, temporary match asset rather than a permanent unlock. Gamer.org and TechnoSports treat the running tank as usable only in the current match, while DMZTracker still listed post-exfiltration persistence as unconfirmed on 27 October 2026.
- Leave the depot quickly: open the Hangar doors and avoid idling in the objective room.
- Use mobility as protection: keep moving between objectives instead of presenting a stationary target.
- Schedule service: mark a Gas Station before armor or fuel becomes critical.
- Expect attention: the cannon can one-shot most ordinary vehicles, but the noise and size attract rival squads.
- Do not challenge another tank casually: Fanboydestroy and DMZTracker, citing Game Rant, describe the cannon as poor against other tanks.
The official vehicle briefing lists cars, trucks, aircraft and watercraft, but not this mission-gated tank. That distinction matters: the Air Base tank was documented by post-launch guides, not as a normal spawn-anywhere vehicle in the pre-launch roster.
What remains unconfirmed about tank repair?
Several details are still not established by a publisher specification or measured test. There is no published enemy-proximity radius, repair duration in seconds, fuel-burn rate or launcher time-to-kill against the player tank. Reports about northern-bunker Alternator spawns are also weaker than the Armory location.

Because the game is live, part locations, Armory codes and vehicle behavior can change with patches; verify the current prompt and item names in your build.
What is the safest practical sequence?
- Finish the tier 1 missions required for Operation Iron Citadel and prepare the upgraded Air Base access item.
- Collect the four tank parts over one or more deployments, extracting them when necessary.
- Bring the complete set into the repair deployment and confirm it is in the active inventory.
- Enter the Armory, assemble the changing code from the three transfer slips and reach the Tank Depot.
- Clear Lieutenant Bale, the elite guard and nearby AI before using the rear-of-tank prompt.
- Install every part and wait for “Vehicle Repaired.”
- Open the Hangar doors, drive out and keep moving while watching for third parties.
- For combat damage or low fuel, choose a Gas Station with cover, park under the canopy and assign a guard before automatic service begins.
This sequence answers the title question in operational terms: nearby enemies do not appear to switch off the repair interaction, but clearing them first is the difference between a legal repair and a needless death beside an immobile tank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to clear the Air Base before repairing the tank?
You do not need proof that every enemy on the entire Air Base is dead, but the Tank Depot itself should be secure. Lieutenant Bale and an elite guard can spawn in that room, and an alarmed group can reach you while you are exposed at the tank’s rear.
Can I carry tank parts out and use them in a later deployment?
Yes. Guides describe the components as loose world loot that can be extracted and stashed for a later repair run. They only become usable after you bring them back into the active inventory, and a Secure Slot can protect them during extraction.
Why does my tank take damage even after I repair it?
The rebuilt vehicle has finite armor and fuel like other DMZ vehicles. The four-part interaction makes it drivable; later combat damage requires a stationary Gas Station service stop, not another set of tank components.
Can the repaired tank kill the roaming NK Battle Tank?
The player tank’s cannon is reported to destroy ordinary vehicles in one shot but perform poorly against other tanks. The roaming commander is normally engaged with heavy weapons such as RPGs, Thermite, C4 or Drill Charges rather than the four-part rebuild system.
