Neither music nor silence makes food taste better for everyone. Studies suggest sound can influence some people’s ratings of flavor intensity, pleasantness, and food enjoyment, but the results vary with the food, the sound, and whether the listener likes it. Silence can also be a positive eating condition. The evidence supports choosing what you enjoy—not a universal rule that music improves a meal.

What does “taste better” mean?

“Taste better” can refer to several different experiences, and studies do not measure them interchangeably. A sound condition might affect how intense a flavor seems without changing how much someone likes the food, or it might affect pleasantness without changing flavor intensity.

  • Sensory intensity: how strong a flavor, such as sweetness, seems.
  • Pleasantness and liking: how enjoyable the food or eating experience feels.
  • Discrimination: whether someone can notice a difference between foods or food samples.
  • Eating behavior: how long a meal lasts or how much food someone consumes.

A result in one category is not proof of a result in another. For instance, spending longer at a meal does not necessarily mean eating more, and a higher pleasantness rating does not by itself establish that a flavor became more intense.

There is also a difference between a food tasting different and the whole occasion feeling better. Music can alter mood, stimulation, or the sense that an atmosphere is appropriate. Those changes may raise a person’s enjoyment rating even when the perceived sweetness, saltiness, or texture is unchanged. When reading a claim about “better taste,” first ask which of these outcomes was actually measured.

What have studies found about music and eating?

The findings are mixed because the studies test different sounds, foods, settings, and outcomes. Some report changes in food ratings under particular conditions; others find no change in intake, and several suggest that a person’s response depends on the food or on their reaction to the sound.

Study and setting Sound conditions Food and outcome What the result can tell you
Mathiesen and colleagues, 2022; quasi-naturalistic cafeteria study with 248 people Slow music, fast music, cafeteria noise, or silence Lunch; meal duration, intake, meal pleasantness, and food liking People exposed to background sound spent more time eating than people in silence. Slow music prolonged meals compared with fast music, but did not increase intake. Liking and perceived appropriateness of the sonic atmosphere correlated with meal pleasantness and food liking.
Laboratory tasting experiment; pitch, tempo, and volume varied Music differing in pitch, tempo, or volume, with comparisons including silence Chocolate and bell peppers; hedonic impressions and perceived flavor intensity Some lower-pitched or louder conditions increased hedonic impressions relative to comparison conditions. Flavor was rated more intense when participants felt more stimulated by the music. The authors described the effects as food-dependent and not pronounced.
Genre experiment Classical, jazz, hip-hop, and rock arrangements; single or multiple performers Foods; liking Participants liked foods more with the jazz stimulus than with hip-hop, but genre effects depended on the food and performer arrangement. This does not establish a generally superior genre.
“Lunch melodies,” 2024; crossover study with 50 participants Silence, liked music, and disliked music Viewed food images; emotions and ratings of food pleasantness, overall liking, and satisfaction Liked music and silence elicited more positive emotions and higher food ratings than disliked music. Because participants viewed food images rather than eating, this is evidence about affect while viewing food, not direct proof of a taste change during a meal.
Kaiser and colleagues, 2016; laboratory study with 147 healthy adults aged 18–30 Silence, music over speakers or headphones, and pop songs with English or German vocals Amount consumed The abstract reports no association between the music conditions and how much participants consumed. That result concerns intake in this laboratory study, not every aspect of taste or enjoyment.
Ferber and Cabanac, 1987; taste-solution study with 10 adult men Low noise, loud noise, loud music, or silence Sucrose and salt solutions; pleasure ratings and preferred concentrations Median pleasure ratings for sucrose were higher under loud noise and loud music than under silence; there was no equivalent change for salt. Preferred sweet and salty concentrations did not vary by sound condition. The small, narrow sample and artificial solutions limit what can be inferred about meals.
“Effects of background sound on consumers’ sensory discriminatory ability among foods”; a survey of 244 and a separate test with 58 participants Survey preferences included conversation and silence; the experiment tested background sound conditions Eating preferences and ability to discriminate food differences In the survey, 58.8% preferred eating with conversation and 3.7% preferred silence. In the separate experiment, sound effects on discrimination varied with the food and sound condition. Those percentages describe the survey respondents, not the general population.
Shestakova, 2025; study with 53 volunteers Music and smell, considered with carrot texture Carrots; taste and pleasantness ratings The abstract says congruent music or smell could modulate ratings, while combining music and smell did not show a comparable effect. The authors called for more experiments before drawing firm conclusions about combined modalities.

Why do studies disagree?

The apparent conflict is easier to understand when each comparison is described precisely. A study of liked versus disliked songs asks a different question from one comparing silence with cafeteria noise. A taste test of chocolate or pepper measures a different outcome from a cafeteria observation of meal length. Even within music, pitch, tempo, loudness, lyrics, genre, performer number, and personal familiarity can change the experience.

Food itself is another source of variation. Chocolate, bell peppers, sucrose solution, salt solution, carrots, and a mixed cafeteria lunch differ in sweetness, bitterness, aroma, texture, and cultural associations. A sound that fits a sweet food may not fit a bitter or crunchy one. The 2025 carrot study specifically tested whether music and smell were congruent with the food and found that the combination of two cues did not simply add their effects.

Listener response matters too. In the cafeteria work, liking and perceived appropriateness of the sonic atmosphere tracked meal pleasantness and food liking. A disliked song can be distracting or irritating; silence can be relaxing for one diner and uncomfortable for another. These personal reactions are not noise around the result—they are part of the condition being experienced.

Does music change flavor intensity or just enjoyment?

It may affect either, but the available findings do not show that the two always move together. In the experiment using chocolate and bell peppers, some ratings of flavor intensity were higher when participants felt more stimulated by the music, while other results concerned hedonic impressions. The researchers cautioned that effects differed by food and were not pronounced.

The older taste-solution study also illustrates why those measures matter. Loud sound was associated with higher median pleasure ratings for sucrose, but the preferred concentration of sweet solutions did not change. A person can report greater pleasure without choosing a different sweetness level; that is not the same as proving that the sound changed the food itself.

Likewise, the food-image study measured emotional responses and judgments about pictured food. Its results may help explain how sound and food presentation interact in a viewing task, but they cannot establish what participants would taste if they ate the pictured meal.

Discrimination is yet another question. The survey-and-test study found that background sound effects on telling foods apart varied with the food and sound condition. Better or worse discrimination does not automatically mean a sample was more pleasant, sweeter, or more filling.

Does silence make a meal better?

Silence is a reasonable choice if you enjoy it; the evidence does not identify it as universally better or worse than music. In the 2024 food-image crossover study, silence was among the conditions associated with more positive emotions and higher food ratings than disliked music. That is a specific result from viewing food, not a general verdict about silent meals.

Silence also served as a comparison condition in several tasting and eating studies, but those studies asked different questions. The cafeteria study found that people in background sound spent longer eating than people in silence, whereas the laboratory study of 147 adults reported no association between its sound conditions and amount consumed. Neither result means silence necessarily improves taste or that music necessarily changes appetite.

Conversation is another distinct sound condition, not simply a form of music or silence. In one survey, 58.8% of respondents preferred eating with conversation and 3.7% preferred silence. These are the preferences of that survey’s participants; they should not be read as population-wide estimates or as evidence that conversation makes food taste better.

What kind of music makes food taste better?

No genre, tempo, pitch, volume, or performer setup has been established as a reliable way to improve food for everyone. A genre experiment found greater liking with jazz than hip-hop in its conditions, but the effects varied with the food and whether arrangements used a single or multiple performers.

Other experiments point to the same need for qualification. Lower-pitched or louder music affected some hedonic impressions in a study using chocolate and bell peppers, and perceived flavor intensity was higher when participants felt more stimulated. The authors said the effects were food-dependent and not pronounced. Those findings do not justify a blanket recommendation to play loud, low-pitched music at meals.

Whether a sound feels enjoyable or appropriate may matter at least as much as its category. In the cafeteria study, liking and perceived appropriateness of the sonic atmosphere correlated with meal pleasantness and food liking. The 2024 image study also found more positive food evaluations with liked music and silence than with disliked music. These results support personal preference as a useful guide, not a proven mechanism that guarantees a better-tasting meal.

Can music change how long you eat or how much you consume?

One cafeteria study found that background sound was associated with longer meals, but slow music did not increase intake compared with the other conditions. A separate laboratory study reported no association between music condition and amount consumed. Meal duration, food liking, and intake are separate outcomes, so a longer meal should not be treated as evidence that someone ate more.

The studies do not establish that a playlist can reliably increase or reduce how much a person eats. The cafeteria finding comes from one quasi-naturalistic lunch setting and four sonic conditions; the laboratory finding concerns 147 healthy adults aged 18–30 and five music or silence conditions. These are useful observations, but they do not support a general claim about appetite or portion size.

Nor do they establish a weight-management strategy. The studies were not product tests or clinical trials, and the reported outcomes do not show that changing sound produces a predictable calorie difference. If your goal is to regulate intake, use established nutrition and medical guidance rather than relying on a playlist.

How can you decide what works for your own meals?

If you are curious, compare your own experience without treating the result as a scientific test. Keep the food and setting as similar as practical, and notice separately whether the sound changes flavor intensity, enjoyment, or how long you linger.

  1. Choose a familiar food. A food you eat regularly makes it easier to notice whether the experience feels different, though this will still be a personal impression.
  2. Try the conditions you actually want to compare. For example, have one meal in silence and another with music you like. If you want to compare two playlists, avoid changing several aspects of the meal at once.
  3. Keep practical details steady. Use similar portions, temperature, lighting, time of day, and eating pace. Avoid comparing a rushed weekday lunch with a relaxed weekend dinner and attributing every difference to sound.
  4. Pay attention to one outcome at a time. Ask whether the food seems more intense, whether you like it more, and whether the meal feels more pleasant. Do not use one answer as a substitute for the others.
  5. Include a disliked-music test only if useful. It can show whether your reaction is about music generally or about a particular playlist, but do not force yourself to eat with sound that causes distress.
  6. Repeat before drawing a conclusion. A single meal can be affected by the food, your mood, or the setting. A repeated preference can help you choose what you enjoy, but it does not prove that the same effect applies to other people or foods.

This is a way to make a personal choice, not a validated protocol. The studies used varied foods and controlled sound conditions; they do not establish one ideal playlist or a specific listening setup for home meals.

How strong is the evidence?

The overall evidence is suggestive rather than decisive. It includes a cafeteria study, laboratory taste and eating experiments, a survey, a food-viewing task, and a small study of taste solutions. Their variety helps identify possible effects, but differences in design make it difficult to combine them into one answer to whether music improves taste.

  • The outcome varies: studies measured intensity, pleasantness, liking, discrimination, meal duration, intake, or emotional response—not one common definition of “better.”
  • The foods vary: examples include chocolate, bell peppers, taste solutions, carrots, pictured lunch items, and cafeteria meals. A response to one food does not establish a response to all foods.
  • The sound conditions vary: studies tested silence, noise, conversation preferences, genres, tempo, pitch, volume, performer arrangements, liked or disliked music, speakers, and headphones.
  • The settings and samples vary: a meal in a cafeteria is not equivalent to a laboratory taste test or judging an image of food. Some samples were small or narrowly defined, including the study of ten adult men.
  • Some outcomes are indirect: the 2024 crossover study involved 50 people viewing lunch images, not eating them. Its positive results for liked music and silence therefore speak to emotion and food appraisal during viewing.

Several available study descriptions are abstracts rather than full methodological reports, so details needed to assess every effect are not established here. The findings do not demonstrate a universal causal effect, a clinical benefit, or a reliable way to change food intake.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can music make food taste sweeter?

One small 1987 study of ten adult men found higher median pleasure ratings for sucrose under loud music than under silence, but preferred sweet-solution concentrations did not change. That does not establish that music makes an ordinary meal taste sweeter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do headphones affect how food tastes compared with speakers?

A 2016 laboratory study included music over speakers and headphones, but its abstract reports no association between the music conditions and amount consumed. It does not establish whether headphones or speakers produce a different flavor or enjoyment experience.

Does eating with conversation make food taste better?

A survey found that more respondents preferred conversation while eating than silence, but preference is not a measurement of taste improvement. The survey’s percentages describe its own respondents rather than all diners.

Can music and food smells work together to improve a meal?

A 2025 carrot study reported modulation of ratings with congruent music or smell, but the combined music-and-smell condition did not show a comparable effect. Its authors called for additional experiments, so it does not support a general recommendation to pair music and aromas.

Is slow music better than fast music at meals?

In the 2022 cafeteria study, slow music prolonged meals compared with fast music, but it did not increase intake. That finding concerns meal duration in one setting, not a universal improvement in taste or appetite.

Should I play loud, low-pitched music for stronger flavor?

A laboratory study found some food-dependent effects from lower pitch and louder sound, with intensity ratings higher when listeners felt more stimulated. The effects were not pronounced, so the study does not justify a loudness or pitch prescription.

Does disliked music make food taste worse?

The 2024 study of 50 participants found that liked music and silence produced more positive emotions and higher ratings for pictured food than disliked music. Because the task used images rather than eating, it does not prove a direct change in taste.

Can music help control how much I eat?

Evidence does not support a reliable appetite effect. Background sound was linked with longer meals in one cafeteria study, while slow music did not increase intake, and a 2016 laboratory study found no association between its music conditions and amount consumed.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose music you like, or choose silence, based on which makes your own meal more pleasant. Studies show context-dependent changes in ratings and meal duration, not a universally superior sound or a dependable way to alter flavor or food intake.
