Games with multiple playable characters do not follow one shared progression rule. An upgrade might belong to one character, an ability set might define who can do what, and a story mission might only appear when a particular protagonist is active. To understand how a game handles its cast, separate four questions: what advances, what makes each character distinct, when you can switch, and whose presence or viewpoint unlocks story content.
Why don’t all games with multiple characters handle progress the same way?
Because “progress” can refer to different things. A character may gain skills or develop a build; a party may change its available actions; and the wider adventure may open new places or story content. Those systems can overlap, but one does not automatically tell you how the others work.

A game might preserve a character’s identity while letting you customize their build, or tie a mission to a specific protagonist even though other characters remain playable. There is no genre-wide rule that says everyone shares experience, that benched characters catch up, or that switching is always available.
A useful way to read any multi-character system is to separate four layers:

- Advancement: Does an upgrade belong to one character, a party, or the broader adventure?
- Ability identity: Are actions fixed to a character, or can a build be changed?
- Switching: Can you change characters at any time, or only at a designated point?
- Story access: Does content depend on a particular character’s presence, playable viewpoint, or active status?
These are comparison questions, not claims that every game uses the same four systems. The examples below show how different answers can produce very different experiences.
What is the difference between character progression and adventure progression?
Character progression changes an individual’s capabilities or build. Adventure progression changes what the player can access in the game world or story. A game can track both at once, so a character’s level or skills should not be confused with the player’s progress through the larger adventure.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER II illustrates the character-focused side: Square Enix describes eight travelers with their own origins, motivations, and skills, and its game and store descriptions discuss developing travelers’ jobs and skills. Each traveler also has Path Actions. In other words, the cast is not simply a set of interchangeable appearances; the characters bring their own identities and abilities to the adventure.
Genshin Impact is a useful caution about the other side of the distinction. Official notices from particular versions have described Adventure Rank requirements alongside character talent materials. Those are separate kinds of progression: an adventure-wide rank can affect access, while talent materials are relevant to character development. The cited notices are historical, version-specific evidence, not a current guide to rank thresholds or the present progression system. Do not rely on an old notice to decide what a current quest requires.
For a player, the practical question is not simply “Am I high enough?” but “What exactly is the game asking me to advance?” If a character’s ability is the issue, look for that character’s development requirements. If a region, quest, or other piece of content is unavailable, check the game’s current requirements for the wider adventure. A character can be developed while an adventure gate remains closed, or the adventure can advance while a particular character still needs an upgrade.
Do not infer a shared leveling rule from the presence of a party screen. The evidence for these examples does not establish that inactive or benched characters automatically gain levels, receive experience, or catch up. That behavior has to be checked in the game’s own rules, current menus, or official guidance.

How can characters feel different if their builds are customizable?
Customization changes how a character is built; it does not necessarily erase what makes that character distinct. A game can let players adjust a character’s class or skills while retaining that person’s story identity, signature actions, or role in the narrative.
In OCTOPATH TRAVELER II, Square Enix describes each traveler as having individual motivations and skills, as well as Path Actions, while also presenting jobs and skills as areas the player can develop. That combination is important: shared systems for development do not mean all travelers have the same actions or personal identity. The game’s store copy sums up its open-ended design with the line, “Every path is yours to take.” That is the publisher’s description, not a promise that every action or story scene is available to every character.
Baldur’s Gate 3 makes the difference between build flexibility and narrative identity explicit. Larian Studios says players can experience the story from an Origin character’s perspective or recruit that character as a companion. Its FAQ also explains that companions can be exchanged at camp and that a class can be respecced without changing the character’s underlying story identity. Larian cautions: “Bear in mind that some characters’ class is closely intertwined with their story, and respeccing them will not change this.”
That separation helps explain why a respec should not be read as a character rewrite. It adjusts the build, but it does not necessarily change the character’s history, relationships, or place in the story. A signature ability or narrative role may remain associated with the character even when the player has choices about their broader setup.
When deciding whether a character is truly interchangeable with another, ask two questions separately: “Can I change this character’s build?” and “Can another character perform the same distinctive actions or occupy the same story role?” A yes to the first does not establish a yes to the second. Conversely, characters with different identities may still share some development options. The game’s description and rules need to be read at the level of each system, rather than reduced to a single label such as “customizable.”
When can you switch between playable characters?
Switching rules are game-specific. Some games provide a defined place to change the party; others make active-character choice part of navigating missions or story content. Do not assume a party-management rule from one title applies to another.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s FAQ says companions can be exchanged at camp. It also says up to three companions can accompany the player. That is a concrete party-management rule for this game: camp is the documented point for changing companions, and the companion count describes how many can accompany the player. It should not be generalized into a rule about switching in every role-playing game.
In Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, Rockstar Games’ May 1, 2024 support update advises players who cannot find another mission to try the game’s three protagonists. Rockstar notes that some Story Mode missions are available only while playing particular characters. Here, switching is not only a convenience; the active protagonist can affect which content appears.
These examples show why “Can I switch?” is not quite specific enough. Ask instead:
- Where does the game permit a party or protagonist change?
- Does switching change only who is active, or also which actions are available?
- Could the next mission require a particular character?
- Does the game signal the requirement, or must you check more than one protagonist?
If you cannot find a switch option, do not assume the feature is missing or that progress is lost. Check the game’s own party-management location or character-selection controls. A designated switching point may be part of the rules. If a mission appears unavailable, the active character could also be relevant, as Rockstar documents for GTA V, though it is only one possible reason and not a diagnosis for every stalled save.
Can a particular character determine which story missions appear?
Yes. A game can gate story content by protagonist, character presence, or viewpoint. Grand Theft Auto V provides a direct example: Rockstar says certain Story Mode missions are available only while playing particular characters, and advises trying its three protagonists when missions do not appear.
This means a blank or quiet mission map does not always mean the story has ended or that a save has lost progress. It may mean the next available activity is tied to a different protagonist. Rockstar’s support article is a troubleshooting instruction, not proof that character selection explains every missing mission; other causes may apply. Treat switching protagonists as a reasonable check, not a guaranteed fix.

Character-dependent storytelling can take other forms. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II presents eight travelers with their own origins and motivations, making the cast’s individual perspectives central to its setup. Baldur’s Gate 3 lets players experience the story from an Origin character’s perspective or recruit that character instead. These are different narrative arrangements: a set of personal journeys is not the same thing as a single protagonist whose mission availability changes with selection, and playing from a character’s perspective is not the same as merely bringing that character along.
When story content seems tied to the cast, distinguish presence from viewpoint. A companion might need to be in the party for a scene, while another game might make a character the player’s active protagonist. A game may also give characters separate motivations without making every personal story available in any order. The available source descriptions do not establish that every individual storyline in these examples can be completed in any sequence, so that should not be assumed.
What do the examples show side by side?
The comparison below focuses on documented design features, not on a universal ranking or a claim that all games in a genre work alike.
| Game | What the official description establishes | What it helps explain |
|---|---|---|
| OCTOPATH TRAVELER II | Square Enix describes eight travelers with individual origins, motivations, and skills; each has Path Actions, and travelers’ jobs and skills can be developed. | A cast can combine distinct character identities and actions with player choices about development. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Larian says players can experience an Origin’s perspective or recruit that character; companions can be exchanged at camp, up to three can accompany the player, and class respecs do not rewrite story identity. | Party management, playable viewpoint, and build customization are separate systems. |
| Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode | Rockstar says some missions are available only while playing particular characters and advises trying the three protagonists when missions do not appear. | The active character can affect mission availability, so a stalled-looking mission list may call for a protagonist check. |
| Genshin Impact | Official notices from specific versions have described Adventure Rank requirements and character talent materials. | Adventure-wide access and individual character development are distinct; old version-specific thresholds should not be treated as current requirements. |
Each row answers a different question. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II helps illustrate distinct travelers and developable jobs and skills. Baldur’s Gate 3 makes the split between companion management, character perspective, and build changes unusually clear. GTA V is the strongest example here for a mission being available only with a particular protagonist active. Genshin Impact shows why the date and version attached to a progression rule matter. None of these examples justifies a claim about how every multi-character game distributes experience, unlocks abilities, or handles story order.
What should you check when progress or a mission seems stuck?
First identify which system may be responsible. This short checklist keeps character growth, party rules, and story gating from getting blurred together.
- Name the missing outcome. Is a character’s skill unavailable, a party option unclear, or a story mission missing? Those are different problems and can have different requirements.
- Identify who or what must advance. Check whether the requirement belongs to an individual character or to the wider adventure. If the game uses both, confirm which one the on-screen requirement refers to.
- Check character-specific options. If a character is central to an action or mission, see whether that character must be selected, developed, or present. Do not assume another character can substitute.
- Find the game’s switching point. Look for its documented party or protagonist-change location. Baldur’s Gate 3’s camp rule is one game’s arrangement, not a universal instruction.
- Try another protagonist if the game supports it. For GTA V Story Mode, Rockstar specifically recommends trying the three protagonists when missions do not appear. If that does not help, investigate other causes rather than treating the character explanation as certain.
- Check that guidance matches your version. Progression notices can be tied to a particular update. The Genshin Impact material here demonstrates the distinction, but does not provide current rank thresholds.
This approach is also useful when deciding whether to invest in a character you rarely use. Before spending resources, check whether the game treats their abilities or story access as distinctive, whether their build can be changed, and whether the game’s rules say inactive characters develop. The examples here do not establish an automatic catch-up system, so it is safer to verify than to rely on a familiar rule from another title.

What is the simplest way to understand a multi-character game?
Start with four questions: Which character receives an upgrade? What actions belong to each character? Where and when can you switch? Is the next story step tied to a particular protagonist or viewpoint? Those answers describe a game’s real structure far better than asking whether progress is simply “shared.”
Across these examples, there is no single formula. A game can offer distinct characters and customizable development, let the player choose between experiencing or recruiting a character, or make mission availability depend on the active protagonist. Keep character development, adventure access, switching, and narrative access separate—and consult current, game-specific rules when a particular upgrade or mission is at issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do benched characters automatically catch up in multi-character games?
There is no cross-game rule. The official information covered here does not establish automatic leveling for inactive characters, so check the particular game’s current party and experience rules before counting on catch-up.
Does respeccing a companion change their personality or story?
Not necessarily. Larian says a Baldur’s Gate 3 class respec does not change a character’s underlying story identity, and cautions that some characters’ classes are closely tied to their stories.
Can you play as a companion instead of recruiting them?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says players can experience the story from an Origin character’s perspective or recruit that character as a companion. Those are different ways to engage with the character, not just two names for changing a party slot.
Why might an old game guide give the wrong progression requirement?
Requirements can be version-specific. Official Genshin Impact notices cited for this topic are historical examples of Adventure Rank and talent-material systems, not verified current thresholds; check current in-game guidance for present requirements.
