The MSI MPG 346CQRF X24 is a compelling buy at its observed U.S. price of $379.99 if you want a 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide with 240Hz gaming, USB-C video and up to 98W charging, KVM, and HDMI 2.1. Its main compromise is equally clear: this is a Rapid VA monitor with entry-level DisplayHDR 400, not an OLED replacement.

That makes it best for PC gamers, laptop users, and mixed gaming-work setups that value connectivity and contrast as much as peak image quality. Buyers seeking premium HDR, guaranteed motion clarity, or professional color performance should look elsewhere.

Design and ergonomics

The 34-inch, 21:9 panel provides a substantially wider desktop and game view than a conventional 16:9 display. Its 1500R curve is designed to keep the edges within a more natural viewing angle, although curved displays are subjective: some users find the shape immersive, while others prefer a flatter screen for office work.

msi MAG 346CQDF E20 34-inch 3440 x 1440 (UWQHD) Gaming Monitor, 200Hz, AMD FreeSync Premium, HDR Ready, HDMI, VGA Port, VESA, Tilt, 0.5ms, Black
  • Easily switch between different resolutions and refresh rates, allowing user to adjust settings based on the game
  • Immerse in a captivating experience with a 1500R curvature rate
  • Deliver ultra-fast response, low latency, and fluid motion clarity for smooth, blur-free gaming with exceptional responsiveness
  • Eliminate screen tearing and choppy frame rates with 0.5ms response time
  • Enhance eye-catching details through adjustments in contrast and shadows

The included stand supports tilt from −5° to 15°, swivel from −30° to 30°, and up to 110mm of height adjustment. The display also supports 100×100mm VESA mounting. Check your desk depth, arm capacity, and clearance behind the monitor before buying; a 34-inch curved screen occupies considerably more space than its diagonal measurement suggests.

MSI lists an approximately 17.4-pound net monitor weight and a stand footprint of roughly 31.8×10.9 inches. A suitable monitor arm should be rated for the display’s weight and ultrawide size, not just for a generic 34-inch panel.

Image quality: strong contrast, realistic expectations

The 3440×1440 resolution is a useful middle ground. It is sharper and wider than standard 2560×1440, but considerably easier to drive than a 4K ultrawide. Text should look reasonably crisp at normal desktop distances, while the extra horizontal space is useful for timelines, spreadsheets, browser windows, and side-by-side applications.

The Rapid VA panel’s primary image-quality advantage is contrast. MSI rates it at 4000:1, and VA technology generally produces deeper-looking blacks than typical IPS panels in dark rooms. That can benefit cinematic games, racing titles, and movies.

VA panels also have trade-offs. Dark transitions can show smearing or trailing, and response behavior may change with the refresh rate and overdrive setting. MSI’s quoted 0.5ms GtG figure is a minimum manufacturer claim, not proof that every pixel transition completes in 0.5ms. No independent measurements in the available evidence establish this model’s average response time, overshoot, input lag, or uniformity.

MSI lists 1.07 billion colors, 8-bit + FRC operation, and coverage figures of 110% sRGB, 85% Adobe RGB, and 85% DCI-P3 using its stated CIE1976 measurements. Those numbers indicate a wide-gamut display, but gamut coverage alone does not establish color accuracy. Treat this as a gaming and general-use monitor rather than a validated color-critical workstation display.

240Hz gaming at 3440×1440

The headline feature is the combination of UWQHD resolution and a 240Hz maximum refresh rate. This can make fast camera movement, aiming, and scrolling feel smoother than 144Hz or 165Hz when the system can actually deliver high frame rates.

The benefit depends heavily on the game:

  • Competitive PC games: 240Hz can be useful when the GPU and game engine sustain high frame rates.
  • Racing and simulation games: the ultrawide field of view may matter more than the jump from 165Hz to 240Hz.
  • Single-player games: 144–180Hz may already be sufficient, making contrast, HDR, and game compatibility more important.
  • Productivity: 240Hz makes cursor and window movement smooth but is not essential for office work.
  • Consoles: current console use is generally limited to supported modes up to 120Hz, not 240Hz.

A monitor accepting 3440×1440 at 240Hz does not mean every game will run at 240 frames per second. Performance depends on the GPU, game engine, visual settings, ray tracing, and upscaling. A high-end PC may reach the target in lighter competitive games, while demanding modern titles may run much lower.

MSI’s manual documents the supported timing modes and DSC use in high-bandwidth configurations. The monitor supports its advertised high-refresh modes through DisplayPort 1.4a, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, but the source device, cable, drivers, and display settings must also support the required mode. Consult the MSI user manual for timing details.

Adaptive-Sync and motion caveats

The adaptive-refresh range is listed as 48–240Hz. Adaptive-Sync can reduce tearing when frame rates fluctuate, but it does not eliminate the underlying limitations of the panel’s response behavior.

Set the overdrive response option at the refresh rate you actually use rather than automatically selecting the most aggressive mode. Excessive overdrive can create bright inverse ghosting, while a conservative mode may leave more trailing. Because independent controlled testing for this exact model is not established here, buyers should test several settings with their own games.

Owner reports found online are mixed, with some users describing good image quality and low ghosting and others reporting visible trailing, HDR dissatisfaction, or high-refresh/DSC instability. These reports are anecdotal and cannot establish a product-wide defect rate. They are best treated as reasons to test the monitor promptly under your return and warranty terms.

HDR: useful support, not premium HDR

The MPG 346CQRF X24 carries VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, and MSI lists 400 cd/m2 peak HDR brightness. That can improve some highlights and scenes compared with an SDR-only display, especially when combined with VA contrast.

However, DisplayHDR 400 is an entry-level HDR tier. It does not imply OLED-like highlights, perfect blacks, or the control provided by per-pixel dimming. HDR results also depend on tone mapping, local-dimming behavior, game mastering, and Windows HDR configuration.

Buy this monitor primarily for its ultrawide format, high refresh rate, contrast, USB-C, and KVM. Do not buy it primarily for premium HDR. An OLED ultrawide such as the LG UltraGear 34GX90SA-W offers a fundamentally different image-quality proposition, but it also brings a different price, curvature, text-rendering behavior, connectivity profile, and burn-in considerations.

USB-C, KVM, PIP, and PBP

Connectivity is where this MSI model becomes more interesting than a basic 240Hz gaming monitor.

USB-C with up to 98W charging

The USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode video and up to 98W of power delivery. That makes it particularly useful for a laptop-based desk: one cable can carry the display signal and charge a compatible laptop.

The 98W figure is a maximum advertised value. Actual charging depends on the laptop’s USB-C power requirements, cable, firmware, power negotiation, and workload. USB-C video and charging also do not automatically make the monitor a full docking station.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monitor has two USB-A 2.0 ports and one USB-B upstream connection. USB 2.0 is suitable for keyboards, mice, and similar peripherals, but it is not appropriate for fast external storage.

KVM

KVM lets one keyboard and mouse control two connected systems, such as a gaming desktop and a work laptop. The exact behavior depends on the selected video input and USB configuration.

In a typical setup, connect the desktop and laptop video sources, connect the relevant USB upstream path, plug the keyboard and mouse into the monitor’s USB-A ports, and select the appropriate KVM source in the monitor controls or supported MSI software. USB-C alone should not be assumed to provide every KVM or docking function.

PIP and PBP

Picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture modes can show two sources simultaneously, such as a laptop beside a gaming PC. These modes are useful for monitoring another system, but they can impose resolution or refresh-rate limitations and reduce the effective workspace of each source.

Ports and console support

The monitor includes two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4a input, USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, a USB-B upstream port, two USB-A 2.0 ports, and a headphone output.

For a gaming PC, use DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1 with an appropriate high-bandwidth cable. For a laptop, USB-C is convenient if the laptop port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and sufficient power delivery. For a console, HDMI 2.1 is the relevant connection. MSI lists support for console VRR, ALLM, HDMI CEC, and up to 120Hz operation in supported PlayStation 5 and Xbox modes.

Console games will not use the full 240Hz capability. The practical target is a compatible 120Hz mode at the console’s supported resolution and signal format.

Recommended setup checklist

  1. Connect the PC through DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1, or connect a compatible laptop through USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode.
  2. Use a suitable high-bandwidth cable and avoid an unverified dock or adapter when troubleshooting high-refresh modes.
  3. Open the operating system’s display settings and explicitly select 3440×1440 at 240Hz.
  4. Enable Adaptive-Sync or VRR in the monitor and graphics-driver settings.
  5. Test overdrive settings at the refresh rate you use most.
  6. Use HDR for HDR games and video, but disable it for ordinary desktop work if the resulting desktop image is unattractive.
  7. Connect the monitor’s USB upstream path when using KVM or its USB ports.
  8. Check MSI’s current Gaming Intelligence software and firmware support before updating; menu labels can change with software and firmware versions.
  9. Test 21:9 support in your most-played games. Older titles may show black bars, stretched menus, unusual cutscenes, or incorrect field-of-view behavior.

If 240Hz is missing

Check the cable, input selection, graphics-driver settings, operating-system refresh-rate setting, and the source device’s output limits. Laptop docks and USB-C ports are common restrictions. If the high-refresh mode remains unstable, test another input and cable, update the graphics driver, and temporarily disable unnecessary signal-processing features to isolate the cause.

If USB devices do not switch

Verify that the keyboard and mouse are connected to the monitor rather than the computer, that the correct USB upstream connection is attached, and that the selected KVM source matches the active video input. USB-C video and charging can work even when the separate USB peripheral path is not configured correctly.

If HDR looks washed out

Confirm that HDR is enabled in the operating system and in the game, then check the game’s brightness and paper-white controls. HDR quality is affected by the game’s own tone mapping and should not be judged from the desktop alone.

Price, warranty, and pixel policy

For the United States, MSI’s official store listed the MPG 346CQRF X24 at $379.99 and in stock on August 16, 2026. Price and availability are volatile, so verify the live listing before purchasing.

The U.S. listing shows a two-year warranty and a pixel policy with specific bright- and dark-dot thresholds. Warranty periods and defect policies can differ by country and retailer. MSI’s U.S. store does not promise a zero-pixel-defect warranty, so inspect the policy applicable to your purchase region before assuming a panel issue qualifies for replacement.

Alternatives

MSI MAG 346CQ

The MSI MAG 346CQ is a lower-tier option in the same broad 34-inch curved UWQHD category, with a 180Hz refresh rate. It is the more sensible route if you do not need 240Hz, USB-C charging, or KVM. The MPG 346CQRF X24 is the better fit for laptop users and buyers specifically seeking its more extensive connectivity.

LG UltraGear 34GX90SA-W

The LG UltraGear 34GX90SA-W is an OLED alternative with a 34-inch ultrawide WQHD panel, 240Hz refresh rate, a 0.03ms manufacturer response-time claim, 800R curvature, G-Sync Compatible support, and webOS features. It is more appropriate for buyers prioritizing OLED blacks and premium gaming image quality, while the MSI is the more practical choice for lower cost, 1500R curvature, VA contrast, and USB-C/KVM flexibility.

Who should buy the MSI MPG 346CQRF X24?

  • Buy it if you want a wide 34-inch gaming display with 240Hz, strong rated VA contrast, USB-C charging, KVM, and HDMI 2.1.
  • Buy it if you switch between a gaming PC and work laptop and want fewer desk cables.
  • Consider it for racing, simulation, FPS, and fast-action games where ultrawide immersion and high refresh both matter.
  • Skip it if OLED-level HDR and perfect blacks are your top priorities.
  • Skip it if you need independently verified color accuracy, uniformity, input lag, or motion performance for professional work.
  • Skip it if your GPU cannot deliver high frame rates at 3440×1440 and you would gain more from a cheaper lower-refresh monitor.
  • Skip it if you need a complete dock with fast USB storage, Ethernet, Thunderbolt, or extensive peripheral connectivity.

Verdict

At the observed U.S. price of $379.99, the MSI MPG 346CQRF X24 stands out for its combination of 34-inch UWQHD resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, USB-C with up to 98W charging, KVM, and HDMI 2.1. That feature mix makes it unusually attractive for mixed gaming and laptop-work setups.

Its limits should shape the purchase decision. DisplayHDR 400 is basic HDR, the 0.5ms figure is a manufacturer minimum rather than an independent performance result, and VA motion behavior can vary with transitions and settings. If you value practical connectivity and high-refresh ultrawide gaming more than OLED-grade HDR or laboratory-verified motion clarity, it is a strong midrange option. If image quality is the priority above all else, an OLED alternative is the better direction.
