You can install Steam games on a different drive without moving the Steam desktop client. In Steam, open Settings > Storage, use the + button to add a library folder on the destination drive, and choose that library for new installs. To free space already used on your first drive, select its library in the same Storage screen, select one or more games, and click Move. Then verify the available capacity in Windows File Explorer.

Adding a library does not relocate games that are already installed. Moving the entire Steam installation is a separate procedure, with broader backup and save-file considerations. Start by moving only the games you need to relocate unless you specifically want to move the client too.

What you need before moving a Steam game

Have a destination drive that appears in Windows and enough free capacity for the game files you intend to move. Check both drives first in File Explorer > This PC; note the free-space figure for the source and destination so you can confirm the result later. Windows Storage settings can also help you review disk usage by drive.

  • Steam must be running on the computer where the games are installed.
  • The destination drive must be visible to Windows and remain connected for the duration of the move.
  • You need a Steam library folder on that drive. A drive letter by itself is not a Steam library.

Steam’s default Windows game location is commonly listed as C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon. That is an example of the default location, not a path every installation uses. Your library may be in another folder or on another drive, so check Storage Manager rather than assuming the default path.

There are two separate space questions to answer before you begin: where future games should go, and which existing installations are using space now. Creating a destination library solves the first question; moving installed games solves the second. If you do not yet have a suitable second drive, first check whether another compatible internal drive is already installed. Buying hardware is not required when an adequate drive is available.

How do I add another Steam library for future installs?

Adding a library gives Steam another destination for games you install from now on. It does not move any title that is already on the original drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Steam desktop client.
  2. Open Steam > Settings.
  3. Select Storage.
  4. At the top of the Storage Manager, select the current drive’s library selector and click the + button.
  5. Choose the destination drive, select or create the folder you want to use as a Steam library, and confirm it.
  6. When you install a game, use the location drop-down in the install dialog and select the new library.

Valve describes this as creating “an alternate location on any drive” that you can choose when installing games in the future (Steam Support’s moving-installation guide). This makes the library available as a location choice; it does not move existing game files or automatically change where every previously installed title lives. If you stop after adding the library, the old game files remain on the first drive and no meaningful space is reclaimed there.

Use Steam’s own install-location choice for Steam games. Windows’ Where new content is saved setting applies to Windows content categories; it is not a substitute for choosing a Steam library in the Steam install dialog. If your goal is just to direct upcoming Steam downloads elsewhere, adding the library and selecting it at install time is the relevant workflow.

How do I move an existing Steam game without reinstalling?

Use Storage Manager’s built-in Move command. It is meant for installations that already occupy a drive and need to be transferred to another Steam library. You do not have to move the Steam desktop client to move selected games.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. In the drive list, select the drive that currently contains the game.
  3. Tick the game or games you want to relocate.
  4. Click Move.
  5. Select the library on the other drive and confirm the operation.
  6. Wait for Steam to report that the move has finished. Do not shut down Windows or disconnect either drive while the transfer is in progress.
  7. Open the game’s Steam page and confirm that the Play button is available. Compare free space on both drives in File Explorer > This PC.

Steam’s Storage screen is also where you can distinguish the source from the destination: the source is the library that currently contains the installation, and the destination is the library you added on the other drive. If you select the wrong source, the game you want may not appear in the list. If you do not see a destination library in the move flow, return to Storage and make sure that library has been added successfully.

The amount recovered is the space occupied by the files Steam moved, not a guaranteed fixed number of gigabytes. Workshop files, shader caches, screenshots, mods, and other data can be stored separately, so the change in Windows may not exactly match the game’s displayed size. Compare the actual free-space figures after Steam completes the operation rather than assuming a particular amount will be cleared.

Keep the old files intact until Steam finishes and the game appears playable from its page. A completed move should be followed by a quick check in Steam and a check of the Windows free-space reading. If the game does not appear to work or the space has not changed as expected, leave any remaining files alone and troubleshoot the library path before deleting folders by hand.

What is the difference between installing a new game and moving an existing one?

The two actions solve different problems: an alternate library controls where future downloads go, while Move relocates files that already consume space.

Action When to use it What changes What does not change
Add a library You want future installations on another drive. Steam gains a selectable destination. Existing games stay on their current drive.
Move a game An installed title is filling the first drive. Steam transfers that installation to another library. The Steam client itself stays where it is.
Move the whole Steam installation You need the client and its libraries relocated as one operation. The client installation and selected data move together. Game saves may still be outside the game folder and require separate checking.

For most people trying to recover room on C:, the middle option is the focused one: add a destination library if necessary, then move the installed games taking space. A new library alone is useful for future installs, but it cannot reduce the space already used by games on the original drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my C: drive still full after I add another library?

Adding a library changes only the list of places Steam can install to. It does not remove an existing installation from C:. Select the C: library in Storage, choose the games taking space, and use Move; then check Windows’ free-space reading. If you only changed the location for future games, current installations will remain where they were.

If C: remains nearly full after moving games, inspect other categories in Settings > System > Storage. Downloads, temporary files, previous Windows installations, applications, and personal media are separate from Steam’s game-library files. Microsoft recommends reviewing the categories and the exact files selected under Cleanup recommendations before deleting anything. Review each selection carefully; cleanup is not the same as moving a Steam installation, and deleting a previous Windows installation should not be treated as reversible.

Windows’ per-drive usage view can help identify whether the remaining pressure is associated with Steam or another category. If Steam’s Move operation completed but the original drive’s available-space number barely changed, do not assume that the move failed or that every related file was transferred. Check which installation was moved, compare the drive readings again, and inspect other storage categories.

Should I move the entire Steam client instead?

Usually not. Moving individual game libraries is the simpler way to reclaim space and does not require relocating Steam itself. A full-client move changes the scope of the operation and adds backup and save-location considerations.

Steam’s separate procedure for moving an installation recommends backing up the steamapps folder first. Follow that procedure only when you deliberately want the Steam program and its installation structure on another location, rather than just moving selected games. A backup drive can be useful preparation for that whole-installation migration or hardware work, but it is not a prerequisite for using Move on an individual game.

Per-game move versus whole-client migration

Choice Scope Backup concern Best use
Move selected games in Storage Only the games you select. Keep important saves backed up according to the game’s own instructions. Free space while leaving Steam installed.
Move the Steam installation The client and its installation data. Back up steamapps and verify save locations before starting. Relocating the broader Steam installation.

These are not interchangeable operations. The game’s Move command changes the location of selected game installations. The separate client move is for a broader relocation and is the one for which Steam specifically recommends backing up steamapps. Do not begin the larger procedure simply because you want to move one or two games off a crowded drive.

Will moving a Steam game delete my saves?

Moving the game files normally does not intentionally erase saves, but you should not assume every save is inside the Steam game directory or synchronized by Steam Cloud. Save locations vary by title; Steam identifies Windows locations such as DocumentsMy Games as one possible location.

  • Check the game’s support page or developer documentation for its save path.
  • If Steam Cloud is enabled, allow synchronization to finish before and after the move, but keep a separate copy of important saves.
  • For a whole-client migration, make the recommended steamapps backup and separately copy save folders identified for the specific game.
  • Do not delete original files or backups until the game launches and your save is visible.

The important distinction is between game installation files and save data. The library move concerns the installation; it is not a guarantee that every title stores progress in that folder. Before a larger Steam relocation, identify where the particular game’s saves live and preserve those files separately as needed. Avoid relying on one universal Windows save path or assuming Steam Cloud covers every game.

Is an internal or external drive better for a Steam library?

An internal drive is the safer default for a library you expect to use regularly. Steam warns that external hard drives can disconnect unexpectedly, which can lead to recognition problems and interruptions; performance can also vary with the enclosure, cable, and connection.

An external drive can still be useful for backups or occasional storage, but treat a live library differently from a backup copy. A live library needs to remain connected when Steam needs it. Steam’s warning is about the risks of unexpected disconnection and possible performance or recognition problems, not a claim that an external drive can never work.

When an additional SSD is necessary

If no suitable internal drive has enough capacity, you may need a compatible internal SSD rather than changing a Windows content-location setting. A PCIe NVMe M.2 drive is a physical component whose connector, length, interface, and supported capacity must match the computer or motherboard. Crucial’s installation guide advises consulting the computer manual before buying or installing an NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (installation guide).

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Check your computer’s specifications before choosing a particular model; this article cannot establish which SSD fits a specific PC. A purchase is optional for the Steam workflow. If a compatible second internal drive already exists, adding its Steam library costs nothing and avoids opening the computer. If you are preparing for hardware work or the separate full-installation move, an external backup drive may be useful, but that is distinct from using an external drive as a permanent live game library.

What if Steam says a moved game is uninstalled?

Steam may fail to recognize a library if its path is no longer registered in the current client or a drive is unavailable. First confirm that the drive appears in Windows and that the existing library folder is still present. Reconnect the drive if needed, then add its existing library path in Storage Manager before downloading anything.

  1. Confirm in File Explorer > This PC that the drive appears and the library folder still exists.
  2. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  3. Use the + control to add the drive and select the existing Steam library folder, rather than creating an unrelated empty folder.
  4. Allow Steam to check the library and see whether the game is recognized.
  5. If the title remains unrecognized, Steam’s support guidance says to reinstall the affected game.

Do not manually delete a folder that Steam still lists as installed. If an existing library path is the problem, removing game files first can leave Steam with even less to recognize. Try restoring the library path first; reinstall only if Steam still cannot identify the game.

What if the destination drive is missing from Steam?

First verify that Windows detects the drive in File Explorer > This PC. If Windows does not show it, the issue is not solved by changing a Steam library setting; address the drive’s availability in Windows first. A destination has to be available to Steam before you can create a library there.

If Windows sees the drive but Steam does not, return to Settings > Storage and use + to add a library on that drive. Select the intended destination folder and confirm it before trying to install or move games. Microsoft’s Where new content is saved setting is for Windows content categories and is not Steam’s library selector.

How can I free space that is not occupied by Steam?

Steam’s Move command affects game-library installations only. For unrelated disk pressure, Windows offers Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations, where you can review temporary files, large or unused files, and other categories before deleting them. Check the selected items and their descriptions before confirming cleanup; do not assume every suggested deletion is appropriate for your files.

Storage Sense is also separate from Steam. Microsoft states that “Storage Sense works on your system drive only,” usually C:. It can automate cleanup on that system drive, but it cannot move a Steam game to another drive and does not replace Storage Manager’s Move command. Use Steam Storage to relocate game installations and Windows cleanup features to review other disk usage.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming + moved your games: it only creates or registers a library destination.
  • Deleting the old folder first: let Steam complete the move and verify the game before removing anything manually.
  • Moving Steam when you only need space: use per-game Move unless the client itself must relocate.
  • Relying on one universal save folder: save locations differ by game and may be outside steamappscommon.
  • Unplugging an external library: unexpected disconnections can make Steam lose access to games or interrupt use.
  • Expecting Windows’ content-location control to choose Steam’s drive: select the Steam library in Steam’s own install dialog.
  • Skipping a capacity check: confirm available space on the destination before moving games.
  • Assuming every file associated with a game moved: related items can be stored separately, so verify actual free space and preserve important data.

How do I confirm the move worked?

After Steam finishes, check three things: the game is playable from its Steam page, the destination library contains the installation, and File Explorer shows more free space on the original drive. If the game appears uninstalled, verify that Steam has the correct existing library path. If the space change is smaller than expected, remember that the Move command transfers the selected game installation, not necessarily every separate file associated with it.

This process lets you reclaim space without reinstalling the Steam client. Keep the client where it is, use a second library for future installs, move existing games through Storage Manager, and reserve a full-client migration for cases where its broader scope is actually needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install a new Steam game on another drive?

In Steam, open Settings > Storage, use + to add a library folder on the other drive, and select that library in the game’s install dialog. Adding the library changes the destination options for new installs; it does not move games already installed.

How do I move Steam games to another drive without reinstalling?

Open Settings > Storage, select the drive that currently holds the game, select the game or games, and click Move. Choose the destination library and wait for Steam to finish. You do not need to relocate the Steam client to move selected games.

Why is my C: drive still full after I added another Steam library?

Adding a library does not move existing installations. Select the C: library in Storage and use Move for the games you want to relocate. If C: remains full afterward, review other disk categories in Windows Storage and check Cleanup recommendations before deleting anything.

What should I do if Steam says a game is uninstalled after a drive move?

Confirm that Windows sees the drive and that the existing library folder is present. In Steam > Settings > Storage, use + to add that existing library path. If Steam still does not recognize the title, Steam’s guidance is to reinstall the affected game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will I lose my saves if I move a Steam game?

Do not assume all saves are in the game folder or covered by Steam Cloud. Save locations vary by game, and DocumentsMy Games is one possible Windows location. Check the specific game’s save location and preserve important saves, especially before a whole-client move.

Should I use an external drive for a Steam library?

An external drive can work, but Steam warns that unexpected disconnections can cause performance or recognition problems. An internal drive is the safer default for a regularly used library; an external drive can be useful for backups.

Do I need to buy an SSD to install Steam games on another drive?

No, not if you already have a suitable second drive with enough space. If you need an internal SSD, check your computer or motherboard manual to confirm compatibility before buying a specific model.

The Bottom Line

To move existing games, add a second library in Steam > Settings > Storage, select the source drive, choose the games, and click Move. Adding a library alone only changes the choices for future installs. Verify the game and free-space figures afterward, and check save locations separately before a whole-client migration.
